Controllers in general never should have gotten this expensive, especially joycons. Fuck joycons
Good_Smile@reddit
I was so surprised when I was given a switch 2 controller and it drifted like a fucking nascar, it was used for maybe a month
Sales > quality mentality going strong here
airfryerfuntime@reddit
Stick drift shouldn't be a thing for any modern controller. They should be able to calibrate around it if they're not using hall effect sensors. Xbox controllers have be same problem too, set one down hard enough and it can develop stick drift.
8-Brit@reddit
I've had my original Switch 1 controllers since launch and no issues.
I guess I'm lucky.
blaqsupaman@reddit
I do think it's partially that people generally like controllers to be much more sensitive than in the past but yeah there's really no reason Hall or TMR shouldn't be the standard. They're not even expensive for the materials, at least not for Hall Effect as the tech has been around for like 20+ years. At this point not having it is definitely a choice.
Doyoulike4@reddit
Sega unironically was using hall effect sticks on their first party controllers in the 1990s, the saturn 3d pad and dreamcast controller had hall effect in the mid-late 90s. Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony haven't caught up to a company that hasn't built a console since 2001.
Wizardwizz@reddit
It's probably by design at this point
vovovovovovov@reddit
why do you think theyre removable and replaceable from the console? no shit. and dumb motherfuckers will keep buying them
cocofan4life@reddit
The shit thing is the fanboys defending this by saying " you're playing too rough"
I don't know if they still say that but definitely the case years ago
itmillerboy@reddit
Wait what? the switch 2 stick drift is that bad already? Are you sure it wasn’t someone using an old switch joy con with the switch 2?
I’ll be honest I had a switch I bought on launch for years and never ran into the stick drift on any of my 4 joycons and pro controller (or whatever they called it)
Not doubting it happens. Just never something I ran into myself.
MillorTime@reddit
No one really comments when the product works correctly, so you'll primarily see comments about people having problems
Ironborn137@reddit
No it’s not. People just have a hate boner for Nintendo.
HarambeTheFox@reddit
i’ve found the switch 2 joycons are light years better than the switch 1 joycons. still not great but at least it’s an improvement. hopefully in 7 years when we get another home console we can go back to somewhat affordable high quality stuff
formulated@reddit
It is pretty sad given their history of durability and design.
awolkriblo@reddit
Opening a fresh joycon like a stick of jerky.

Smingledorf@reddit
The ones that came with my OLED when those were released did, in fact, come out of the box with drift already
Taint_Butter@reddit
I got so fed up with drift I ended up finding a controller with hall effect sticks and haven't looked back since.

That's the cheese pull!
WinglyBap@reddit
The switch “pro” controller is fucking dogshit as well. £60 for that shit.
nicolay719@reddit
Why do you not like it? Its honestly become my favorite these past few years. Still using the one I got back in 2019 with no issues
WinglyBap@reddit
No analogue shoulder buttons and way overpriced. Just feels cheap compared to a PS5 controller which has adaptive triggers, a touchpad and is cheaper...
Panichord@reddit
Why do you want analogue shoulder buttons tho? Genuine question because I remember those on the Gamecube and they were annoying, squeaky things and I don't remember playing a game that actually had a use for them. It felt like an obvious move to make them simpler.
VicisSubsisto@reddit
They make racing (or other vehicular) games feel way more natural to control. Also with games like Super Mario Sunshine which were designed for analog triggers, when ported to a system with digital triggers they have to map the same control to multiple buttons.
Panichord@reddit
Hey fair enough ty for explaining, I never really played racing games, but I did play Mario Sunshine and forgot you could change the spray velocity like that
VicisSubsisto@reddit
Yeah, you have to at certain points. The Super Mario 3D All-Stars version had separate buttons for full velocity and half velocity, with no in-between.
jerk_chicken_warrior@reddit
smash bros melee is another one where you could light shield with a half trigger press
VicisSubsisto@reddit
That's a design problem with the system, not the controller. You could put analog triggers on a Switch controller but it would have to convert them to digital to send to the system.

