Do you rewash washing that’s been left on the line overnight?

There’s been times I haven’t got my washing in overnight. Unless it’s rained through the night, I don’t rewash it. My friend says this is gross. Does everyone else rewash it?
ZuckDeBalzac@reddit
Why, does the fresh air turn off at night or something?
koalabear20@reddit
I mean the clothes wouldn’t dry properly and probably end up smelling lol
kettlejuices@reddit
I think the idea is more that the laundry was put up during the day, left overnight and then taken down, not that they put it up at night.
VictoryAppropriate68@reddit
Very much depends on if it smells damp, which it sometimes does after being left out overnight I’ll re-wash. Bit of it still smells nice like my washing powder then no
Savings-Syllabub-871@reddit
Honestly depends how long it’s been out there:
- A few hours / overnight: I’d just shake it out and you’re good
- A couple of days: I’d probably rewash, especially if it smells a bit “damp
- If it smells musty at all: definitely rewash, no question
That damp smell doesn’t really go away once it’s there.
Infamous-Ordinary-39@reddit
I don't rewash if it's a light rain. It's just an extra rinse! I don't rewash if left overnight.
o_sooperstar_o@reddit
I live in a first floor flat and have to go downstairs to my garden. Like heck am I washing again for no reason. Even if it rained. Rainwater isn't dirty.
Ok_Shirt983@reddit
Rain water isn't always dirty, but quite often it can contain dust dirt and sand. If you have a car that often a good tell, if it's dried after the rain with a layer of grime on it, then your clothes will have too.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
I am never lazy enough to leave it out overnight but I bring it in because dew makes everything slightly musky smelling
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
It’s not about laziness. I prioritise my son, my dog, my home, my work and my happiness over rushing out in the dark to get the washing in.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
I'd consider chores part of priorities around the house tbh. Planning washing so it's dry before the dark. A small bit of organising makes life easy as 🤷♂️
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
It must be lovely living in your ivory tower. Meanwhile I stick a load on when I get a chance and get it in when I can. I am a single mother working full time. I organise the fuck out of my days and washing isn’t anywhere near the top of my list of things to organise as long as everyone has clean, ironed clothes in their wardrobe each morning. I’m good.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
Yet still able to post on Reddit hahah fuck off Nice musky clothing.
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
I think, given the comments, you are in the minority here. It’s clear you have no clue about running a busy household.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
You have time to read the comments? Huh. Get the washing in lazy. Ta ra
Neddlings55@reddit
Why would you rewash it?
BertieBus@reddit
In case the owls and the spiders wipe their willies on it 🙄
salem_and_the@reddit
So funny 😂
BarSalt970@reddit
Omg I hadn't thought of that
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
Washing that takes too long to dry has a very distinct and unpleasant smell, that others around you can smell
resident_queerdo@reddit
Isn't that when it dries too slowly though?
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
Aren’t they the same thing?
resident_queerdo@reddit
I wouldn't say so no. There are some things that are notorious for drying slowly, like my work fleeces. So I time that load very well, make sure I take it out the second it's done and make sure it dries efficiently, in the sun for instance.
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
What is the difference between ‘takes too long to dry’ and ‘dries too slowly’ ?
They are literally the same thing in different words
resident_queerdo@reddit
True but I think we still mean different things. Makes no difference if it's left on the line for longer, so long as it's dried swiftly.
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
I don’t think so, I think you just repeated what I said, but, somehow disagreed with me
resident_queerdo@reddit
It depends on the kind of fabric. Some are more sensitive in that respect than others. But you know, you can be right, I don't mind. At the end of the day, it's laundry. 🤷♂️
Street-Frame1575@reddit
It's wet until it's dry
That's how it works
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
That has nothing to do with the time scale though
Street-Frame1575@reddit
Sorry, twas a joke.
Street-Frame1575@reddit
For those unfamiliar....
caniuserealname@reddit
It would take the same amount of time to dry regardless of how long it's been left on the line though... so what does that matter?
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
My point is, if your washing has been taking too long to dry, you may rewash it to avoid the must smell
Happy_Chief@reddit
That is disconnected from being out over night.
Yes, washing that takes too long to dry, whether indoors or outdoors, will smell.
Washing outside overnight ≠ stinky washing
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
But the question I am answering is
I would rewash my clothes if they had been overnight and were at risk of smelling. I never said that being overnight is inherently going to make them smell
Happy_Chief@reddit
Yeah, the answer could also be "because a bird shat on it" or "because next door had a BBQ and they're smokey"
None of that relates to being out overnight, which is what the;
question is asking.
darklinkuk@reddit
The smelly smell that smells....
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
It’s an awful pissy smell that too many people have
darklinkuk@reddit
I'd say musty almost damp
Pissy is a whole other problem!
NotoriousP_U_G@reddit
I would say it is a damp pissy smell
acceberbex@reddit
But it's dried outside and just been blowing about in the breeze? That's not about drying slowly?
Neddlings55@reddit
I know what musty washing smells like.
Leaving dry washing on the line overnight doesnt cause it.
I recently left my washing on the line for 3 days. Still smells glorious.
Sea-Still5427@reddit
I would if I lived in an area of high pollution and it had rained or passing birds and bees had marked it heavily. Seagull poo from a height can cover quite a wide area.
Commercial-Bat-4534@reddit
I have OCD and would never put clean washing outside on a line but I think it's ridiculous if you're someone who does dry outside to rewash because of night time?
