there's a venue where I live that hosts weddings parties you name it. A few years ago when I first moved here it would drive me crazy because there would be parties nonstop and they would go late into the night. I would call the cops and they would simply laugh it off. Well, now there's been hardly any parties like maybe one or two a month even during peak season and it's been kind of unsettling. The noise used to drive me crazy but now I'm excited whenever I hear the music and even then the parties are a lot smaller and don't go as late as they used to. I've also noticed a lot of the local restaurants are usually empty.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
The farmers market is packed. It’s the cheapest place to get food and people are being forced to actually cook.
DisastrousHyena3534@reddit
I can’t afford my farmers market. It’s bougie AF.
arresteddev7@reddit
Same here in Colorado. They aren't real farmers markets. They're more like artisan booth shops.
AloewareLabs@reddit
The one I went to in Orlando was absolute trash. 1 corporate farm. And packed vendors selling crafts. Big crapshoot
Mintiichoco@reddit
Fr. Grocery outlet and Winco are way cheaper than farmers market lol
Eric_Durden@reddit
Mine too, plus a bunch of vendors were straight caught up selling produce bought from a grocery store at a premium.
thestonernextdoor88@reddit
Isn't that normal?
kingofhearts778@reddit
But it is still fraud.
Eric_Durden@reddit
I wouldn't be surprised. But shopping at a "farmers market" implies your buying direct from people who grew the food.
existing_for_fun@reddit
Yeah, there is an expectation when I go to the farmers market that my food is direct from the farmer. Without the in-between of a grocer / distributer / etc.
Piss_in_my_cunt@reddit
That’s disgusting 😔
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Super cheap here. Earlier this money I bought an entire flat of strawberries(12 pints) for $10z
CaptCurmudgeon@reddit
That's wildly cheap as a retailer of strawberries from the farm next door. Their flat retails for $16. My product sells for $18 but it's delivered to your house. Hell of a price considering all that's going on. Farm labor must be particularly cheap near you.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
They’re back up to $15 a flat but I’m so sick of them I can’t buy it. I think they just had a massive glut of them.
thinkstohimself@reddit
Where tf are farmers markets cheaper than grocery stores?? Cheaper than Whole Foods maybe.
Camco94@reddit
For the past maybe 8-10 months, I've been exclusively shopping at whole foods are consistently much cheaper than Publix (at least for the things I buy) since amazon took over.
Used to call it whole paycheck... not anymore.
CoffeeOrDestroy@reddit
Sad thing is Whole Foods is usually cheaper than Publix now.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Publix charges double for every single thing
RhubarbSelkie@reddit
Central Valley California. I'm in the North Bay/Napa Valley (and also go to the farmers markets in the East Bay and Sacramento sometimes) and it's cheaper here too, in part because of the proximity to the central valley.
Meat is still more expensive (because you're paying for ethically raised stuff at the farmers market) but produce and eggs are usually cheaper.
hidefinitionpissjugs@reddit
people should be doing this regardless
ElegantAsparagus315@reddit
If it were actually a farmers market and not just some place for people to sell overpriced “artisan” kitsch, I might.
I’d love if our farmers markets were as abundant and normalized as they are in SE Asia.
HeadBarracuda01@reddit
one of my hot takes is that "farmers' market" should be a legally protected term somehow (trademarked? idk how all that works). like you should have to have more than 50% of your stalls selling unprepared food in order to be called a "farmers' market."
my local one has one seasonal produce stand and everything else is knick knacks, baked goods, coffee. i go sometimes, but like... that's a craft fair, not a farmers' market.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
They should but a lot of people don’t.
NoTerm3078@reddit
I wish our farmers market was cheap. It's the opposite here, rich people shop there and the rest of us go to normal or discount grocery stores.
iamthelee@reddit
US credit card debt being at an all time high is pretty concerning. People are being forced to take on a ton of credit card debt to basically not become homeless.
AloewareLabs@reddit
I found it odd, suddenly I’m also getting larger credit line offers from a couple of my banks. Even though my credit score has been stagnant
Financial-Parsley482@reddit
A HUGE annual local plant sale had very few venders and hardly anyone at the front gates prior to opening. 9-1pm and just a trickle of people with what once was a huge onslaught of people with their wagons and wheelbarrows ready to shop! It was shocking. I attend every year and this is the first time I’ve ever seen it like this.
geoshoegaze20@reddit
I stopped doing a garden. It's hard to grow when you don't have access to agriculture level irrigation with the heat waves anymore. I gave up on Spring lettuce. This year I planted clover for my chickens.
FormerNeighborhood80@reddit
Our summer heat is too much for any garden. It’s also too much for me. Our water bill is already too high and we are in a drought.
AloewareLabs@reddit
This. When I briefly moved back to my small hicktown of 1800 pop. My water bill was 50 a month for a 1 bedroom. Turns out the city transferred water management to americanWater. Everything jumped after that
hera-fawcett@reddit
we live in tornado storm land area. its been a bitch trying to keep our outdoor baby garden running.
52BeesInACoat@reddit
The heat two summers ago killed my zucchini. I didn't think it was possible to kill zucchini. We had three back to back weeks of 100 F temperatures.
That same year, we had an aboveground pool. I had one of those janky external water filters for it. It had two hoses that you'd stick into the pool water, and one drew water into the filter and the other pumped it back out into the pool again.
I turned the filter on and then I left it running while I went to do other stuff. Half an hour later, I'm washing dishes and I see out my kitchen window that one of the filter hoses has fallen out of the pool, so the filter is now drawing water up and then pumping it onto the ground. I ran outside, expecting my yard to be flooded, but it was already over 100 F that day and had been all week, so the ground was not spongy and the yard did not look flooded. Half the pool was drained and it'd just evaporated or been immediately absorbed into the ground.
OldStretch84@reddit
I don't know how large your garden is, but I slowly integrated 5 gallon reservoir tanks with solar powered pumps to irrigation lines. I can do each pump/tank for around $50 and then not really further cost unless you have to repair an irrigation line. Honestly buying a repair kit gives you so much replacement hosing, connectors, and spikes you're good for a while.
I even screwed up and left my pumps out over winter, NOT TURNED OFF, through the crazy ice storm, and they still work just fine.
I have 3 tanks/pumps that cover 3 2x4 beds, 1 3×6 bed, 1 4×8 bed, and several grow bags. I could probably cover more with what I have if I had more beds.
WhyDoIEvenBotheridk@reddit
This is a really cool idea
OldStretch84@reddit
I actually started using them in the house for houseplants because I always forgot to water them. Then I found solar pumps and decided to use them outdoors, too.