I'm afraid no one uses CanadaBucks, my dear Canuck.
Vii_Strife@reddit
Joycons are weird because on one hand they also have a shitton of tech in them and the tech itself is packed into teeny tiny controllers which makes it even more impressive but on the other hand they managed to put the most god awful control sticks in them for some reason
Jwkaoc@reddit
They barely use any of that tech too.
ender89@reddit
This controller has a lot of tech in it, you’d be surprised what the bill of materials adds up to.
Someone made a diy version out of steam deck parts and microcontrollers and the total cost for materials is something like $200. Obviously he wasn’t buying parts at scale, but it wasn’t a cheap project.
I’m inclined to think that the controller is priced to be sustainable, not to get the highest margins.
_Warsheep_@reddit
It's safer to price it at 100€/$ and then run sales later if it's selling well or the component cost develop positively, than being forced to increase the price later. That gets you bad press.
airfryerfuntime@reddit
There isn't really a lot of tech, though. There's nothing technologically groundbreaking, and none of the components are really that expensive. It's a controller with some touch pads and accelerometers. The touchpads and accelerometers require it to use a dongle, since they're not supported by Xinput, but that doesn't somehow make it this marvelous piece of cutting edge tech.
ender89@reddit
It’s not about cutting edge, it’s about how many components are in the controller. Here’s the diy project, the BoM (which does use commercial parts that would be a lot cheaper for valve) is something like $300 in off the shelf parts.
https://github.com/tommybee456/OpenSplitDeck/tree/main
airfryerfuntime@reddit
That DIY shit isn't even remotely close to what this stuff costs at scale. No shit it costs $300 when you're making a one-off prototype.
Those capacitive touchpad sensors would be pennies, same with the accelerometer SMDs on the board. This is stuff that has been around for a very long time.
This controller costs a hundred bucks because people will pay it, and that's the 'going rate' for a higher end controller. These probably cost them $20 each to manufacture.
Spice002@reddit
Have you ever actually done pricing for electronics at a high scale? Those touch pads are closer to $5 assembled at scale, accelerometers are closer to 20¢, but the TMR joysticks are somewhere around $1 a piece. Plus you have to factor injection molding (the molds for each part cost at least $10,000 to tool, plus the factory time to do the injection molding). After supply chain investment, you're probably looking at closer to $60 or $70 a controller for the first wave of production, then around $50 after that. Microsoft and Sony have better margins though, since they already have an established supply chain and dedicated assembly factories they own or invested in long ago.
Trendiggity@reddit
Not to mention that there is a minimum of several hundred thousand dollars invested in the R&D of these things. A controller doesn't come fully formed out of a designer's computer. There's likely been years of prototype testing and revisions, durability tests, mock ups... Valve isn't going into the controller business to bleed money. They'll have to sell thousands of units before they break even.
Like I am no stranger to calling out shitty corporatism but cost of components is one piece of the puzzle. Is the steam controller 2.0 expensive? Yes. Is it overpriced? That remains to be seen but I personally don't think so. I am going to pick one up on launch if general reviews are good.
JosephFDawson@reddit
Legit. I remember PS3 controllers being $50 and hated that

Early_Power_5366@reddit
I wouldn't really mind the joy-cons on the switch but I just don't understand why you would make a single handed control layout that fits a niche not many people play
_IratePirate_@reddit
Bro one of mine has stick drift and they’re tryna tell me I gotta pay $80 to replace the whole set ?
Bitch I’ll just play with the one, fuck is wrong with Nintendo bruh
R-K-Tekt@reddit
Exactly my thoughts. It’s annoying to see anyone defending these butt fucking prices, enough is enough. Idgaf if you play PC, console, or with yourself. The gentle gamer has had enough of these insane price gouging.
Zharken@reddit
while this is true "pro/elite" cobtrollers with the features this one has have been sold in the past for 150$ and more
Substantial_Bet_1007@reddit
so fucking real.
Dr_Axton@reddit
While still skeptical about the touchpads, the extra buttons on the back are a great thing. Use them on my deck all the time. Surprised it’s still a thing that is mostly seen on “elite” controllers
ElcorAndy@reddit
A $55 8bitdo Ultimate 2, has an extra L/R button and 2 back buttons.
Unless you really want the trackpads, there's no reason to get one.
Dr_Axton@reddit
It’s even closer to 40 where I live. Considering that Steam controller won’t be officially imported it’d be either 150ish USD where I live or I’d have to grab one on vacation
Caedis-6@reddit
The touchpads on the steam deck were an absolute game changer for me. One of my favourite games Rimworld would be borderline unplayable without them, if these are a 1:1 copy of the steam deck touch pads I'm buying
patrlim1@reddit
They're a touch bigger
Hennue@reddit
I used the old steam controller as a remote for my media PC which is connected to my Tv. It was fantastic while it still worked.
Caedis-6@reddit
I've got similar plans for my data storage lol whole media center controlled with the steam controller is gonna be so nice, did typing work well with the touch pads on your system?
Hennue@reddit
rarely used the typing but it was fine. Not great, just fine.
RocketRaccoen@reddit
Honest question: (I've been using my PS4 controller for years, also on PC) what does the buttons on the back add for the experience? What games get better from them? Which inputs (dodge/attack/counter/aim/shoot) do you bind them for?
Dr_Axton@reddit
On my deck I usually make them the buttons for L3 and R4 and one to toggle gyro aim while I hold the button. But that’s the universal layout for me, it depends from game to game. Some actually have a direct command mapping, like in slay the spire
Firm_Ad_5427@reddit
I use them on the steam deck all the time. If you like Civ, balatro, total war, mewgenics, darkest dungeon, etc, they're absolutely game changing.
On a controller I'm using at home though, I'd probably just sit at my desk instead.
-Darkeater_Midir-@reddit
Don't sleep on the pads. I don't really like the placement at first glance on this controller, but they are massive once you get used to them.
On my deck I use them for: *mouse input while keeping a controller layout
*More precise aiming
*Creating hotkey sets for things like quick save/load, toggling action sets, and completely breaking 'wiggle stick' mechanics.
EnderScout_77@reddit
using them as customized menus where you could easily do 10-15+ options on one pad is great
Gytoss@reddit
I know it somehow looked uglier in the first steam controller, but it was also my favorite feature of it. Love the touchpads, they work great and you at least arent going to be required to use them on this controller
Dr_Axton@reddit
Yeah, I know. They are glorified gyro toggles for me
Artemas_16@reddit
Afaik, there is a patent troll, who makes you pay for using back buttons, there were lawsuits and everything.
Krypt0night@reddit
Yeah fucking scuff or scump or whatever the hell. Been fucking up our controller game for years now. Base level controllers should have back buttons on all consoles.

