Watching The Price Is Right with my sick daughter rn

Daughter wasn't feeling well at all today, so I let her stay home from school. She asked if we could watch TPiR because I would always tell her that's what we would do when we were younger.
She was confused that we had to wait until 9 am to start watching it, and was complaining about all the ads by the third commercial break
zsrh@reddit
I used to watch the Price is Right with my grandfather whenever he was visiting and it was summer break. We would always bid on the items to see who was closest.

I refuse to pay extra for streaming services to get rid of the ads.
I joke about how much less annoying it is now that I can pick up my phone and distract myself from the ads. I lived through cable. The ads don’t bother me. lol
avalonfaith@reddit
I'm the same. I actually prefer them. I'm not diagnosed adhd or anything but the little breaks are much needed for my weird brainsticles. I can look at something else, get up and do stuff, come Back and rewind. Everyone says "Ava, you can pause!". To that I say," no I can't! It's not the same. I need it to be forced upon me.".
username__0000@reddit
I am diagnosed (only in the last couple years) ADHD and it’s so funny to notice the random things that I thought were my personality but are actually symptoms.
I frequently wonder off during commercials, forget I was watching something and then have to rewind when I return and remember. lol
avalonfaith@reddit
I feel you! My one of my closest 25 yr long relationship friends that I've lived with for many years of that duration, last night, was like, "girl, get that ADD under control". I'm like shoot, if I'm hearing that from multiple sources in the course of some days, maybe it's a thing? Throw it on the freaking pile.

There was a post in a science subreddit about how perimonpause (spelling??) and how it messes with adhd and a lot of our masking and coping mechanisms (that many of us didn’t realize were either because we were undiagnosed) stop working.
It’s been an odd journey realizing how much it affected my life and how crazy it was that I was not flagged, just called “weird”.
avalonfaith@reddit
That is very interesting. Thanks! I'll surely ask about it. Not convinced but I am definitely a weird girl. Haha.
brianonthescene@reddit
I pay for YouTube Premium so I can have no ads while watching old recorded media like game shows or Saturday morning cartoons with the ads included. 😅
optimaloutcome@reddit
Waiting until a certain time for the show to start is something these kids don't get. I remember we went to a hotel once about 11 years ago and my then-4-year-old says "Dad, put on Dora!" and I had to explain "babe, we're not at home we can't just put on any show we want whenever we want" and she looked at me like I had two heads.
DCpurpleTart33@reddit
Literally the Price is Right and Days of our Lives are the things I looked forward to watching when I was home sick! I STILL DO!!!!
Cardiff-Giant11@reddit
kids these days will never know the emotional roller coaster that is Hole in One……or TWO.
strippersandcocaine@reddit
Or the unbridled excitement of getting Plinko
Leading-Summer-4724@reddit
Oh man Plinko was the best!
brakeb@reddit
plinko is garbage... I used to enjoy it, until I realized that no one wins big money on it... I'd rather go for a car or bigger prizes.
Leading-Summer-4724@reddit
🤷♀️As a kid I wasn’t interested in the prizes themselves, just the fun of the game. Plinko was fun to watch as a kid, just like the yodel game.
Dannydimes@reddit
I’m a Cliffhanger guy through and through.
ErnieBochII@reddit
Underrated funny performance by Lithgow
Dannydimes@reddit
If you want underrated Lithgow, I’m a Ricochet guy….
Outrageous_Low6506@reddit
Or the Yodeler game, forget what it's called right now....sorry!
Turbulent_Tale6497@reddit
Cliff Hanger... hanging from a cliff! That's why he's called Cliff Hanger....
compulov@reddit
Cliff Hangers
Outrageous_Low6506@reddit
That's it, thank you!
joshhupp@reddit
God I lived for that game to be played all the time
yourlittlebirdie@reddit
I saw a giant Plinko game at Costco a few years ago and remain regretful that I didn’t buy it.
whamburglar@reddit
Plinko was the best damn game they had on the show.
CypressRootsMe@reddit
I was also very tempted to buy it
Unapologetic_Canuck@reddit
It’s not the same anymore. I haven’t watched an episode in years, stopped not long after Bob Barker retired. Was saddened when he passed.
Blackbird136@reddit
9am?! It’s on at 11 here. On my sick days as a kid I know I wasn’t up by 9!
Spartan04@reddit
Same here. Could be the mountain time zone.

