Damn, Windows gets especially killed in CPU-bound tests. What's the reasoning? Better scheduler? Less bloat and overhead from NT kernel? No windows defender (seriously impacts code compilation)? The lack of embedded advertisements and excess telemetry everywhere?
TraceyRobn@reddit
My guess from seeing the code for the Windows 2000 kernel: The Windows NT kernel is full of code modules that no one at Microsoft understands anymore, but is too afraid to touch. So if a new function is required, a new module is made, the older code is left as-is. This slows things down as any OS API function goes through multiple layers of APIs.
The NT kernel was originally a better design than the Linux kernel. The NT (VMS) designers have long since retired.
amb9800@reddit
Dave Cutler is still at MS.
symmetry81@reddit
They studied the scheduler.

Windows most commonly used file system is just outdated trash at this point as well once you start hitting a lot of little files it tanks.
5477@reddit
In addition to these, better compilers. Compilers commonly used on Linux (gcc and clang) generally produce faster code than compiler commonly used on windows (msvc).
cafk@reddit
Which unfortunately makes no difference in a corporate environment, you get an even more aggressive endpoint protection independently if it's mac, windows or linux :(
Verite_Rendition@reddit
That's the big one. All of those play a factor, but scanning every file before it's run has a high cost in terms of both compute time and blocking time.

"yes"

You answered your own questions
inverseinternet@reddit
Still doesn’t have Co-Pilot though.
wh33t@reddit
There's an apt package that will put ads in the menu if you want.
I've also seen some cron scripts available on Github that will randomly reboot your computer to install updates. There is a .yaml file you can tune so that it will implement a full system crash during the update based upon a % chance.
You should have no qualms about switching to Linux if you're concern is that you will be missing out on key Windows features.
SharkBaitDLS@reddit
I need a search app that can’t index anything on my PC too.
Flukemaster@reddit
It also needs to hijack the first search result to something completely useless milliseconds before you press enter.
QuinQuix@reddit
This is extremely helpful
onegumas@reddit
But maybe it have search function to look for local files on Internet?
Hour_Firefighter_707@reddit
Good. But how does Davinci Resolve work on Linux? Is it fine or do people still have weird issues with audio and video codecs?
Kinda weird they're testing "creator" workloads but totally skipped the fastest growing NLE and the best colour grading tool in the industry.
BTW, going off on a tangent, am I the only person who hates the terms "content creation" and "content creators" etc.?
certainlystormy@reddit
iirc davinci resolve doesn't officially support a lot of linux so it like.. halfway works
hurtfulthingsourway@reddit
no they have full support for rockylinux, you just have to buy it to get h265 etc, and far as i know it is only missing AAC audio
certainlystormy@reddit
i just feel like running a specific distro on a much older kernel built for servers and enterprise and buying a $300 video editor is a bit much to ask usually for support
hurtfulthingsourway@reddit
well when you're on 100mil+ projects you would want enterprise software.
Plank_With_A_Nail_In@reddit
You also won't be using Linux either.
CataclysmZA@reddit
Resolve is one of the pain points, the native Linux version just does not jive with the rest of the ecosystem unless you have a very specific setup that Blackmagic does/did support.
There will be better options in the future, it is what it is for now.
mtrx3@reddit
Resolve and Linux is something I wrestled with for over a month until finally giving up and just going with a Mac to get away from the current Windows 11 hellscape.
Resolve is mostly useless on Linux due to codec licensing issues. No H264 or H265 so there go the two most popular video codecs, no AAC so there goes the most popular audio codec. Unless you want to convert all your footage to codecs that Resolve on Linux accepts, simply do not bother.
GPU acceleration is also more miss than hit, even with the Studio version. I struggled to get my 9950X3D + 5090 to not drop frames on a fairly light project.
Frankly, if you do professional grade video editing, Linux isn't there yet. And no, Kdenlive isn't better, it's terrible in other ways.
Die4Ever@reddit
why does Resolve have issues with video codecs that seem to work fine in Kdenlive?
goldcakes@reddit
Because they primarily service industry customers / professionals, and licensing codecs is a big deal.
Klutzy-Residen@reddit
VLC argues that it's free software and therefore dosent have to comply. Says the user needs to make sure codecs are properly licensed.
That argument wouldn't work so well for Blackmagick Design.

"... The software is not sold, and therefore the end-user becomes responsible for complying with the licensing and royalty requirements. You will need to contact the licensor on how to comply with these licenses..."
77ilham77@reddit
Only for the free version. The paid Studio version already includes H264/H265 de/encoder.
So it only useless for those who rely on the free version.
mtrx3@reddit
As I said, I was on the paid Studio version. It doesn’t solve the missing AAC codec or GPU acceleration.
FlukyS@reddit
It is not bad but it is apparently a bit of a pain to install
evolvingwild@reddit
bloated os filled with crap runs slower then unbloated os. shock!
ShiftPrimeNet@reddit
the Threadripper PRO 9975WX + RTX PRO 6000 Max-Q setup is the interesting part: once you strip away consumer-driver weirdness, Linux winning in compilers/renderers/encoding is less surprising than how close Windows stays in the GPU-heavy tests. for actual creators the missing datapoint is still Resolve/Adobe-style codec and plugin pain, not raw CPU throughput.
VinhTran5122@reddit
The internet is really really dead, huh?
spaceman_@reddit
I love Phoronix, but have they ever reported a loss for Linux as such in their post titles?
HuntKey2603@reddit
unhinged take
FlukyS@reddit
To be fair he is just automated testing these and writing the articles based on his testing utility. It should by noted that this is a lot of pretty favourable tests for Linux that are platform agnostic. If Linux is slower than Windows compiling software then what are we doing

well as long as your software runs there and cuda works ok