Man i’m happy with my $30 8Bitdo Ultimate 2C
jevra035@reddit
I mean ,he has a point
Toys272@reddit
8bitdo does that minus the trackpads
richtofin819@reddit
The trackpads are where it's at though. Especially since I recently discovered the combination of track pads and gyro controls the same time.
Shahka_Bloodless@reddit
It seems like a cool idea but I don't even know what you actually use those for
Pleasant_Ad8054@reddit
For games that previously nobody played with controllers, because the usual controllers are very bad for it. Like real time and turn based strategy and tactical games. Isometric games. And I bet I don't think for a bunch either which are a pain to play with a controller, but with a controller that has two handy touchpads and gyro? Maybe completely different.
But this is something the community will discover over time.
nyaasgem@reddit
Yeah but at that point I'd just... use K&M
Shadow_Fox105870@reddit
I prefer that but I have a repetitive strain injury in my wrist that never healed right. It doesn't hurt all the time but it flares up randomly. Well for whatever reason probably ergonomics or something using a controller hurts a lot less than k&m. The problem is some games just aren't built for controller the steam controller was the best middle ground I found between still playing and my wrist not disintegrating. Before my old steam controller died I didn't use it all the time but when I did it was perfect for what I needed it for.
VicisSubsisto@reddit
richtofin819@reddit
Basically as a mouse, they take some getting used to but if you use them in combination with gyro controls. (On steam deck you can set gyro controls to only be active while your finger is one whichever pad you are using) And It very quickly can give you full mouse level control.
It's what I've been using on my Steam deck because so many of the games I like benefit from precision.
B4rn3ySt1n20N@reddit
I absolutely accept that it's way to expensive, nevertheless I'll buy it 100%. I knew it's going to be expensive so I was saving
samyruno@reddit
My own fucked up math is that I've bought a controller more expensive than it. And this one will be way better. So it must be worth the price.
ICBPeng1@reddit
Ive had the steamdeck for about two years now, and assuming it’s the same trackpads, they’re so fucking nice
They let me play so many games that are un-optimized for controllers by using them as a mouse trackpad, and the haptics are just 🤌 chefs kiss perfect
B4rn3ySt1n20N@reddit
That's the thing that catches me with the new controller.
ICBPeng1@reddit
Honestly, the speed and simplicity of custom controls on the steamdeck is so nice, I’ve got games where the back buttons are just set to A, so I can jump while still using both joysticks, I’ve got others where they’re just toggleable triggers, because it’s nicer than holding the trigger constantly.
I’ve got games where the joysticks are joysticks, but the trackpad is a mouse, for easier menuing
Id say 90% of my games have altered controls somehow, and it usually only takes a minute
B4rn3ySt1n20N@reddit
It's absolutely brilliant
Krypt0night@reddit
The trackpads are why I won't be buying this. Absolutely hated them on the steam deck too.
OCD-but-dumb@reddit
half their dpads make me want to kill myself, but i do like the company
Trendiggity@reddit
I have a Pro 2 and it's fine but I've never understood all the hype. The D pad is kind of sloppy and the joysticks don't have enough tension for my liking. It's a solid 7/10 and it was half the price of a Sony or Xbox controller but the hype machine goes hard online lol
awhaling@reddit
I believe some of gamesir controllers meets a lot of the same criteria as well. The steam controller is killer though so I’m glad to see it
Cry_Wolff@reddit
So it doesn't do that at all, gotcha.

The thing is this is the standard controller steam is pushing. Not a special controller. If you want a steam controller this is your only option.
DripRoast@reddit
People will be doing bespoke shell/button swaps on them in a matter of months if the deck community is any indication.
Lol3droflxp@reddit
As steam doesn’t have a closed or even semi-closed ecosystem it is irrelevant what they „push“ you can use whatever you want.
Pleasant_Ad8054@reddit
While this is true, that isn't how people are buying consoles, and they are positioning the steam machine like a console. People go to their local retailer, buy the console they want, and buy x controller that is branded with that console.
I think what the above commenter points out is that this is a typical case of hardware needs to exist and be widespread for it to be developed onto it. Controller rumble in games wasn't a thing till controllers capable of rumble weren't widespread.
Lol3droflxp@reddit
I see your point but the steam machine will be a niche product bought by people with high tech literacy. Additionally it is marketed as a „console that is a PC“. I don’t think that many people will feel pressured to buy the steam controller enough for it to be a deal breaker.

Steam controller has a ton of cool utility but that doesn't mean you necessarily have to adhere to either of worshipping it or hating it.
If you got yourself a $40 basic, well made controller and it's doing all you need, you aren't required to buy anything just because it's new, nor do you need to shit on anything you haven't bkught
But apparently that's too complex for reviewers
altSHIFTT@reddit
My $60 basic controller does all I need except the trackpads lol. I might actually sell it and put that towards the sc2. Unfortunately it's gonna cost me $175CAD which is a fuckton of money. I'll have to think on it, I probably won't even be able to buy it for a while because I bet it'll be out of stock immediately.
oermin@reddit
I feel sick
altSHIFTT@reddit
Yeah I know right, I remember when full games were $40 and controllers were $30. That wasn't even that long ago!
Xalterai@reddit
There are still great controllers for $30-40. 8bitdo makes some of the best controllers rn, and they're very affordable. My Ultimate2 was only $40, and it's got all the same bells and whistles, aside from the trackpad.
altSHIFTT@reddit
I was curious so I looked up my order and I paid $80CAD after tax actually. It's for the 8bitdo ultimate controller, the ultimate 2 is on sale right now for $75 down from $80.
Xalterai@reddit
I forgot about how expensive the tech prices are in Canada, I was talking in USD. I got my Ultimate2 for $35USD on Amazon Cyber Monday

