Wouldn’t step foot on one of these things after the Ft Hunter Liggett incident.
KrispySal@reddit
What incident was that?
ltrumpbour@reddit
The poster above is way overstating what occurred. The NTSB investigated.
This was testing over four years ago (2022) of their second generation, pre-production prototype running at speeds outside the aircraft's tolerances.
from the NTSB Aviation Investigation Final Report:
So not this aircraft, flying a stress test. There have been since lots of flying hours. New aircraft have been developed from the lessons learned.

Yea that's what I thought. Thank you for that correction.

Joby Aviation is.. a very funny name in Scotland.
randmcnally12@reddit
I bought shares just on the name... my childishness might just pay off.. 🏴💩
Doogers7@reddit
I remember a comedy bit from the great Billy Connelly about a joby (jobbie) in a cup 💩
Keezees@reddit
In capitalist New York, Joby wheechs you!
JMulroy03@reddit
Wait until you’ve seen my new startup: Boabee Aviation
merckx3697@reddit
I would definitely take one of these if the price point is reasonable.
SeaMareOcean@reddit
It used to be surprisingly reasonable to helicopter to JFK from Manhattan, like \~$150. I’ve done it before in a pinch and it’s awesome. I think last I looked it was closer to $500 which is not something I’m inclined to support.
Turbofan55@reddit
I took one a few months ago and it was about $200.
SeaMareOcean@reddit
Oh not bad. I wonder why I remember it being so high? Do they do surge pricing or something? I remember Uber being involved at some point. Idk though it’s been years since I lived there.
Turbofan55@reddit
I’ve only seen it high when you’re booking an unscheduled charter. I think it was pretty high during the US Open too, but I’m not too sure.
achoppp@reddit
A blade flight is 195
GMTMaster_II@reddit
Joby now owns Blade
achoppp@reddit
I'm aware
Comfortable-Yak-2555@reddit
Blade is owned by Joby
achoppp@reddit
That's the word on the street
mduell@reddit
I’m the sky too.
euanmorse@reddit
‘Joby’ 😂
If you’re Scottish this will raise a smile.
jakeotheshadows@reddit
These are probably less safe than a helicopter, which are about as safe as a motorcycle. No thanks
br0wntree@reddit
What makes you think they are less safe?
jakeotheshadows@reddit
Any fundamentally new design certified for human flight is gonna be less safe than something certified for over 50 years.
HulkScreamAIDS@reddit
If they've solved the thermal runaway containment required for cert I'd be shocked.
br0wntree@reddit
Was this a problem for them? I thought that we had already figured out how to manage it in general. There are also already other electric aircraft in production.
mduell@reddit
What electric aircraft is in production?
br0wntree@reddit
The pipistrel velis electro.
Beautiful_Jaguar_413@reddit
I wonder the same.
But eventually, solid state batteries should reduce the risk of battery fired by at least a factor of 10, yes?
sofixa11@reddit
If they have the energy density per weight and volume for aviation, yes.
smsmkiwi@reddit
Just what's needed in the northeast air traffic corridors. More fucking things flying around. ATC can barely keep up now and there have been two major collisions in as many years. Ridiculous.
UberKaltPizza@reddit
It works on Coruscant. Why not here?
rustyshackleford677@reddit
This service has existed for decades, hell I think it’s even shown in GTA IV at one point.
ThatOnePilotDude@reddit
Nah just route them 100’ below the packed VFR skyway which is right under the busiest airspace in the US. Thats never gone wrong before right?
W2ttsy@reddit
Surely it would be more appropriate to create a dedicated flight path for select routes and then route other traffic around it.
Outside of emergency scenarios, I’d imagine it would reduce the need for additional traffic control?
Funny_Woodpecker7696@reddit
“😂” - 🏴
Middle-Nerve1732@reddit
Any way to find out when they’re flying? I’d like to go down and see it take off and land
LegDayDE@reddit
And btw these disturb literally tens of thousands of people when they fly low over residential areas just so the 0.1% don't have to take the subway or a car 🙄
rustyshackleford677@reddit
The .1% won’t be flying out of JFK
SK737@reddit
These are very quiet. I’ve heard them flying out west and it is much quieter than a helicopter.
LegDayDE@reddit
Might actually be an improvement over the existing helicopters... But I also assume it's still going to be a significant disturbance for many people.
BelethorsGeneralShit@reddit
Blade (which Joby owns) already operates dozens of helicopter flights every day between JFK and Manhattan. It's $195. Not couch change, but you also don't have to be anywhere near the top 0.1%.
ekkidee@reddit
IIRC PanAm used to do this.
Raid-Z3r0@reddit
They used chinooks to do it. Untill one crashed ontop of the building, now you can't have a helipad in Manhattan

yawara25@reddit
Those flights are why helicopters aren't allowed to land on rooftops anymore in NYC.
Scriefers@reddit
Well it was just that one flight really.

Always gotta be someone that ruins it for the whole class.
Commotion@reddit
I think you're thinking of New York Airways, which had an accident on the helipad on the roof of the Pan Am building (currently MetLife Building).
There are other companies that fly helicopters today, but none of them are electric.
ekkidee@reddit
NYAir, correct.

I've complied a ton of info on Joby. Check out this post if you want to learn more.

AlexisFR@reddit
Anything but buses and trains, huh?
cat_prophecy@reddit
Are you insinuating that New York City has no busses and trains?
yawara25@reddit
There are buses and trains between JFK and Manhattan.
MacDoesReddit@reddit
Blade’s been doing that with helicopters for years, but if Joby can pull it off with electric craft, that’ll be amazing.
yawara25@reddit
Blade is owned by Joby now, too.
Wojtas_@reddit
I would've expected the opposite if anything. Interesting case!
MacDoesReddit@reddit
Oh, are they? Even better, that means they could potentially switch over to all-electric.
tamboril@reddit
Yeah yeah yeah. This means nothing anymore.
Mderose@reddit
I think both Joby and Archer will suceed with each company's goals.
