To my fellow GenX side-sleepers...

For all the side-sleepers, as we 'age', how do you manage sleeping on your side and not tearing up your shoulders?
165averagebowler@reddit
I think it is a combination of my body pillow and big a$$ boobs
Salt-Woodpecker-6280@reddit
I have always had loose joints. My shoulders and wrists will pop out a little regardless of how in shape I am. I do a lot of yoga. Either way, pressure on my shoulders and hips from lying down always screwed up my sleep. I bought a SOFT, hybrid spring and foam mattress. Everyone thinks “firm” is supposed to be good but it’s so not. You need very soft and supportive at the same time.
TikiChikie@reddit
What exactly is the mattress you got? We are looking.
Salt-Woodpecker-6280@reddit
. It’s a “Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid”. I bought it at Mattress Firm. I rolled around on every single one in the store and this one, hands down instantly felt incredible. It’s the only thing I’ve ever paid full price for. There was another one but it was waaayyy out of my price range. It’s on a motorized adjustable base. I first got it because I had terrible sciatica and back pain then it ended up being essential after my Laminectomy then spinal fusion at 46.
ReindeerWise5170@reddit
Yikes! You’re practically bionic now. We have a smaller bed. That’s the Sealy Posturepedic Plus. And I love sleeping on it. It’s just not big enough for both of us.
drtyhppi@reddit
Believe it or not, there's an entire sub dedicated to mattresses. It's a very deep rabbit hole.
Proper_Buffalo_2923@reddit
I have never ever had a problem (im 57) until last fall when i tore both rotators....it is taking forever to heal......it is difficult to put on shirts, coats, hell its hard to do anything....including sleep on my side, which i have done since i was a toddler....ie i dont sleep much....
LadyBlacket@reddit
Have you tried sleeping in a recliner.? Those rotator cuffs are going to be a pain in the 🫏for quite some time yet.
Proper_Buffalo_2923@reddit
Ill have to look at getting one ...there was a fire at the house last year and i havent bought much furniture yet
LadyBlacket@reddit
Oh no! I hope life is getting back to normal & the insurance claim process isn’t slowly destroying your will to live.
BigBanyak22@reddit
I take sleeping pills, plus melatonin, then top it off with a nice mix of ibuprofen, acetaminophen and naproxen - and dristan. Still can't sleep. It was my right shoulder and hip and this year my left shoulder is worse. 😖
moltenwater@reddit
Add booze
ReindeerWise5170@reddit
I have to say the best sleep I got in the last year was when I had a shot of vodka before bed. I started doing that last fall, but had to stop for interaction with other medication’s. Big bummer. Much harder to fall asleep without it and much harder to stay asleep without it.
BigBanyak22@reddit
That's one thing I don't add into the cocktail of meds too often. But there's a sweet spot to be had of liquor and pills.
Havacookiewhydontcha@reddit
I use a nice king size pillow that’s firm enough for some support but squishy enough to shape how I want where I want. I used body pillows in the past but they are too big and hot, I just end up angry wrestling the thing in the middle of the night. The king fits me better, but a guy might prefer the length of a body pillow.
Miserable-Beyond-166@reddit
Angry wrestling is now the best way I can describe my sleep hygiene.
ReindeerWise5170@reddit
Haha. I’m more of a fish flopping around on dryland!
Greasystools@reddit
Cooling blanket, my friend. Cooling blanket
Havacookiewhydontcha@reddit
But that doesn’t help the parts mushed into the pillow, you can be sweaty in the pillows and cold on the surface- especially with the (required) fan moving air about the room. More uncomfortableness happens.
Everybody’s got to find their own bed zen, but thanks to all for sharing their tips & tricks! ❤️

weighted blanket is key. solved everything for me. 👍🏽✌🏽
ReindeerWise5170@reddit
How does a weighted blanket help your shoulder?
Pleasant-Minute-1793@reddit
I have a hiatal hernia (thanks dad!) and therefore reflux. So I have to basically only sleep on my left side and my left shoulder is cooked. It’s difficult to take my left arm, then raise it straight up overhead as a result.
Basically I’ve learned to be a back sleeper with pillows propped up to elevate my head. Basically kinda like a hospital bed angle but not necessarily super high - if that makes sense.
It’s worth the struggle to adapt and is apparently a more ideal way to sleep anyway.
ReindeerWise5170@reddit
You should try getting a wedge to help with that if you haven’t already.
Chichi4lyfe@reddit
I bought myself 4” bed risers. I prop the two feet up at the head of the bed and now I can sleep on both sides and not have reflux.
ReindeerWise5170@reddit
My shoulders are the only joints that are not affected by age yet. Fingers crossed.
FROG123076@reddit
My shoulders are fine. It's my hips that hurt and my arm falls asleep no matter how I position it.
caroline0409@reddit
I have a shaped foam pillow that straps over one thigh at night. I no longer have hip pain.
Tough-Advice2910@reddit
Do you lie on it?
caroline0409@reddit
No, it sits between your thighs and keeps your knees straight.
This type of thing.
https://sleepydeepy.com/products/dreampad-ergonomic-knee-pillow-for-sleep
Tough-Advice2910@reddit
Oh, great! Thank you. Off to see if I can find something similar here in the U.S.
caroline0409@reddit
I got mine from Amazon so you should be able to.

Yep, came her to say, "I just live with my hands being numb every morning!"
Tacodog2@reddit
Same
LYL_Homer@reddit
Hips and back are the issue for me, but a knee pillow solved that.
Tough-Advice2910@reddit
Knee pillow helped with hips? I need relief for hips, shoulder and neck….I’m falling apart!
LYL_Homer@reddit
Yeah, I used to have to go to a chiropractoer a couple of times a year. Apparently I was rotating my pelvis until the knee pillow use.
I also found that not having my pillow exactly perpendicular to my body helped with the neck, it seems counterintuitive.
Tough-Advice2910@reddit
Interesting. You keep yours at an angle? Pillow toward shoulder, if you don’t mind my asking?
rebeccanate@reddit
My shoulders are fine, it’s my hips! 😵💫 I’m twirling on the bed like a rotisserie chicken cooking. 😆
profmoxie@reddit
A knee pillow is going to be your new best friend! That and some hip exercises have totally taken away my horrible hip pain!
Tough-Advice2910@reddit
Are there things called “knee pillows” or is it just any pillow?
profmoxie@reddit
Yes! Search on amazon— they have a specific shape that makes them easier to hold onto during the night. They are ugly AF, but get the job done!
Tough-Advice2910@reddit
Off to get me one right now! The more hideous the better! Thank you.
furiousm@reddit
Pillow between your legs for sure. I have back problems and it made a world of difference, will definitely help with your hips as well.
Xx_SwordWords_xX@reddit
You have to bring your hips into alignment when you sleep by putting a support between your knees and thighs.
AgrivatorOfWisdom@reddit
Really good pillow, hug pillow and skinny knees pillow.
spmaniac@reddit
My set up exactly! I have a purple harmony pillow. Expensive but damn worth it. I stolen yours squish mellow as a hug pillow and then use a regular pillow between my knees
TenuousOgre@reddit
I roll. I use a pillow between the knees if needed. I also lift weights to keep my shoulders strong, and stretch to keep as much flexibility as possible. So far it works.
RelativeSuch6959@reddit
I brought my pregnancy body pillow out of storage this year. Best perimenopause decision I’ve made 🫠
RelativeSuch6959@reddit
It’s this bad boy, the Snoogle. The Mother of all maternity pillows. You can also fold it up to make sitting up reading in bed comfy.
LeFreeke@reddit
Which one?
Workerchimp68@reddit
Me too! I am a man btw, it works wonders for the sleep!
beatchik@reddit
Side sleeping pillows solve it all. I have one that's shaped like P. It's changed everything!
spenring@reddit
I love my side sleeping pillow. Game changer for me. I even take it on vacation
sand-castle-virtues@reddit
In rehab for shoulder do that reason!
Umeyard@reddit
Purple Pillow is what prevents my arthritis from flaring up in my right shoulder. I got it on an incredible sale (aka buy x get pillows free) and I dread the day I will need to replace, but damn it, it works. And 2 body pillow so if i roll over viola! Pillow!
Also i sleep with a stuffed animal. Keeps my shoulders from over rotating.... doctor recommended i sleep with a pillow held to my chest...I got a stuffed animal that is firm and holds its shape better than a pillow.
So go ahead and judge me, I'll take my stuffed flying bison over arthritis pain any day.
Xx_SwordWords_xX@reddit