What about it being night makes it dirty
Top_Classic8445@reddit
Unless a load of bird had shit all other the washing, why the hell would you rewash it?! How old is your friend??
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
We’re both in our forties and if there was something obvious on the clothes, I found a snail trail on a pair of jeans once, they’re getting put into to the ironing pile. I haven’t got time for this shit.
I’m glad other people agree with me
BarSalt970@reddit
....you iron jeans?
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
Just the bits that don’t cling to the fat 😂
HenryHarryLarry@reddit
I live in the countryside and a neighbour told me that leaving your washing out overnight is something folk will judge you for. Sign you are a slattern, basically. I imagine the friend has absorbed some of this old fashioned attitude.
A heavy dew can mean it gets wet again at night but so long as you get it dry that won’t make it unhygienic.
Some_Masterpiece6639@reddit
No I never rewash it, I love the fresh air smell of laundry dried outside.
emerald7777777@reddit
I frequently put the washing out before going to bed, if the forecast is good. I know it will be dry by morning if I do that. Even if gets rained on I’ll often leave it out to dry again.
lacksfocusattimes@reddit
I can’t see the washing line from the rooms I am usually in. It’s not unknown for me to forget about it and leave it out for 2 nights. It might be rained on more than once.
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
This is my problem. My washing line isn’t visible from my day to day rooms and I just forget.
MikeGalactic@reddit
No, because that would be psychotic.
Low-Suit-3125@reddit
Reddit is a strange place
Complex-Honeydew-111@reddit
No. I am not mental.
belladonnapopsocks@reddit
No, I love a crispy towel that smells more like nature than detergent. Bliss after a bath.
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
The exfoliation benefits of those towels is second to none
belladonnapopsocks@reddit
Bacteria attracting loofah? No way, the towel gets it all 😂
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
I’ll wash them after, just might leave them on the line for a night or two 🤷🏽♀️😂
belladonnapopsocks@reddit
😂
No-Door-3181@reddit
Does she think the boogeyman comes out to shit on her clothes or something?
Stunning-Pudding-514@reddit
Not a chance, most of the time my washing could be out on the line a week or more before bring it in.
koalabear20@reddit
why are you not bringing your clothes in mate lmao
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
Because I’ve got a million other priorities 😂. Keeping other humans alive is my main one, I then have to make money to keep said humans (and dog, don’t forget the dog) alive.
Cool_Doubt2152@reddit
What 😂😂
What would be the point of putting it on the line in the first place if you were going to rewash it again?
Does your friend think you do it for the good of your health or..?
ProgressMiserable878@reddit
I rarely leave it on the line overnight. But if I did I'd rewash to freshen up on a 15 min wash.
acceberbex@reddit
No, everyone tells me that's wrong but it'll stay outside for days if I forget it. Nothing wrong with a rain water rinse every now and then. Obviously if there's bird shit then yeh, but just because I left them outside beyond drying time? Nope!
lost-in-midgard@reddit
Your friend sounds like a nincompoop
Puzzled-Barnacle-200@reddit
Night air isn't any dirtier than day air. As long as a bird hasn't pooped on it, you're all good
Far-Sir-825@reddit
No, no and thrice no. Why the heck would you rewash clean washing?
spoo4brains@reddit
What does your friend think that happens during the night that doesn't happen during the day?
Current_Fly9337@reddit (OP)
I have no idea. She made me feel like I was a psychopath for forgetting I had washing on the line from the day before and then just folding it.
flangeflangeflanges@reddit
No, of course not. I don’t even rewash if it’s rained.
SoberShiv@reddit
What an absurd waste of water
littlebird2446@reddit
How would it be gross? It’s just been outside in the fresh air.
Lots of people are annoyingly over the top about hygiene or germs.
speculativeinnature@reddit
No. What’s gross about it?
OkTechnician4610@reddit
No it’s not going to get dirty overnight unless birds pooped on it or it rained overnight.
switchypapi@reddit
That defeats the point
horsepowerwagon8@reddit
Years ago I read a feng shui book that said that washing left on the line at night attracted bad chi. I didn’t believe anything in that book but for some reason that stuck with me and I rush to get the washing in when it’s getting dark. So probably, yes.
schemmenti@reddit
Only if it smells damp. Sometimes I give it 10 minutes in the tumble.
TapeDeckSlick@reddit
I think they're pulling your leg
YOF626@reddit
I never leave it out overnight as I would need to rewash it,
Suratwala@reddit
I don’t believe your friend is clued in.
Low-Window-1553@reddit
I don’t re-wash it (unless it’s been left damp for too long).
Is night time air dirty or something ? I think this is something that’s come from a previous generation and doesn’t make much sense x
Happy_Chief@reddit
Does your friend rewash washing shes had on the line during the day?
If not, they're talking nonsense, since daylight is the only difference between the two scenarios.
If it hasnt rained, and is dry. Who cares?
Dry_Yogurt2458@reddit
What is the difference between it being outside overnight and it being outside in the daytime ?
dream_metrics@reddit
I wouldn't and I don't see the point. Night time air is not any dirtier than daytime air. Probably cleaner
Present_Air_7694@reddit
Why would you wash it again?
ResplendentBear@reddit
I sniff it. Unless it smells musty/sweaty/damp/like a bloody Womble - I'm not rewashing it.
Amazing-Visual-2919@reddit
Nope. I did that just last week and it was fine.