Whathewhat-oo-@reddit
Going forward, the only way I’d have a garden is to have irrigation such as this.
uselessbynature@reddit
Beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, peas.
All super easy to start from seeds and for me grow like weeds (i make my own compost and don’t use pesticides). Pumpkins are fine for kids and jack O lantern pumpkins are stupidly expensive. Strawberries and asparagus get going like crazy once established but I can’t start them from seed to save my life.
Saves me other money because instead of having a life I dig in the dirt. It’s good for the soul.
geoshoegaze20@reddit
Yeah. The only thing that grows are beans, kale and radishes. Cucumbers get rust here. I can grow cherry tomatoes, but normal tomatoes all get blight and die. To me, I tried convincing myself it was a wise financial investment until last year when I was in the red about $400 and all I pulled out was green beans and cherry tomatoes. I tried growing brussels and they got fungus. It's wiser for me to take that money and invest it in infrastructure like a foundation drain.
GaK_Icculus@reddit
1-4 tubing for drip irrigation, connections, and timer can be had for <$200 and will last for years with minor maintenance. Connect to a spigot and go.
geoshoegaze20@reddit
Here's the dilemma. I already invested $300 for a fence to keep deer out. Your costs don't stop with just drip irrigation system. You have to pay for the water. We also don't have bee's where I live, so things don't pollinate well. The bees have been killed by heavy Ag. I also have heavier soil here and am susceptible to blight. It's not even close to worth it. It requires too much maintenance and investment. And I'm in Iowa where it's suppose to be conducive to gardening. At the end of the day it's a hobby, not a wise financial investment.
GaK_Icculus@reddit
That’s a can’t do attitude if I’ve ever heard one. I’m in the Great Plains too, have family in Iowa and I know for a fact that you could scavenge for unwanted materials for fencing. I grow tomatoes, peppers, garlic, potatoes and onions, none of which require bees for pollination. Stuff will grow in clay rich soils too.