You learned very fast to not let the controller touch anything while playing dark souls on the PS3, or putting it down on any surface if you were around an NPC. More than one save was bricked from smashing Andre in the balls with a hammer on accident

I don’t know what MS/Sony did after that generation but the spring inside the R2 buttons (despite the slope) always felt so much smoother than anything newer.
As in, there was very little friction or unevenness when pressing them. They wobbled, but that was really it.
Rikkushin@reddit
The reason it feels so smooth is also the reason why it breaks and slopes so easily.
ActualWeed@reddit
I got my ps5 controller for 50 euros
xFREAKAZOIDx@reddit
I got myself an 8BitDo controller recently and it's been so nice, and it was cheap.
TheNipplerCrippler@reddit
Yep! I got one a couple months ago after using a PS4 controller for years. It’s infinitely better as it instantly connects and disconnects when it’s off or on its base so no more ds4windows lol. It was like $50 too. I just don’t like the idea of the touchpads taking up more than half of the front of the controller so my 8bitdo is exactly what I need for half of the price.
Doyoulike4@reddit
8bitdo and gamesir at this point have basically cornered the market on like $50 and under controllers that just kinda work and most if not all have hall effects so they outlast first party controllers unless you just throw them across the room constantly.
kmmck@reddit
My controller isnt even $20 and its pretty great. I enjoy it a lot for Tekken and Yakuza
Cry_Havock@reddit
From what I've seen so far when It comes to the PC user base you kinda have to love/worship it with the exception of keyboard and mouse purist.
Another thing that I've gathered from what I've seen so far is that it is automatically better than all other controllers in every single way. I didn't even know so many people got their hands on it already.
LiebeDahlia@reddit
I got the "basic" 60$ ps5 controller and it barely functions as a controller. In some games its completely unsupported even through USB, and in some it only gets recognized as a generic USB controller. vibration almost never works on any game, steam games only work cuz goated built in emulator and for the rest i need to use 3rd party emulators that sometimes also dont work. I couldnt play F1 2025 cuz it detected the emulator as cheats and wouldnt let me launch the game lmfao. But i guess its my fault I prefer the layout of PS5 controller over Xbox one
56Bot@reddit
I would love if Valve made a similar but "basic" version with maybe less precise joysticks (so long as they don’t drift), no touchpads, USB only, for like 30 bucks.
JoeDaBruh@reddit
I got one for $5 because it was on sale, though it wasn’t the one in the image but one where the right joystick was replaced write a touchpad joystick hybrid
I can confidently say that it was the worse and most annoying controller I’ve ever used. I tried to play the newer Lego Star Wars with it and aiming anything with the touchpad joystick thing was impossible. Though the one in the image might be better since it actually has two joysticks but I think I’d still prefer my joysticks to be lower down
Bot1-The_Bot_Meanace@reddit
I bought one of the old steam controllers when they were like 30€ and have been using it as a remote for my pc when I stream stuff to my TV from it. Has worked perfectly for 6 years or so.
0Lukke0@reddit
100%, got a basic 8bitdo, classic 360 layout, 4.2 hz wireless, forgot when was the last time i recharged it but has been going daily for 3 weeks, 4 years on abuse in monster hunter with no drift or janky stuck buttons. All for just $20.
I'd still want the steam one just for the sake of having a complete neat package in case some of the features are convenient for game i find (trackpad must be really nice for RTS and some CRPGs), but 100$ just to have a controller that you might end up using as a dualshock 2 is quite the nonsense.
EnderScout_77@reddit
cheaper controllers kinda suck though, I've had to replace the same one 4 or 5 times at a point to where I bought a $150 razer one and had zero issues since.

