don't these centers use massive amounts of water as well?
how well is Ut doing with water supply?
Wow_u_sure_r_dumb@reddit
Is the salt lake still drying up?
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
Yes
Wow_u_sure_r_dumb@reddit
Wow this is even more insane in that context. Amazing.
CheerleaderOnDrugs@reddit
Yes. Cyanide cyclone coming in the less than distant future...
onanysunday@reddit
Remember when we were told the grid couldn't handle it if most of us moved to EV's yet it's supposed to handle all of these new AI data centers just fine?
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
SS: This is related to collapse because it will destroy the environment, and the peoples lives due to the cost of running this behemoth. to add this is only one data center there are hundreds in the pipeline. My state will have 30+. This cant be allowed its pure devastation once they are up and running. Say goodbye to being able to afford anything
billcube@reddit
What? This is crazy. Why 30+? Is the demand that high? Is the current capacity not enough? New models are getting more efficient with time and many companies are struggling financially, how to they expect demand that high in the coming years ?
overkill@reddit
In part it is because they are not paying for them, they are creating financial entities to rent them from, meaning they are off balance sheet instruments.
Also, they are using the GOUs themselves as collateral for funding, and they are making some questionable assumptions about longevity.
This bubble will burst.
lufiron@reddit
Its for mass surveillance, they’re not saying this part.
billcube@reddit
The current infrastructure isn't already conducting mass surveillance? Why would you need AI? China's mass surveillance needs a lot of cameras, they might have embedded detection, but not massive datacenters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_surveillance_in_China
thehourglasses@reddit
They want Minority Report levels of surveillance. The problem with current surveillance tech is that it doesn’t by default scan everything you’re doing to determine your threat level, it has to be scrubbed or initiated by a human. It’s the difference between collecting the data and actually reading it.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
You are right, and we are lambs to slaughter
GrandMasterPuba@reddit
There is no end to these means; the means themselves are the end. That is to say, building the data centers is the goal, not running models on them. The entire US economy is propped up by this capital expenditure. Line must go up and everything other industry is decaying or gone, so this is the only avenue left for growth - data centers. AI is just an excuse, the real goal is capex to keep the line moving up. Convince the shareholders we're scaling to infinity so they'll keep throwing money at us.
Without the data centers, the entire economy implodes and we fall into a depression unlike anything you've ever seen before.
InitiatePenguin@reddit
The current capacity is nowhere near enough. Also considering that the adoption rate is still quite low.
They are all in an arms race. They are footing the bill themselves and through venture capital / speculation and an orobouros of funding where the Compute Companies and AI Companies, and (Nvidea/OpenAI & Anthropic/Google & Microsoft) "invest" in each other by offering services and chips.
The money isn't coming from consumers.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
Its insanity, we are just sitting back and letting the bunker bros destroy the only home we will ever have!
Positronic_Matrix@reddit
This project does not make sense.
The largest industrial-scale, single-shaft natural gas turbine generators (heavy-duty gas turbines) currently in operation, such as the GE Vernova 9HA.02 or Siemens Energy SGT5-9000HL, can only produce 0.5 GW. They would need 18 of these gas turbines in a single facility to feed the proposed data center.
To calibrate, the highest concentration of H-Class turbines located at a single project site is 8 units, achieved at one of the three Siemens Energy "Megaprojects" in Egypt. This facility cost $9 billion to build.
Thus, Utah is looking at building $25-35 billion worth of infrastructure to supply energy to this project. Given the project tax revenues, the facility would have to run for 350 years for the state to hit break even. This is not even including the gas pipeline infrastructure that would have to be run across the state.
What am I missing?
Halcyon_156@reddit
The billionaires realized the planet is fucked and are racing to hoover up whatever assets and resources aren't tied down and they wanted Skynet (the AI-powered surveillance state) ready yesterday to control the unwashed masses so when the Resource Wars kick off Peter Thiel and the other goons can sip cognac and nurse cigars while chuckling at live video feed of undesirables being offed by robot dogs.
The only thing is, as a student of history I noticed a common theme, and that is that despite the machinations of the wealthy and powerful greed and conflict are simply not sustainable, and history is rife with examples of powerful individuals and organizations brought down by their own complacency and hubris.
That being said, we live in an episode of Black mirror. The future is now, and it is terrifying.
Frubbs@reddit
Yes, they are. That is why they built bunkers. The faster they clear the pop. the less damage to the environment and the easier it will be for them to reinhabit... evil
4SaganUniverse@reddit
They are taking all of the resources and will sell it to us to make a profit
redditmodsRrussians@reddit
They can approve whatever the fuck they want but without the power generation it’s about as real as a Foxconn factory opening in whatever next sucker state gives them a taxpayer funded advance. We are going to realize that AI data centers are all fucking scams and all the GDP we were sucking each other off on were about as real as Enron’s financial reports.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
No you dont get it, they will get the power generation, and destroy the planet in the process. No one will be able to get power except the power hungry data centers. At the least people will have to pay exorbitant rates and the co2 output will be tremendous. at worst they will collapse the grid!
tennezzee88@reddit
good. collapse the fucking grid lol
lavapig_love@reddit
We say that, but collapse will be less rough and more calm when we just start to build redundancies and backup storage in our electrical grid.
billcube@reddit
Was any AI project blocked by not enough capacity? Every one I see around me starts with high usage (while in discovery mode) but as we formalize the process, the prompts and contexts allow for the use of a much smaller model with a very constrained cost per token.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
I will try to find the chart of the usage and post it. Not all data centers are equal , but it seems they need to go really big to really produce
PhillyLee3434@reddit
This is an amazing yet very sad tracker, thank you for this link and boy I got to get the fuck out of Texas.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
Yes you do the water wars are coming. but I live in missouri and our natural resources like water are being eaten up too.
Sta41BC@reddit
Foxconn(job) Great analogy. Walker really stuck it to the Wisconsinites.
AnOnlineHandle@reddit
Read the article, they're planning to generate all the electricity themselves by burning gas.
Which would be fine if it was solar or wind or tidal or hydro powered etc, but this is a direct contribution to global warming.
Old_Crow_Yukon@reddit
Many of the larger projects generate their own power with gas turbines. There is a hard limit on the number of gas power turbines the world can produce, and there's a backlog reaching well into the 2030s for delivery of those turbines.
Medical-Ice-2330@reddit
Just ask AI how to solve this. Problem solved.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
You want to hear something funny when searching firefox for data centers part of what came up in firefox AI was the environmental impact and how destructive they can be ..lol
JacquesHome@reddit
This will not get built. Anyone can announce a datacenter. I can announce a datacenter. Building one is a whole different issue and many are year behind schedule. There is a 5 year backlog on gas turbines and transformers. By that time, the economics of this thing won't make sense. And Kevin O'Leary will continue being a colostomy bag of a human.
See Exhibit A on why this won't get built: O'Leary Digital is also developing a companion Wonder Valley campus in Alberta, Canada, announced in 2024, which has not yet broken ground.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
Read my latest comment, it will def get built
tnt2020tnt@reddit
When the FFVII eco terrorism going to start on these corps?
Intros9@reddit
Sister Miriam Godwinson should be sounding the call soon...
SigaVa@reddit
It won't, because it won't ever get built, because most data center agreements are scams and this one almost certainly is too.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
I think you are wrong , there is a 10 gw in the future they are planning, and we already have over 1960 data centers, and they are building another over 3k in the US. https://www.aterio.io/insights/us-data-centers/by-state
SigaVa@reddit
Imo you'd benefit from some healthy skepticism.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
Some more info on the project https://www.sltrib.com/news/2026/04/25/hyperscale-data-center-may-be/
matjam@reddit
Gas turbines.
Because that’s what we need. More co2.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
It will pump out ridiculous amounts of greenhouse gas

