Have you ever been Whammy Burger'd?

I assume most of us are rarely getting fast food these days, but how about your 20's/30's? When you were in your 'fast-food prime' did you ever encounter a "Whammy Burger"?
Obviously most restaurants partake in deceptive marketing regarding their presentation, but the egregious offering that D-Fens got in Falling Down may have been a step beyond. So I wonder, did you ever encounter something to that level?

I once made the mistake of ordering a McGriddle. Not only was it half the size I was expecting, it also tasted like shit. I'd honestly rather lick a dead dogs asshole than touch one of those again.
argyle9000@reddit
Bruh! The McGriddle sounds like it would be amazing. I bought it as a hangover cure once, but it did zero good for me. Such a disappointing menu item.

I remember seeing this and thinking it was about an old man who goes nuts. Yeah, Michael Douglas was 48 when this was filmed. Forty-eight. Younger than some of us in this sub.
oskich@reddit
The older I get, the more I sympathize with his character š
foehammer111@reddit
Yeah, try not to sympathize too much with him. That was literally the whole point of the movie. He thinks heās just standing up for whatās right, but keeps getting more and more extreme. By the end of the movie heās literally a domestic terrorist. He even had a realization at the end that heās become the bad guy.

I don't. robert duvall sure...not douglas. the guy was an angry abusive man.
01100010x@reddit
I've never seen this movie, but I've been served a ton of shorts on YouTube this week. I plan to watch it soon, BUT from the shorts not only is it obvious he is angry, abusive, and racist, but he's also incapable of comprehending the systemic cause of EVERYTHING that seems to drive him crazy. This is a film about how capitalism destroys a man... like Death of a Salesman or... The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Pissed with inflation? Take it out on the Asian store owner.
Angry about the quality of the fast food? Fuck the fast food employees.
What an asshole.
scoff-law@reddit
He's also a defense contractor.
I think the problem with this movie is that Michael Douglas is just insanely charismatic. Or maybe that's why it works.
Away-Quantity928@reddit
Typical boomer.
cnhn@reddit
You forgot gigantically entitled. Heās in the Parthenon of characters that if you think heās the hero you missed then entire point.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Duvall cheated on his wife. The world is scum in that movie, just like the real one!

When I was 16 I sympathized with Dfense but when I re-watched it in my 30s I came to the same conclusion as you
bluemitersaw@reddit
I am 48... so ya, I feel attacked pretty hard right now.
Mysterious_Fennel459@reddit
I just cant stand places like McDonalds and BK Lounge because they've forgotten what they're supposed to be. Cheap!
Thankfully I get those BK Lounge coupons in the mail and the codes work well after they say they expire so I still get somewhat of a good deal.
marcos_MN@reddit
I donāt want them to remake this movie.
But if they do, Glenn Howerton should play the lead.

I went into KFC on a hot day to buy a soda, and they let me know, after they had my money, that their ice machine was broken.
ScreenTricky4257@reddit
KFC chickens appear to have all contracted leprosy. You get a bucket and the skin just sloughs off.
Pseudorealizm@reddit
KFC has become one of the most disgusting places I've ever eaten at. The grease on the chicken turns into congealed slime in minutes. Just seeing their food makes me gag and I have no idea how anyone manages to eat it. Last I heard it was almost 50 dollars for a bucket of chicken!?
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
KFC used to have the best bbq chicken wings. Those things were so crunchy, sticky, sweet, and just goddamn delicious.
TuckerCarlsonsOhface@reddit
Yeah, by my first McDonaldās. I was raised by raging hippies, so never had fast food, but when I was old enough to go to sleepovers at friendās houses I got to have a happy meal for the first time. The burger looked exactly like the flat crap he got in the movie, and I was crushed. Itās also when I learned how advertising worked. I have never trusted a single ad since then; Iāll believe it when I see it for myself.
CubeEarthShill@reddit
One of my college girlfriends interned for a company that specialized in making fake food for fast food chain print ads. Their biggest client was McDonaldās. For the TV ads, they have an entire mock up restaurant in California IIRC.

I feel like your parents did you a disservice by not imparting that level of cynicism to you sooner. My parents talked about how much of a scam EVERYTHING is from the time when my older sister (5 years older) was old enough to dial a phone to call āSanta Claus.ā My older sister did call, racking up a phone bill my parents couldnāt afford, and I will never forget that she handed the phone to me and it was a recording. Now my steadfast belief is that anyone trying to sell you something you didnāt ask for is a scammer. I have never been proven wrong.

This movie. I felt uncomfortable watching it when I was a kid. But then when I revisited it, I got it so much more.
As far as the hamburger part, I did my bit in fast food, and I did my best make things look good (even for 'those' customers)

Reminder: D-Fens was not the antihero, you weren't meant to think he was.

Now being middle-aged, I TOTALLY understand this man.

Lol I recall junior high, taco bell launched some version of nachos that, judging by the ads, were the most perfect ideal nachos. My friend was OBSESSED. At a basketball tournament, the opportunity came to go with another teammate to taco bell. She was gone, and came back half singing that she had the beautiful perfect nachos.
Then she opened the box, and it was like the taco bell guy shook the nachos after making them. It was like they'd used the ends of 3 tortilla chip bags, and it was a mess. I still recall her gasp when she opened the box.

I always like to compare this scene to the one in The Founder where Ray Kroc goes to McDonald's for the first time and there's this smiling young man who's only too happy to serve him. What happened to us?
(Fun fact: Kroc is played by Michael Keaton, whose real name was also Michael Douglas, so there's a connection there)
Worth_Specific3764@reddit
omg I literally have these glasses I just got them for the beginning of Spring holy crap
IllumiNIMBY@reddit
Popeye's Chicken does this constantly. They used to be good, but now they whammy the customers almost every time. It isn't portion size that's the problem, though. It's that they're always out of half of what you order (oh, you wanted gravy on your mashed potatoes?) and/or they'll fry the chicken in oil that's so old, dirty, and overheated, it might as well be motor oil. I don't understand why anyone still eats there.

God this movie. Watching it when I was younger, I thought it was kind of cool. Frustrated dude finally give the come uppance to the world that did him wrong. Then I got into my late 30ās and watched it again with a bit more of a discerning eye. Yeah, doesnāt hold up and is not what I thought it was. The best Iāve got for it was that it was a product of the times.
