The opti idle will automatically turn the truck off after 5 to 15 minutes if it's between 32° f and and 75° f (or 0C and 23C) outside.
There is a separate heater, called the bunk heater, which, in my experience, tends to be unreliable.
There is no separate air conditioning unit, just the main truck air conditioning. Very jealous that such a thing exists! When it's about 70° out and the Sun is hitting your truck, it can get quite warm inside and the the opti idle won't let you run the damg air conditioning. I don't want to leave my windows open to let the flies in!
There is a feature called Smart idle which is built by some kind of sadistic monster. It will turn the truck on and off perhaps every 20 minutes, which of course wakes you up every time it does it.
No, I was referring to the AC. I'm still a relatively new driver, and every truck that I've been in was equipped with an APU, but I've never seen the APU run air conditioning when the truck was off. Is that a thing?
Yeah we're about two or three decades behind you guys in the way that the government regulates the way that workers are treated. People here are oddly reluctant to stand up for themselves, under certain circumstances, like demanding things from their employers.
They can remove that as well in the computer. My last 2023 peterbilt i could do any of the tricks to keep idling unless the outside temps were 95 or lower than 35 I had an apu
There’s a guy on here that had a device that would push the auto-off override button every 30 secs or so. I’m sure you can find something like that off Amazon.
Lol when I worked for Felon Express I had my truck iding for a week straight because it was during the San Diego summer and I had the ac on full blast.
Duuude I have one too and I used it back when I was at Werner, but now that I'm at Western express, it has no use because for whatever reason (guessing the general nature of this shithole), the override engine shutdown button doesn't even work.
Because I am a new driver. I applied to 20 companies before I got on with this one 6 months ago. All the same story. Either I dont have enough experience, insurance costs too much, or they just flat out quit responding / reject me with no explanation.
I hear ya completely, did it for 11 years, work for a family owned company now. Dock bumps, ejacks and liftgates is as hard as it gets now lol. I heard the union pays really well on the railroad, it’s impossible to get into up my way, where are you located? I’m in CT.
I'm in Connecticut as well. Middlebury actually. I hired on with Metro North as a locomotive engineer so it's like Disneyland everyday compared to trucking. It pays well but the structure is weird. You bid a job schedule twice a year and make whatever the schedule pays regularly plus claims you put in that fall outside the regularly defined job description.
DPF failure. Pull over immediately. Derating to 50mph.
Call dispatch. They connect me to the shop that tells me to unplug something and drive 3 more hours to get back to the terminal, on a 70mph toll road.
Gotta love those shitty 1st year job companies. I got a week of vacation after my 1 year and scheduled it the first day after my 1 year, gave them my 2 week notice the Friday before vacation and escaped that shithole.
Next few years had me moving up and now im at a union gig where ill be making great money once I get some seniority.
Put it in those miles and time, a year at least, then leave their cheap asses ASAP. That's what I did with the first company I worked for. Though, they did have excellent trainers and taught me well for a newbie
I can confirm, most of the middle normal human companies can't afford new drivers, insurance won't allow. If you have experience for more than 1 year, 80% of the companies will accept you
Are you willing to accept the wages offered? It’s not the drivers, whom are horribly exploited by shitshow companies, that dangle the prospect of being unceremoniously sent home as an incentive. I’m not saying that there isn’t a problem, I’m saying that taking it out on someone based solely on their skin tone is a shitty way of going about it.
Observing reality is not racism. In the age of infinite information in your pocket at all times, ignorance just for the sake of not hurting someone's feelings is a remarkable choice.
Were they older trucks? This wouldn't work on any of the trucks I've ever been in that shut down. I've tried just holding my foot on the accelerator and still get the shutting down in 3 minutes message.
It all depends on what the fleet manager has programmed in. There are 1 million different settings and features they can adjust and toggle on and off that can affect iron limits, as well as all of the tactics many use to get around them
If you are still driving the same trucks, next time try the combination of setting the trailer brakes but leaving the tractor brakes released and then using the stick on the accelerator trick. Usually the two together will work
I haul heavy equipment and I've found that the Tractor Supply "mountain" brand lasts me a couple of months. Multiple loads a day, 5 days a week. The went through a bunch before I found these. I'm not 100% sure on the name, but I think it's mountain something. Full leather.

