What is the best album cover by a British artist that isn't Dark Side Of The Moon?

Had to put the last bit in because the design is so iconic. Please post a pic of you choice.

You can't post it without the Anthony Wilson story about it.
Any-Guava4128@reddit
To be honest I don’t know. Can you do the honours? I just know it cost a shed load of money to do
snavej1@reddit
Hold on, I need to find a method for correctly measuring the 'bestness' of artwork. Does anyone have such a method?
SkyPilotOne@reddit (OP)
You will be graded by effort, not objective correctness.
snavej1@reddit
I am currently making huge efforts, so I get top marks.

Unhalfbricking by Fairport Convention.
It’s a bit like the Abbey Road cover. A seemingly innocuous photograph, but the more you look at it, the more you see.
It beat Abbey Road imo because it just seems more “English”.

Apparently British American. Plus the cast, musicians and production was British and recorded in Britain.

This or Somewhere in Time
madgietoyousir@reddit
I have the blueprint to this one hanging on my living room wall. My boyfriend did some art work for Dave Lights and he got a signed copy as a thank you. I agree awesome cover.
Hamsternoir@reddit
Tricky as the classic years have some amazing art and this probably is the best, I personally like Seventh Son but I'm usually wrong
GaimOfThrowns@reddit
Seventh Son is my favourite album, but Powerslave (Maybe Somewhere In Time) is my favourite IM artwork.
Maybe No Prayer...
Maybe aces..
Damnit!
Hamsternoir@reddit
So not Dance of Death?
Anything by Derrick Riggs basically.
Christian-Metal@reddit
All the Derek Rigg album and single sleeves are brilliant. I'd take this one and perhaps Somewhere In Time as the best. Love After Death artwork also grabbed me when I discovered it in 1997. It represented how I felt listening to the music for the first time.
Content-External-473@reddit
Whilst I think this is their best album, I think killers is the best cover
AlfCosta@reddit

This and Sgt Peppers. Love ‘em both!

whiskeysmoker13@reddit
My choice too.
WorldlinessNo874@reddit
Must be the most famous cover ever.
BuncleCar@reddit
It's got a Grade 2 listing and has to be preserved. Countless people have had their pics taken there :)
Bossman_Mike@reddit
The lore around it is amazing... and ridiculous.
The guy standing under the tree was traced years later and was just waiting for his wife who had an appointment nearby.
The police van belonged to the copper(s) managing traffic and keeping fans away.
The numberplate on the Beetle is a total coincidence and Paul poked fun at it on a future solo cover.
Bennjoon@reddit
I love the dead Paul conspiracy it’s so kind of artful (but of course nonsense.)
Juuudes@reddit
Somewhere I've got a cutting from VW Magazine (or similar title) from the 80s which interviewed a bloke who bought that car and only later realised its significance (iirc).
jawide626@reddit
I'd say probably Dark Side Of The Moon is the most famous tbh.
fayemoonlight@reddit
If we’re sticking to Brits then it’s a photo finish between these two. In general though, Thriller is the undeniable winner
FIR3W0RKS@reddit
Suuuuuuper iconic photo. Ask anyone, at least in Britain who these guys are and they'll know it in a heartbeat, even if they don't remember their names. I'd even put this above dark side of the moon to be honest.
This album cover basically started rock music as a genre, and that's no joke
Distinct_Jaguar_7320@reddit
Yup. It’s this. Eminently recognisable. Of the moment. And can be recreated by fans (for last point see also WTSMG).
mystermee@reddit
This would be my pick. People may recognise ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ if shown it but I don’t think if you ask most people across all age groups many would instantly have it in their minds like this one. Iconic.
AdvertisingBrave2548@reddit
This would have been my pick as well.
Alternative-Sea-6238@reddit
Famous yes. Iconic, fair enough. But what makes it good? I certainly wouldn't rate it amongst the best.
Illustrious-Milk6518@reddit
I’m not a photographer, but that photo tickles something in my brain. It’s very satisfying to look at.
Eoin_McLove@reddit
You are crazy if you think this wouldn’t be considered one of the top 5 British albums of all time by almost anybody.
What would you suggest instead?
Alternative-Sea-6238@reddit
I don't see what makes 4 people crossing the street an amazing cover art.
Eoin_McLove@reddit

Spiritualised - Let It Come Down. The head is concave but when you look at it and move it around it can also look convex.
Rockky67@reddit
My favourite Spiritualized cover is the original soap dish style box for Pure Phase. When I bought it I left the box on a coffee table, went to bed somewhat worse for wear. An hour or so later I cut through the lounge to get a glass of water and freaked the hell out because that Pure Phase box glowed yellow green in the bloody dark!

Have you ever seen the vinyl? When I was a kid and I found this in my dad’s collection, and it was a moment:
Painting on a cracked wall? No title? No band name? Open it. The back is a block of flats? No titles. Sheet of lyrics? Weird symbols? Still no band name. Other side? Giant hermit. STILL NO BAND NAME.
Then I dropped the needle and “Black Dog” starts?
Changed my life.

I was scrolling to find this gem. Was on the point of posting it myself but here it is. This band changed my musical taste forever. My first gig at De Montfort Hall Leicester. I literally shimmied down the drainpipe out of my bedroom window and walked the six miles to town, aged 14. The gig blew me away, so much so I forgot to smoke. When it finished I was outside next to a merch guy flogging t shirts, pulled out my slightly squashed packet of marlboro reds and lit one up. The merchant bloke asked for one and i told him he could have the packet ( about 50/60 pence then) if he gave me a t shirt ( maybe £2, definitely more than I had in my pocket) and he did! My mother refused to wash it!

Off the top of my head I can think of at least 3 album covers that are similar (and older, so potentially inspiration for this one) and MANY that are better.

This was my answer too, without really thinking about it. Every song is a banger.

Stars of CCTV by Hard-Fi. Class album too.

You can just feel 2005 when you listen to that album. If you were a teenager or young adult at that time, you know what I mean.

There’s a book, I can’t remember which, perhaps Kill Your Friends by John Niven, where the sociopath main character sees this on a poster and thinks he’d much prefer to be on the nasty industrial side, as he could sleep easier knowing the police were kicking the shit out of the smelly hippy population.
Always makes me laugh when I see this picture now.
Far_Camel_5098@reddit
I was working at HMV when this album came out. We had a 20 of these as large posters and we were supposed to give them away to the first customers who bought the album.
I helped myself to 10 of them and sold them for a fiver a pop at the motorway services after a rave. And no doubt spent my ill gotten gains on Doves 🕊

I bought it in Subway Records in Guildford in 1979. It was oddly priced like all their records. I think it was £5.63. Things went a bit awry in the early 90s and I lost most of my possessions including vinyl. All a long time ago now I still listen to recordings of it though. <3

I like this because it's so incredibly janky and shit.
Apparently the album was originally going to be called War Pigs, so this is someone dressing up as a 'war pig' in the way an 8 year old with limited dressing-up-box access might do. And then they blurred it to vaguely cover up for the fact.

The Return of the Durutti Column. Both sides were just sandpaper, the front being stamped with its Factory Records catalogue number. Supposedly, the intention was to force you to keep it apart from the rest of your collection, as it would damage your other records if kept alongside them.
