Rtx 3080 or 5060

Both are the same price but I don't like the 3080 power draw I already acually got the 3080 but I'm returning something to the same store so I can switch too or should I undervolt ? It's funny cause I think I got an OC version anyway if so how to undervolt it without destroying it or something (if possible of course I don't know much)
TyRawr64@reddit
If you can afford it always go with the newer generation
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
The store guy didn't have the 4000 series so he started talking about how much raw horse power and that things and double the cuda cores are always better than newer software generations
Plenty-Industries@reddit
5060 will have lower power draw vs the 3080, and it has access to the latest nvidia feature set such as Multi-Frame Gen and the latest video encoder and decoder so you can run Nvidia broadcast more efficiently if you're a streamer.
50-series can also overclock very well compared to 30-series so whatever performance gap there is, will be smaller.
Also... a new GPU carries a 3 year warranty.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
I get you it shouldn't be a question but the vraaam is not sufficient for the card compared to an rtx 3080 and I'm acually debating whether I should save myself a trip and just undervolt it a 100w or something
Plenty-Industries@reddit
Undervolting it by 100watts just means you're gimping the card so hard that it will also be at a lower performance of the next tier lower card anyway.
Why dont you consider AMD cards? The 16GB 9060XT is a damn good budget card for around $400 and outperforms the 3080.
It may not be as strong in Ray Tracing, but in every other metric is the best value card that exists.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Heard its 2 to 5 percent loss only + the card I have is oc ironically so a 100 is not that far I think
Plenty-Industries@reddit
100 watts out of a card that can hit 300... thats more like 30%.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
It can reach 360w in furmark ๐ anyway I don't think it will be more than 320w in games if I undervolt like 50 70 watt it will be more than enough and probably will be the same to minimum difference
Plenty-Industries@reddit
What about a warranty?
3 year warranty is standard for new GPUs. You get a replacement GPU if yours fails in that time.
A used GPU that dies, means you're spending another few hundred bucks.
That peace of mind alone is enough IMO.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
You are making me nervous dude + it gives me the same performance as an rtx 5060ti for like almost half the price
Plenty-Industries@reddit
Im not trying to convince you to decide one way or the other, just wanting to give you some insight into buying a brand new card vs an older gen card.
Aeroswoot@reddit
Is there an option for you to get a 9070xt? It's way better than Nvidia 30-series cards, and likely cheaper with equivalent or better performance to the 4070-5070ti cards.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Yeah but I want an Nvidia card ngl
Aeroswoot@reddit
If you have the ability to punch up to a better GPU I'd do it. 12 gb of VRAM is a definitive floor for graphics cards these days, and you'll find yourself wishing you got a different card pretty quickly. If it's not urgent, try saving for a 5070ti or even a 5080/4080. You'll have a better experience overall.
Destructo-Bear@reddit
8gb is the floor
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Guess I will be on the floor for a while then or an rtx 4060ti 16gb I already lost interest in used after this tbh so probably 5050 or 5060
Destructo-Bear@reddit
Used is fine lol people here are just crazy
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
I'm undervolting if I win the "silicon lottery" I'll keep my build honestly
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Yeah but I kinda need the PC do you think I should just go for the 5050 instead of the 5060 as both have same vram? To save and such and in a month or so I can upgrade to an rtx 5060ti 16gb?
jhaluska@reddit
Overvolting is what can causes silicon damage, undervolting just causes artifacts/ crashes.
If you can get the 5060 16GB I think you'd be happier with it.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
While I can't get the rtx 5060ti 16gb I can probably get an rtx 4060ti 16gb it's just gonna take time + I said undervolting
jhaluska@reddit
It's hard to explain overvolting, typically the manufacturers place the voltage at level that they know is safe for for like 99.99999% of their silicon for 10+ years. They do this with a statistical model.
As you increase the voltage you increase the chance of damage. At some point it drops to 99%. Go high enough and it's 0% chance of safe.