It could be worse. I have an apu and engine shutdown override. The thing is when you override engine shutdown nothing but the coldest AC comes out. doesn’t matter if you turn the heat all the way up on the dash or in the bunk. Does not act like a thermostat like the owner said, I even had the windows down in single digit temps to see if it would kick the heat on to warm up. My only solution is to put air on one above the lowest so it doesn’t automatically turn the engine on and off every 5 minutes, put the air through the defrost, close both window and bunk curtains, hang a king size blanket on the bunk curtain as well and run a 750/1500w space heater on low. It kept the inside at 65ish when it was single digits outside. apu broke and had to spend a couple weeks out before O got routed back to the terminal.
Most frustrating thing about the auto shut off, is if I'm sitting at a dead stop in traffic, or at a train while in drive, the damn thing will try to turn off!
Had this happen to me in a traffic jam north of Jacksonville on 95 north. Traffic being routed to the far left lane, 3 into one, stop n go. Cut off on me and i crunk it back up. But it wouldn't go into any gear, drive or reverse. Stuck in the left lane, accident cleared up, waiting on a tow truck with the hero road ranger guy flashing behind me. They was tearing me up on the cb, nb and sb.
This may not be completely possible depending on the truck but try pulling the fuse for the auto shut off feature. Also some trucks have it so you can turn it off in the settings
Yeah, switch bot is much easier but the override switch actually has to be enabled. Freightliner is shit. Opti idle has to be malicious design. Kw at least can be tricked with coffee or only using the trailer brakes.
Thats odd. My company has every possible override on the cascadias and volvos. But the internationals have the parking brake / cruise trick and the T680 / pete all have the engine throttle set still active. I dunno why.
Can't edit post, but I told the company to take this truck and shove it somewhere else, im staying in my KW until they get the emissions problem resolved. If I took that cascadia, that would be truck number 8 in 6 months. I had a Cascadia, a T680, 3 internationals, and my current T680. ALL of them have given me emissions related issues, the cascadia and 2 of the internationals also gave me cruise control faults that caused the truck to govern itself out to 55. I have gotten so good at swapping trucks I can have a months supply of food, clothes, medicine, and equipment as well as other misc personal belongings swapped over in 30 minutes. Im tired of swapping trucks every time something breaks. I told them I want this truck, I am keeping it. No sense in swapping trucks every 2 to 4 weeks. Its actual bullshit.
They have mine set to start a shut off timer as long as my rpms stay consistent. No matter how high if they don't change after like 15 seconds it starts to countdown.
My truck would shut off even with the throttle depressed if the brakes were set you couldn't do anything to idle it was the worst thing about my favorite company thankfully my last company had APUs
It completely depends on how the company has it set up. At Walmart this works and you can also high idle. At Prime if you release the tractor brakes it would stay running, but only for 30 minutes.
Yep. Anyone saying that they can have any old person with a laptop and the right adapter and software change whatever settings they want have clearly never had to deal with password protection issues. The bigger the fleet the absolutely higher the chance of the fleet manager locking everything down behind very tightly controlled passwords that are often specific to each individual tractor.
I use this on my truck when my APU is acting up. Here's the website for and everything program it to your phone you can set it to run indefinitely or have it time out after a certain number of pushes lifesaver.

Love that. But you do know that you can go to diesel doctor in Effingham, IL and they will change anything for you in the computer. They don't care who owns the truck

Question for my american truckers out there.
Do your trucks not have a seperate AC and heater to cool down or heat up the cabin when the truck is turned off.
Over here in most of europe having a heater is mandatory and as far as i remember as of last year so is a AC unit for when the truck is turned of.
endangeredphysics@reddit

Opti-idle will kick the truck on to recharge the batteries when an accessory load is being used, such as the bunk AC.
Comfort mode can be set to run between certain conditions just like idling can.
If your opti-idle isn't kicking on to charge the batteries, you should get that checked. Some truck makers like international have issues with this
nickn1738@reddit
I personally think its pretty weird that you guys just dont have these options.
Im just a daydriver so i get to go home every day and i still get the heater and AC for when im being unloaded.
Meanwhile you guys drive across the entirety of america sleeping in your trucks with no AC or heater when the engine us stopped.