Tons of ads for those apps that give you a small ($250-$500) unsecured line of credit. They are often depicting someone unable to buy food at the grocery store or vending machine and then after they install the app they are happy because now they have negative money instead of zero money.
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
I’ve seen many of these ads, too.
Related, I bought a new black suit last week and the first payment option was an advertisement to chop the purchase price into pieces and pay over time. It was only $250. But it seems there’s a cracking demand for this kind of service currently.
AloewareLabs@reddit
Even my rental portal suddenly has some app program to split payments now.

True_mourning84@reddit
I mean they have buy now pay later cards at 35-40% interest. I buy amazon in those to help my credit but its about a $10+ on a purchase if you pay it super early. I might make 1-3 payments total of 20+ scheduled. But ease of credit is a huge sign.

When I get gas half of the pumps have exactly $10, $15 or $20 on them from the previous person.
Autocorrectcaptcha@reddit
When people start not topping off at Costco it’ll be too late.
ljr55555@reddit
The 50 minute queue at Costco for gas yesterday probably isn't a good sign either. They hadn't raised their prices for the day, so they were at four bucks when everyone else around was bumping to against five. So many people had three or four 5 gallon gas cans to fill up too.
The_Dutchess-D@reddit
Costco is actually opening a bunch of freestanding gas stations on their own now that won't be connected to bigger Costco store locations.

Time-Department14@reddit
Had to return rented lawn equipment for planting grass. They always want equipment returned with full tank. Stopped to replace what fuel I used. It totaled $1.20.
Sweet-thyme@reddit
That makes sense too!
daveeff@reddit
Yes. Today at the gas station I was in line behind a lady that bought $24 worth of gas, cash. Seemed like an odd amount.
Time-Department14@reddit
Regardless of what part of town, and what payment methods are used, way to be aware of your surroundings. Nicely done.
keinezeit44@reddit
I've seen this too. The last couple of times I got gas I made a point of driving around the pumps just to see what the last purchase amounts were. A significant portion were for $10 or $20.
Federal-Emphasis-934@reddit
To be fair I’ll put ten in to get me to BJs for the discount. Same concept for people leaving the city after work (gas is more expensive in the metro area than the burbs).

Walmart this past Saturday was unusually quiet/not much floor traffic. I chatted with the cashier, who told me management is slashing their hours because their sales are way down. People can't afford to buy stuff even at walmart. And walmart prices are frankly no longer cheap.
ModernSimian@reddit
This last weekend was the last weekend of the month. Walmart is always slower then. Benefits checks come in on the 1st. Go again this week and it will be slammed.
SomewhereNo8378@reddit
I find that I don’t really need to buy much of anything from big box stores these days. Target, walmart, I haven’t been to any of them in many months.
Wise_Artichoke6552@reddit
I mean tbf they don't seem to sell stuff of value. I was talking to someone about this last week, I don't shop at target because they don't have a single thing I need. I don't need cheaply made men's clothing, grossly overpriced home decor, or cosmetics, and their pharmacy sucks. Their groceries aren't cheaper or better than anywhere else, they only carry Apple phone products, and we don't need a tv or a vaccuum. I guess if I needed a lot of towels quickly, I'd go to target. Sometimes when my partner is sad she'll buy a lego kit, but they don't have much variety.
KarlMarxButVegan@reddit
I didn't shop at Walmart for twenty years. Now I get nearly all of my groceries there because I can't stomach the prices at Publix.
arresteddev7@reddit
We built a greenhouse and chicken coop a couple of years ago. I also started making my own bread. We now buy our meat in bulk from a rancher (half cow and full lamb currently hanging for us right now and will be ready in a week or so). Other than some basic staples like toilet paper and paper towels, we don't shop much anymore either. We bulk purchased dried beans and rice prior to Trump 2.0 presidency too. I could see the writing on the wall with tariffs so we went out and stocked up then before prices increased even more.
tjean5377@reddit
Same finishing up my canned stuff from last year, have a few months of venison left from last hunting season. Prepped pantry with lots of dried beans... Gotta get chickens....

