I think so. I remember her crying was turned into whatever a meme would be called pre-internet, but outside of that, I didn’t pay much attention to sports things.
anananon3@reddit
Why me?
GeetarEnthusiast85@reddit
The film "I, Tonya" does a great job of depicting just how stupid the people around Tonya Harding were when they sabotaged Nancy Kerrigan.
Into-the-stream@reddit
“You’re wrong about” podcast did a fantastic episode on her as well (as well as several other much maligned public personalities of the 80s and 90s. We were wrong about everything.
HumansMustBeCrazy@reddit
You just gone from making one assumption to making another assumption.
To begin with many people assumed that Tonya had something to do with the attack. Then people assume that Tonya had nothing to do with the attack.
It is impossible for any of us on the outside to know exactly how much influence she had on the attackers actions.
People hate admitting when they don't have enough evidence to be certain. Instead they rely on their unreliable feelings to draw conclusions for them.
Into-the-stream@reddit
I don’t think you understand how the podcast works. 1. It is heavily, heavily researched, 2. It is more about challenging assumptions and media bias, than about building new ones. I don’t think it ever came to the conclusion that Tonya was innocent, only that the evidence suggests the initial take the public had was an over-simplification based on a media narrative that pitted “good, wealthy and innocent” against “evil, poor white trash”, and that that media narrative framing is itself the object of scrutiny which the show used the Harding story to examine. It’s always using prominent media stories to examine problematic bias in narratives.
It’s actually an absolutely stellar series that made me think differently about how information is presented, and showed me a capacity for empathy I had never known before. I stopped listening a couple years ago when Mike left, but this conversation is making me realize I want to revisit it and see where it has gone since then.
HumansMustBeCrazy@reddit
Not being able to prove guilt is not the same as being innocent.
I'm not saying that Tonya was innocent or guilty. I'm saying that there is not enough evidence to be sure. Well researched does not invent extra evidence. This event was well researched and not enough evidence was found to assume guilt.
Assuming innocence is just that. Assuming.
thebrokedown@reddit
I think you’d enjoy the podcast. You are not in disagreement as much as you think you are
Into-the-stream@reddit
I really like your comment, because I was starting to get frustrated with him, and you came along and handled the response much better than I was about to. Thank you.
sundaemourning@reddit
i love that podcast. by the time it came out, i already knew Tonya wasn’t the one to blame, but i had no idea just how much of a victim she was in the whole mess.
ouchibitmytongue@reddit
That episode left me feeling profoundly sad for Harding. That girl worked extremely hard for every little thing she had but was still considered a villain for something that really wasn’t her fault.
Remarkable_Term631@reddit
Me too - the early episodes seem tailored to us and what we saw growing up.
specks_of_dust@reddit
Worth watching just for Allison Janney’s depiction of the mom.
HasaDiga_Eebowai@reddit
The woman playing Tonya was good too.
82ndGameHead@reddit
Margot Robbie
And I think those two actresses reunite to play mother and daughter on some TV comedy
HasaDiga_Eebowai@reddit
Am I missing a joke? Or are you thinking of Anna Farris?
SpaceBowie2008@reddit
No Margot Robbie is choice. She was Barbie for fuck sake.
YcemeteryTreeY@reddit
Different blonde white women, they dont all look the same ya know lol
Cautious_Mix_4928@reddit
I think there are plenty of actresses who fit this joke, but man, those two are both exceptional actresses, each in their own respective leagues, for wildly different reasons related to their acting abilities. Like Ana Farris is fucking hilarious with some drama chops and Margot Robbie is just an all around brilliant actress.
YcemeteryTreeY@reddit
Shes great in everything she does
nudave@reddit
They call her…. The Jackal!
VotingRightsLawyer@reddit
Allison Janney is so underrated. Her performance as Tonya's mother was so good, it reminded me a lot of her character in Drop Dead Gorgeous, just much darker, somehow.
AshDogBucket@reddit
She won an Oscar for it, and has tons of Emmys. I don't think she's underrated at all - she's quite celebrated!
VotingRightsLawyer@reddit
It's also her only nomination. I think she deserves more, that's all.
MsNomered@reddit
Just amazing.
AshDogBucket@reddit
There was also a documentary a few years back... and when they showed the real footage of Tonya with whoever her boyfriend/husband was, being interviewed... it was like textbook victim/abuser (i noted at the time while iwas in school for mental health). She looked TERRIFIED of him.
ridinbend@reddit
Well, to be fair, Tonya is an Oregon backwoods, inbred moron herself.
Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit

