Back to quicksand…

We all spent hours of our childhood discussing and debating the best way to survive a quicksand debacle. I teach 5th grade. I asked two of my classes if this was ever a concern of theirs, shockingly, it’s not even on their radar. They looked at me like I was the crazy one! I said, “Jokes on y’all! I have a plan!” Then they reminded me I’m supposed to be the adult that keeps them safe. I swear, Gen Alpha. 🤦🏻♀️

I was quite nervous about the Bermuda Triangle.

In Search Of with Leonard Nimoy.
Spontaneous Combustion
Ginger630@reddit
Omg yesssss! I thought that was something common.
ExtraAd7611@reddit
Right? It was a major concern in California.

We grew up in a time when they needed a TV filler episode, quicksand was a standard. Also brakes stop working, or dangling off a cliff. But thats why we care about quicksand so much, it was on TV more.
Sithstress_@reddit
Also pretty big scenes in both The Neverending Story AND The Princess Bride.
Kooky-Ad1551@reddit
Oh yeah, completely forgot!! Quicksand was so common everywhere a constant threat. I've never encountered it, not once in my life.

Killer bees
chasingjulian@reddit
Some killer bee movie I watched as a kid had the bees attacking a school bus and all the kids were stuffing clothing into all the holes the bees could fly through. Terrifying.
MrMilesRides@reddit
Saw that one! Was there opening scene the VW Bug literally covered with bees, getting the police escort telling everyone to be extremely quiet?
crafty_n_sassy@reddit
I experienced quicksand about a month ago! Was hiking along a canyon creek in the desert and stopped to have a snack. After a few minutes I noticed that my right foot had sunk almost to the top of my hiking boot. It tool some maneuvering to pull it out and by the time I was done, my left foot had started to sink! I was of course enthralled and couldn’t believe my luck 🤣, had to show my friends and everything!

Luckily there was a vine within reach, right??

Quicksand. Killer bees. Acid rain and fucking Skeestaks. I hated those slow moving guys. They freaked me out.
RetroBerner@reddit
These kids are cooked if they ever have to survive any sort of emergency situation. Quicksand? Hell, I don't think my kid could climb a tree if his life depended on it.
RascalOScrimp@reddit
Yeah! What happened to the quicksand we were promised in our youth? Don’t struggle! Stay still! Deadman’s float. Arms wide! So many options to not die. But still. I always wanted to know what was at the bottom of the sand. How come no one ever snorkeled down below. And no apparently we’ll never know..
ZebraBorgata@reddit
How about getting attacked by piranhas?
RitualHalatiik@reddit
I actually stepped in quicksand once as a kid!
I mean it was a display of quicksand set up at a museum with a barrier around it. I was escorted out and banned. Worth it, though!

I thought I had things well in hand when I figured out how to get out of quicksand, but then they threw spontaneous combustion at us I and I realized there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about that! I tried to keep a glass of water nearby, but never truly felt safe again.
Cross_22@reddit
Would drowning in quicksand help extinguish the flames from spontaneous combustion or is that more of an internal process?
OldManThumbs@reddit
Stop, drop and roll ain't helping this time Timmy!

I first learned about SHC when one of my teachers read some stories about it to my class. Instantly terrified! 😳

One of my friends said something about “didn’t come up in my life as often as I thought it would“ as an odd tangent in my latest Game Day . I interjected “Quicksand?”, and the whole group had a laugh.
“ I thought quicksand was gonna be such a problem!!”, said the one lady present.

We all did. We were prepared. I’m almost disappointed at the lack of Lightning Sand and ROUSes in my life.
ZebraBorgata@reddit
Rodents of unusual size? I don’t think they exist
Chad_Hooper@reddit
I was more prepared for Gilligan’s Island-style quicksand, with the handy jungle vines to pull someone out. And big, googly-eyed spiders.
KindaKrayz222@reddit
But what about the floor becoming lava?!
Jeebusmanwhore@reddit
But did you try to make quicksand? I did when I was about 9. Really, I made mud. And boy, was I in trouble for my attempt at SCIENCE!
newhappyrainbow@reddit
I used to have a sandbox that was extremely deep (it was on top of a well). I’d use the garden hose to sink myself in it up to my waist and then try to get out.
BizzyQueenBee@reddit
We were highly skilled children, trained tokeep an eye out for quicksand, and taught how to put ourselves out when we are on fire with the stop, drop and roll! Also, if there is a tornado, just go to the hallway and put a book on your head.

There was this one movie with a horse that engrained quicksand in my brain forever!

As special effects became better, the quicksand peril was no longer used in movies and cartoons like it was in the 60s through the early 80s. Special effects allowed for more realistic challenges.

Didn’t someone get stuck in quicksand recently?
procrasstinating@reddit
There was a rescue in Arches National Park this fall for someone who got stuck in quicksand.
Cool-Coffee-8949@reddit
Somewhere, probably.

The loss of playing outside at the parks. No park playing no quicksand or sharks to deal with😆.