Personally I've found I have good luck with never going more than 10% over the voltage and good cooling, but so many chips these days kind of have built in automatic overclocking it's a lot less common except on things like RAM.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Yeah but I don't think I'm gonna overvolt it ๐ I'm more interested in undervolting if I'm gonna keep it
jhaluska@reddit
Yeah, undervolting has a similar problem. But instead of risking damage, you risk losing functionality. At some point if you go too low on voltage the transistors just no longer function. Which is fine, it crashes and you go up a notch on voltage till it's stable. Not a significant risk for most people.
This is also why they bin chips, and sometimes people referring to it as winning the silicon lottery.
Later chips in a production run often have improved performance as the manufacturers slowly improve the characteristics of the silicon.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Gotta check my numbers then
Important_Sea_1136@reddit
There is no 16gb model except ti
Important_Sea_1136@reddit
5060 is a lot weaker card than 3080, I personally wouldn't do it.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Yep but I don't like the high power draw + the guy sold me a bad airflow case above all I don't know how I didn't notice I'm debating whether I should return the whole PC + he sold me a monitor with a blue patch on it I won't buy a monitor again without a good test first ngl
Important_Sea_1136@reddit
May I ask how's the airflow bad in the case? If it's lack of fans you could just slap some cheap p12s in it to fix the problem.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Yeah I got you I can do that but all of the bad experiences are not encouraging me to do so
And what I mean by the airflow is bad is the front panel is glass even though there is mesh versions of it on the case I made a research and experienced how hot can an rtx 3080 get in a bad airflow case + there is a mesh panel up which is good but I didn't put fans there which useless I guess
Important_Sea_1136@reddit
I see, glass front panel is terrible for airflow, basically no way to take in fresh air.
I had NZXT H510i with a solid front panel and when I upgraded my case into one with actual good airflow my gpu temps dropped by like 15'c.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Dude the GPU temps dropped like 25'c when I opened the glass panel on the side why is front glass panels are even a thing
iiStryker@reddit
Get the newer version derp
Why is this even a question if theyโre the same price
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
I was going for the 4060ti 16gb when the guy started talking about the "raw horse power" anyway I'm probably gonna give the vram and go for a new card probably an rtx 5060 or go to the 5050 to save for now and upgrade later (both have the same vram so I'm considering it)
iiStryker@reddit
The only downside is the vram
The ti would be a better option
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Yeah I'm not paying 700 dollar for it they sell it though for 600 if you're building a pc I heard still not pushing me to buy it
esw123@reddit
Try to undervolt 3080 first and see if you like it. With 3080 you can go as low as 750mV which will draw around 200-210W at 85-90% performance from stock. And it still will be 10-15% faster than 5060. But with 5060 I bet you can go below 100W.
I had 3070 which is basically 5060 without multi framegen and any day I'd go for 3080 over it for extra 2 GB VRAM. But only if the price is good on 3080.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
It's the Same price as 5060 for me + you sure about undervolting is safe? Someone talking about damage and such above you
FlavorySauce@reddit
Undervolting is safe, dude above doesn't know what he's talking about.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Yeah nice knowing but I don't think I'm keeping the whole PC I'm probably gonna go for a 5000 series then
kind_bros_hate_nazis@reddit
They were also talking about increasing the power for some reason, you will be undervolting and it's completely safe.
esw123@reddit
Yes, it is. If you want to be super safe don't overclock memory. If you want to be super-super safe, sell 3080 for 325-340 euro and buy 9060XT 16 GB for 380-400 euro or used 4070 for the same price.
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
If I can go up to a used rtx 4070 I wouldn't think of a rtx 4060ti 16gb I would've gone though if it's new or something
post_vernacular@reddit
RTX 3090Ti
Secret_Language_8665@reddit (OP)
Yeah sure buddy let me order one right now
kind_bros_hate_nazis@reddit
Get me one too
