4/50 ok folks, the unrelenting positivity event is moving along. Now it is time for Maine.

Our newest unrelenting positivity post is now up. The state in question is the great state of Maine. To all our foreign friends give a shout.
Ask all your questions about Maine or give any response you'd like so long as its positive. Be funny or joking but don't be a jerk. If you are then its a comment removal and a one day ban. I haven't had to ban more than a couple people and its only a 24 hours ban if you catch a stray.
Stay tuned for 5/50 and 6/50 tomorrow I hope.
The states are in random order based on my whim at the moment.

There's just something magical about walking through a deep pine forest.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Depending on lighting and weather conditions… also incredibly unsettling
scixlovesu@reddit
Yeah, but I love that part too!
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Same here. But seriously it took me a couple years to feel comfortable backpacking and hiking in Maine and NH. I’m from the open flatlands and did a lot of backpacking out west where more often than not you can see to the ridges in all directions.
When you are standing on a steep slope and can’t take a step without being in arms length of a tree is really really strange.
I spent some time out in Iowa a couple years ago and I had forgotten how wild it is to see horizon to horizon.
scixlovesu@reddit
Yeah -- for me, the wide-open spaces are uncomfortable!
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I’ve learned to love both and fuck me if Iowa thunderstorms aren’t some of the coolest things I have ever seen. You can’t just watch them roll in for miles. Then all of a sudden they are on top of you. I don’t think I have ever seen as much lighting as I did in those clouds.
But I frequently go on walks near me in an area that has really odd weather because of a big cold water bay and the interaction between offshore weather and inland weather coming down from the mountains.
Occasionally I’ll be in the woods, dense woods, on fairly flat terrain criss crossed by rocky streams. Places I know very well. But there will be this dense cold fog amidst the dense trees and undergrowth with huge towering white pines overhead.
It’s incredibly disorienting even if you know the trails and they are well marked. You really start to understand stories about “the deep dark forest.”
Around me it’s not too scary because there are boundary features everywhere. Road to the north, road to the east, river to the south, tall ridge to the west. That kind of thing.
In northern Maine in the back country it is a whole different thing. Just semi wetlands in dense forest and rolling rocky hills for miles and miles in any direction and maybe a few barely used logging roads as any kind of boundary feature. That is where you start thinking wendigos are real.
scixlovesu@reddit
And hidebehinds and woofaboomuses and all sorts of lumberjack lore, too!
And some of the noises you hear in the deep woods! I had never heard a partridge taking off before, sounded just like the growl of an enormous monster!
Not too surprising I grew up in the woods loving spooky books and movies.

“Bert and I come down to the dock about six o’clock in the early morning. Bert went into the boathouse to fetch the pots and the slickers and I went out to the dock to start up the Bluebird.”
scixlovesu@reddit
"Bert and I"? How old are you lol?
chitexan22@reddit
I stayed in such a cozy inn on one of those bays in Maine. I’ll always appreciate the peacefulness I felt.
Effective_Display940@reddit
I remember visiting friends in Maine as a kid. Highlights included blueberry picking and wading in a creak. The nature there is just gorgeous.
eugenesnewdream@reddit
The only place we've ever traveled to that my sullen too-cool teenager actively requests to return to is Maine. We went on a family trip a couple of summers ago and loved it. I agree with the teen, we should go back and check out more of it.
Wild_Ticket1413@reddit
Acadia National Park is one of my favorite spots in the entire country. Great hikes, beautiful scenery, pretty shorelines...
Take the tour to Baker Island and the ferry to the Cranberries. And don't forget to get lobster.
Lantern_516@reddit
Maine is gorgeous. Visit Bar Harbor. Stay in Acadia. Stop by Kennebunkport. There's a cool antique store in Trenton. Drink in the independent spirit of our most northeastern state. The food is amazing. The people are exceptional & have a great rugged, strong, and kind vibe.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I prefer staying a bit out of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport in tourist season but yeah it’s gorgeous.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
Whitewater rafting in Maine will always be a core memory
Squidgie1@reddit
I visited Portland a few years ago and was ready to move there.
Help1Ted@reddit
Everyone always chats up the lobster, but the blueberries are second to none.
superkt3@reddit
Fresh bake pd wild blueberry pie with a big scoop of brighams vanilla bean ice cream. The season is ALMOST here 🤤
Help1Ted@reddit
I don’t really even like pies that much, but I had probably 3 blueberry pies while I was there.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I'm disagreeing with Brighams but that is for my own personal reasons.
Spirited-Way2406@reddit
Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk!
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I do this every time I pick blueberries and I'm not even a true mainer.
amazingtaters@reddit
Moxie is the official soft drink of Maine, and I'll be damned if you Maineiacs aren't spot on with that stuff. It's delightfully medicinal!
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I keep trying it like a couple times a year. It’s still never for me.
DachshundNursery@reddit
I've been binge watching Maine Cabin Masters lately and those dudes seem so freakin' nice.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I have never seen it but I suspect people here would be a bit put out by their overt friendliness.
SuperPomegranate7933@reddit
We lived in South Portland for like a year when I was a kid & I've always wanted to go back. It really is home.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
My good buddy from South Portland many years ago told me they called the police there the SoPoPoPo. I laugh any time I see one of there cruisers.