Which I had stocked up before Trump 2.0, dang. I’m at least more prepared now but it still sucks
8-bitFloozy@reddit
I run Online Grocery in the Texas Panhandle... we have been busier than ever this week, and we bumped the schedule for next week. But the basket size metric has dropped, people are making multiple smaller orders instead of a 200-250 haul, so that's why we are having a bottleneck of our pickers only getting a 30 item walk instead of 100. And a full parking lot picking up those smaller orders. Seeing the customers who used to pick up weekly doing small batches.
AdAble557@reddit
Yeah makes me wonder what the alternative stores are for better prices. Heck even alsi getting expensive
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
Both of my preferred grocery stores are completely empty these days. Empty parking lot, no customers, one open checkout line.
Even the self checkout lines are closed.
And my favorite gas station was closed for the first time since I’ve been using it a few days ago. Pumps were working, paid with my debit card, but the station itself was closed and padlocked.
I run my errands early in the day, but we’re talking ghost town.

never never never pay for things with your debit card, only use it to get cash. if it gets skimmed they have access to your money
credit cards are what should be used, just make sure to pay them off every month
Faribo_Greg@reddit
Branded debit cards still havw fraud protection. At least my visa debit card does. Would be a pain to deal with, but it's there.
SparseSpartan@reddit
At least with chargebacks, the protections provided by a credit card are a bit more extensive.
Arafel_Electronics@reddit
and how long will your money be tied up in the meantime? mortgage company/landlord take an iou until you get it straightened out?
Faribo_Greg@reddit
Pretty aggro huh for a different view response.
So I'll take the same view in response bs having a discussion regarding differing views.
I'm far from paycheck to paycheck bro, so yeah, tie up my entire debit card linked account. I'm good.
ABoutDeSouffle@reddit
In the US, don't you have debit card with a chip? All over Europe, they are NFC, but contain a chip so you cannot skim the data.
Camco94@reddit
To add on as to why.... It's the way the laws apply to debit cards vs credit cards, the credit card is by far (like not even close) the better choice as far as consumer protection goes. Banks are not obligated to help you if fraudulent charges are not reported within 60 days IIRC on a debit card. Even before 60 days consumer is liable for up to something like $500. I always leave my debit card locked in my banking app.
Green_Juggernaut_410@reddit

Credit cards are the barrier. If someone steals my credit card info, that's the credit card company's problem.

For a lot of rural folks, walmart is all that's left to fuck. If they leave, we've got nothing. The mom and pops left long ago and won't be coming back.
Versificator@reddit
they cant till walmart goes.
thenletskeepdancing@reddit
But at this point, there's no guarantee mom and pop will come back and meanwhile if the walmart closes down there's nowhere to shop. I mean, great if that provides incentive for the local businesses to come back. But there's no guarantee and meanwhile you're burning gas going to the next town.
MrBrawn@reddit
They leave now and pops come back. Thats what the "free market" is supposed to do, fill demand. These corpose are so far up their own asses. They cant think past the current quarter and will justify it as soon as the last rat gets out with their bag.
thenletskeepdancing@reddit
Great theory unless the "market adjustments" fall in your timeline.
MrBrawn@reddit
Oh dont get me wrong, if they were to disappear overnight, it would still take a while to be effective. The problem is that we dont have free (with common sense laws) trade so the manipulation and fraud run rampant, thus jacking prices.