I was obsessed with figure skating when this happened and lived in Portland where Tonya was a hometown hero
nanneryeeter@reddit
I know a few people who lived in Portland or Vancouver that have a Tonya story.
Liveandletlive-11@reddit
I didn’t know her. I was just a little kid. I think we saw her skating at Lloyd Center in the early 90s right before she went to the Olympics. Sadly that rink is being demolished currently
noblewind@reddit
I can still hear her, "whhhyyyy," anytime this comes up. 🥺
skinnyminnesota@reddit
Such an American story. "I'm at my best, but I'm not THE best, so I'm going to get what I want with violence".
sundaemourning@reddit
except that’s not what happened.
skinnyminnesota@reddit
I'm legitimately curious to hear about what you think happened between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding!
sundaemourning@reddit
Tonya Harding was an underdog in a sport where being beautiful and wealthy was almost a requirement. she was horribly abused first by her mother and then by her husband (he even released their sex tape without her knowledge) and in all likelihood, did not even know that her idiot spouse was plotting an attack on her biggest rival. she was villainized again and again by the media and everyone else all because she was considered to be white trash. the You’re Wrong About podcast has a great two part episode about her and how she was a victim just as much as Nancy Kerrigan was.
skinnyminnesota@reddit
And then she used violence to get what she wanted.
AshDogBucket@reddit
No, she didn't. Her abusive partner did.
skinnyminnesota@reddit
You don’t think she was involved? She pled guilty to conspiracy in the case.
skinnyminnesota@reddit
Oh shit my bad! What happened?

Wait, Harding made a WHAT TAPE??? Who was desperate enough to participate with her??? I guess if the money's right.
AshDogBucket@reddit
Whoa. She was a hot celebrity. Do we call it "desperate" when someone wants to fuck a hot celebrity???
SoCalChrisW@reddit
One of the magazines, Hustler I think, published stills of it.
Jeff was hung like a baby's arm holding an apple if I remember right.
Fair_Blood3176@reddit
I think it was more of she and her husband fooling around with the video camera and someone leaked it. Probably no sex involved just shots of her topless. That's all I saw. Hence the sex tape in quotes. Nothing like a Pamela and Tommy Lee.

Whew! Or kinda.

I almost started a punk band once that was going to be called Jeff Golooney and the Hardings. rm78noir@reddit
This whole thing was bonkers. From start to finish. That was some true real life drama.
As a side bit:
Our local radio station had done a "Meet Nancy Kerrigan" drawing. A number of people would get to meet her live. It was quite the ordeal.
The drawing was done and the event was on.
That morning, the winners of the contest arrived and got to meet Nancy. An older gal that was a city native. It was hilarious.
Nobody thought about the meet date being April 1st. It was great.
ElvisFan2001@reddit
Watched it happen on tv. You may hate me but Tonya deserved the lifetime ban. While she didn’t actually hit Nancy, she damned well knew about it. Yes she had a bad childhood (movie was great and Allison Janney was excellent as her mom) but she knew Nancy was better and wanted herself to win. Just my opinion.
Significant-Style-73@reddit
Tonya was more talented than Nancy, but had fallen out of favor with the judges after an inconsistent 92-93 season. She wanted to be viewed as the #1 American going into the Olympics.
lunapearl83@reddit

pnjtony@reddit
I was nearly 16 years old when it happened. I remember my new years resolution that year was to actively follow the news and world events. Six days into the year and we were given this fascinating gift that at first was local news because I lived in the suburbs of Detroit. For years I had the issue of the Detroit News from the next day saved in a drawer where she was on the front page.
One-Author2996@reddit
I was 16 as well. I remember like it was yesterday. Had a crush on Kerrigan.

Cheston1977@reddit
She was living or staying with a friend near me when the whole thing was in the news. Tons of camera crews outside of a cheap little apartment complex. Years later, I saw her at the Beaverton Fred Meyer and then even more years later, I saw her at a bar down on Macadam, smoking a cig while playing video poker.

notoriousrdc@reddit
I was a huge Oksana Baiul fangirl (still am, I suppose), and I was extremely annoyed that all the local figure skating coverage focused on the attack. Yes, what happened to Nancy Kerrigan was horrible, but I was glued to my TV instead of out with friends because I wanted to watch skating, not the fiftieth rehash of the same true crime story.

Not that I remember? It was in the early 00’s at a friend of a friend’s house (I feel like it was a church thing because that’s where I spent a lot of time at that point of my life). It was wild because aside from being huge he did NOT give off the vibe of someone who got hired to assault someone.

My family includes a lot of Norwegians and we decided to have a family reunion in Lillehammer to coincide with the Olympics there. DgingaNinga@reddit
WHY?? 😭
FormidableMistress@reddit
I did because my Auntie was obsessed with Tonya Harding. She based her opinion of them solely on their physical appearance. She thought Tonya was this adorable petite ballerina of a figure skater, and she believed Nancy kerrigan was too tall and lanky and completely ungraceful. She had very strong opinions on the matter for some reason. I remember her saying she just couldn't believe Tonya would do such a thing, and it must have been staged to get Nancy more sympathy so she'd win.
Poppaslims@reddit
I remember my cousin and I as kids coming up with a whole routine that we performed in front of our family with him pretending to do the figure skating and me in a hoodie running in out of nowhere to kneecap him with an empty paper towel roll. The adults found us very entertaining.