Works on any game so long as you can add it as a "non steam game" which is the case for most storefronts, though I've heard this doesn't work with Xbox game pass. Can still use it just without automatic swapping of profiles by setting of a "desktop configuration" using standard xinput and such
nyaasgem@reddit
Holy shit this sucks ass so much. I was seriously considering it but if it really doesn't work without Steam then it's a hard no.
So much for open software and open hardware.
samsonsin@reddit
Literally any advanced peripheral needs accompanying software? Mice, keyboards, every other controller?
Would it have been better if you needed to download "Steam Peripheral Hub" or something?
Only part that's annoying is that the "dumb mode" without software is a KB+M, which I'd say is the better option for both the steam machine and any HTPC / console like PC where a desk with a KB+M wouldn't always be easy.
nyaasgem@reddit
Yeah, if you use the term "software" very loosely. Yes, driver is a piece of software but it has a different name for a reason. And if you don't have some quirky peripheral, 99.99% of the time a driver is already shipped with your OS, you don't need to do anything extra for it to work. (I'm talking about basic functionality, I know a lot of "gamer" peripheries come with some kind of "hub" sw for LED control and shit, but without that it will still function as a basic input device)
Same with Xinput and Dinput, Windows (and I think the Linux kernel too, don't qoute me on that) already ships with the components that needs any controller periphery to work.
Compared to this, calling the Steam client just an "accompanying software" is quite rich. I have a GuliKit controller, and I did not need to install (and constantly run) a client that takes several hundred MB of space and equal amount in RAM, and I did not need to create an account and be lo for a service just to use a basic input method.
No, it is perfectly reasonable that some features require Steam because it relies on Steam input, but most of the device is just a regular controller that Xinput could handle perfectly fine. Not including it is insane.
samsonsin@reddit
I don't know where you got the idea that i liken steam to something like a driver. If you want any kind of advanced functionality like macros you tend to need software. Logitech uses ghub, steel series has some software, same with razer and everyone else really. The only weird choice here is that the "default" scheme that the steam controller will function as is KB+M. I can understand that being a weird stance if you look at it like "just a controller". But it's designed much more alike to the steam deck than the Xbox controller. It's not meant to be a secondary input method, where KB+m is the primary one. It's supposed to ship with the steam machine and work with the steam frame. The default bindings mapping to kb+m makes perfect sense if you expect it to be the sole input device. After all, if steam isn't running you need some way to navigate the desktop enviorment to log in, download stuff, start steam, etc.
Tell me, if you had a PC with no kB+m and only an Xbox controller, would you have any way at all of doing anything except going out to buy more standard Pc peripherals?
It makes perfect sense, it's a logical design decision. And for 99% of people interested in buying it, having steam installed is a foregone conclusion.
If you're so hung up on it I am sure you will have access to everything you need to write a FOSS solution that you could share online. AFAIK nothing about the steam controller is locked down in an effort to stop that. I'm sure someone will make such software so you could just wait for that.
nyaasgem@reddit
Good, if I want that I'll just start Steam. If I don't, then I should be able to use it as a controller, which it is. Even if it can function as something else. Even if it's not its primary function. It has every input as a standard controller has though so...
Well guess what, those are also standard inputs. You don't need any special software to make a touchpad and left+right click work.
My previous paragraph. In itself, a touchpad is nothing special. I'm sure it can do more. That's ok, I can run Steam if I want that.
And I also have Steam installed. I just don't want to run it constantly. Especially not when I specifically have a game outside Steam.
I seriously don't understand why are so manly people so eager to die on the "yeah standard controller input on a $100 controller-looking-not-controller thing is actually perfectly reasonable" hill.
samsonsin@reddit
Not wanting to need a KB+M on a HTPC is not a weird hill to die on.
Option A, kB+M standard input: will always work in any situation. Start steam (or some other FOSS software with the support) to get full functionality)
Option B, standard xinput: shit outta luck, grab a KB+M
admittedly, you could have it be xinput but the pads be mouse. But how do you handle the paddles? Set them to standards ABXY? I guess you could, but then you have no other inputs like escape, enter, etc. And even if you use paddles for those functions, that hardly a lot of available buttons.
Instead of a weird hybrid that does neither job well, just have the basic functionality be perfect for HTPC style workloads, rather than a standard desktop workload.
It's simply the best choice if you aim to make the largest amount of people happy, in my estimation. Diehards that can't abide by having to run one extra app on your computer are rare.
Kahlypso@reddit
You know what works everywhere?
My elite controller, going strong for four years now.
samsonsin@reddit
Where's that? Your Xbox and windows pc?
Jokes aside, doesn't surprise me. Through how do the paddles work? I presume they're just bound to abxy but default?
RamsesTheGiant@reddit
Considering the fact that Microsoft and Steam have been in talks for native Steam integration for the next Xbox and there being a none zero chance Steam had a hand in the development of Project Helix, I will bet this controller will work with Gamepass at some point
samsonsin@reddit
Yea, there will undoubtsble be a FOSS solution to the incompatibility. In fact, several comments on threads like these suggest there's already methods by which steam overlay can work with gamepass.
Xbox supporting steam and the steam controller would be amazing. Would make the console my go-to recommendation over playstation at the very least. I love playing games on a controller but no console matches pc when it comes to controller support courtesy of steam input which is honestly fucking hilarious, considering that most pc players prefer KB+M.
catgirl_liker@reddit
I'm not downloading any launcher bloatware
samsonsin@reddit
...how do you play games then? Just pirate stuff? Or do you do stuff like download GOG, install game, then uninstall GOG immediately?
Like, how large is steam install? 2gb? Having it in the background is literally nothing on any pc made in the last 15 years
outfoxingthefoxes@reddit
If it was Nintendo making you installing a Nintendo app to use your controller on PC you'd be complaining. You can play only on PS2 emulator and be forced to install Steam to launch the emulator just to use the controller.
CrazyElk123@reddit
Well vast majority of the pc audience have Steam eitherway, because its the best store by miles. A "Nintendo App" would have Nintendo games on it, and thats about it.
outfoxingthefoxes@reddit
At the end of the day is, in this particular case, a program just to use your controller
CrazyElk123@reddit
If you dont happen to have or want Steam, simply dont buy the controller. Simple as that.
outfoxingthefoxes@reddit
I think that even then I can avoid purchasing it and still explain why I will not purchase it
TwistedScallion@reddit
Y tho?
samsonsin@reddit
Sure. You can buy expensive KB and mice and not use software for them. You can also avoid Nvidia app and w oid the amd adrenalin software. I guess its somewhat unique that the steam controller absolutely requires steam to be just "a controller", as per default its a shittier KB+M.
That said, like 80% of the reason the steam controller is even relevant is Steam Input. It's by far the best controller remapper on the market. Without it, everything that differentiates the steam controller from a Xbox controller is the price and stuff like it using TMI joysticks. Hardly worth the asking price without the software half of it
So I personally think it's perfectly natural to enforce it honestly. The only reason people like I find it acceptable to is that it's not maliciously locked down and the software it needs is already industry leading. Lack of support ≠ we will block you from using it unless you do as we say. Will just need some FOSS people to pick it up
Dje4321@reddit
I mean thats already a thing for the DS5 from PlayStation. Literally only the xbox controller works out of the box in windows. Every other controller needs remapping software
samsonsin@reddit
Emulation when theres no alternative is fair game. Similarly, if a storefront just republishes a 20 yo game at a €50 premium.
If Nintendo made a storefront and released TOTK on PC I'd download and buy it.
catgirl_liker@reddit
It's the principle. Why do I need another program to open an exe for me?
lron_tarkus@reddit
2005 wants its talking points back
"Why would I need a program to save my game? Thats what a memory card is for"
samsonsin@reddit
Well, you do if you're on Linux, via wine / proton I guess.
Simply put, you can't embed all the features of the steam controller into the onboard system. You can embed it all into a driver either. You need some software support for it all, just like you do for gaming keyboards and mice.
I guess they could make lighter weight software separate from the storefront for the controller, but I can see literally 0 reason why this would be relevant. Maybe on extreme gaming like raspi emulation I guess?
Silver-Suspect3158@reddit
So you're only playing games via GoG on PC?