I also have a support between my knees and thighs

PacRat48@reddit
I put a pillow under my arm pit (between my arm and ribs) and a thick pillow for my head. Gives just enough relief to not wreck my shoulder
Playful_Secret_2148@reddit
Yes! This is what I do too. Just started doing the pillow under the arm Pitts this year and it’s such a relief!! The stress it takes off my shoulders is amazing!
HummDrumm1@reddit
Wha do u mean
Playful_Secret_2148@reddit
Pillow under my arm pitt takes pressure off my shoulder. Helps with my sleeping.
send2steph@reddit
I think I need a diagram.
HummDrumm1@reddit
In fairness, he did say “Arm Pitts”, plural. Thus, the confusion.
sippykup@reddit
Just trying to understand. Why does sleeping on your side hurt your shoulder? I sleep on my side, I have zero cartilage left in one shoulder, but I sleep just fine.
Sarcasm-champion@reddit
Speaking just for myself, it hurts me because I have my arm under a pillow and my arm is raised about even with the top of my head. That positioning strains the joint and causes a stick shoulder in the morning quiet often.
sippykup@reddit
Oh, ouch. Yeah, I had to stop sleeping that way decades ago. I sleep on my side with my arms lowered.
Havacookiewhydontcha@reddit
The major nerve that runs through there down to your hand can get impinged through swelling or being compressed and the whole arm becomes dead pain. Impossible to sleep through that.If you have carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis it’s even worse.
Strangely_Kangaroo@reddit
I just roll back and forth all night, like one of those gas station hotdog warmers
jellycaster@reddit
I hope it works for you. I got the “cooling version” if that matters. It is way more forgiving on the shoulders than just the mattress.
Ok-Limit-9726@reddit
Did this for months, one night i rolled a dozen times! I was cooked

OTF98121@reddit
I thought the comfort channel was interesting until I realized sheets would have to be sold by the manufacturer and they’re probably super expensive
soloracer@reddit
Good catch
Lily_V_@reddit
I thought about that too, later.
MotoXwolf@reddit
Get a big, long body pillow and hug it like its Wonder Woman. It takes some of the pressure off the shoulders and keeps the knees from hitting each other. 👍
Immediate_Many_2898@reddit
Ha! I had to change from tummy to side to quit trashing my shoulders.
Express_Hotel2682@reddit
OMG I know the answer to this! I have had shoulder pain from sleeping on my side — terrible shoulder pain! I finally figured out how to sleep on my side without it - you need to get a really high quality super soft pillow and literally lay it under your shoulder girdle and then get the pillow you actually lay your head on and put it in the crook of your neck (between shoulder and cheek/chin). It works!
Dismal-Read5183@reddit

UnlikelyCash2690@reddit
I started strengthening my lower back with deadlifts. Started with a 10lb kettlebell. My back got stronger and I am no-longer a side sleeper. I’m a little embarrassed it took me this long to figure it out. I often wake up in the exact position in which I went to sleep. Much better sleep now that my back isn’t all messed up too.
KylaArashi@reddit
So funny it’s 7am and I’m currently pressing my shoulders against a wall to flatten my back out after a night of sleeping on my side!! Thanks for all the tips, everyone!!
Consistent_Switch378@reddit
I get migraines, I am F56, I use a thinner Casper pillow for my head, a fatter one for between my knees or against my stomach. I use a heating pad on my stomach with the pillow over it because my stomach burns, even with twice daily Pantaprazole. Then I wake up around 3 sweating balls & have to change my PJ’s. 🙄 Good shit!
motomom_246@reddit
Same, same, same!! Another F56!!!!

Well this might not be helpful but Last week I had overnight duty with my dad (stroke recovery, night aide called off) & I need to sleep on the main floor to be near him, so I slept in his new recliner. Oh my goodness, did I sleep great! Of course, I was up every 2 hours with Dad but went back to sleep instantly & body felt great in the morning. And I’m NEVER a back sleeper.

Hanging upside down is a game changer! Can't sleep like that though. 😅
Havacookiewhydontcha@reddit
Y’all remember inversion boots from the 80’s?! My dad used to hang upside down from our backyard swingset in those things and swore they helped his bad back. (He would never have been mistaken for young Richard Gere in American Gigolo. sorry dad.)
If I got up hung there now, there’s no way I be able to get down without dying.

drainage_holes@reddit
I got the “MedCline Shoulder Relief System”. It’s a goofy looking pillow set that has you sleeping on a slight incline with your shoulder in a pillow cutout. It’s expensive but it has been life changing for me. I was afraid it was going to be hard to get used to, but literally the first night I used it was probably the most comfortable I’ve been sleeping in a decade. I can’t say enough good things about it. It’s helped my heartburn, too.
LeFreeke@reddit
Does it force you to sleep on one side? Or can you flip from side to side?
drainage_holes@reddit
You can flip from side to side. You just need to flip the body pillow when you turn so the shorter side is behind you. It’s great for me because it keeps me on my side. Otherwise I always end up sleeping on my stomach, which is terrible for my back.
carlism01@reddit
I've been using a MedCline for years. Just got a new one last year. I started because of reflux but my wife said it made my snoring go away. But recently my shoulder and hip has started hurting again. I get up multiple times in the night to switch to the other side. I can only be on my left side for an hour before my left arm is numb and dead so I switch back. I can go longer on my right side. Maybe 3 hours. I suspect all this points to some exercises I could do to improve it. Not sure about the hips though.
Necessary-Film7832@reddit
Sleep with a firm pillow between your legs and knees
snorkelvretervreter@reddit
Somewhat similarly I have a firm thick latex pillow that elevates the head. This had the biggest impact. Secondly a soft but thick latex topper (at least 3" of real latex and not mostly filler) on top of a firm mattress. Those combined did away with all shoulder pain.
Nausicaaah@reddit

Five total rotator surgeries with tendon grafts in both, two separate fusions in my neck.... the only way I sleep is with a Posturepedic neck pillow and hugging a big fat body pillow.
RaccoonHaunting9638@reddit
I hope you got proper fascia release after so many surgeries on your r.c.'s, both shoulders I assume??? Ohh, the neck too, god your brave ! I was a therapist for an orthopedic surgeon
engelb15@reddit
Yea, I've pretty much been going to PT, yoga, etc... for the last 20+ years lol. Doc laid a Regeneten patch over both (not at the same time) and had to reattach both bicep tendons as well. It was rough. Had C5-C7 fused in 2020 and then C7-T1 last year.