fuck kevin o’leary

Venus by yesterday

Shes called Venus cause shes hot. And so shall we be.
InitiatePenguin@reddit
Those are homes right across the street?........
rh_3@reddit
Looks like. I am sure they will be fine.
Key_Pace_2496@reddit
Just chalk it up as another reason Kevin O'Leary is a piece of shit.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
Hmm. This is the correct answer! 😄
Key_Pace_2496@reddit
Seriously! This guy is such a tool. Of course he would be building some mega datacenter somewhere that absolutely destroys the planet's resources and climate.
ZenApe@reddit
When I think of all the time and energy I spent carpooling and picking up litter, just so the fuckers can build these monstrosities.....
undeadlamaar@reddit
I guess the only hope now is for all this AI to invent a fusion reactor that works.
Low_Complex_9841@reddit
Jokes aside, at least one interesting workaround for solar power NOT shining 24/7 was invented baaaack in 1968!
From The man himself ("Space Colonization and Energy Supply to the Earth
TESTIMONY OF DR. GERARD K. O'NEILL BEFORE THE SUB-COMMITTEE ON SPACE SCIENCE AND APPLICATIONS OF THE COMMITTEE ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES JULY 23, 1975")
ik I post it everywhere. But this is SO BIG ....completely hidden third way to deal with energy shortages. Yes, costly, but energy for 100-300-1000 *millions* of people will COST anyway. And it was designed to deal with whole SET of problems set forward by "Limits to growth!". yes, people point at capitalistic undertones of such expansion. But as real capitalism showed it has no desire to wait decades, it wants its power NOW, with fast-growing consequences .... So reclaim the idea! At least it will be interesting history lesson to pass down.
ansibleloop@reddit
Even if it did, we couldn't transition to them fast enough to avoid or undo what's coming
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit (OP)
lol yeah and then use fusion on us since we are a threat to the world
Low_Complex_9841@reddit
Ah, someone please go back in time and pay Gordon Moore (Intel dude) big big sum of money to just ...quit it. (I guess in reality Capitalism (tm) will try to find another quick money glitch, but may be it will be harder with all those home users NOT weaponized with excel... )
I guess this "AI" craze is ultimate (so far) case of software bloating faster than hw allow .... I'm not even sure if there will be anything left to use when all this smoke and glitz finally winded away ... Is it really push for technology in some misguided hope it will deliver, or just something "simple" to keep money circulating, going around?
uninhabited@reddit
Kevin Fucking O'Leary ... So he's in the the grift as well huh. Makes sense. Let's hope this collapses and takes down the idiotic clown with it
IncompetentJedi@reddit
It’s like we’re actively using the Matrix as an instruction manual…
Batbuckleyourpants@reddit
It generates twice the amount of power the state uses? So it doesn't affect the citizens .That sounds good. What is the problem?
slayingadah@reddit
I honestly never thought much about AI being a huge part of collapse, because I was thinking about the plot lines starring intelligent takeovers by the machines, and I knew other factors would get us first.
Now I see that AI will absolutely hasten collapse solely by the data centers robbing us of our remaining water because, of course, we live in the dumbest, meanest, most short sighted timeline. All so a few can line their pockets.
Sorry_End3401@reddit
It’s a tax haven land and water rights grab in the name of “progress”.
BEERsandBURGERs@reddit
So, there is also an ubundant water supply in the state of Utah that can be used for data centres, besides energy? Or is farming for food out of fashion in Utah?

Its pure madness! what are we doing, omg Utah you want to destroy the ecosystem? I guess the tourist revenue from the national parks cant compete with the tech bros billions fml!
