A warehouse/Business for hoarders called “Waste Not Want Not” where you can “keep” off site all the trash that’s usually hoarded

I realized that I like to keep the ziplock-like bags from Amazon deliveries. (not the delivery envelope, but the ziplock clear bags that they keep merchandise like clothes or cloths.)
Anyway, it would be cool if I could drop all my ziplock bags off to a warehouse where I could come back and pick something up. like a junkyard for little things.
i realized that feeling like these useful but also useless things could find a home makes me really happy, and helps me with the idea of getting rid of things that I feel could be useful.
If there were a business to help hoarders by giving them a place white they could store things like styrofoam cups. with the promise they can go back anytime.
The business doesn’t have to keep anything long term.

You’ve just given me a great idea to setup a storefront promoting exactly what you’re proposing, but I actually just throw everything away because hoarders will never actually ever use the stuff they’re saving.
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
Yes! It could be a wink-wink, nudge nudge, word of mouth “this is where things other people want to throw away go to be used how it’s always meant to”, then it just gets thrown away too.
If I had unlimited resources, I would turn it into a free thrift store “Buy Nothing” group for legitimate stuff. (People get rid of furniture, supplies, etc all the time.) But 90% of it would be tossed maybe more.

I fear you just invented a garbage dump.

It is, BUT where we delude ourselves in “I can get this later.”
MyKidsArentOnReddit@reddit
That's called self storage
MANvINFO@reddit
no NO bc everything will go on shelves and be id tagged and digitally indexed
slouch@reddit
If you can convince them your bags are art supplies, this is Creative Reuse in Pittsburgh https://pccr.org/
IllustriousBarrel@reddit
Like the item bank in RuneScape
TateXD@reddit
I actually had to start cleaning mine out a little recently lmao
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
EXACTLY!
crazycatlady331@reddit
I have a small storefront on Mercari. Pretty much everything is shipped in reused materials.
If my buyers don't like my items shipped in a Prime bubble mailer (I turn inside out to erase the branding), they can pay me more.
similarbutopposite@reddit
It’s called the city/county dump.
Timmah_Timmah@reddit
You are not allowed to scavenge at the dump.
similarbutopposite@reddit
Huh, good point. I forgot the dump I used to scavenge as a kid was actually a private dump that one of my family members owned.
Okay, maybe OP makes a good point. Seems like a lot of liability today, with all the sharps and biohazards people would likely “store” there.
Timmah_Timmah@reddit
Wasn't that great fun as a kid! Finding free stuff you didn't even know you needed.
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
One aspect of my idea could just be a dump with a sign that says “Definitely not the dump.”
Nature_Is_Lit_Yo@reddit
i don’t hate it, but we also don’t have to put the responsibility of all that trash on the individuals. Maybe it’s a return hub for the trash that companies dump on us on the first place. Let’s say there’s one pick up per week or per month, amazon sends a return truck to take back all the plastic film and process it either in a specialized recycling facility or send back further up the chain to the original suppliers to deal with, and in the meantime, if you need a garment baggie you can pick it up from the warehouse anytime (maybe there is always a minimum stock of like 10 bags)
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
i do like this!
amazonchic2@reddit
I feel like thrift stores do this but with the condition that you have to buy back things when you want to remove something.
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
Lol, yes. Now, this is closer to a Buy Nothing, where you give things you can’t quite give to thrift stores. But yes, essentially, yes.
sername_is-taken@reddit
This is basically all the worst parts of a thrift store, garbage dump, storage units, and a giant junk drawer all in one.
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
I won’t disagree with that. Lolol
TinyMagicExperiment@reddit
A spot in my city lets people drop off whatever they want and then it’s put onto bunch of tables for other people to take. It’s all free and it’s such a relief to the community. It’s a non profit and they do food drives and stuff there too. It really helped me out as an impoverished kid! Maybe something like that is a good pivot on the original idea?
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
I do love this, like Buy Nothing, but where people could just drop off. The other aspect to my idea is having a place where we could dispose of hoarded trash too.
Gaxxz@reddit
There are self storage places everywhere.
OkDrag3967@reddit
Genuine question, but how’s this any different from a rental storage unit? Does this business help dispose of things after a certain time period?
Pale_Row1166@reddit
For an extra fee, your loved ones can pay to have the unit torched in a controlled burn.
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
That’s really the goal. The goal is delusional “we’re just keeping this safe for future use”, but the your family can come and burn it when you’re not looking.
Pale_Row1166@reddit
This is the only way I see this business having legs. You have a container show up at the hoarders house, all their nasty shit goes in, and the container takes the stuff away to live at a farm where it will have lots more space to run and it will befriends with baby cows!
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
Exactly.
xrelaht@reddit
I think the idea is you can go get stuff other than what you dropped off.
SamAreAye@reddit
Literally nobody read the post. Lol
gridsandorchids@reddit
Yeah its called a storage unit bro.
Rayesafan@reddit (OP)
Community storage Unit where is can double as a Buy Nothing?
rrapartments@reddit
The problem is that hoarders keep things, the business would run out of stock, because the hoarders would take it all home.
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit
like a self-storage warehouse?
They already have plenty of those
Public Storage, Extra Space Storage, Red Cube, etc.
Neat_Shallot_606@reddit
Yes I love it.
DeathOrCurePlease@reddit
Warehouse is high overhead for trash.... how about a 10 acre feild. Just a empty feild where you can free dump anything. Collect* anything.
