I honestly wish manufacturers would stop trying to hide the rear door handles in the C-Pillar.
It was novel the first time when Alfa Romeo did it with the 156, but it's a frankly terrible place to put the handles ergonomically, and nobody is being fooled into thinking it's a three door given the obvious panel gaps/door shut lines.
andrewia@reddit
It's also terrible for kids to reach, and for guests who need an extra second to find the hidden handle. Handles and buttons need to be normal!
Aero06@reddit
Couldn't disagree more. If they're doing away with economy coupes, the least they could do is make the remaining sedans/hatches look a touch sportier. You can really only make out the panel gaps if you're looking for it, at a glance the lack of second handle does make the side profile sleeker. And I think most people who are carrying rear passengers with such frequency that the rear handle ergonomics become a noted annoyance are probably going to jump to a mid-sized vehicle for the extra room anyways.
tiagojpg@reddit
They’re already dying, no need to speed it up by offering more configurations that only a handful of people will buy.
tiagojpg@reddit
I like it my Clio. Made up for not being able to get a 2-door. AND I appreciate it a lot now that we have a baby.
Even_Efficiency98@reddit
The car's designer explained that hidden handles at the back provide more room for rolling down glass and make it simpler. Otherwise, regular handles would push designers towards a two-segment glass, which is more expensive and complex.
Nass44@reddit
Honestly, I don't mind them, especially if this means you don't have to use any gimmicky electric doorhandles instead. It helps a bit with aero, is integrated into to the design of the car and remains a simple mechanism. It's a win all around - looks are still objective of course.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
C’mon, more people can’t have or afford coupe or 3-door hatch in these days, why we can’t just disguise it as our coupe or 3-door hatch ?
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
It never looks right, because a proper coupe/three door would have much longer doors, so you get the weird uncanny valley look because the front door handle is in the wrong place visually.
schultzM@reddit
I like it
Capri280@reddit
I wholeheartedly agree. Of the styling trends currently in vogue, my least favourite design trends are the hidden rear handles and split headlights. Atleast the split headlights serve a practical purpose of lowering the headlight level.
bwoah_gimmethedrink@reddit
Still a boring ass design, meanwhile we have a good looking Renault 5 or even an electric Peugeot 208.
K_R_A_K_E_N_540@reddit
too expensive for what it provides. 25k starting price for the lesser model with 330km range, the top end one is 37k, which is MORE than a Model Y RWD. Dead on arrival if you look at the total price but VW will do insane lease deals like they've been doing with the ID3 in Europe
jaaagman@reddit
I can't wait until they bring out a real ID. Golf, though the ID.3 is pretty close I suppose. This is the sort of EV that we need more of. It would be nice if we could get these EV hatchbacks in North America.
DecisiveVictory@reddit
Disappointing that they made it FWD. Otherwise it looks good.
FourEyesAndThighs@reddit
I hate the trend of replacing metal door handles with cheap plastic flush mounts for rear doors.
Blyatskinator@reddit
Wow I never thought I’d see the day where I really really want a Polo lmao! It looks fantastic actually and I’m kinda glad that VW have already done all their stupid/bad decisions with the ID3 before making the EV Polo.
pursuer_of_simurg@reddit
You woıldn't want a Polo GTI? It is a great hot hatch.
The EV looks promising.
Blyatskinator@reddit
Hmm no it’s a bit too small, already feel that my Mazda is quite cramped (am 195cm tall). Am also assuming that the EV Polo is much more practical/spacious vs the gas one due to EV packaging.
Abba_Fiskbullar@reddit
It has the same interior space as a Golf.
hermitcraftfan135@reddit
Europe gets all the cool little electric nuggets, I still want a new Twingo so bad. Shame there’s 0 market in the U.S. for these!
vw18t@reddit
454 seems a bit low? Especially given the size and power?
53bvo@reddit
It’s pretty high for the battery size 52kWh (usable). My e-208 has a 46.3 kWh battery and gets 362 km of WLTP range (in practice 230-270km)
vw18t@reddit
If I’m upgrading from a petrol powered Polo which I can easily do 600-800+ KM on one tank it just seems a bit disappointing I understand the cost savings but still
JC-Dude@reddit
It's not really cost savings, the battery tech is just not there to allow us to shove an 80-90 kWh pack in a B segment car to get that sort of range. It's kinda funny how people logically think EV city cars are the best fit, while it's the city cars that lose the most with the transition to EV. An ICE city car with a 35-40 liter tank can easily serve as a road trip car for those who only need to road trip like once or twice a year, while a city EV is terrible for that and it pretty much anchored to being a commuter and short distance car.
Even_Efficiency98@reddit
This thing still charges more than 300km real-life range in 23min, that's more then suitable for a road trip. It's okay to stop every 3h, especially on a road trip.
