Many of my colleagues are young Z’ers (I’m in healthcare) and I honest to God thought they were all just tired when they kept saying they were crashing out. I mean, we work 12.5 hr night shifts, I too am exhausted! I was worried I’d missed a number of mental health crises when I learned the actual meaning. Sorry, young colleagues!
Z slang is actually where I struggle, but as a parent of two alphas I'm getting my revenge in the group chat by constantly dropping alpha slang on those Zoomers.
Yeah I think that plays into it too. Birth rates fell pretty darn sharply throughout the 70s and then climbed back up in the 1980s. I assume that wider access to the Pill and reproductive rights was part of the decline. And even though that was all in place by the 1980s, Boomers were hitting their peak baby-having years then and the sheer size of their population is why the Millennial generation is as large as it is. That’s why Millennials are sometimes referred to as Echo Boomers.
I wonder how sibling groups fall across the range?
Because for me (78) my siblings are 81 and 84 so we go right across the micro-gen which I'm guessing influences how/what we experienced. Like my little bro experienced things because of me and I experienced other things because of him making us all "solidly" xennial. If that makes any sense?
My siblings are all over the fucking place. Got a (long dead) Boomer ('58), a Jones ('63), an X ('69), my "Junior X" self ('75), a very probable fourth brother who's a Xennial ('81) and the lone sister is a "Core Millennial" ('89).
The brothers and I share the same father who's a Late Silent ('40). My sister and I, the same mother; a '55 edition Boomer.
I'm 1976 :) I'm in the Gen x subreddit group too but I also had early computer access and skew a little more millennial, I find this group more relatable
Broad cultural and specific familial influences existing around the edge years would have caused other people born in those years to identify more closely with Gen X or Millenials.
Right? I weigh the same amount I did in college but somehow the awesome college jeans I found a few months ago (that are back in style) don't fit. Wtf?
Some of us 77s have more in common with you 82s than with the 75s.
A lot of it has to do with access to things growing up. If by financial capacity or always hanging out with younger cousins who were more like siblings.
I second this. My friends were all my age or younger like my siblings and their friends who are also xennials but on the millennial side. That's who I was surrounded by.
My fiance who is the same age as me but identifies squarely as gen x. He grew up and was influenced by his older brother and cousins. His nostalgia lies in the 80s and 80s culture. My best years were the 90s and early 00s. We have the same experiences growing up but often times different outlooks due to those influences.
I'm 81, but my older brother is 79, so I had a lot of influence from "older" generations while growing up. Including the 75s-79s who were always the "cooler older dudes" that always were doing cool shit, listening to cool music and wearing cool stuff... shit even my bro looked up to them. (Oh yeah, and they had the Playboy magz)
"Xennial" overlaps the late Gen X and early Millennial years, and this is the Xennial sub. I don't think anyone who graduated in the late 90s is claiming to be a Millennial, to be fair.
It's interesting, my sister and my wife are both 1978 and I think they both lean gen X, while my younger 1983/1984 born cousins definitely lean millennial..
Let me do some gatekeeping and say 81 & 82 are the true xennials! 🤣
Me and my hubby both have a younger siblings, so we feel more millenial than gen x. He's two months older, but i finished school half a year earlier than he did, because of the magic of hemispheres.
I muted the millennial sub for being too depressing. I get it. I also was not gainfully employed until my mid-30s. I'd prefer not to be reminded of that every time I look at Reddit.
I just wanna talk about which ninja turtles theme song is the best.
I'm actually pretty solidly Gen X but most of my friends are later GX or millennials and I was always into the latest tech growing up, so I relate much more to Xennial stuff than older GX folks born in the late '60s.
That's it! We're all forgetting how technology works! Next think you know we'll be trying to figure out how to install the nextdoor app, doomscrolling to AI slop on TikTok, and screaming in all caps on Facebook about something inconsequential.
Same, and since it showed zero votes, I just sort of assumed that it was typical of our people to not answer personal questions and uniformly decide not to vote 🤣
The curve makes sense. I'm 85 but I do not understand most millennials, and my friends tend to be mud-late 70s babies. I was raised feral in the boonies of the Hawaiian jungle by divorced hippy parents who had kids later than their peers. We didn't have streetlights or porchlights, you just better come home at the right time or mom will u alive you!
I have to think my parents were pretty progressive and figured me to be mature pretty early as they shared all the media and culture talked about here from as early as I remember.
Hell my dad was a computer engineer so I was helping him build and work on computers by 93 and I think I was on the internet by 95. So I probably taught myself a lot about the 90s with that access as well. It was a wonderful time.
Wow, I actually fall in the middle of an age demographic for once? I bet growing up like that would've been a lot better if I actually had kids my age to play with instead of being the youngest/oldest in a group.
It would be weird for it to be "evenly" (uniformly) distributed, because it would imply generations are more about birth year than shared experiences, which is opposite the point of this sub.
82-84 here and I related exactly to the Xennial experience. Basically I was elementary school until 94, middle school to 97 so many if my early cultural memories were that late 80s/early 90s
Rhapsodyingloom@reddit
As an 83, I’m offended being grouped in a micro-micro generation with 84 but thankful to not be associated with 86. 😎

acommentator@reddit
But why? At baseline I'd guess a uniform distribution across the 2 year buckets.
Is awareness of Xennial less common at the edges? Are there fewer people born in 77-78 and 83-84? Are fewer of these groups on Reddit for some reason?
UnicornOnTheJayneCob@reddit
1978 is the lowest birth rate year since before WW2. There just aren’t that many people for 1978 in general.
rialucia@reddit
Yeah I think that plays into it too. Birth rates fell pretty darn sharply throughout the 70s and then climbed back up in the 1980s. I assume that wider access to the Pill and reproductive rights was part of the decline. And even though that was all in place by the 1980s, Boomers were hitting their peak baby-having years then and the sheer size of their population is why the Millennial generation is as large as it is. The brothers and I share the same father who's a Late Silent ('40). My sister and I, the same mother; a '55 edition Boomer.
der_innkeeper@reddit
Because as you head out to the extremes, the baseline generations have a "stronger" pull away from the term.
Older folks will skew Gen X. Younger folks will skew Millennial.
Leaving the proper Xennials as the greatest value right in the center.
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
'75 baby. Full-on Xer, but probably spend equal time here and on the GenX Subreddit.
As you said, it makes the most sense for the center of the curve to be the center of the microgen. Maff werks n' shit.