i have a steam controller 1, it can act as an xbox controller in any game or app. If you can add it as non-steam game you get more features
samsonsin@reddit
Mapped per default as a KB+M, just like the deck and old steam controller. Makes sense since you want the basic config to be able to navigate your desktop. As long as you can do that, you can start or even install steam without using your KB+M. Pretty damn convenient for HTPC's like the upcoming steam machine.
As soon as it's running, you can set the "desktop configuration" to be whatever you want, though. Including basic xbox style xinput. Can pair this with chord to retain kB+m functionality (hold system button to temporarily swap to another config). Can similarly just layer configs on the default config to get a "hole system button +dpad to switch profiles", complete with UI elements and such.
PedanticBoutBaseball@reddit
If you add your linux distro .exe's to steam as a non-steam game (lower left corner of the window) you should be fine
sevenut@reddit
You can just add them to steam and steam input will work on them.
PiscesSoedroen@reddit
just to add, even if you have no steam games nor steam controller, steam is still a useful app simply because it almost always automap any controller correctly and will make sure any games that is added to your library detects your controller
ender89@reddit
You can use it as a generic gamepad, steam is required for button mapping and the trackpads. Adding the game as a non steam game will give you steam input configurations, and the trackpads will work as long as steam is running (because the trackpads shouldn’t work as a mouse without steam running, that’s an OS thing).
zacyzacy@reddit
It's not. If you don't have steam open or even installed it just becomes a direct input controller+mouse like a ps5 controller
_Planet_Mars_@reddit
The original Steam controller has had software to make it recognized as a generic controller without Steam for the past decade. No doubt this one will too.
ZachF8119@reddit
Does it? Wouldn’t waste the money to see for myself.
ender89@reddit
It works as a generic gamepad and supports Bluetooth. Steam is required to configure custom button mapping and the trackpad. And the track pad requires steam due to how computers handle human interface devices, they really don’t want a controller to also be a mouse.
Ladenverzippelnogip@reddit
This is kinda my pet peeve, since I don't know if this means that I could operate essentially the entire PC with the help of the trackpads.
zacyzacy@reddit
That's untrue.
Artemas_16@reddit
Pretty sure it will be seen as normal controller with XBox input by a computer. Without Steam you only missout on touchpads.
catgirl_liker@reddit
No it won't, watch reviews
bleuthoot@reddit
From experience with the old steam controller and using controllers exclusivity trough Steam, you can set a default configuration (called the Desktop configuration) to a standard XInput layout.
Artemas_16@reddit
Review says "it will be recongnised as a mouse with keyboard". While it isn't XBox Input (which do be sucks) you still can remap bindings using game's own options. But I agree that it will be harder to play some 3d action, if not impossible (as sticks will be useless). Some indie or strategy, would be okay though.
outfoxingthefoxes@reddit
If it wasn't for this my Steam wallet would already have 99€ on it
Brokedownbad@reddit
Honestly, most of the value comes from the joysticks and triggers all being magnetic. Stick drift won't EVER happen to a steam controller if it's calibrated even occasionally. Meanwhile the 170 USD Xbox Elite, 200 USD Dualsense Edge, both have Potentiometer-based joysticks, which get drift.
ChickenPijja@reddit
Us PC gamers have been spoilt for choice and price though, and we're used to it. I can get a new xbox controller that works for the vast majority of games on PC for literally a quarter of the price of the steam controller. It has fewer buttons and no gyro. But having play with xbox controller, steam deck and steam controller, very few games support the extra functionality of gyros and the extra buttons out of the box, so imo there's little value getting anything more than the wired xbox 360 controllers
SpezIsAGayMfer@reddit

Molkwi@reddit
I'm expecting reliability from this because it's Valve and they're known for not putting out complete garbage.