ERRNofTN@reddit
Genx here and I have been a right sided sleeper for a good 45 yrs. I had to have rotator cuff surgery and sleep is impossible. I actually have to sit and sleep on a donut because my tailbone hurts so bad. I broke it yrs ago and have recently lost about 120lbs so I lost my butt. I wish I solid advise for you other than get a couple different types of mattress pads if sleeping n a hotel (which I do a lot because I travel for work) and I bought a top of the line sleep number which did help other than my arm would be numb when I woke up. This getting old is for the birds!!!
Havacookiewhydontcha@reddit
My husband travels for work too and sometimes carries an inflatable mattress to put over the hotel mattress if he knows it will suck. Seems to work for him.

Both of my shoulders are toast and I sleep on both sides. Lately my hands are going numb whether I'm laying on them or not. It's a drag getting comfortable to sleep. Don't get me started on the torturous, restless leg syndrome.
TikiChikie@reddit
Get some wrist braces from Amazon for carpal tunnel and sleep with them at night. My hands were going numb too and i saw a neuro who diagnosed carpal tunnel. If you start using them regularly now, it could prevent it from getting worse (worse = hand cramping during the day and numbness increasing)
Ichgebibble@reddit
Try jamming the skinny part of your heel on the non restless leg between the two biggest toes on your other foot. If both legs are restless just switch back and forth. I swear this really helps me.

At 68, I can comfortably side sleep.

How do you manage sleeping comfortably with sciatica?? Very recently has gotten terrible.
QueenZod@reddit
If it stays terrible you may want to visit your doctor. Bad sciatica can indicate a blown disc in your back, leading to pinched nerves and that pain. If it keeps up you can lose permanent function in your legs. 🙏🏻

My business partner (57) and I (55), she’s a nurse and I’m a massage therapist, are always looking for ways to help our clients and patients feel better.
We went to this mattress store where the owner talked to us for a good bit to find out what our sleep is currently like. I’m a belly/side sleeper, partner is a side sleeper, plus is a tosser-turner. The owner then put us onto this mattress that felt like heaven. I almost fell asleep right there in the store, on my back! I’m never a back sleeper, but the owner said it was because mattresses need to be positioned for our curves (knees, lumbar and neck all supported)
Check out her website https://www.aysmattress.com/ She does virtual appointments too
I already told my husband we are going there for our mattress and adjustable base.

I have a pillow designed for side sleepers, a pillow between my knees and a pillow I hug. Sleeping on my right side is more difficult these days since I tore my rotator cuff, but it’s starting to get easier since I transitioned to a desk job a couple of months ago and am no longer lifting heavy stuff at work all day. Also, a good mattress is worth every penny. I spent 4x what I had ever spent on a mattress before when I got my current one a few years back, and it has made a world of difference. Also, an adjustable bed frame. I sleep with the remote in my hand, and have different levels of elevation that is more comfortable depending if I’m on my left side, right side, or even my back on rare occasions. I’ll never not have an adjustable bed frame again. Game changer.

Memory foam on plywood and body pillows. No aches after I get things moving. Always sleep on my left side!

My shoulder has been fucked since I had rotator cuff surgery. Doesn't matter what I do it still hurts to sleep on my side.
AnitaLatte@reddit
Check out the Bob and Brad Physical Therapy YouTube videos. Lots of good ideas.
I use a pillow against my back, then roll slightly so the pressure is off my shoulders and hips. Otherwise, bursitis will keep me awake and will never heal.
mix_trixi@reddit
I was having this problem too and decided to fix it myself through PT exercises I found online. My insurance does not cover PT so I had no choice but to take matters into my own hands. I've been doing shoulder, hip and knee PT at home at least 3 times a week if not more and it rarely hurts anymore. For me, it's only my left shoulder but when I sleep on my right side, my damn hip and knee hurts from IT band issues. I cannot sleep on my back or else my lower back hurts when I wake up so I decided to just do PT on my whole freaking body. I think some people call this "working out" but I wouldn't know anything about that. A girl's gotta sleep though, right? I do at least half an hour of yoga every morning too and have been since lockdown, but the PT exercises are what really helped me. Also, I've got a little muscle tone in my arms now so that's cool too.
Artistic-Degree-4593@reddit
I just rotate like a rotisserie chicken all night because nothing I do helps with the pressure point pain in my hip and shoulder. I get a headache if I try to sleep on my back regardless of what type of pillow I use, so side sleeping it is.

Yes, one of my hips is worse than the other. I haven't been able to sleep on my left side in years. Now my right hip is starting to bother me too so I'm screwed. I'm trying to learn to sleep on my back with a huge failure rate. From only sleeping on one side for years I've actually made my jaw and face uneven from pressure on one side for 8 hours a day, sometimes more, not always sleeping, but trying. This is vain of me and I admit it but it really bothered me because it was very pronounced that one side of my head, my jaw was pushed over. It bothered me for so long I finally went to a doctor who suggested fillers, I got them, and the doctor did a fantastic job. If I didn't tell you I had them you would never know and now my face is nice and even. I was always against getting fillers and all that but it really has helped my self esteem. I hated having pictures taken of me because it was so obvious and wouldn't talk to people because I felt ugly. It's really been lifechanging for me.

Holy shit so glad I saw this thread. I can’t sleep on my right side because of GERD from an operation 6 years ago. Lifetime. I have to sleep on my back or left shoulder. Well - broke my left shoulder almost 2 years ago. Maxed out my PT allotment. Because I end up sleeping on that shoulder every night I have like 40% range and strength in my left shoulder and arm. I start on my back, but always turn when sleeping. Lots of good tips in this post.

I have a serious set up with pillows, a body pillow, and mattress topper- I’m about to leave on vacation and all I’m thinking about is what is the pillow situation going to be.
Keyeuh@reddit
Real! The other night I was thinking maybe I should get a pregnancy pillow bc damn if those things aren't pure comfort. I think it might solve my many pillow configurations. It's just me, the dog & occasionally the cat in the bed so I don't have to worry about anyone else caring. I can only sleep on one side bc of back & hip issues so I'm always stuck on my right side. My dog does get a little annoyed sometimes bc she feels she needs to be touching me at all times when we're in bed.
goodlordineedacoffee@reddit
Omg get the pregnancy pillow, I have had one about two years- very much not pregnant and also just me so I can have all the pillows I want lol- I love it soooo much. Except how am I going to sleep without it on vacation, is the problem 😅
Keyeuh@reddit
Um Carry on? See if you can stuff it into the little cart that tells you if your carry on will fit or not. If they tell you it won't tell them they're discriminating against a pregnant woman. (even though you aren't pregnant) :)

I’m not sure if you have ever heard of squishmallow stuffed animals. We have been using them as pillows for a few years because they’re so comfortable.
They recently came out with actual pillows made with the same material. I like the soft one but they sell medium and firm. Target carries them and they are absolutely the bomb.

