How could the ATF improve its reputation?

HybridP365@reddit
Focusing on gun runners, gang members, and other actual criminals instead of nailing Joe Shmo to the wall for a deactivated RPG tube or a 3D printed lower.
Repealing all BS "rulings" that change or alter the exact letter of the written law, such as brace or FRT rulings.
Willful non-compliance of bullshit NFA laws. Who the fuck cares if I take my legally registered SBR to another state?
You know, preventing crime instead of making new things crimes.
ShireHorseRider@reddit
Why not take it a step further & remove SBR & SBS and suppressors from the roster. After that we can discuss opening the books to allow modern FA weapons to be registered instead of the closed book we are currently dealing with.
HybridP365@reddit
That would be ideal, but that's not something the ATF has a say in. That's up to Congress, and not the subject of the post.
VladStark@reddit
Yes, this would at least make them somewhat legitimate rather than lazy bastards who only want to go after easy targets.
There are PLENTY of dumbass trouble maker inner city gang members "flexing" their Glock full auto switches on social media, and they need to be going after these fuckers 100% of the time over bubba who bought an "oil filter" he might convert into something else on his acreage where he ain't even causing any problems.

How about not changing its mind every 2 months about the legality of something
irattlecannedmycan@reddit
The chevron difference is gone
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Chevron Deference being gone does not mean the ATF can't change their mind every 2 months. It means courts are no longer obliged to defer to agency interpretation.
It means it's easier to challenge executive agency interpretations because they no longer get deferential treatment by the court.
WastingTime1111@reddit
Have you ever had to court over anything? IT TAKES YEARS TO DO ANYTHING. ANYTHING! They will drag you out into court and bleed you dry until you are broke and give up.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
I'm well aware. But I've seen people believe Chevron Deference being overturned means things actually changed. The court explicitly ruled that no prior decisions were vacated, it just means the ATF has a harder time defending things, not that anything went away or was stopped
1Crusty_Old_Man@reddit

Assuming self-implosion of the agency isn’t an option:
Consistent enforcement of policies by IOIs. At present, every FFL is governed by different rules set by their agent regardless of what the actual laws state.
Reevaluating definitions of the National Firearms Act, as of right now the NFA breaks several existing rulings as to what can and cannot be regulated per the Constitution & SCOTUS rulings.
Not being such self-righteous pricks.
SpottyWeevil00@reddit
Just repeal the NFA and be done with it. It shouldn’t exist to begin with.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Aside from the obvious shitposting, a real answer:
Stop trying to entrap people with "solvent traps" and "Night use Muzzle brakes" and fake glock switches on tiktok marketplace. Stop trying to trick FFLs into screwing up with sting operations.
Start going after REAL criminals. Like people trying to buy guns illegally.
The NICS Background Check System has Issued 5.1 Million Denials Since 1998, Only 0.1% were Referred for Prosecution and the Conviction Rate is Less than 0.01%
Now sure, some percentage of denials were likely innocuous:
You don't always know if there's a warrant out for you. I know a buddy who didn't realize he had a warrant out. He plead guilty to a traffic ticket by mail, but the court either never got it, or lost it, and so he never showed up to court.
But I doubt that makes up 99.9% of denials. The ATF should at lease be doing a cursory follow up on any denial to see if it's a mistake, or someone trying to intentionally illegally purchase a gun. Start putting agents on those cases and stop trying to entrap people.
AngriestManinWestTX@reddit
A real answer that isn't fuck off or get disbanded:
Actually going after large criminals and gun trafficking organizations in a meaningful way instead of just fucking over otherwise law-abiding people for small and unintentional violations of firearm laws would go a long way together with arriving at a consistent interpretation of existing laws that errs on the side of permissibility rather restricting to the greatest extent possible.
Jjmills101@reddit
Hit the nail on the head. It’s less what their stated mission is and more that it seems to be done in totally bad faith
paleface_gringo_2@reddit
Yup. There are teenagers posting videos of themselves weilding glocks with switches in the areas with the most violent crimes in the country but for some reason they'd prefer to spend their resources ruining the life of some redneck that cuts a shotgun barrel too short. Also not killing women, children and dogs would probably be a great PR move too.
AngriestManinWestTX@reddit
This one pisses me off the most. I’ve seen too many body cams or ring cams of dipshits who are caught with illegal machine pistols (some after robberies or even drive-bys and murders) who skate on the NFA charges.
Whereas if I got caught with an AR-15 that isn’t P/W, I’m probably getting a steep fine at best and going to prison at worst. And they’re such easy cases, I would think. You’d think federal prosecutors would be wetting themselves to drop the hammer on some caught carrying a super deadly machine pistol. They look great trotting those out for their press conferences. But they don’t.
Noneed4cavalry@reddit
You mean if you get caught with a 14.5" AR that was pin and welded until they threw it in a vice and used a 3ft breaker bar to remove the muzzle device, and even though they warped and ruined the barrel in the process they still managed to get the muzzle device off so "screw you buddy, you're going to jail."
AngriestManinWestTX@reddit
It was intended to be hyperbole, but honestly, given some of the shit that the ATF has gotten up to in years past, I wouldn’t discount it entirely.
SirEDCaLot@reddit
When you inform Bubba that he violated some rule and is under arrest, he won't shoot the officer(s) with his SBS. The teenager with a switched Glock probably will (as will his friends, who also have switched Glocks).
zombie_girraffe@reddit
"Do your God damn job and pursue violent criminals instead of spending all day trying to pad your stats by harassing people about victimless crimes" is advice that every law enforcement agency in the country needs to hear about twenty times a day until they finally start to understand.
squats_and_sugars@reddit
Adding on, the ATF NCETR is what I think the ATF should be. They work on explosives testing, research and disposal for both public and private entities. They aren't out kicking in doors because you had too much black powder, but if you find UXO on your property, you can get in contact for safe disposal. On the F in ATF, there is plenty of firearms research and training to be done, instead they focus on enforcement against the easiest targets, which yields a shit reputation.
SovereignDevelopment@reddit
This. If they would just nut up and stack up on actual criminals, people would respect them more. Instead, we all cheer when an ATF agent gets tased for harassing someone.
number__ten@reddit
I am in complete agreement. However, that would require work and risk instead of just cosplaying seal team six against normal Americans.
AngriestManinWestTX@reddit
Yup. It’s sad to see.
And there’s lots of criminals out there who are blatantly violating the law and flaunting their lawlessness on the internet who are never investigated or federally prosecuted for NFA violations if/when they’re arrested.
CleveEastWriters@reddit
IT CAN"T. I know regular real cops who think more of fat mall security wannabe's than they do the GAYTF and that's their words not mine. This includes hospital officers, street cops, officers in colleges, park rangers. No body likes the ATF and they have earned all the hate they get.