I swear, Costco has absorbed all of the Walmart traffic lately in my area. I go to Costco fairly regularly on my way home from work. I normally go on a weekday evening since in the past it’s usually pretty quiet. But I swear that the “holiday” crowd never left. There’s usually a decent uptick in October - December. But that crowd has not gone away at all. If anything, the crowd has gotten bigger.
modernswitch@reddit
I had to go to a Walmart last night at 6:30 pm, and it was almost empty. I didn’t even have to wait in line. I don’t know if it is a fluke. I typically only go around 9 am to avoid crowds. I thought it was odd that there were a few open parking spots as usually I have to circle around finding a spot in the morning.

My local Walmart is starting to put SO MUCH STUFF out in the bigger walk areas to almost push somebody to buy it. I'm talking racks of clothes and shoes that are heavily discounted at the front of the store. Normally for my Walmart these would be like 2 racks of clothes and shoes put out in the center of the store. But now they are packing the front of the store with this stuff, I assume because people aren't even spending that much time to wander to the middle of the store. People used to SWARM these racks not even 2 years ago and now nobody even stops to look.

In a moment of rare super exhaustion, I stopped at Jack in the Box on the way home from work for dinner. A few going through the drive thru, but the dining room? Deserted. Every table sterile clean. I had the place to myself and it was a bit eerie. Took my sweet time eating and no one came in the entire time. The second indicator I’ve seen is yard sales. Used to see maybe one sign if the weather was good. In the last 6 weeks the increase of yard sale signs all over town is exponential. They are on every corner, and now sometimes two or three signs for different yard sales on the same corner. People seem to be selling their stuff like mad. And the third, which to me is clever but also kind of sad, I’ve had two different people approach me to sell me homemade burritos. For $18 to $20 each! Both times it was the hard sell but I had to decline. Oh yeah and an honorable mention: a lot of manly truck dudes that I know are suddenly driving smaller 4 cylinder cars and leaving their trucks at home because of the price of gas. I see no end in sight and it’s all so quietly terrifying.

I drive a Mazda that old and no joke, it would take me basically being given a brand new car for free to give it up. It’s new enough that it has plenty of airbags, traction control, ABS, and handles great. It’s been paid off for a decade, and replacing it with the 2026 version of the same vehicle would cost at least $50k. I really don’t know how people are surviving right now, I have very little discretionary funds left every month and my mortgage is reasonable and I don’t have a car payment. A house down the street just rented for $5k a month, where do people come up with that money just for housing?

And if I need a GPS, well, that’s what a phone mount is for.
I’d rather none of that stuff be integrated into the car otherwise lol.
90s cars really were the peak imo, where you get the benefit of just enough tech to have efficient EFI, but you still get analog tactile switches and buttons for the climate controls.
It’s a car and it doesn’t need to pretend to be a smartphone.
GirlWhoCodes25@reddit
The analog switches and buttons are the best, luckily some car manufacturers are starting to move back to those since they realized we don’t want built in iPads in our cars lol

Weird, but indicator nonetheless: Online games and other programs are changing things up so that people are induced to spend money or watch more ads. For example, Duolingo has a system in which you have to have a certain amount of "energy" to complete lessons. You can sign up for a subscription, which gets you unlimited energy. In the free edition, you can watch ads to get a certain number of energy points.
In the free edition, Duolingo used to let people get 5 energy points per ad watched; now it's down to 3 points. In addition, they are pushing free tryouts of their subscription more and even offered a month-long preview

Yep! Just helped my sister with her annual garage sale. She only really sells kids clothing, shoes, and toys. A few houseware items, but the bulk is kids stuff. Nothing big or expensive. Usually she makes about $500 for the two day sale. This year she cleared over $1200. In fact after day one she was frantically having my mom and I help her add stuff because she had empty tables. I have never in my life seen so many people at a garage sale. It was truly bananas. My guess is that $1 clothes at a garage sale for a summer wardrobe beats a lot of thrift prices now. It did so well I think we will have another one before school starts.
LaineyValley@reddit
Curious about where your sister gets her.inventory? And how can she make a profit selling items for $1?
flossyrossy@reddit
It’s not really inventory. It’s just stuff they don’t need anymore. She has a lot of kids of various sizes and a small home, so she constantly has items they have grown out of, toys they don’t like anymore, etc. None of it is really “profit” as she buys most of the stuff new. It’s just a way to declutter while getting some cash to get new things for them.