You may enjoy this: My friends who grew up in Port Huron, Michigan call their local police the PoHoPopPo.

My Appalachian mom loved lobster AND always wanted to see whales. Whale watching trips in the past had failed her. We planned a vacation to Maine and took her. In the midst of a glorious week of all the lobster she could eat, we also had an amazing whale watching tour during which a baby whale played along the side of the tour boat while mama whale kept close watch. My mom was thrilled and I was thrilled for her. Years later, I am so happy she had this experience and I always think fondly of Maine, remembering our time there and Mom's joy!

People_Do_This@reddit
Awww... thanks!
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I went as a young kid to MA, not ME with my fam. We went out on a whale watch. I was so excited.
However because Im a young boy I was enjoying the majesty of those creatures but one released a huge poo and our whale watch guide said something like "oh the whale has just soiled the ocean."
I laughed super hard.
relikter@reddit
2 / 50 was Michigan
3 / 50 was Alabama
4 / 50 is Maine
Where is 1 / 50? WHERE IS IT!? Is this some sort of billy goats bluff?
GOTaSMALL1@reddit
I just want to crack the order they’re being picked. :)
relikter@reddit
OP says he's picking them on a whim.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
It’s here. I hijacked another question to kick this off. https://reddit.com/r/AskAnAmerican/comments/1sw4wta/why_do_american_movies_and_shows_make_so_much_fun/
relikter@reddit
Ah, thank you!
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
No need to thank me. We will get to the glorious state of VA. I promise I will not post this https://youtu.be/l-GrF87b82Q
relikter@reddit
But you could post the Arlington rap.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Casual Boston disses? Pride for Arlington? Cheeky local references I don’t understand?
One thousand fuck words, yes. One, thousand, fuck words, yes.
That fits the unrelenting positivity. My man has motion.
relikter@reddit
What's interesting is your video about Annandale isn't at all how I think about it. In my mind, Annandale is just great Korean food. The annual Annandale food festival is amazing (but you will have to run across 4 lanes of traffic to attend it).
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I’ve never been I don’t think but a buddy in the area sent me that years ago when his company was maybe going to move there.
latelyimawake@reddit
Ayuh.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Ayuh indeed.

Fun Facts about Maine...
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Uhhh I’m questioning 2. We forced a few more to be us states… again. Thanks Josh Chamberlain.
RsonW@reddit
Only monosyllabic State name, which is neat.
Stephen King is from Maine, so that's cool.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
One state border too.
Anyway come visit Derry they keep it off the map for all the unresolved murders but it is real it right outside Kenduskeag on the river.
Spirited-Way2406@reddit
In Maine, they know how to dress for rainy gales, a life hack most non-Alaskans never figure out.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Yes it involves a hoodie and flannel shirt.
Spirited-Way2406@reddit
Water-resistant coat with a deep hood, Velcro or drawstring sleeves, and plackets on both the inside and the outside of the zipper. The bottom hem should come down past your butt.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I’m just joking a bit. I have spent a lot of time hiking in the rain.
My favorite setup is decent hiking boots, Outdoor Research crocodile gaiters, long waterproof pants, a solid wind/rain proof jacket, and a thin poncho that goes over the backpack and any hat that keeps the rain off my glasses.
But the Mainer answer is “why you doing all that?”
“You know you get wet walking in the rain right?”
[puts on a hoodie and flannel in the rain and just deals with the consequences]
Spirited-Way2406@reddit
I guess the guy I went to school with was a oddball. He had a full set of Helly Hansens, bright yellow, with a sweater and jeans underneath.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
That also sounds like a slight different version of Mainer.
SoutheastBeerTravels@reddit
Maine is the whitest state by population percentage
WhichSpirit@reddit
Some of the best horror comes from Maine. Thank you for terrifying the rest of the planet!
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Can’t take credit but Saint Stephen King is our most unhinged.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
The back handed compliment is that the best part of Maine is the ferry to Nova Scotia.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Ok Strang, what the heck. I said funny and unrelenting positivity right?
Did you also do this because you know I desperately want to take that ferry for no other reason that the ocean is cool? I feel like this is a personal attack.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Well. Duh.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Thanks bud. I’m already apparently a “fascist mod that is peak Reddit.”
Feisty_Water_3164@reddit
A. I love this idea 2. I’ve never been to Maine, but it calls to me.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
A. Thanks. 2. The children yearn for the pines.

Portland Head Light is one of my favorite places in the world.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
Have you been to any of the other lights? I haven't been to one I didn't like.
DadPuncher69@reddit
Maine is by far one of the most beautiful states in the country.
queenjazzyjazz@reddit
My sister speaks very highly of the lobster at Bar Harbor. I've never been to Maine, but Portland seems cool. Also, I remember Fred Durst loving Lewiston.
TheDude-Esquire@reddit
I went to a lobster pound outside of bar harbor when I was camping at Acadia. But camp food I ever had.
ATLien_3000@reddit
Maine is awesome.
Well worth a visit.
