Mortal Kombat II is still my favorite MK game to this day.

Came here to say that lol

MKII was indeed the apex predator of old school MK.
For me, there was something lost when they went to MK3
neon_farts@reddit
I will never forget seeing the original at the movie theater. I must have been 10 and I was leaving a movie with my family and I saw Johnny cage rip out Liu Kang’s skull and spinal cord, haha
SteakJones@reddit
Wait what?
jcstrat@reddit
They must mean the original arcade machine at the movie theater
jcstrat@reddit
The combo system. It got too complicated and intentional. It was better when it was juggling.
TheDukeofArgyll@reddit
I remember really liking MK3 on console when I was younger, but I got back to play 2 way more as an adult.
Pisstoffo@reddit
The graphics were such a huge improvement over the original, not to mention the bigger roster and improved character designs. This was peak MK for me as well. MK3 seemed like an MK2 ripoff and I don’t acknowledge MK4 ever happened lol
Cubelock@reddit (OP)
Ultimate MK3 is fun though, especially online. But I agree that it feels... different. MK4 is just funny, especially the cinematics.
Significant_Dog412@reddit
UMK3 was the better game of the classic Mortal Kombats and still holds up on that front. But MK2 was where they perfected the fantastical, otherworldly kung fu movie aesthetic with the characters and presentation.
MK3 felt very "off" at the time with it's sharp turn to a more 90s comic book feel. Boring city backgrounds, lots of colourful spandex for everyone, and lamer fatalities. I did like the cop with the gun, even if no one else did.
The MK9 reboot did a better job of making this all fit together.
MaleficentEvidence19@reddit
I liked Kabal
hobbes_shot_second@reddit
I hate the addition of the Killer instinct combos though.
phazedoubt@reddit
Yeah, but I loved me some Killer Instinct too
hobbes_shot_second@reddit
Killer Instinct was awesome as it's own thing. Sticking combos into MK - and the run button - was blech.
GhulOfKrakow@reddit
The graphics still fascinate me today. They look incredibly realistic, and to me, more realistic than many games today. The same goes for Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game.
DrewDAMNIT@reddit
MK 4 was the shit, n00b. I was there since MK1 as well.
Pisstoffo@reddit
I’ll take digitized warriors all day over those polygon cartoons, b00b.
ass-eatn-szn@reddit
I was hooked / speared (get over here) after seeing these cabinets at the movie theater.
PlagueDrWily@reddit
I was more into the Capcom and SNK fighting games, but MKII was a lot of fun and the SNES version was the first game I preordered; that said, when I played Final Fantasy 3 a couple weeks later, I was bummed I had already spent nearly a year’s worth of birthday/lawnmowing money on MKII.
Umbr9yx3lor1thia@reddit
My muscle memory still does the MK2 character select screen motion when I cant decide what to order at Chipotle. Up up down down left right left right circle triangle or whatever it was. Its a neurological condition at this point. Also the only game where Reptile showing up was more stressful than my actual rent. A floating silhouette in the living forest and suddenly my entire afternoon was a horror movie. Worth it.
likeyournamebutworse@reddit
Thats probably because its the best one.

Aww, I used to play this with my brother

Mortal Kombat II
thunderlips36@reddit
Say ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was probably the best of the bunch as we had the huge roster and combos involved. MK2 was such an improvement from the first though and we put many hours on that and NBA Jam during hangouts back in the day.

I recently watched the 2023 movie reboot … it was bad.
Cubelock@reddit (OP)
Yeah, sadly... But the upcoming MKII movie looks somewhat better.
At least it has Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, which makes it worth the watch imo.
AbbreviationsBorn276@reddit
Oh wow! I did not know of this! Will be looking forward to this.

They are all in on nostalgia:

I have a lot of very fond memories of playing Mortal Kombat III, looking forward to the movie this summer!

I remember writing a letter to one of the video game magazines, asking when it would come out for consoles. That game was almost always packed at the arcade and 10-year-old me didn't stand a chance of getting to play.
Man, just thinking back to the movie theater arcades brings back a lot of memories.

I remember one of the early versions at the arcade you could glitch it out and do a bunch of friendships and babalities after the match

Cubelock@reddit (OP)
That's my preferred fighting game franchise too! MK is mostly nostalgia.
I've mainly played Ken since 1991 (SFII on SNES) in every Street Fighter. Playing him now online too in SF6, which is still a lot of fun and has a very active community.
JWF1@reddit
I remember going to Aladdin’s castle and the first thing I see when I walk in is 30 kids crowded around a giant cabinet. I had no idea the game existed so the jump in graphics blew my mind. I don’t even think I played many games that day. Just watched the big kids play this. It was an incredible day.

Maleena with the portal kick is wall sinker for my only winning video game streak EVER. 🤣
stayingpositive1789@reddit
Movie looks fun!
whoisbill@reddit
100% they have had great games since. The newest was awesome. But MKII just hits the right amount of nostalgia for me. Kitana was my go too.
Babyspiker@reddit
What is this blasphemy using high kick for a jump kick?
Low kick is the superior button.