JC-Dude@reddit
No, it charges 300km of WLTP range in 23mins. For real-world range take 50-70% of that.
Tumleren@reddit
It just depends if you think of it in terms of roadtrip range or everyday use. For the latter, city cars are the best case for going EV. I don't think being worse at roadtripping makes them the category that loses the most in the switch
JC-Dude@reddit
With ICE you could comfortably use a city car for everything. Students in Europe drive Clios or Fiestas in college and they don't need anything else. That's not really the case with an EV city car.
53bvo@reddit
Eh it’s not an inconvenience to me. I think I use a fast charger an handful of times a year. So instead having to fuel every 600km I charge it five times a year. As plugging in at home costs barely time.
It’s a big cost saving, a comparable petrol car would cost €12,50/100km, my EV when charged at home costs €3,35/100km.
But even if both fuel and electricity were free I didn’t think I would swap.
Nylereia@reddit
Especially given the price. Not that I like Tesla, but you can get a new Model Y for about 1000 EUR more than the midrange (58kW battery, 454 KM range). Kind of absurd.
Beginning_Cress2646@reddit
Where did you find the price of the 58kW Polo?
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
Germans have the configurator online: https://www.volkswagen.de/de/konfigurator.html/__app/id-polo.app. It's stated as having a 52kWh battery, but perhaps it's a difference between total and usable capacity. The cheapest trim available right now is 33,795 EUR.
Even_Efficiency98@reddit
None ever pay list prices for VWs in Germany. You can already order the ID.3 Neo via retailers for 5k less than its stated price.
Nylereia@reddit
From reviewers in my country with direct information from VW. I also completely misspoke, it's 52kWh. The ID3 has a 58kWh.
Beginning_Cress2646@reddit
Wow, in the UK it seems the 52kWh Polo is only £8,000 less than a base Model 3, just from a quick conversion of the price.
Nylereia@reddit
The 52kWh Polo (Life launch ed.) is 40278 EUR, the base Model Y is 41290 EUR where I live.
The ID.3 Neo with the 58kWh battery is about 44100 EUR.
2023 ID.4 Pro Performance Comfort with a set of winter tyres and about 6-70000 KM is 27500 EUR.
I'm not sure what they are doing in my market, a country away the car is like 10k EUR cheaper.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
This car is mainly designed and sold in Europe, Latin America, and som East Asia world. Consider people there don’t drive that long like most American, that range is fine.
SojusCalling@reddit
Depending on the source the average car commute in the US seems to be somewhere between 12 and 27 miles (one way). Given that a lot of that would probably be spent in traffic, where EVs are very efficient, you'd be absolutely finde with something like the Polo. How often do people really travel more than 200 or 300 miles in one journey?
Blyatskinator@reddit
It’s a small car so.. no? 450 is quite nice imo, other subcompacts don’t get this I believe?
TommyTosser1980@reddit
FWD? Pass.
niftyjack@reddit
FWD lets 2WD EVs do more aggressive regen braking than RWD without upsetting balance, it’s a positive feature
Even_Efficiency98@reddit
Oh sure, because the Polo has famously always been a RWD car /s
TommyTosser1980@reddit
So, does that mean that when a car is made FWD it remains with that traction forever?
Being electric, couldn't they have made it RWD?
Izeinwinter@reddit
Not and have that titanic boot compartment.
TommyTosser1980@reddit
titanic boot on a Polo... Ok.
ArthurFinchleyIII@reddit
Love that they’re rolling out the physical buttons everywhere however I will still refuse to purchase a VW until they make it easier to turn off all of the modern bings and beeps and bongs these cars do.
Idk if I’m just getting old, but the car beeping at me constantly really drives me irrationally mad. My FIL has a BMW, and you just hold one button when you get in and it turns all the shit off. Every company should offer this.
komrobert@reddit
What are you talking about exactly? I have an ID.4 and don’t have any bings whatsoever. Maybe the collision prevention system, but I’ve had that go off like 4 times in the last 8 months.
I turned off the lane departure alert once and it doesn’t come back on every time I drive.
Llew19@reddit
It's a European thing, absolutely enraging and I'm genuinely not looking to buy a car newer than 2022 because of it at the moment.
DatabaseFar2782@reddit
In the EU those have to be turned off every time, along with the speed warnings, if I recall correctly.
ArthurFinchleyIII@reddit
Yep. All cars. Even your new 911 GT3. Madness.
komrobert@reddit
Oh interesting, might be a legal thing. Would be nice to have a single button for it then, though I’d say my experience was pretty seamless once I figured out which menu it’s in.
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
Renaults and Dacias (but I repeat myself) have a single button for all of them, apparently.
