Who do you use for weather?

Wondering who everyone uses or finds to be most accurate for weather.
I was just looking at the weather given the chance of severe weather today and nobody seems to agree ? The weather app on my phone says it's gonna rain 7-9 pm, Weather.com is telling me 3-5pm, and AccuWeather is telling me 11pm. I'm astonished by how different they are and don't know who to listen to
PitifulRow705@reddit

Evan Andrews on Facebook. Recently retired Fox 4 meteorologist. He'll go live during major events. Posts a ton of good info.
For radar I have the Fox 4 WAPP. If I turn on the TV then usually the WFAA app.
Tipsy247@reddit
Does he have a YouTube channel. I don't use Facebook
smoke_inyoureyes@reddit
Damn I didn’t know he retired. I’ve always liked the Fox local weather crew here, every crew here is great but Evan and Dan specifically I feel like I’ve grown up with living here lmao

Remember when Trump made massive cuts to the NWS and NOAA and the already difficult-to-predict weather became even harder to predict?
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
Whoever downvoted this is asleep. The full effects of the cuts won’t even take effect until 2027, after the midterms.
We’re going to make almanacs great again! Just like what our great great grandparents used! /s I realize modern radar has literally saved thousands of lives.
JPhi1618@reddit
Was downvoted because we don’t need politics injected into a simple ask for an app recommendation.
TopNeighborhood2694@reddit
If I held a gun to your head, would you call that political?
infinity2134@reddit
I would call it systemic
JPhi1618@reddit
That’s weird. I don’t even understand what you’re talking about.
TopNeighborhood2694@reddit
Then maybe next time folks are having a conversation- keep out of it. If you don’t understand nobody’s gonna hold your hand and explain it to you anymore.
JPhi1618@reddit
Wackos like you are why I would rather not have everything devolved into politics. The person that I was replying to specifically asked who downloaded and why they downloaded. I was answering that very very simple question because I was engaging exactly with the conversation. Then I get crazies like you talking about shooting people in the head. If anybody needs to take a step back, it’s you.
lovelylotuseater@reddit
You are inaccurately describing simple cause and effect conversations as political. OP expressed confusion at why the weather models seem so unreliable, and the person at the top of this thread accurately identified that the government agency that supplies data to these weather models had its budget cut.
They didn’t make any statements about team red or team blue, they just accurately stated the reason. Sometimes the cause is action taken by the government, that does not mean that we should all pretend we don’t know what the effect is taking place. Even a hamster knows if it doesn’t want its bed to stink it shouldn’t shit in it.
starglo1969@reddit
Is it politics if it is relevant to the question?
lovelylotuseater@reddit
They accurately stated which government entity made cuts to the government division that is responsible for the data used in weather prediction models. If you don’t like the effect, you should be aware of the cause.
CallMePickle@reddit
There is no app recommendation to give. And they gave the reason as to why that is.

he’s also “North Texas Weather Center” on facebook and instagram if you just want the basics and not an 8 hour stream
IFlyAircrafts@reddit
I found after watching channels like Max that I’m a lot more forgiving of the weather being unreliable.
All of our local meteorologists only focus on a 100 mile radius. So when they claim it’s gonna storm, and it doesn’t they look very wrong.
But if you watch the guys covering the whole US you realize that no one was wrong, the storm just developed a bit more to the north.
It really gave me an appreciation to weather after watching the storm chasers.
CuriousCamels@reddit
Most people don’t understand just how complex predicting the weather is. Atmospheric science majors took the second most physics classes when I was in college. Second only to us physics majors of course.
The math and science that goes into predicting the weather is complicated, and you’re trying to account for a ton of different variables. One or two things slightly changing can drastically alter a storm’s path and intensity.
Max Velocity is solid though. He knows what he’s talking about, and does a good job keeping people informed and safe.
Resonance_Forms@reddit
If you have storm anxiety, I do not recommend Max.
SignificantLilNobody@reddit
Max is great! Highly recommend!

Rick Mitchell is my go to. He’s considered the best, or one of the best, meteorologists on TV in North Texas according to other professional meteorologists (I’ve read them saying this about him on Reddit). He’s knowledgeable, easy to lesson to, and to understand. He also doesn’t do gimmicks like you know it’s serious when my tie comes off and stuff like that.

Joking, kinda. I do a little forecasting for my job and I prefer him of all the local TV meteorologists.

This! This! This! RICK IS THE BEST! As someone who has storm anxiety, Rick is so calm compared to the other guy that scares the shit out of me! Even their graphics are intense. Rick just wants you to stay calm and weather aware AND to put your damn shoes on! 😂😂 LOVE RICK!!

MadScallop@reddit
The most annoying to me is I’m almost convinced a lot of news outlets sensationalize for clicks.
It’s always tonight-is-the-end-of-humanity so cortisol spikes and people check constantly. Gotta have the ad revenue for the shareholders.
3huhyeah3@reddit
I think you hit the nail on the head with the sensationalism. That goes for all “news.” The weather forecasts should come with a “for entertainment purposes only.”
MadScallop@reddit
For real. I’m not chancing this storm as it’s big.. but odds of it being anywhere near as bad as they predicted has to be very little.

14Rage@reddit
Use the tv channels. Your (my) phone weather is very very inaccurate, and when my phone is wrong wfaa was right.
There are a ton of different weather models and I think the meteorologists look at them together and make a weather forecast by averaging them intelligently somehow. The phone app seems to just be a single model, and so it really struggles on a bunch of fronts when you actually care about details.
Yarusenai@reddit

It's just really hard to forecast exactly when and where the storm(s) will happen.
I use wunderground for the hour by hour forecast, but today that has changed a bit every time I updated it.
I'll check radar before going out, just to be safe.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
I always keep a hoodie in my car. I like to throw that on in a surprise downpour over an umbrella, because unbrellas are not safe in lightning. A tarp is a good thing too, in case hail breaks glass, you have coverage.
GeorgiaBlueOwl@reddit
The Weatherwise app. It gives a lot of good info, even for the free version. I also watch Ryan Hall Y’all on YouTube and Rick Mitchell on NBC 5.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
I go outside and look at the sky. Yellow means storms, green means tornadoes. Go inside if the electricity in the air makes the hairs on your forearms stand up.
You can also feel for those down drafts. Typically, a big storm is going to bring in a sudden drop in temperatures. Cold air falls. So you’ll feel a downward wind, and then updrafts that suck things back upwards. You’ll get a good feel for what the weather is going to do here without needing an app.
Always have what you need for a power outage ready. Batteries, a flash light, candles, pantry food, pet carriers in case you all need to shelter in a hurry, some rugs to throw over your car if it’s going to hail and you don’t have covered parking, tarps. Being ready will give you some peace of mind.
Have sweet tea ready and watch the clouds, it’s quite enjoyable!