Also, you can kind of tell how well the job market and the economy is doing by the cost of used items. When things are going well, you can get great deals because people are selling just to clean out their closets. But when things are bad used items are more expensive because sellers are depending on them monetarily. I sell things online, and I've had to raise my prices because I lost my job. I know others who have had to do the same.

EnHalvSnes@reddit
Oh. So this is lots of stuff on eBay costs much more now.
RamonaLittle@reddit
And yet on the eBay subs, there are daily complaints from sellers that their sales are down (although I'm sure this varies by category). And it doesn't help that eBay has been having as-yet-unexplained technical problems for the past few days.
Plus postage rates just went up by 8% for Ground Advantage and Priority mail. That will negatively affect eBay and its users.
roadtrip-ne@reddit
Postage rates are insane to what they used to be. Between postage & eBay fees it’s barely worth it to sell some stuff
Only-Worldliness2006@reddit
I think it a double-edge sword situation for sellers. In a declining market, more people might be buying on ebay but there are also more people selling "to get extra money" type of thing.
SquirrelyMcNutz@reddit
Maybe postage rates wouldn't go up if that stupid fucking Pump Up The Volume USPS commercial was playing every other commercial break on a bunch of channels?
jujutsu-die-sen@reddit
Would a change in the ratio of sellers to buyers cause that?
RamonaLittle@reddit
Well, a lot of things are happening at once, and the math is beyond my capabilities, honestly.
One elephant in the room is that many potential buyers have died. The latest flu surge was the worst in decades, and killed ~23,000 people in the United States. People are still dying from covid and other diseases too, and many more have become sick and/or disabled (which means medical bills and decreased earnings). After someone dies, what do their family members do with all their stuff? A lot probably gets listed on eBay. So supply is going up while demand goes down.

Drycabin1@reddit
But I also believe many people are more into thrifting and resale than ever for all sorts of reasons, not just lack of/less funds.
You may be conscious of the ecological disaster fast fashion has created and just online sales of clothing in general where people buy ten things in three sizes each and return all but a couple items. Amazingly, those returns are just dumped in a landfill because they are so cheap it isn’t worth the labor to sort through them!
It is also hard to find a company you feel comfortable buying from anymore, whether because the company is just flat out evil to its employees, suppliers, and the environment or is connected to Epstein through one of its owners or high ups or some other horrid reason.

missbwith2boys@reddit
I don’t disagree with your premise.
I think it’s good that folks are trying to grow some of their own food. I’ve often thought it a shame that we didn’t continue to encourage home food gardens as a society post WW2, because that knowledge and those skills are tough to obtain once they are gone.
Some folks will realize that it’s really hard to grow much in their one raised bed that they’ve invested in this year. They’ll realize how important local farmers are and how fragile it is to rely on home gardening for their calories. Maybe they’ll find their green thumb and will expand their garden next year, giving them a chance to be less reliant on factory foods.
I don’t want folks to fail, rather, I’m hoping that new skills will be found through community. I’m always happy to chat with neighbors and friends about how to grow whatever they’re trying to grow. Those connections could make stronger communities ultimately.

Everywhere is wanting a chunk of flesh for everything. Work wants to work you to the bone (hoping you quit?) so the inevitable doesn’t have to be random layoffs, anywhere is painful, where they used to throw in extra little bits you either have to pay (like pizza cheese/peppers or soy sauce packets) or they just stopped bringing those in. Everything is tightening up and nothings carefree. Its feeling more like musical chairs nearing the end.

I had 2024 stickers all last year & never got pulled over. The only time they pull you over is if they’re already looking for a reason to do so.

Does NC still do the weird property tax with your license plate renewal thing? I was military in NC in the 90's, bought a vehicle there and was shocked when I got the first plate renewal with some insanely high vehicle tax thing added in. I immediately phoned home to get the POA paperwork to switch my registration to my home state, but I can see people not renewing now if that's the standard process - it was well over $500 then.

Yes, indeed. You pay taxes on every vehicle you own when you renew your plates.

