Advice on building for 4k vs 1440p

I have no experience in this space but have tried to do my homework. I have an LG 65inch C5 (4k) and want a dedicated PC for it, serving the role of a steam machine.
My Q is, should I go for high end, like a Razen 7 9800X3D and RX 7900 XTX (roughly 2,500 usd) to aim for 4k and better future proof the PC.
Or, aim for 1440p 120Hz with a Razen 5 9600X and 9070 XT. (Roughly 1700 Usd)
I'm leaning towards 1440p. I'm not a competitive gamer, and not especially chasing the latest game/graphics. 4k would he nice but I suspect 1440p will more than wow me. Correct me if I'm wrong about that. Plus, the more I read, the more it seems like overpaying now to future-proof isn't a good investment. Better to save that money and upgrade many years later. Please help me to feel confident pulling the trigger without regrets. Many thanks

If you are going to play at 4K I would say RTX 5080 (I have the MSI Gaming Trio) if you are playing at 1440p 5070 or 5070ti will suffice. Nevertheless you have options, if you don’t care about DLSS then you could also go for a 9070xt however you will lose driver support faster with a AMD card vs a Nvidia card.

my suggestion: 7800xt or 9800xt with rx 9070 or rtx 5070, and use upscaling for 4K

I play at 1440p on a LG 55inch OLED and it’s absolutely fine especially if you’re going to be sat 3ft+ away from the screen as you won’t notice any issues. 1440p on a 4k monitor is more problematic when you’re up close!

Even 4090 struggles to achieve stable 60 fps in 4k (with upscaling or not) in certain modern titles, but mostly manageable. Also, path tracing seems to be becoming more widely used and popular. Overall, 4k still stays a premium gaming feature, so you're either all in or not at all. For competence gaming 4k is not really recommended, it's more for immersive gaming and you already have the 65" display. I would go 4k (because, well, I already did), and 1440p would look visibly blurry on your large 4k screen.

Go with the second rig. It does well at 4k too in my experience.

I have the 9600x and a 9070xt and 1440p is great with it and you will save a bit money. I play 1440p on my 77” LG G series and it looks great.

Will you be playing 1440p on a 4k monitor?