ArthurFinchleyIII@reddit
Yeah, my safety or something? Very smart. That’s exactly what I want. One button to turn in into a normal car for me, something that turns off all the bings and bongs, makes it not slam the brakes on if it thinks I’m going to crash. Just makes it a car again, lmao.
MrReadilyUnready@reddit
It's EU law that all those bings and bongs turn back on everytime you then the car off and on again. All manufacturers do it.
ArthurFinchleyIII@reddit
Yes, but some manufacturers make it very easy to turn off. BMW, Renault, to name a few.
Ftpini@reddit
This was the second biggest reason I sold my model 3 performance. Not only would it beep and bong, but it would increase the volume to ensure the beeps and bongs were the loudest sound in the car. 90 decibel nanny beeps is utterly unacceptable. My Mustang GT never makes those sounds at all. It’s so much better to drive.
kinkysnowman@reddit
My ID3 is the most beep and bong less modern car I know, part of why I like it
krooked_skating@reddit
Nowhere but reddit will you see people buying a car based on whether it has physical buttons or not lmao
Calm-Inevitable3341@reddit
Looking at the tech specs and pricing... what am I missing here? This literally reads like a more expensive Renault R5 that's a year late. 1s faster 0-100kmh? Ok, can't say that I care too much about that. Claimed range is pretty much the same too.
Even_Efficiency98@reddit
The R5 is more expensive, has lower range, charges slower, and is completely useless in the second row. It's a great car, don't get me wrong, but also just a different class.
Calm-Inevitable3341@reddit
The R5 is cheaper (about 2k less in my country for comparable levels of tech), has the same range, charges just about the same (100kw vs 105kw? you seriously claiming this is a significant difference?)
Agree on the 2nd row, Polo most likely blows R5 out of the water there. But the R4 probably beats it and matches (or beats) it in price at the same time.
Parcours97@reddit
The R5 is a lot smaller especially the rear seats.
Calm-Inevitable3341@reddit
this is likely true, but I very much doubt that this has more space than the Renault R4. And that thing matches or beats this in pricing as well.
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
Nothing. The currently available trims don't offer anything you can't find in the ID.3 Neo, at an almost identical price point. In half a year or so you will be able to get the cheapest trim with an uselessly small battery (300km WLTP).
Lo2NL@reddit
It looks…. Okay. Just wish EV’s werent so high up on their wheels. At first glance it looks like the previous T-Roc.
Ftpini@reddit
3500lbs and 52kw is interesting. I can only assume it isn’t bound for the US.
one_five_one@reddit
Of course not.
Tddkuipers@reddit
That's not Polo sized, it's almost identical in size to the Golf 6 ffs
Nass44@reddit
Cars have gotten bigger over time, more news at 6. /s
Seriously though, it's not a new thing, the current A3 sedan is the same length as the B6/B7 A4 Sedan from the 2000s. You will see these across manufacturer across basically every decade.
SojusCalling@reddit
Golf 6 was 150mm longer. That's still quite a difference. Meanwhile the new Polo has way more luggage space.
IsometricRain@reddit
> An affordable EV that's not a crossover
> More attractive than its predecessor from all sides (not a given nowadays)
> More ergonomic interior than the Teslas/BMWs/MBs in the class above
> Zero piano black
> Tasteful grill size & bumper openings
> Very good range for this price class
> VW actually listening to feedback after the tacky Golf mk8 interior
I'm impressed
iluvdoingstuff@reddit
Curious how it will compare with the Twingo EV and R5
Nass44@reddit
What I've seen from the videos it easily outclasses the R5 as a "practical car". The rear seats are basically unusuable for and adult because of the lack of space for your feet. Makes it even more baffling, that it's a 5-door.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
To respond R5 isn’t their ID Golf ?
iluvdoingstuff@reddit
This new ID. polo is 4053 mm in length and the R5 is 3922 mm. So not really no.
Actually now I think about it, Renault doesn't really have an Electric Golf competitor.
MrReadilyUnready@reddit
Megane
iluvdoingstuff@reddit
Oh yeah, I forgot the Mégane even existed lol.
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
Nope. Renault 5 is a subcompact, and their closest Golf equivalent is Megane EV, a crossover.
FENICH@reddit
Damn, is VW kinda cooking?
Parcours97@reddit
Finally a small EV with a tow hitch. If this one is available for less than 30k€ the ID Polo will be my next car.
blANK_NX@reddit
Base model 25k
Parcours97@reddit
Yeah but the base model probably won't have a tow hitch. Normally thats a 750-1000€ add on and im not sure if it's available for the base model at all.
vargemp@reddit
Always can install one later.
pc772@reddit
Does this car have rivian tech?
linknewtab@reddit
No.
mehdotdotdotdot@reddit
It looks more like a polo CUV
hbs18@reddit
Unfortunately this will always be a side effect of having the battery in the floor.
Cars like BMWs hide this by painting the side skirts black.