For me, the things I am noticing the most are:
Declining gym attendance. I work out 7x a week… and the gym is about 1/2 as full as it was a few months ago. People aren’t spending for all the bougie shit like they used to. There are also significantly less trainers employed by the gym.
Alternatively, and alarmingly, the amount of empty commercial real estate complexes I am seeing all over the place. I am not talking like 1 or 2 vacant units in a building; I am talking entire strip malls that don’t have a single tenant.
Empty “middle of the road” restaurants. The high-priced places are always booming, but the old school joints (Chilis, Applebees, Red Robin, etc) are always empty. This is what we used to hoping refer to as ”boomer stops” because those were the only people who ate there; even the boomers aren’t going out to eat anymore.

This is actually a really good one. Of all “optional” items instruments hold their value pretty well usually. Another might be more high quality instruments being listed cheaper. Beginner level instruments are sold all the time by people who either leveled up or gave up. If more dedicated folks are selling their good stuff, that’s a bad sign.

Okay, this is an “out there” indicator, but I walk for exercise. As I’m old, I’ve been doing it for decades. To not get bored, I collect pop and beer cans for charity money. Prior-Win-4729@reddit
In Oregon during the 2008 crash, people were riding bikes or towing shopping carts and rummaging through bins on recycle day to get cans and bottles for deposit. I almost never had any cans left for the recycling to pick up. That is some dirty, heavy work for very little money at the end of the day.

We have eight cats. That's 8 aluminium cans of cat food per day. I spaced looking at the fact we can get back cash for the cans, especially because aluminum shortage.
Thanks for the reminder! I'm gonna start separating those out now!
jednaz@reddit
I have been doing the same for about twenty years. I always picked up cans while walking, in parking lots if I see flattened ones on the way to my car, and at construction sites as we got to a lot of those due to our businesses and I got in the habit of bringing trash bags to clean up the site. It is easy petty cash and as my daughter got older (she is in college now) would give the cash to her for her incidental needs. She now takes the cans to the recycle place (an education in humanity in and of itself). It has been less cans lately for sure, even at our job sites I am not getting as many. It has me wondering if other people are picking them up.

Pretty much complete hiring freeze since last year. Maintenance windows are tight, problems that aren't urgent don't get addressed, and lately enormous corporate purges and labor cutbacks. Managers that are personable and 'real' becoming sparse, while ones that speak the lingo and talk savings and profitability become more common.
Feels like everything is running on, or close to being on fumes, and that's working at a site with a warehouse a mile long. I can only imagine how small businesses are holding up right now. Another note is that a friend of mine who works at a dealership service department has noticed that work has been unusually slow. Right about a month ago is when things would pick up, and they haven't. It feels universally shit right now. Just turned 21, too! Fuckin' awesome time to be alive.

My Aldi was the most empty I’ve ever seen it, especially produce (tomatoes, yellow onions sparse and sprouting, no strawberries). The store was busy and most people were buying dried goods and dairy. I watched multiple people go up to buy ground beef, stared at it for a good minute, and put it back, I’m sure due to the high price. And an older gentleman in front of me bought three small things for dinner, totaling $9 and his card didn’t go through saying insufficient funds (probably SNAP). I bought his things and he was grateful but seemed embarrassed. No one should be. We’re all suffering somehow and the only way we can get through this is being prepared as well as we can and caring for our neighbors/community.

Walmart near me used to carry two kinds of dried beans and the usual small bags of rice, nothing over five pounds. Now the two shelves have expanded to half an aisle. There are three choices for 20 pound bags of rice. Its the first time I have seen a 20 pound of pinto beans in that store. There are now ten kinds of dried beans.

Cucoloris@reddit
No.
tanstaafl18@reddit
Interesting. I just ask because I noticed a while back when I was doing food prep that the Walmart in the area with the higher Hispanic population had the 20 lb bags of rice and beans, but the other Walmart only had 1 and 5 lb bags
Cucoloris@reddit
that is interesting. We have almost no hispanic population here. Which is why I think it's a bad sign.