Ding ding ding! A copper for the MSU grad of '04.
If I placed your username correctly, I may have seen you on campus in the early 2000's
EmmalouEsq@reddit
Pluto has the Bob Barker episodes which are fun to watch just for the cheap prices and hair/clothes styles.
takisara@reddit
I'm so tired of my daughter saying 'i don't have anything to watch' because she binged an entire series....I'm going to cancel all the streaming services and bring cable back and then she can watch what is on and like it...like the old ' you get what you get and don't get upset'
EmmalouEsq@reddit
Not even cable. Free apps and an antenna. When we were kids we had rabbit ears with tin foil, which was the style at the time.
absentlyric@reddit
Come on...don't be that cruel.....at least get her a VCR so she can set it to record on a schedule lol.
takisara@reddit
I can only imagine the horror she would have if I brought out my old VCR and VHS tapes...
therealpopkiller@reddit
I loved The Price Is Right so much as a kid and always wanted to be on it and finally fulfilled that dream about four years ago. Made it all the way to the Showcase Showdown and lost. All that I came home with is a pair of patio heaters. I don’t even have a patio.
catjuggler@reddit
Holy crap, you’re living the dream. My goal is only to even be in an audience!
therealpopkiller@reddit
If you ever do, they interview you as you come in to see who they want to pick from the audience. be super super super upbeat, smiling, lively, enthusiastic… that’s what they’re trying to put on TV
Blackbird136@reddit
How was the experience? I went to a taping but didn’t get picked. 😭
I was on Wheel of Fortune a few years ago though. Didn’t win the day but banked (and took) a trip to Europe!
therealpopkiller@reddit
It was a lot of fun but moves by very quickly. They build in extra time during the bidding process in the TV edit. When you see people thinking and scanning the audience about how much to bid, it’s actually about half that much time. It’s really hard to think that fast.
I got incredibly lucky and won the wheel spin (can’t remember the name of this segment) with .50 AND I was first. The wheel is extremely heavy - it’s made of wood and has what are essentially pool ladder rungs as handholds.
Drew was awesome and very friendly. They told me to exit right if I lost the showcase, which I did, and didn’t hear Drew trying to shake my hand and say nice to meet you, etc. So it looked like I snubbed him on national TV 🤦🏻♂️
It was an extremely hot October day outside the studio and about 65° inside, so my body was having trouble regulating temperature. I felt very sweaty.
I got my heaters the day of or after the episode aired, they were delivered to my home. I think the “actual retail price” was $1100. When I got them I looked them up on Amazon to see what I could sell them for. $325 each. I sold them for a total of $500 on Offer Up.
Blackbird136@reddit
Still though…$500 for the experience and bragging rights forever! Worth it.
therealpopkiller@reddit
Also that’s awesome, congrats!
MissMushroomBerry@reddit
OMG so jealous! 😃👏🏼
therealpopkiller@reddit
It’s a cool experience for sure! It’s funny, I lived literally across the street from the studio for 8 years, but it wasn’t until I moved 20 min away that I actually went to a taping
username__0000@reddit
The boats always cracked me up.
The amount of people who could make use of a boat is so low. lol
braxtel@reddit
Now I just have to win a truck big enough to tow that bitch
Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit
👏👏👏
yourlittlebirdie@reddit
The bragging rights you came home with are worth far more than the patio heaters.
gyrlonfilm6@reddit
This show was on my bucket list when Bob was alive. I stopped watching when he died.
catjuggler@reddit
One of the best ever episodes is in Drew’s era though- when he cohosts with Snoop
SBMoo24@reddit
I need to find that episode!
catjuggler@reddit
The whole thing used to be on YouTube but there’s just clips left, like- https://youtu.be/eSCPJGn2JLc?si=eQEsb2tHNMyZmC4d
compulov@reddit
Commercial breaks are longer than they used to be. 1 hour shows used to be \~45 minutes but now they're 40 minutes (or less). So there's that. If you can view Pluto TV, I think, they have a couple of TPIR channels.. one with the more recently Drew Carey years and one with older Bob Barker years. My wife and I watch the Bob Barker years sometimes and have discovered we've forgotten how much stuff cost back then.
Gian_Luck_Pickerd@reddit
A while back I watched a lot of the Barker shows from around '83. Oh my God! Besides the prices of stuff back then, some of the stuff he would say to the models and some of the female contestants on air. I was like I can definitely see where the lawsuits in the 90s were coming from.
I should say I totally believed the allegations back then, but watching old episodes now with hindsight... yeah...
cybah@reddit
I watch the Roku TPIR The Barker Era channel often. Its so bad how bad he was. Lots of unnecessary touching and comments. The 100 dollar pocket is what gets me.. lets women dive right in, but a man. forget about it. Even a guy once commented about the sexism with that pocket.
And in some episodes it was clear he was boinking Diane. They just gave each other so many looks that it was hard to miss.
Related.. what scares me about watching some of these 1980s episodes is I am getting those 1983 prices correct! Either I'm old or prices for the most part have remained the same on many products. It was also noticeable when the 1983 recession hit and inflation went up. All the prices went up.
absentlyric@reddit
Yeah, there's actually a few Youtube docs that point that out, how commercials kept becoming longer and longer and TV times got shorter. They showed how Big Bang Theory was notorious for it shrinking to 18 minutes per episode.
Redbird9346@reddit
A common complaint about the current TBBT-universe show, Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage, is that the episodes are too short.
I agree, but there's really nothing I can do about it.
everybodys_lost@reddit
I love watching old game shows but yeah - certain things were WAY more... dining set? $6500! set of lamps? $500! granted these are all really good quality - whereas we can buy a dining set for $1000 but it'll scratch and warp if you put anything on it...
DocWednesday@reddit
I learned how to write a check by watching The Price is Right. Checks would probably blow a lot of minds these days.
I find the Drew Carey era is just…lame. Some of the games are like…is this prize worth this amount of money or that amount of money of money? And what’s up with people bidding one dollar LOWER than the last bid?
Redbird9346@reddit
I'm more surprised by that more people who bid $1 when they are not last to bid are not immediately outbid by someone who bids $2.
Watergirl626@reddit
We pirated cable and there was a station that played a ton of game shows. We spent sick days eating grilled cheese and yelling No Whammies!
catjuggler@reddit
Game show network- I loved it. I’m convinced that’s why I’m good at math
Long_Advertising_737@reddit
I was a plinko kid
FethB@reddit
I love it, The Price Is Right was a staple of my sick days (along with trashy talk shows) during middle and high school!
Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit
and then happy gilmore
59apache01@reddit
I was more of a Let's Make a Deal fan, but The Price is Right had its moments. Especially when Bob Barker was hosting.
takisara@reddit
I used to giggle when the door was opened and it was a goat...oh simpler times!
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I really thought my own kids would like the Price is Right, but at least they like Press Your Luck.
