Jerkrollatex@reddit
It hits different when you have a nonverbal kid.
morrisboris@reddit
I have a nonverbal son and I always thought of this movie too.
notthatryan@reddit
It took me more than 30 years to realize that actor who plays the titular character in this movie also played the boyfriend Bug, in the movie Uncle Buck.
Username524@reddit
Also played in “not quite human.”
djsynrgy@reddit
Alan Thicke and Robin Lively. Yay, '80s!
larryjrich@reddit
I swear that movie was a fever dream. Every person I talked to never heard of it and I can't find it anywhere on dvd or any streaming service. I'm so glad someone else remembers it.
7askingforafriend@reddit
And another John Candy connection is that the lead actress played Cammie in The Great Outdoors
toomanyusesforaname@reddit
Lucy Deakins! I was convinced, as an eight-year-old, that she and I would marry. (Hasn't happened...yet)
CrouchingDomo@reddit
I was gonna marry MacGyver. Not Richard Dean Anderson, mind you; MacGyver the fictional character.
Angelkrista@reddit
What about Sam Beckett?!
CrouchingDomo@reddit
SidFinch99@reddit
I was going to marry Punky Brewster.
Muddy_Wafer@reddit
I was going to marry the Goblin King, so yours sounds way more realistic!
Blackn35s@reddit
Smorsdoeuvres@reddit
I miss John Candy so much.
PunkDoubt@reddit
Woa.
Scrapla1@reddit
Also The Human Torch in the unreleased 1994 The Fantastic Four movie.
cellrdoor2@reddit
And Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) is in the movie too. I didn’t know as a child but as an adult I had an immediate, Noooooo don’t trust her!
Grammarhead-Shark@reddit
10 year old me couldn't comprehend the sweet guy from this movie was the jerk BF in Uncle Buck! Lol
robpoochie@reddit
Check out A Song For Milly Michaelson by Thrice. Great song based on this movie.
GrapevineFiress@reddit
Came here to post this! It's a lovely song I used to listen to on repeat.
sneaky-pizza@reddit
I loved this movie so much I tried to get myself to have a flying dream. Throughout the day, I would just think about flying (like in class, flying up). The theory was that it would become a habit I would try so often, it would happen compulsively in my dream.
Well, it worked! I got one dream where I could fly at will, and was in control. I flew around a bit, then levitated a football to myself and it hit me in the face, and I woke up.
I didn't try anymore after that. Fun while it lasted.
LittleBitOfStarshine@reddit
Because it was terrible

It’s not water, it’s pee
DrMcJedi@reddit
*Piss
jamall1978@reddit
This one of the random movies we had taped from HBO. I can still picture Fred Savage riding his big wheel
pladhoc@reddit
Why would you tape it? It was on HBO 10 times a day for 10 years it feels like.
DrMcJedi@reddit
Free trial weeks! Record all the things until the next one…
redcas@reddit
Not the person you asked, but my mom taped many movies on tv for several years in the early/mid 80s. She ran on "EP" so she could squeeze 3 movies on one cassette.
The Boy Who Could Fly, Apple Dumpling Gang, Brave Little Toaster, Herbie the Love Bug, Pete's Dragon, the OG Freaky Friday and many many more were in our little pirated movie library. Ah memories.
Just_Me_79@reddit
I so loved this movie! I can’t bring myself to watch it as an adult because the simple charm and innocence in it would probably be ruined, and im sure certain aspects have aged like milk in death valley
DandyLionsInSiberia@reddit
Probably one of the earliest mainstream films (beyond Rain Man.. although the target audience for that skewed older) that depicted an autistic character I can remember. .
Did they ever describe Eric's withdrawal and aversion to interacting with strangers + special interest in birds as "autism* though?
The implication seems obvious though in hindsight. Very bitter/ sweet and 1980s though.
GarblingCumfarts@reddit (OP)
"There's something off about that kid" movies were rare but always had an impact. Obviously the main one is The Wizard for people our age. The Mask with Eric Stolz and Cher also comes to mind. Young me thought I was going to watch a M.A.S.K. movie and was super confused.
Shinespark7@reddit
Wasn't there a sub-plot about Fred Savage on his Big-Wheel racing around the block or something? I vaguely remember this movie, but I liked it at the time.
le_gros_serpent@reddit
If I recall correctly, the neighborhood bullies wouldn't let him ride all the way around the block, so he filled his water-gun with piss.
GarblingCumfarts@reddit (OP)
Literally the best part of the movie.
Blackn35s@reddit
Yeah, and remember him burying his GI Joes when they died in his play wars. Then didn’t have to go dig them up out of the mud during a rain storm?
vequinox@reddit
that scene ruined me for years
dbwedgie@reddit
Man, this thread is unlocking some long dormant memories!
Squirrel_Master82@reddit
That's correct. I know because I got my mouth washed out with soap, in front of the whole class, for repeating the "it's not water. It's piss!" line in kindergarten.
roopjm81@reddit
I tried to fill a super soaker with piss after this movie. It took all summer and was so absolutely gross it got burned
bokatan778@reddit
Yes, didn’t he have GI Joe toys that he was burying in the sandbox or something??
BrattyTwilis@reddit
Yeah. He was in the movie
Ok_Breakfast5425@reddit
Only thing I remember about this movie was my sister liked it and the kid that had funerals for his dead gi joe toys.
Worth_Specific3764@reddit
still love this movie
msguider@reddit
Is that Bug Spray?
HangryHangryHedgie@reddit
This was on the same VHS tape as Batteries Not Included in my house. I got the names mixed up for years.
frayhems@reddit
My VHS was a double header with One Crazy Summer.
Mordenstein@reddit
That's a great movie too!
PaleontologistIcy138@reddit
Omg... Forgot all about this movie!!!
iliveonramen@reddit
This was a strange movie. I haven’t seen it in like 30+ years but it was really a weird one.
I think the most memorable things are the little brother setting up plastic army men, and the boy who could fly sitting on his roof pretending to fly.
PastorNTraining@reddit
WITCH!!!!
Listening_Stranger82@reddit
This one had such a good score
zjuka@reddit
When I was little we lived on 8th floor, and sometimes, standing by the window I was wondering if laws of physics really apply to me or maybe, just maybe I was exempt.
Alarmed_Drop7162@reddit
How many kids fell off the roof because of this?
snarkerella@reddit
I loved this movie! Watched it so many times, I have it memorized. Don't forget that Herman Munster (Fred Gwynn) was Eric's uncle and Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) from the 80s best version of Anne of Green Gables was his counselor/teacher. And Natalie from The Facts of Life was their neighbor!
that1tech@reddit
I remember this movie made me sad but for the life of me I have no idea why
jdsmith575@reddit
Does Fred Savage’ character bury his GI Joes and then later scrambles to unbury them in a rain storm? That’s all I remember.
JasonTheMMAGuy@reddit
I somehow missed seeing this as a kid. Is it worth a watch now?
CrouchingDomo@reddit
I would say yes; I haven’t seen it in ages but I remember it being a really sweet movie. It’s just got that feeling of when we were kids, I don’t know how else to explain it.
BoringExperience5345@reddit
That’s a tall house
Kid_Kameleon@reddit
I shit you not I was about to post this on the sub the other day

GenericDave65@reddit
My sister watched this movie on repeat
_buffy_summers@reddit
I don't think I've ever seen this.

Just so happens my guy Minty recently discussed this one.

Nostalgia hit me like a ton of bricks, I need to find one of those again.
blister-in-the-pun@reddit
I revisited this one not long ago, and I loved it. It’s emotional and a great example of a movie being way ahead of its time thematically ❤️