The amount of high end collector's editions & rare items that have been traded in over the last few months has been wild. Tons of Criterion stuff, imported Arrow blu-rays, steel books, old pristine copies of Silent Hill & Final Fantasy games for PS1 & PS2. That tells me that people are hurting & desperate for money if they're unloading that type of stuff at a resale shop, especially when they could've gotten more by listing it online.

Dealerships can do in house financing sometimes and they also have banks they work with that give a kick back
woahwoahwoah28@reddit
Most (probably all) of the major brands have their own financing arm. It's not the dealership specifically.
But for example, we have purchased cars through Toyota and Honda and used Toyota Financial Services and Honda Financial Services to finance it.
I'm guessing the dealership probably gets a kickback from corporate because they're the conduit for the transaction.
You also can finance through a bank or credit union, but they will often have lower APR at the dealership.

I've been noticing kids out unsupervised a lot more. It started last summer, and this spring is already higher than it was last summer. I live in a college city in the midwest, so summer childcare has historically had some level of affordability since a lot of the students in school to be teachers will run small group daycamps "off the books". Those seem to be disappearing though since the students need actual jobs to afford rent and the parents can't afford it.

My partner works at Target and they are cutting hours by a lot. People who work 20 hours normally were told to expect between 8-12 moving forward in May through the end of the year. Full time hours will be for management only and they will only be staffing the Starbucks with 2 people no matter the shift. I haven’t got Starbucks for ages but that place is always slammed at our Target so good luck to those workers. They already look miserable with 4 people there I can’t imagine only having 2. Sales are down in every department across the board. People aren’t spending as much money when they come in.

I’ve disaster prepped for decades successfully, just did an inventory, and am planting a good garden this year, and plugging any holes in my planning. This is going to get worse, make sure you have canned goods at the least, and long term freeze dried carrots, onions, etc., lots of sauces in glass jars (get the low sodium for everything that you can), canned meat and EVERY TIME you go to the big box or Aldi’s, grab a couple of 24-40 packs of water. It’s 4.00 now, that’s gonna go up. Go through your house and cut back. Turn off the lights, unplug non essential stuff, Insulate everywhere, cut back everywhere and if you can bulk buy with family, DO it. $7.00 for a bag of regular chips that’s mostly air? That happened this weekend. Think before you buy, cut back now so you don’t have to do it later. Concentrate on Food, Water, shoring up your house and get good clothes. mwpdx86@reddit
That seems like it could be a good thing tbh. When there are no campers/RVs for sale is when I'd start to worry.
happilyunstable@reddit
People struggling with money are ditching payments on luxuries first, and they’re probably upside down because the resale on campers and RVs is always terrible. The more saturated the used market becomes the more of a soaking they take.
auntie_@reddit
Not speaking for mwpdx86 but I think they meant that when there are no RVs for sale it’s because people can’t afford housing anymore and have to move into campers/rvs.
mwpdx86@reddit
Yeah that was basically my thought.
happilyunstable@reddit
Yea, I wondered that as well, but I’m not sure that’s a recession indicator rather than everything-has-fully-gone-to-hell indicator. I think at that point people have been forced into the cheapest camper/RV they can find/steal and the banks are liquidating repossessed units. If the banks can find them and take them, I guess.
ComplexGuava@reddit
This is very obvious I can't sell my RV anywhere. It's priced well below other listings, and a discount what I paid 18 months ago, no interest whatsoever. Whereas when I last sold 3 an RV 3 years ago, we sold in a matter of days for over asking price.

at this point what isn't? But seen personally, a lot of anime and comic conventions in my area are shutting down or were way smaller. Some of them were mismanagement or drama that's expected, but others just didn't make any money and couldn't keep the shows going this year or moved to more profitable cities. I think the convention and fandom space is going to shrink dramatically as the midlevel and smaller niche cons close up shop due to low attendance and people not having spending money for the vendors.

Very anecdotal but I work evenings at a higher end restaurant. Not only has business been down compared to this time last year (obviously), a new trend has emerged over the past two months where people are now constantly calling the day after their meal trying to dispute receipts and get refunds, saying they do not understand what they were charged for because some of the menu items are in Italian.