I’m a mostly side sleeper. I use a small pillow between my knees, a regular pillow under my head, and I snuggle a Squishmallow with the arm on top to keep it from falling asleep. Works like a charm. I’m intrigued by the Squishpillows tho…
UrbanFuturistic@reddit
I used to be a stomach sleeper, but for some reason I can't sleep like that any more no matter how hard I try, and I now sleep on my sides. I bought one of those Coop body pillows, but I just don't know. It's awfully big when it's fully stuffed, and kinda wonky when I take any out.
meatfists@reddit
weirdly its actually to do with how your legs lie when on your side. If your top knee is forward then it causes twisting of your hips, and spine, and all that pressure gets put behind your lower shoulder blade. side sleep with knees together or top knee slightly behind your lower knee. will solve your issues, well it def solved mine

WhichAddition862@reddit
Random question. If you do a straight leg sit-up is it very painful? If so I would suggest a cervical spine MRI
akpak@reddit
I’ve had MRI on the shoulder, and cervical spine x-ray.
I’m not sure I even could do a sit-up of any kind with how shitty this arm/shoulder is.
WhichAddition862@reddit
I’m sure this was asked, but has frozen shoulder been brought up? My husband went through that and they thought it was his spine. He did about 2 months of PT and felt relief after about 2 weeks. Now it’s completely gone. He does still incorporate the PT training into his workouts

I'm a little late to the party but when I was in hospital after my ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator), they taught me how to sleep on my side with my arms crossed over my chest because you can't extend your arm out on the side where the implant is located for at least three months while the surgical site heals. And even then you have to be careful about not overstretching it so you don't rip the wires out of your heart.
It was amazing. My wife thought it was nuts when she first saw it but it helped a lot.
They said if you wear a T-shirt you can tuck your hand or finger inside your collar slightly to keep that arm from falling to the bed. The other arm (the top arm on whatever side is facing up just hangs down naturally.
Now it's that or with my arms stretched (almost) straight out while sleeping on my side.

Ok-Limit-9726@reddit
9 months ago i had ‘frozen right shoulder’ (bursitis) after 2 decades metal work, decade driving job, unable to even turn on my right side for more than 5 minutes, would wake me in my sleep with pain.
Saw GP, got cortisone injection, week later started physiotherapy,
Go to gym 3 days a week and never had a problem since.
Working on left shoulder now with physio, cortisone didn’t work as its a old injury while doing fencing posts in military. Mush harder trying to fix 30 year old tears/damage
Dantien@reddit
The gym worked for me too. Pain vanished when I started doing dumbbell shoulder presses 3x per week.
Dantien@reddit
My shoulder pain while sleeping stops when I weight lift and do shoulder presses. When I miss a week, the pain returns. Just gotta strengthen our upper bodies.
r7ndom@reddit
Here is how I handle it: 1. I sleep with my arms out, not with one arm under my head the way I did for years. That became a recipe for a sore shoulder. 2. I have a pillow next to me for my top arm to rest on. 3. Memory foam mattress topper, which helps to keep things comfy. 4. Adjustable mattress (mine is sleep number but it could be anything), which I tweak up and down if I start having shoulder pain.
For me, if I have things right, everything is gold and I can sleep on one side all night. If anything is off, I have to flip over every 2-4 hours to stay comfy.
Pads4Life@reddit

FightingFlaresandNF2@reddit
I have had plenty of those and they say I don’t have sleep apnea but also the nurse had to come in multiple times cause I would flip on my stomach and it killed the machine so they were always waking me up to flip. FightingFlaresandNF2@reddit
Well I’m a maniac sleeper! So I wake up and my arm and hand is numb so I just flip over. I never been a back sleeper and can’t sleep on my back. Last one I managed to set the bed alarm off and I also managed to somehow end up sleeping at the foot of the bed!

Crane-neck body pillow with a bend for under the knees. Memory foam, extra thick and round, and not a flat rectangle like traditional body pillows. I am still trying to figure it out. I have one bad shoulder and the opposite bad hip. I have a memory foam mattress and a memory foam piercing pillow (still getting new cartilage piercings in my ears every now and then!) I sleep with a pillow between my knees and a pillow with a smaller throw pillow on top to prop my upper arm on.
I usually start out on my bad shoulder with a heating pad on my bad hip (heating pad has a timer so I don't burn myself). I wake up just enough to turn over after a couple of hours and usually sleep on the other side the rest of the night. On really bad hip nights, I sometimes end up on my back.
Along with all of that is navigating my cpap hose in my sleep. It's better than the alternative, but getting old sucks!

All memory foam pillows when I'm on my side (I've always been mostly a back sleeper). I usually wake up and turn every 2 hours. If not, I'm likely in pain for days. Even if I fall asleep and wake up on my back, I'm usually in pain anyway.
It sucks to think I'll (statistically) live another 25 or 30 years like this. It's probably why older people always seemed grumpy to us.

My right shoulder I fixed by falling backward on ice and ripping up the rotator cuff and having surgery- it feels great. I need to fall on the left shoulder...until then I make do with a neck memory foam pillow, a knee pillow and a bet up pseudo body pillow to support the upper shoulder and arm. Fun fact I learned post surgery recovery: in a sling you can sleep sitting up with a pillow tucked under your chin.

Yep. I like a really firm mattress with a good 3” foam topper.
The firm support keeps my post-surgery back and hip from hurting and the foam keeps my shoulder from hurting. Along with a contoured side-sleeper pillow.

Oh my god, this happened to me when I broke my foot and had to sleep with my leg straight and foot elevated. I basically stacked a ton of pillows on each side of my head to try and lean on as if I were sleeping on my side. It SUCKED!
SantaTony65@reddit
I trained myself to sleep on my back.
AgateHuntress@reddit
I tried that, and because I have a connective tissue disorder and too large breasts, the weight of my breasts gives me costochondritis. It's enough pain to pull me right out of a deep sleep -- feels kind of like a heart attack.
I went back to side sleeping, but using Squishmallows stuffed all around me to keep me from moving too much.
I nap by sitting up the couch, criss-cross applesauce, with a small Squishmallow behind my neck. It's pretty much the least painful position for me to sleep in for shorter periods of time.
Routine-Airport-8075@reddit
Try a U shaped pregnancy pillow. I never got rid of mine after my son was born and I cannot sleep without it!
AgateHuntress@reddit
They don't really work for me. With the Squishmallows, I can change them around to both keep me in place and support parts that are acting up. The stuffies aren't perfect, but they work pretty well for me. I only buy holiday Squishes after the holiday, so I've gotten all of mine for 50-70% off. I have a set for the couch and a set for bed.
I've tried a lot of different pillows and supports, but so far, nothing has beat the Squish squad for me -- plus they're really soft which is nice when I'm propping up a painful tendon like the one in my elbow.
Routine-Airport-8075@reddit
I love this. I will try the squish squad. We have enough of them around here so I should be all set!

i’m a side sleeper currently using the stack of pillow method which isn’t great. I’m looking into a product called Med-cline. it has a spot where you can put your arm through but still have your head up in an incline on a pillow. And two different inclines one for a side sleeper and one for people who have GERD or acid reflux. I think one is a 10% inclined and one is a 15% incline. But it also comes with a side long body pillow thing too. Not super cheap but they’re always discounts it may be worth looking into for some people

I'm sleeping on 2 thick pillows, but it hasn't helped. 2½ years ago one shoulder started to hurt and my range of motion went to shit. A month or two after that the other shoulder started doing the same.
I have severe pain in both, I can no longer reach behind my back, and if I raise my arm too fast the pain is excruciating. Especially in my right shoulder.

If you're female and in perimenopause or menopause, 'frozen shoulder" is a thing that happens to us as our hormones dwindle. 😖🫠
I saw you don't have health insurance (fuck that entire system here in the US). Google: at home PT exercises for frozen shoulder. You could get back results you can do at home without special equipment.
Also head over to r/perimenopause. We have cookies.