Can't understand the bootlickers. Like no matter how you spin it, it's not worth the price. Just because other mf charge more or the same, don't make this better. Also the fucking console controllers do that because they're their own exclusive controllers. If you wanna play on that you will buy it.
tearans@reddit

I'm liking my DualSense that I got to replace my DualShock 3 because I kept having to enable legacy features and stuff in my Bluetooth stack, and I wanted games to autodetect that I'm using a PlayStation controller and use the correct glyphs. DJspooner@reddit
There are $40 controllers across the market that have all the essentials and none of the features. Will any of them be compatible with the Steam Machine? Or will everybody be forced into buying the only available controller, which is priced at the premium level for other consoles?
Waste-Reception5297@reddit
Im fine with the main controllers I use now. (Dualsense and Sw Pro 2). $100 is just where modern controllers are nowadays unfortunately. Even the Dualsense an Pro 2 feel expensive for no reason. Both excellent controllers but for the price its definitely not cheap
ispshadow@reddit
Damn I'm learning about this controller from a greentext. It looks like a Jaguar controller and a Dreamcast controller fucked, but knowing Valve it'll be amazing. I'll probably get it
THe_PrO3@reddit
I mean the 8bitdo ultimate pro 2 can do Most of those thigns (No gyro, touchpads, or HD rumble) with an extremely nice dock and all for $60 with p decent quality. When my Pro 2 dies ill probably pick up one of these on sale but for now the Pro 2 is still the better deal.
MyDogIsDaBest@reddit

Regular membrane buttons and reportedly uninspiring triggers. If it had these bettered, then it would be the best. That said, I'll still buy it.
Ryachaz@reddit
I have a Steam Deck with those little pads, and I rarely use them for anything else than extra buttons.
I can and have used them and a mouse before, its pretty good, but I would never want to really game with it. Unless I was seriously hooked and the game was turn based or something, I would rather play something else and wait to play a mouse-centric game on my PC.
luckylegion@reddit
No haptic or 2 stage triggers is a deal breaker for me, but if I didn’t use the 2 stage or like the haptics so much it seems like a great deal.
Player_924@reddit
If it can be used on other consoles as a regular bt controller - it's well worth $100
Steam should have an "x-input" layout for when steam client isn't available to translate. It would lack the main touch pad controls like radial menu but would still allow a 2nd d-pad or other
Walrus_Morj@reddit
I bought an Xbox Elite Series 2 around three years ago. It's the worst controller I've ever used. The rubber started peeling after less than a year, and a button works only 50% of the time. The left bumper stopped working altogether.
Needless to say, I am insanely tidy when it comes to controllers. I never touch it with dirty hands, always clean it after use, and remove dust with a brush.

I know nothing about controllers and just looked up how much a Dualsense Edge costs and holy fuck why would anyone buy that...
Abortedwafflez@reddit
I think the person who wrote this hasn't bought a controller in the last 5 years. Third party controllers have improved MASSIVELY. They regularly include all of these features and for even cheaper, aside from the unique touchpads. Like I bought the Flydigi Vader 4 Pro, has most of these features but with the unique benefit of on the fly adjustable joysticks all for $85. Honestly most third party controller has these features like 8bitdo or Gamesir. Some, like the Vader 4 Pro I mentioned, have their own unique features.
I know he's complaining about first party options, but still, the Steam Controller isn't some golden goose like he's making it out to be outside of its own touchpad gimmick. Controllers have come a long way.
JustBadPlaya@reddit
Are there controllers on the market with grip sensors? Genuine question, cuz I am the kind of guy who hasn't bought a new controller since like xbox 360 ones
Abortedwafflez@reddit
If you mean like sensors like on the Valve Index that measures where your fingers are, then I don't think so. There might be VR controllers that do this, but in terms of regular gaming controllers then I doubt it. It's not exactly a feature outside of VR games.
ShakuSwag@reddit
You got any sites you'd recommend to buy these controllers?
Been using the PS5 for awhile, and could use a different variety.
I don't play shooters or anything, mostly souls like on steam, but I'm not sure what sites to use.
Abortedwafflez@reddit
Most just sell on their own websites or Amazon. There's no specific place to go. I would just go to the r/Controller subreddit to see what people are raving about if you are looking for info on what to look at. There's plenty of good controllers out there, some like 8bitdo and Gamesir are also getting into retailers like Best Buy now if you can't order online. Big world out there, don't feel like you gotta limit your options.
Fyrus93@reddit

Go get a gamesir. If you like the fuel shock layout, they have the Tarantula for $70 CAD, usable on nearly every console, has a ton of custom features, back buttons, on the fly customizable click vs press triggers, very high quality tactile buttons, on the fly gear based button swapping to change between Xbox button layout and Nintendo button layout, software to change nearly everything, and a function button that allows you to change a ton of settings when using it for console. If you prefer the Xbox layout, they have the cyclone 2 with the same functions but the Xbox layout.
Redd1t_is_Fake@reddit
is the battery easily replaceable like the steam controller or do I have to throw it in the garbage sooner or later and buy another one? cause the steam controller has a super easy battery to replace, no glue no cable no nothing, you open the controller and it's just there chilling.
MassRedemption@reddit
It's not like super simple, but it can be done. I've hadn't had to do it but it looks like you have to open the whole thing up, pop off the battery and replace it.
Khalku@reddit
Never heard of those, they look interesting. That said, I think a lot of people go to steam controller for the haptic track pad.
Sucks that the tarantula doesn't appear to have a wireless version though. Also can the customization bind non-controller keys (like keyboard keys) ? That's a flaw that 8bitdo has for example, you can only bind controller buttons to other buttons in their firmware.
MassRedemption@reddit
It does! I have one! And yes, they can do custom keys, macros, etc. I genuinely think it's the best controller on the market right now. On Amazon it's called the Tarantula Pro Wireless.
Khalku@reddit
Yeah I was seeing the wired orange one on their store, which honestly I really liked the look of but it wasn't wireless.
If you have used an 8bitdo controller before, how would you compare them?
MassRedemption@reddit
Imo, better. The switches that gamesir uses feel so much nicer. The buttons either feel like a keyboard or mouse click, not a membrane click like other controllers have. It feels controlled and really nice.
Laxhoop2525@reddit
It allows you to play games that don’t allow controller support, with this controller.

