James May notices something about the VW Golf GTI! đ

James May recently drove an older version of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and noticed an interesting detail inside the car worth documenting on Twitter/X. Buttons for the win!
mwoody450@reddit
And âchild protective servicesâ and âdo not resuscitateâ buttons, too. So convenient.

I'm more concerned about the Toronto knob, as someone who lives in Toronto. I'm not sure if you want that maxed out.
KamakaziDemiGod@reddit
That's the model of radio (Blapunkt Toronto SQR46), the knob is actually for how depressing you want the music to sound as denoted by the ): next to it
I'm confused by the knob next to it though, as its symbol appears to be a small rubber duck riding a unicycle
coffeebribesaccepted@reddit
It's a bass and treble clef used in music notation, kind of funny to use them for the equalizer knobs
KamakaziDemiGod@reddit
^(psst, I know, it was an attempt to be humourous!)
Kichigai@reddit
Makes sense when you consider it's being sold in a market that speaks like 20 different languages.
gefahr@reddit
You never go full Toronto.
kanumark@reddit
Only if the clock reads 4:16âŚ
ba-dum tish! đ
steve0suprem0@reddit
I'm gonna need this one broken down for me, please.
kanumark@reddit
The area code that traditionally represents Toronto is (416) - if you have a 416 area code in your phone number⌠youâre an OG Toronto.
steve0suprem0@reddit
Gotcha, thanks. Sorta like 705 and 775 in northern Nevada I guess.
kanumark@reddit
Bingo!

Gran Toronto

Not sure what CPS stands for here but DNR stands for Dynamic Noise Reduction.
Darthblaker7474@reddit
This being a UK spec car (probably) thatâs actually for the Crown Prosecution Service.

Hovers finger over the CPS button menacingly
StagePuzzleheaded635@reddit
I was about to correct you on the Do Not Resuscitate, as itâs now Do Not Attempt Cardio Vascular Resuscitation, but I guess it would have been DNR at the time.
kh250b1@reddit
Thats for metal tape type, not music genre (for the millennials)
crc2993@reddit
Donât accidentally hit one of the buttons next to it though. Youâll either have people take your kids away or they wonât resuscitate you if you get in a crash
WonderfulCost864@reddit
That was a great brand for car stereos. I would expect no less from them. I owned metal tapes. Excellent sound quality back then
therockster26@reddit
Have I made this up / misremembered but if you taped over something on a metal tape you could still faintly hear the original recording if there were any gaps on the second recording?
hughk@reddit
If you had a recorder that could handle metal tapes, it was fine. You would get much cleaner higher frequencies.
Essentially it meant dualing up the erase and recording field strengths to 11 and using a special tone equalisation filter for both record and playback. The metal button would do this.
Ryanliverpool96@reddit
Why would it make any difference the tape was magnetic tape, either the charge was positive 1 or negative 0?
Lord_Waldemar@reddit
You're thinking digital, this was analogue, so infinite values between 1 and 0. And the tape chemistry had an influence on how the tape stored the data, iirc metal tapes had higher dynamic range because they could be magnetised harder or something.Â
Top-Car-808@reddit
I dimly remember being 'magnetised harder' back in the 90s.
It was in the middle of the night, in a field in Hamshire.
Moist_Barracuda_2014@reddit
Did you get the tickets from some fucked up bloke in Camden Town?
Top-Car-808@reddit
I think I left an important part of my brain in that field.
Ryanliverpool96@reddit
Oh wow, we had analogue music players in cars? I canât even imagine that!

Jesus, I feel old...
roguespectre67@reddit
I have students right now that were not alive when we first heard of that strange new illness that seemed to be coming from Wuhan.
gefahr@reddit
I think/hope they're trolling. If not someone show him an 8 track.
Ryanliverpool96@reddit
I'm not, growing up our family cars always had screens, the first car I remember us having was my dad's BMW 5 series and every car ever since has had screens.
I did Google "8 track" images and it basically looks like a giant USB stick that stuck in the dash.
Substantial__Unit@reddit
Wtf wait til you hear about radio
aggressiveclassic90@reddit
Growing up?
Surely you're still in the middle of that?
musical-miller@reddit
Jesus way to make me feel old, and Iâm only 32.
I donât think we had a car with a CD player until I was 11 or 12
Quaiche@reddit
Well, yesâŚ.
Your hurting a lot of generations with your remark, haha.
Lord_Waldemar@reddit
Analogue was the only way to listen to music for a long time. The best thing is you could/can get adaptors for car cassette players that connect to phones via 3.5mm or bluetooth so you can play music from your phone without permanent modification to the car.Â
tiorzol@reddit
Man the sound quality on those 3.5 to tape extensions was so bad but it really felt like the future to me back then
Educational-Score-17@reddit
Having a mk2 gti 8v this is pretty cool tbh
Educational-Score-17@reddit
Added it as my pfp if anyone cared
Fantastic-Option-260@reddit
âCode protectedâ reminds me of the insanity of that period when you were supposed to take the front of your radio off and put it in your pocket everytime you left your car to stop it being stolen!
Content-Yogurt-4859@reddit
Pockets as an anti-theft device? Someone should tell all them people walking around central London, lost in the screens of a ÂŁ1000 pocket computer.
Fantastic-Option-260@reddit
It was more that the front end small bit would be seperate from the main bit of the stereo left in the car. Each was worthless on its own as they were coded to work together.
But youâre right, a significant risk was someone would steal, then throw away, the removable bit (and youâd be left with a useless stereo)⌠or more likely you lose it!
Content-Yogurt-4859@reddit
I took a swing at a joke and missed, that's on me.
I just wanted to point out that keeping something in your pocket is safer than leaving it on display, something people getting their phones snatched out of their hands should bare in mind and make a point about how the it's basic the same crime finding a new venue, instead of smashing windows to steal and sell valuable electronics they just grab the valuable electronics out your hand.
Constantly focusing on the symptom means we haven't tackled what are probably the exact same drivers of this low level crime, we just get our knickers in a twist over phone crime. Next time I'll say nothing đŽâđ¨
Fantastic-Option-260@reddit
Ha! No problem I do that all the time đ
Amayukki@reddit
A bangin' stereo for me tunes.
ConsistencyWelder@reddit
So cool that they had a button to push just for one music genre.

Porsche owners will always let you know
Pepsimax88@reddit
That's just not true. I have a Porsche and never told anyone.
WangMauler69@reddit
You just did
Drumchapel@reddit
Yes for metak/chrome coated tapes for better fidelity. Surprised James wouldn't know that. Some home high-end cassette players had them too.
UsidoreTheLightBlue@reddit
He seems to know but had forgotten about it prior to seeing it again.
kyjoely@reddit
I had completely forgotten about it until I saw this post as well, it's hardly critical knowledge in this day and age.
devilspawn@reddit
I will have you know there are dozens of cassette users left on this planet.
Substantial__Unit@reddit
James has to know about the metal based tapes right? Seems he's the type that would know about it.
Silent-Tea4500@reddit
Yeah he just said he forgot about it, not that he doesn't know what it is
oatseyhall@reddit
So which ones are the weapons?
JebediahKermannn@reddit
"Manual, automatic, semi-automatic... Oh, those are the weapons!"
happymisery@reddit
I had one in my MK2 GTI. All it seemed to do was increase the treble LOL

That setting of equalizer was super popular among Blaupunkt players, even in CD era đ