If you can, if it's available to you, please try physiotherapy. Where I live I can self refer, and I've always been so pleased with the outcomes. It's the hip bursa for me, very painful. But there's shots for it. U gotta be hurting real bad to want them, however. Horse-needle type!
SnarkCatsTech@reddit
I physically recoiled reading that. Injections into joints aren't for the faint of heart, to be sure.
I've had the steroid injections into my spine at the neck level. BUT the place I got mine gives mild sedation so you'll stay still bc you know, spinal column.
Mom got a few in her heel to tamp down inflammation of her Achilles tendon & said that it was worse than natural childbirth.
I can only imagine how much injections into the hip capsule hurt. It's got to be far worse than the ones I've had. Godspeed to you.
Electrical-Bobcat435@reddit
Hey thx! Ouch, neck, heel!
Honestly, once pain is so bad to need this kinda shot, u just bite on a stick 30s then relief starts. But that lidocaine wears off within 8hrs then gotta wait a week for steroid to kick in.

We bought it back when they only made one model, so I guess it’s probably the base model. It’s still exceptionally comfortable. I used to wake up early every morning with my hips and legs aching really badly, and since we got the purple that never happens. I also used to roll over many times a night but now I usually don’t roll over at all.

Cranks_No_Start@reddit
Can’t hurt to have them looked at.
Mindless_Berry_4572@reddit
For me it's the hips. I always feel like there's a huge lump in them. No it's not the mattress.
TermusMcFlermus@reddit
I can't help but sleep on my side. Place a sizeable pillow between your legs. Mine reaches from groin to below my feet. I think it's a feather pillow. That keeps your pelvis from flexing inward. That helped my hips greatly which helped everything else to at least some degree. I use two pillows as though it's a snuggle friend. It keeps my higher shoulder supported and I tend to roll over at least a few times each night and I adjust as I go. I also use a memory foam pillow for my head and neck. It's not perfect but it's a huge improvement for me.
nmdnyc@reddit
I actually use a teddy bear. It happens to be one my mom gave me when I left for college, so it is nearly 40. RizzmwitTheTism@reddit
I went through 2 solid years of severe pain and frozen shoulders. It hurt so badly to sleep on my side but I had to. I was seen multiple times at the ER, urgent care, primary care, orthopedic specialist, and diagnosed with rotator cuff syndrome, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries. Ortho & PT treatments never helped the pain and immobility only got worse with time.
I started HRT (bioidentical hormone replacement) for other reasons and my shoulders completely stopped hurting within the first month and have never hurt since.
Hormone decline is one cause of frozen shoulder and rotator cuff pain thats worth looking into for those it could apply to. It was never even mentioned or considered by any of my doctors or specialists but turned out to be the complete problem.

Yes. I’m not informed on whether hormonal changes in biological men can also affect shoulders, but hormone replacement completely and rather quickly totally resolved mine.

Small/thin pillow between knees is a lifesaver. Those custom knee pillows are terrible imo. Just a small flat pillow works great. Yeah I am too, I have this method of fluffing pillow high, smack my head into the center, then push the pillow to the sides of my head so that it wraps/folds around my head to secure me in. CrazyButterfly11@reddit
It sounds great! Thank you for your input! I’m going to look into them again.
ShadowBitch42@reddit
That’s what I use, it’s shorter on one side, so J shaped. It really helps me be supported no matter how much I spin like a rotisserie chicken (never thought that would be my spirit animal, but here we are). I had terrible neck/shoulder issues that seem to mostly have been from too small/unsupportive pillows. I still have to push the stuffing back into place to support my neck properly every other day, because my rotations flatten the center. Back when I had HSA money, I also tried one that was a wedge, with a hole for your arm to go through, and another pillow to stuff in the hole to support your head. It was great for shoulders but didn’t work for my neck.
CrazyButterfly11@reddit
I was originally thinking of getting the one with the arm hole in it, but I’m glad I didn’t now! I definitely need neck support. Thank you for your advice! I bought a knee pillow, but it’s honestly not been doing much. I’ll definitely be looking closer into the different pregnancy pillow types.

I bought a new mattress and pillows this year (John Lewis medium firm mattress with 2 medium soft pillows) - not drastically expensive but not cheap cheap. It's made a world of difference. I spent a year waking up with aching shoulders and collar bone, and now I'm fine.
wyldstrawberry@reddit
What was your previous mattress like? I’m trying to figure out if my mattress might be causing my pain…
AuroraDF@reddit
My most recent one was memory foam. I hated it. I toss and turn a fair bit, and so, my body would make a dent in the mattress, then I would turn over, but the dent would stay, so I wouldn't be able to find a comfy position as I'd be half in half out the previous dent.
I used to have a latex one years ago which I liked, but, I was 20 years younger, and I didn't like it as munch as this.
insomnic@reddit
Not who you asked, but if your mattress is really soft that might be it. I got a medium-firm latex mattress and it worked really well. A few years later, I added a 2 inch foam topper to help with some pressure points with hips and shoulder and it's been excellent. I think my next mattress will be more firm (still with foam topper) as I've learned to sleep on my back with a thinner pillow instead of sleeping on my side and the firm support just feels more comfortable.

For shoulders, hanging from a bar did wonders for me. Hang for 30s and really focus on relaxing the arm and shoulder area while holding on.
SubliminalCorgi@reddit
I lift regularly, and dead hangs are great for the shoulders. Highly recommend.
Hugging a pillow at night also helps, along with alternating sides.
FunboyFrags@reddit
I use a Medcline side sleeping pillow system. It was a little expensive but I absolutely love it.
ShadowBitch42@reddit
I tried it and it works great for shoulders but I could never get the pillow setup right for my neck. Not enough support at the top of the wedge without engineering a stack that invariably didn’t survive the first rotation. 🤷🏼♀️
SoCal7s@reddit
Y’all making me feel so much better. Misery loves company. My shoulders just go numb & hip pain fades with stretching. I have been sleeping on my back with my arm up, hands behind my head w CPap for about 8 months now and that appears to be working overnight. But I have to start out side sleeping, just my natural state.
KindaKrayz222@reddit
Hands behind your head? Nooooo. You shouldn't sleep with your arms above your head.
SnooTigers8871@reddit
Shouldn't is doing some heavy lifting here. I don't do a lot of things that I should. And my shoulder is currently in such bad pain that sleeping with it above my head is the only way I can sleep at all.
KindaKrayz222@reddit
I had heard it was bad. As in raises the likelihood of a stroke. Now I have no idea why this stuck in my head. The way I lay looks like I'm modeling for a chalk-outline for a dead body.

I’m on the younger side of Gen X, but as we speak I’m waiting to meet my new orthopedic surgeon because I have multiple tears in my rotator cuff. No injury, no repetitive motions at work or through exercise, so the best I can figure I caused this by sleeping funny on the couch as a regular habit, and always sleeping on the same side in bed for decades. I’ve also worn crossbody purses exclusively for years and always on the same shoulder. It feels like such a lame reason to probably need surgery but here we are!
Shivs_baby@reddit
I give my side a break sometimes and sleep on my stomach but with a big pillow wedged under one side so I’m more at an angle and not flat on my stomach (which is not good for your back).