There's a store in Ft. Lauderdale that sells all this. Coffee too. I stopped by while I was going to the airport. It is called The Smoking Gun.
A_Queer_Owl@reddit
ehh, the regulation part is good because there are absolutely corporate ghouls who would sell booze and tobacco full of poison and guns that explode just to make a quick buck and the little guys like us need a big stick to give em proper whack if they do and something to prevent that in the first place.
it would absolutely suck if you or your family member died because Richy McLiquorface decided it's ok to kill people with tainted booze if it means he'll make more money. regulatory agencies didn't just pop up out of nowhere, they exist because companies did exactly what I'm talking about and consumers weren't able to fight back against corporate power. thousands if not millions of people died from unregulated industries selling literal poison to maximize profits.
SageViper_45@reddit
I’m all for holding companies to a higher standard of manufacturing and service but that’s not an excuse to jam up law abiding citizens under the guise of “public safety” when we already have laws and regulations that make criminal acts illegal. I’m all for lowering the crime rate but it shouldn’t mean giving up my rights. If the government wants to actually protect the people then they would improve the quality of life. The fact that the government can but refuses to do so should tell you a lot about the people in charge.

There is literally nothing the federal government could do that would ever get me to trust the ATF. They could come into my super restrictive state and somehow abolish all gun control laws on record and I still would not look at them in a good light. They could start targeting other LE organizations by arresting officers who misuse their firearms and my opinion of them still wouldn't change. The only actual thing the ATF could do to lose my ire would be to disband and put every single employee's name on a government employment black list.

C-R_Collector@reddit
Ssssshhhhh. That makes sense. You’re taking about the United States government. They’re not allowed to make sense; this is in article one of the constitution somewhere in the fine print.
Lampwick@reddit
They've already dumped the useful part of the alcohol and tobacco job to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Wake-n-jake@reddit
It'd be great if an entire government entity could figure out the simple sentence "shall not be infringed" and what that means.
BlueOrb07@reddit
Not enforcing rules that infringe on the constitution, not shooting dogs, not entrapping a law abiding citizen and causing a shootout in the hills that kills nearly their whole family, not causing a shootout that burns down a whole compound with women and children inside while only going after one guy, not changing their mind every 2 seconds on how to do something causing everyone to now know how to approach something, and more.

Even if someone wants to make an agency that tries to regulate guns or whatnot, I'd still want the ATF disbanded. It's a matter of what it represents- sidestepping the constitution to get what you want. Be direct and legitimate with that shit and I'll at least respect your effort.
Low-Landscape-4609@reddit
Not to mention, anytime they actually do pass anything, they just want you to pay more money for it. They never really keep you from owning it.

Here's the reality, people that have ffls have to bend over for the ATF all the time. They can say what they want but they still have to bend over for them.
I'm retired police officer and in reality, the ATF really doesn't do that much. They honestly don't. I know we hear new stories about them but they're just not that proactive and the grand scheme of things.
Example, you wouldn't believe how many times we tried to call them to work a case and they wouldn't mess with it. They just didn't care.
Here's a good example. There is no law in my state for a felon that is working in a gun store. However, we had a guy at a pawn shop that was actually processing Firearms paperwork and we got rumors that he was actually showing guns to people. We called the ATF to see if they wanted the case because we didn't have a local charge and they didn't want to bother with it.
ScarredCock@reddit
Personally, if they would process NFA submissions faster and with less scrutiny to details that absolutely do not matter.
Why do I need to post screenshots of a filament roll from Amazon and explain I'm gonna 3D print a suppressor? I'm submitting to the stupid game, just give me my approval and fuck off.