OCD-but-dumb@reddit
no idea what the other comment is on about, it also just acts as a xbox controller for that era of windows games
Artemas_16@reddit
Internet says, PC sees it as mouse/keyboard. So no for consoles and half-assed usage for non-steam games unless you put them through Steam (its can be done in a second)
displayboi@reddit
In that case I imagine that someone will develop drivers to emulate an xbox controller on it eventually, like with the DS4Windows for the DualShock and DualSense. Until then, it doesn't seem like very great value.
Siphillex@reddit
Bother. Time to buy another 8bitdo controller instead i suppose

battlefield1hypee@reddit
Controllers shouldn't cost $100, that being said you get insane value for $100 and it's worth it unless you literally aren't using most of the features. I was genuinely shocked people were complaining about the $100 considering the price of pro style controllers that do less and don't catch flak.
lawrenceM96@reddit
Only $99 mfw
Cythmic@reddit
Only downside is it requires Steam to play PC games. Hope it can play from other platforms via “Add non-Steam game” function
mehemynx@reddit
I got a Vader pro for cheap that's works for what I need. So I'll probably skip this controller.
That said, the price is fine (compared to everything else) and it's waaaaay easier to fix compared to other controllers from what it seems.
If someone needs a new controller, or something for using pc on a couch or something, it's a pretty good deal.
My only real gripe is I don't like dualsense thumbstick positions, but that's probably solvable with the trackpads
Khalku@reddit
Steam input only. No xinput/dinput options.
250hz polling (usable, but you can definitely feel a difference, maybe less so since its on a 2.4ghz connection vs a bluetooth one which I have experienced with 250hz which really sucked).
I like 90% of it, but not being able to use it outside steam does suck a little as someone who has games on other platforms, and I want to "wait and see" how the 250hz actually feels because that could be a dealbreaker on its own (and honestly a baffling decision in 2026 when the standard is 1k).
TW1TCHYGAM3R@reddit
I'd rather get a GameSir G7 Pro.
Around the same price or maybe a little cheaper. It's not this stupid shape and has no stupid touchpads.
Maar7en@reddit
The remapping software is steam's existing generic Controller software. It feels like 90% of the internet is finding out about this feature today and think it is unique to the steam controller 2.
The sticks are too close together and too far inboard.
The touchpads are so far from where your thumbs are that you can't use them for more than 15 minutes
It is an inferior PS5 controller. And I don't even like those.
Bring back the steam controller 1 you cowards.
ChangingMonkfish@reddit
This misses the point that it’s not just up against the OEM DualSense and Xbox controllers (including the elite versions). There are other, very decent, premium feeling PC pads. The 8bit Do Ultimate 2, for example, has TMR joysticks, hall effect triggers that can be switched between analogue and tactile mode, additional bumper buttons and back buttons, RGB and an included charging dock, all for virtually half the price of the Steam Controller.
So unless I’m missing something, for almost double the price, you have the touch pads and it only works via Steam input instead of natively with none-Steam games.
Not saying it may not be worth it if someone can explain why the touchpads are such a game changer or any other reason it’s better than those other options (More durable? Better build quality?).
As it stands, whilst I don’t have anything against it, I don’t see why it’d be worth the extra over those other good third party controllers unless the touchpads are truly that revolutionary (given that it hasn’t been on PS5).
Regular-Cup9528@reddit
Depends on the games you want to play with it. If it’s something like rimworld I’d consider it unplayable without touchpads.

Valve continues to win by doing thing alright and letting the competition shoot itself in the foot.
This year they plan to enter the console and VR markets seriously, after years of testing different technologies and pricings with the Steam Deck and the Valve Index. If Valve puts some money into marketing to disrupt the market, I predict Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are in deep shit.

Yes, 150 Canadian is a lot for the steam controller, but yeah in comparison to 270 for the Dualsense Edge it feels a lot more reasonable. I don't think I'd pay more than 100 for it though.

If i did not already have 3 Xbox controllers and the steam controller 1 (which i never use) i would totally get one. 100 sounds ok for me for what it offers

People definitely complain about the price of the expensive Sony and Microsoft controllers. I expect this one will probably sell decently, although the fact that it only works with Steam is a drawback. I still don't know what they were thinking with the design of the last one.

They are also making it very easy to repair yourself, and working with a company to ensure a good distribution of parts

More than I thought, less than I'd have paid honestly. There's no other product that comes close in features and customisability.
I sincerely hope the format sticks and we get competition driving down the price of the format. Can't fucking believe the xbox360 format is still alive today. Fuck me barely any game uses the gyro which is a fucking sin.

The only people that complain are the ones that already have a controller that works for them. The price is fine. The fact that there's Steam Support for this thing is the biggest plus you can ask for. It's essentially warranty.
KommSweet@reddit
I'd use it as a secondary controller but since it doesn't have haptic vibrations and adaptive triggers like dualsense I'd never use it as my main controller for playing AAA games.

And if you show any kind of positive attitude towards it, you get labeled a valve glazer