Purple mattress, Purple pillow and a second king size Purple pillow for between my legs and arms.
Safe-Count-6857@reddit
Bingo. I have a Purple Classic (no inner springs). This made a huge difference, for me. I’m a back and side sleeper. This style is best for larger/heavier folks. We had a couple of tempur and memory foam mattresses before, but none of those measured up to the Purple Classic. I do use the back sleeper pillow shown above, because it has notches in the side for your shoulder and arms, when I sleep on my side (which is about half the time).
AveryCrow@reddit
I bought this pillow and it's made a big difference for my neck and shoulder pain. Hasn't eliminated it completely, but it's helped. I still rotate from back to left side, right side at night but still, better than before the pillow.
scatcall@reddit
YES! I got this too after getting whiplash from falling on ice. One PT session and two weeks sleeping on this pillow and I was pain free. I'll use it the rest of my life!
AveryCrow@reddit
Honestly didn't expect it to do much and was pleasantly surprised! I had jaw and neck pain that was so "normal" that I forgot it shouldn't be there until it went away. Glad you got some relief, too!
I think my big problem now is that my mattress is too damn firm and that's why I'm still rotating at night. Gotta replace it next.

I had rotator cuff and bicep reattach 11-18-26 and I sleep on my back now mostly flat with one pillow. If I am on my non-surgery side I sleep on side propped up on pillows. I was always a belly sleeper and I have yet to try or sleep on the surgery side.

64 year side sleeper with a bunch of neuropathy, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, one third of C 3-7 removed due to spinal stenosis and central cord syndrome. The only thing that works is lots of THC and CBD, on top of the fistful of VA administered horse meds. The big trick for me is to wait until I’m absolutely sleepy to even head for the bed. Fall asleep in a minute or two, wake up in the morning usually in the exact same spot that I started in. Wife hates that I sleep so deep and restful. I’ve always slept primarily on my right side and that shoulder has torn rotator cuff and labrum. When I was paralyzed in 2014 I was life flighted at 260lbs. Seven weeks later when I was released I weighed 220, all upper body muscle atrophy. Shredded my shoulder during physical and occupational therapy and rehabilitation while on Dilaudid. Orthopedic surgeon said he couldn’t repair the shoulder until the muscle came back to help support things. Here I am 12 years later at 225 and a very painful shoulder and no use of my right arm from the nerve damage. Sleep well friends.👍

I'm a side/stomach sleeper and I've never heard of this before - am I just setting myself up for shoulder issues?
Square-Wave5308@reddit
I don't think side sleeping is the cause. As we age we're more likely to have aches and pains from other causes, and side sleepers will notice the shoulders and hips
keithrc@reddit
I have an extra-firm foam side-sleeper pillow (Coop) and I make sure my shoulder is tucked up under it, not on top of it. Takes some pressure off the shoulder. They'll still bother me some, but not enough to keep me from going to sleep.

stuck_behind_a_truck@reddit
I found some awesome solutions for managing pressure points. First was a latex mattress pad on Amazon (this one)that lived up to its reviews. 2” as enough for me. totally affordable and dreamy.
When I had to replace my mattresses, I found a reactive mattress (this one - super affordable compared to most current mattress prices. While it looks and is sized like a totally normal mattress, reactive mattresses are designed to work on regular or medical beds and thus to keep pressure points (and bed sores) to a minimum.
The only caveat is that, yes, the side does sink down when you sit in it. The edge isn’t firm. But the sleep quality for me makes up for this.
As someone who had a difficult rotator cuff injury (it took a really good sports surgeon to fix it) and who gets severe nerve pain on my left side, both of these solutions have been a godsend.
And to literally tip these off, I use a thick bamboo (for coolness) mattress cover.
As a kid I loved a really firm bed. I’ve definitely gone soft in my dotage!
My guests love my beds and sheets so I’m just going to share for grins. I swear I make no money off this and am not a shill. I’ve just worked really hard on making sure all my beds work for anyone. I don’t like the cheap “who cares” guest bed approach.

i have a flat pillow and a flat pillow that isn't foam but it does meld nicely into my neck and head. i usually lay on my side with my arm straight out above my head like a sandwich meat between the two pillows. please tell me that makes sense (i'm kind of a side stomach sleeper though so). the few times i didn't have something to support where my arm connects to my body (lol this is so crazy to explain), i get sore ass shoulders! so it does work for me! if i could draw a diagram i would.

Gizlby22@reddit
I bought a tempurpedic mattress about 10 years ago and it has been a godsend. No more aching shoulders. I do use a king size pillow so that I can support my neck properly.
FortuneWhereThoutBe@reddit
I used to use multiple pillows. But now I have two body pillows that stay at the head of the bed along that length, and I have a third pillow, just the regular kind, so when I sleep on my side my arm slips between the body pillows. I have that support under my chest and for my head, and then the third pillow goes over that arm and my head lays on it, this also helps with my CPAP mask.
Cheska1234@reddit
I’ve angled up the head of the bed already leaving a v shaped gap at the wall. I stuff a small blanket in it to basically support my arm bending (I have a joint condition so my arm will hyperextend if not supported) pillow over the top and done.
WhichAddition862@reddit
Cervical C5-6 implant. Don’t really recommend it… but it works. I can also still use my arms so that’s a perk. I also box and weight train so even as a woman by traps and shoulders are very supportive. Other than that a pillow that is sunken in the middle so the bottom sits right at my neck keeping it straight.
wengla02@reddit
Got off the statins. Fixed the joint pain.
Turbulent_Table3917@reddit
Wait, statins cause joint pain?
wengla02@reddit
In my case, yes. It's not well studied or documented, but the NIH has one paper out: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2561105/
GoodRX (yeah, not the best source) has a summary article on it: https://www.goodrx.com/classes/statins/joint-pain
In my case there were no changes to diet, exercise, mental or physical condition other than adding statins; I was in daily pain after a couple of weeks. Quit the statins and a week or two later was out of pain and able to return to activity.

Gilly-Gump@reddit
Woke up a month ago with numbness down my arm and half my hand. Still have it and don't have an appointment until July with a specialist. So, apparently not dealing with it well.
Schlopez@reddit
That sounds like a herniated disk… in the cervical spine specifically… get some MRIs
Gilly-Gump@reddit
GP isn't doing a thing? So apparently I will have to wait until the specialist orders them. Would a herniated disc make the numbness change in intensity? Sometimes it's really bad and sometimes it feels like it may be going away but then it just changes again.
Schlopez@reddit
Yea my first symptom was lack of mobility in my right arm, which is more serious and odd it came first. I got a round of steroids, gained mobility, then shortly after had tingling in my hands/arms. The intensity of numbness would fluctuate and would sometimes only be in my thumb, index, and middle finger but it was present pretty consistent. Other times it felt like my arms were asleep.
If this is happening a lot, I’d reach out directly to an orthopedic doctor/surgeon; you’ll get ordered MRI’s way quicker.
Pro tip: If you do get an MRI ordered, don’t go to where they recommend first. Look around for medical imagining practices around where you live and compare prices. They all do the same thing, it’s just cheaper than what the docs initially recommend.
kimberliz@reddit
MRIs to confirm, then a few months of PT helped me avoid surgery...for now, anyway. But bothy pinky and ring fingers on left hand went sporadically numb.
kimberliz@reddit
Yep, just went through this, cervical bone spurs, herniation, narrowing. Pinky and ring finger specifically had numbness/pins and needles.
hardcoreufoz@reddit
Ulnar nerve issue, definitely get it checked out to make sure you don’t have an entrapment. Google ulnar nerve glide exercises can help, there are braces they can give you as well
I seemingly out of no where developed ulnar and medial nerve issues last year, near constant tingling, pain, weird sensations, weakness. 10 months after it started and 3 (very expensive) months of OT later finally starting to make progress. May be somewhat permanent even. Good luck and be patient
Gilly-Gump@reddit
Thanks for the advice on the exercises. Did your tingling move around? Mine started down the bottom of my arm up the side of my hand to my pinky and ring fingers. Tingling/numbness/ weakness still in my arm, but it has moved to the base of my hand and over to my thumb. Pinky and ring finger feel fine now.
hardcoreufoz@reddit
Yep. Mine started in my forearms, felt like bad tennis elbow. Some days it was my hands, wrist, and then eventually moved up into my shoulders. For me it turned out it was a shoulder issues, from sleeping on my side and sitting hunched over at a desk all day.
They will probably do a nerve conduction test, which can localize where the issue is and see if there is a pinch anywhere. Its uncomfortable but worth it. Nerves really suck though, once injured they take forever to heal, and sometimes they just get injured for no evident reason.
Specialist_Stop8572@reddit
Hunh? How does it affect your shoulders??
keithrc@reddit
If you're sleeping on your side, then one of your shoulders is taking a lot of your weight pressed into the mattress.
Specialist_Stop8572@reddit
I dunno, ive side slept my whole life and never felt anything wrong with my shoulders. Maybe it's arm placement?
keithrc@reddit
Oh, I think I see what you mean: I don't think sleeping on your side causes shoulder pain on its own, necessarily, but is the result of injury, arthritis, etc., making it harder to lay on your side without aggravating the other pain.
Koolmidx@reddit

