Any tips on instrument training , it is whooping my butt right now

great advice by everyone. one thing that’s not mentioned by anyone and I noticed in my IR is that you actually have to stay ahead of the aircraft and anticipate everything! so do some chair flying, get it on your motor memory. then once u go flying start prepping early and stay ahead of the aircraft the whole time! good luck!!

what specifically?

Holding procedures and keeping my altitude , either i am briefing the approach plate or inputting the gps, i look away for a couple seconds and all of a sudden my heading and altitude is off regardless of trying to trim it perfectly

I’m right there with you. Except it’s the heading for me. One thing I know I’m doing wrong and working on is not breaking my scan for more than a second or two. I worked hard on it on the last flight and it helped a lot.
Before I was looking down at my approach plate or fiddling with the GPS for like 5-10 seconds at a time 💀

On top of what everyone else said, You don’t need to do the whole briefing at once. Read the expiration, check instruments, read the final approach course, check instruments, read and set the frequencies, check the instruments.

Trim properly.
Weight of your arm supported by armrest.
Don’t tightly grip the yoke.

Practice briefing plates on the ground, too. It may just be taking you too long to read them in the air.

The best thing my instructor said ‘ it’s a procedural course, learn the procedures, off by heart for each phase of flight and it’ll be easier’
There is a procedure to fly every section for your IR, eg. TO, rotate at x pitch for x and climb out VY ? Or other specified speed - then maintain the exact parameter you nominated and take nothing less. TOC, ok TOC checks done, I’m now en route. What’s my en route procedure etc etc. you get to idea. Build that mental picture on the ground and run through an entire flight on your sofa not skipping a single detail, even the pre flight checks etc etc.
As someone nearing the end of IR it will get easier but be methodical and it should come faster and have patience !
