Am I doing a downgrade?

I’ve a powerfull PC with Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Nvidia 5070 Ti 16GB, but, Id like it to work as close to a console as possible with BazziteOS and nvidia has some issues that I’ve experienced. I really like the sleep mode of my steamdeck and I want to replicate it.
Ive decided to return my nvidia and go for a 9070XT (also saving 150$), but, Im afraid of missing performance because everyone says 5070 runa better with RTX and that stuff.
Im not that tweaky in therms of graphics, I prefer to focus on 4K with upscaling and high fps…
Am I downgrading that much switching from DLSS to FSR…?
Canadian_Border_Czar@reddit
I was fighting this battle when I bought my 5070 Ti last year.
I have zero regrets, the 5070 Ti is a beast. That said, IIRC the performance was comparable in all areas EXCEPT raytracing.
So the question really is, do you intend to use Raytracing?
MITBryceYoung@reddit
I could be wrong but im pretty sure 9070xt has caught up in rt. It was pt that it cant attempt or gets destroyed atm
beirch@reddit
The 5070 Ti is ~15-20% faster at ray tracing. This difference means the 5070 Ti is ~5% faster on average over a large enough sample size.
The reason being that in most comparisons the number of RT titles is just a handful, so the advantage it has shrinks, as their raster performance is near identical.
In PT it's ~50-200% faster, depending on the game and settings/resolution. The 9070 XT crumbles in Indiana Jones for example with certain settings.
Saying that as a 9070 XT owner btw; I know its limitations.
KirenSensei@reddit
As somebody with a 5070ti. In raw performance I don't see the 9070XT as a downgrade. It's definitely a slight downgrade in ray tracing and maybe some features like dlss. But overall if you want pure raster it's not a downgrade imo.
AlternativeCorner17@reddit (OP)
I dont know… maybe bazzite with nvidia will be as stable as AMD in the future. Maybe keeping the nvidia is better choice
beirch@reddit
Bro we can tell you already made a decision, just keep the 5070 Ti.
Orallover1960@reddit
But you are saying it yourself. MAYBE bazzite will be good with Nvidia in the future. MAYBE you'll be able to find some workarounds for Nvidia. Do you want something that MIGHT work in the future or something that WORKS NOW? The 9070 xt is about even with the 5070 ti but works with bazzite RIGHT NOW.
AnimeProfilePic@reddit
the downgrade is in every now and then gpu related bugs and no dlss 4/4.5 and no cuda. if you ignore all of these and focus on raster then the 9070xt is decent enough
Shaunbrah@reddit
xt has slighty better raster performance on the benchmark i use and fsr4 is pretty good .
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
No. 5070ti and 9070xt trade blows. If you don’t need cuda for anything its a better option especially for your use case
RememberTooSmile@reddit
Agreed the main difference is Cuda and general support for Nvidia in that sphere of gpu usage
If you’re just gaming, not a downgrade but if this doubles as a workstation IMO stick with Nvidia because most software seems to still be Nvidia first everybody else last lol
Octaive@reddit
Come on, it's a downgrade. What is this copium. It's not a big downgrade but it's a downgrade, especially with dlss4.5 at 4K.
AlternativeCorner17@reddit (OP)
Do you think bazzite with nvidia will be as stable as AMD in the future?
Maybe keeping the nvidia is better choice
RememberTooSmile@reddit
Will it improve? Yes probably, but they’ll never be equal as long as AMD continues to be open source and Nvidia proprietary.
For your use case if it’s strictly gaming, AMD is probably best. It’s a strong card that works well in your OS, but if you look at workstation data such as Blender you’ll see Nvidia is miles ahead.
But if you’re just gaming, and want a strong card for generally good graphics and gps AMD is the way imo, especially if it saves $150

tornadozx2@reddit
Doesn't cuda now run on amd with native performance thanks to ZLUDA and similar projects?
Awfulfange@reddit
The 9070xt is just fine. The raw performance difference will be negligible.
It's the other "nvidia features" that are the downgrade. Dlss is better than fsr. Any program/software from nvidia is better. Also, nvidia has a long history of providing greater support to older hardware.
But, with regards to the actual hardware and performance, they are roughly equal at the moment. But who's to say what will happen in a few years. My old 6900xt used to compete with the rtx 3090. Now it competes with the 3080 in newer titles.