Never thought about it since it's never caused me any pain. Occasionally, I'll wake up with the needles feeling in my hand, but that goes away quickly.

Rule of thumb: back hurts, mattress is too soft; shoulder hurts/fingers go numb, mattress is too hard; neck hurts, change your pillow.

I’m a right side sleeper. Two regular pillows, the slightly thicker/firmer one is bunched between my head and right shoulder, right arm under the big pillow and extended straight out, or both arms curled around my Baguette-shaped pillow, unless my cats wants a snuggle, in which case it’s him my arms are around. the other standard pillow (on top of the shoulder pillow) in the stack is thinner and squishier, goes under my cheek (my cat also lays his head on my top pillow just like a hooman). It’s all a very particular setup which has taken me decades to master.

Create a pit at the shoulder. I use two large dog pillows and my head pillow. I put them in line, with a break at my shoulder. Lay on the pillows and after a couple nights the shoulder rests easy and the pain subsides. Note that I obly do this when I fall behind and the pain returns.
Mental-Artist-6157@reddit
So. Many. Pillows. Some of them were not cheap. I'm hypermobile as is hubs so it had to be done. Firm side sleep pillows for between the legs & getting just the correct height of pillow to fill the space between the head & shoulder for each of us. Also one of those wedge things to fill the space between the top of the mattress & the headboard. It creates an even surface so the pillow lays flat just right, best supports the head.

I bought one of those huge U-shaped pillows, but that just made my neck hurt instead. Still looking for the right pillow but maybe one with armhole will be next, Idk. I started working out my back muscles with small weights too, that has helped some.
Better_Resort1171@reddit
Great post.
I'm a side sleeper with bad rotator cuffs from ball.
A body pillow helps. A quick stretch when pissing helps. It sucks, as I can't sleep in any other position. I couldn't imagine having a wife, I toss and turn all night.
I always look forward to my hot morning shower, to loosen joints up.
Bands at home can help you stretch throughout the day

Me too. One of my kids gave me a pillow just for this purpose from Target’s Pillowfort collection. It’s a long, slightly weighted pillow designed to look like a dachshund. It’s wearing French clothes for some reason though. 😁

Yes!! What sold me on it was there were reviews by men that were like "Ok, so I'm a man and not pregnant, but this pillow...." and I thought I had to try it. It has made such a difference.

twineandtwig@reddit
Trying to figure this one out myself.
I keep seeing an add for an odd looking pillow on here that’s supposedly for side sleeping and shoulder pain. I finally clicked on it and it’s godawfullly expensive.
Looks like they have another one that’s for reflux that’s the same price (still crazy expensive), and I can’t tell if there’s any difference between two.
But again…price. I mean, how much are any of us even willing to pay for something like that?! Maaaybe if there’s a full money back guarantee, but even then, I don’t know.
iideclan@reddit
It's a great pillow. Coop has regular sales and intro percent off. Helps my shoulders a lot.
twineandtwig@reddit
I’ll check it out. Coop isn’t the add I keep seeing though.
The company is called Medcline, and pillows are $250! 😖 But, I guess it is a three pillow system (a wedge, body pillow, and something else). Still.
Looking at it again just now it does say it’s HSA and FSA approved for anyone who has that option. 🤷🏻♀️
iideclan@reddit
Coop is approved too. I paid less than half of that amount.
durhamsbull@reddit
Got a MADS to help with mild apnea. Allows me sleep on my back and I’m grateful case my shoulders are feeling all 53 years of side sleeping.

jaydrian@reddit
I have to change sleeping positions so many times during the night. I prefer sleeping on my back, but due to a back problem, my leg falls asleep from the waist down and vlcan be very painful! A good pillow is a must. Also, of you have a good chiropractor, physical therapist or massage therapist, ask about active muscle release. My shoulder was trashed. I had steroid injections that didn't help. Traditional PT did not help. I finally asked my chiro if there was anything he could do. He presses deeply into my armpit. It was excruciating. But 2 days later I felt so much better. He has did this 2 more times over a year. It's now been about 5 years pain free.
MassCasualty@reddit
Make sure you sleep on your left side if you have normal body structure. It's better for your stomach. Your stomach hangs left. The valve is on the right side. If you lay on your right side, you're putting your digestive juices on the valve that keeps your stomach closed.
SeL-MoGRC@reddit
Not true. Sleep on your right side, and it reduces the likelihood of acid reflux.
Creamandsugar@reddit
My gastro told me to sleep on the left side to help with reflux. It helps.
mzimmer74@reddit
That is not my experience at all. When I was having acid reflux issues, sleeping on my right made it MUCH worse. Sleeping on my left side made it tolerable.
MassCasualty@reddit
That's because you have normal interior structures. Most people sleep on their left to alleviate it.
MassCasualty@reddit
I was literally told by my doctor post endoscopy to sleep on my left side because your stomach hangs left. As it does for most people. After having a scope down my throat and in my stomach, the doctor was able to confirm that the left side is the side I should be sleeping on...