AlternativeCorner17@reddit (OP)
Maybe bazzite with nvidia will be as stable as AMD in the future. I hope it will. If thats the case, I would Keep mi nvidia for sure
Awfulfange@reddit
How bad is the experience with nvidia? Everywhere I've read, there aren't a whole lot of issues with nvidia and bazzite.
In my opinion, if an OS requires you to have certain hardware or lose out on support, then that's not the OS for me.
Considering bazzite is for gaming and Nvidia is 90%+ of the dedicated gpu market, bazzite had to support them to survive. Maybe spend some time researching some fixes. It might be worth it in the long run.
trouttwade@reddit
I agree with this guy. Look into fixes. My first move in your case would be running DDU since you’re having problems with Nvidia.
TheGamerX20@reddit
Will it be a downgrade? Depends on if you care about Path Tracing / Ray Tracing.. for Ray Tracing it is around a 15-20% performance reduction, not sure about Path Tracing but Nvidia is way better supported for PT.
But Raw Performance is nearly the same, and FSR4 is pretty good still, and you will get way better Linux support on AMD, Nvidia is getting better, but still a closed firmware unfortunately.
Orallover1960@reddit
Path tracing may be better on AMD but the truth is it doesn't really work on either platform.
MITBryceYoung@reddit
Path tracing is fine for nvidia, people just dont want to use dlss to support it or FG.
I can run cyberpunk with no fg and like 70-80 fps on Dlss balanced with Path tracing + ultra with no fg. Thats pretty good.
I can run at 4k 60 fps flat for path tracing on a 5070 ti and 67 fps for a 5080 at 4k.
Saying it doesnt work is naive. Its tougher on older cards but pretty manageable with dlss and a mid tier+ card.
ChronoZaga@reddit
Yes. AMD and Linux are trending right now. No hate, but there are a lot of fanboys in the comments. Many of whom don’t actually do more than post. Not PC gamers.
If you already have an Nvidia 5070 Ti 16GB, why pay more out of pocket for an equivalent card from another vendor? That’s trading money for zero gain.
Also, again, no hate. I love Linux! But you’re going to have a more consistent gaming experience with Windows. 5-10% FPS across the board.
Don’t follow trends. Chase FPS.
MITBryceYoung@reddit
Hes having a specific problem for his use case which amd should be better for. And he would save money.
ChronoZaga@reddit
FPS > Sleep mode. You can boot from off to working game-ready windows in less than 30 seconds.
If you want an AMD based machine that runs a Unix-like OS, for the sake of ease of use and saving money, go buy a PS5
MITBryceYoung@reddit
Uuh ok sure.
mittelhau@reddit
Not worth switching, dx12 fix is already out for proton, now need to wait for vulkan which should be soon.
Do you have any other problems?
mattricide@reddit
You wasted money by going 9800 instead of 7800
AlternativeCorner17@reddit (OP)
That wasnt the question
Orallover1960@reddit
Plus it's not true. I have a 9800 x3d and a 9070 xt and am killing it in 1440p at max settings.
Errettfitchett03@reddit
Don't change gpu. Nvidia drivers are getting better every month, just wait
finisimo13@reddit
Why not use steam big picture mode on boot or Xbox fullscreen experience? You wouldn't be losing the benefit of having an nvidia card
AlternativeCorner17@reddit (OP)
I want plug and play experience. Is the new XBOX mode worth it?
finisimo13@reddit
I have a 5080 and i changed my playstyle since November last year to play my pc at the couch.
You can look at tutorials on YouTube on how to enable it that also leads you to downloading a file from git hub and copying and pasting a line on CMD
The experience is really nice, it straight up presents your game library when booting your pc. Its very console like. even non presents Xbox or steam games in your library. You can choose to open different game launchers like steam and open its big picture mode within Xbox and just chill there instead.
I have to say to use a Xbox controller if you havent already because im using my ps5 controller and there is input issues but enough to pick and choose your games at least
AdstaOCE@reddit
The 9070XT has the same performance, and a cheaper price. The only things you're missing out on are CUDA which can make a big difference in some workstation applications, DLSS being in more games than FSR, slightly better FG, a few % RT performance, and a big path tracing performance reduction.
AlternativeCorner17@reddit (OP)
Hope nvidia will be as stable as AMD with bazzite in the future
TyRawr64@reddit
You're not really leaving any performance difference, only thing you'll be missing is dlss is better than fsr4 and nvidia has better frame gen plus multi frame gen. Not really a downgrade just a different feature set