Creamandsugar@reddit
Temperpedic mattress. Get the softest one that is comfortable. I have chronic pain that gets worse with any pressure at all, the only way I could sleep was by upgrading our mattress.
It's expensive, but I have never had an issue sleeping on my side, which is saying something. I do use a pillow between my legs for support or my back can hurt, but honestly, it's the most comfortable I can be.
ImNotAClown@reddit
I swear this isn’t an ad but I got a Coop pillow for side sleepers. It was expensive but I was able to use my FSA for it.
lucy_eagle_30@reddit

I was about to ask you the same, right before I call an orthopedist! The shit thing is that I used to sleep on my back and had to switch to the side during pregnancy because it is safest for the fetus. Then my child would sleep in bed with my husband and me and take up all the room, so I learned to sleep on my side and take up barely any room. That fetus is now nineteen and I have totally fucked my shoulder and neck,

NaughtyLittleDogs@reddit
I had my dominant shoulder rotator cuff repaired last year so now I have no choice but to sleep on my non-dominant side only. All night long, same position...ouch. The key is having a thick memory foam mattress topper, a pillow for my head that can be deformed into the perfect size and shape to keep my neck aligned and a soft bolster pillow I can hug to keep my surgery shoulder lifted away from my body and supported. I do pretty well with those three things but sometimes wake up with a kink in my neck if my head pillow gets too flat.

hkusp45css@reddit
I sleep sitting up, these days.
SaltyBlackBroad@reddit
I started out that way, then eventually bought a wedge pillow and then a "pyramid" pillow for under my knees so that all pressure points are alleviated. I totally get why some people sleep in recliners. There's no substitute for waking up pain free. I was a side sleeper my whole life until sports injuries made it impossible. It took my body just a few nights to accept back sleeping because there was no longer any discomfort. It's not a difficult transition. Sometimes my body will roll to one side *musclememory, maybe), but it doesn't last longer than a few minutes and then the brain remembers the pain. I seriously do not miss side sleeping because it's associated with pain, and my brain recalls and adjusts.

My husband has a body pillow he’s being using for years. He had to travel for 3 weeks and while he was away, I decided to try his pillow. It was better than I ever expected.
For me, the hardest of side sleeping was what to do with my limbs. I don’t like my knees or feeling touching the other. I’m a 5’8” woman and the body pillow is long enough for me to tuck between my feet and knees. In addition, the most important piece is my arms have a place to rest comfortably instead of just hanging awkwardly. Now I have my own pillow.

Rule of thumb: back hurts, mattress is too soft; shoulder hurts/fingers go numb, mattress is too hard; neck hurts, change your pillow.
There are zoned mattresses if you are too complicated for a simple solution. And kit mattresses if you need a trial and error solution (flobeds latex was ours; the individual zones can be rearranged and partners can have different firmness).
aluke000@reddit
I'm not a fan of foam mattresses to help with shoulder as I get too hot in a foam mattress, so I use firm "hotel" pillows that help keep my head aligned and not drooping like with a soft pillow. Went and saw him and he disagreed and said it's not my tendon, it's just frozen shoulder. I started physical therapy and the therapist said it's not frozen shoulder, it's definitely my tendon. Ugh

I've been using this for years...
https://medcline.com/products/shoulder-relief-pillow
Willow_Alley@reddit
It didn't tweak your lower back by being on an incline on your side?
xxDailyGrindxx@reddit
No, it hasn't. That could be due to the fact that I do a lot of lower back exercise (rowing) or that my body hasn't deteriorated enough yet...
lilesj130@reddit
I tried that but I move around too much. Flipping sides completely woke me up because of how you thread your arm through 😞
xxDailyGrindxx@reddit
Flipping sides can be a bit of a hassle, especially since I have a weighted blanket and the leg pillow's only on one side, but it's been worth it for me since I have an old rotator cuff injury.

I sleep on my side because of my neck and shoulder problems.
eeyore102@reddit
I’m a weirdo and can sleep in some seriously improbable positions. I love a good chair nap, for instance, on my side with my feet on the seat in the fetal position. My husband is baffled when he finds me like that.
JinnyWinny@reddit
My husband just completed 20 PT sessions and will continue with the exercises on his own until it stops working because he wants to avoid surgery as long as possible. So, for him, it's specific exercises and about 300 strategically placed pillows.
Colonel_Autumn_@reddit
I have adopted the 3-pillow hat trick. One under my head, one next to me like a teddy bear for the shoulder relief, and one between the knees/ankles. I used to be able to sleep on a slab with nothing in my younger years.
WickedCoolMasshole@reddit
Three things I do but have had nefarious results with:
I have to exercise at least twice a week, otherwise my neck and hips kill me. I do Classical Pilates (am working on my teacher's certification!), but you do whatever feels good when you do it. Exercise at this stage should feel like a reward, not a punishment.
I bought a very, very good mattress (Sleep Number 360 for us).
Purple brand pillows - including one to "hug" and something betwen the knees.
The key is to keep your hips and shoulders stacked and not crumpled. I tried a body pillow, but I'm also going through peri, so found it way too hot. YMMV.

I don't remember it taking long to adjust to either. I started with the knee pillow first to help my back and hips, then a couple years later for the cervical pillow to help with some nerve pain. And then I got the night guard for the teeth grinding, and ear plugs because of someone else snoring. It's a whole deal.

Blew out both my shoulders (and dislocated my thumb several times) in Jiu Jitsu. Got away with only PT and not rotator cuff surgery, but the shoulder pain while sleeping was unreal. Plus I snore like a freight train when I sleep on my back. I tried several of the "miracle pillows" and even kickstarted a few.
The only pillow that has worked and has saved my sleep is Pillow Cube. I use their Ice Cube Deluxe and it's amazing. They have a new Side Cube Riser pillow that I'm considering as soon as they put the Ice cover on it. I live the in the US Southwest and a consistently cool pillow is the bomb.
This is not a paid advertisement for Pillow Cube. They do not endorse my comments. ;p
jackandcherrycoke@reddit
I use two pillow, staggered. My shoulder rests on the bottom edge of the lower pillow. The upper pillow nestles up against the top of my shoulder, and supports my neck.
This keeps my head, neck and shoulder aligned while maintaining comfort.
I try to use a knee pillow as well, but apparently my legs move to much so it doesn't stay in place long. 😔

georgeontrails@reddit
I sleep on my side but not directly over the shoulder: that arm is stretched out ahead of me but below the pillow because my pillow's too flat and I am too cheap to buy another one. I think the result is the same as @Heliotrope88's vampire self-hug.
GalianoGirl@reddit
Instead of the children’s song, “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”, it is shoulders, hips, knees and ankle.
I separated my right shoulder 30+ years ago, I can only sleep on it for short stretches.
Chronic bursitis in both hips, right is worse.
Left knee has a Baker’s Cyst and Torn Meniscus. Right knee is ok.
Left ankle has frequent Achilles Tendonitis.
Add a CPap and 2-3 dogs and three cats, sleep is interesting.
This morning I woke up on my right side in pain, two of the large dogs wedged on either side of me, the small dog on my sore ankle and a cat head butting me for attention.

I woke up one morning with shoulder pinch a cpl years ago. After that I couldn’t raise my arm above my head for 4 months.
What I learned is that my shoulder ligaments were thin and weak, and tore easily. The answer is regular resistance training for the arms and rotator cuff. Dead hang from a bar to open up the shoulders. That works- happy to sleep on my side again now.
Side effects now, I resistance train 2-3 times a week and am stronger and more capable than I was 15 yrs ago.

MissDisplaced@reddit
There are some weird shaped pillows for side sleepers that ease the shoulder pressure.
Round-Public435@reddit
I'm in that group, unfortunately.
Currently a left-side sleeper, but will have both hips replaced at some point this year, so I'm looking at some long stretches of not being able to sleep on EITHER side when those 2 surgeries are done. I'll be sleeping on my back for a while after those are done.
Right shoulder is the one causing a major issue right now, oddly enough. It wakes me at night with severe pain and the only way to stop it is to sleep on my back with my right arm propped on a pillow. So I guess I get to practice sleeping on my back in preparation for the hip surgeries and then figure out what's going on with the shoulder.
Aging is not for wimps.

I had a frozen shoulder (R) for a year and a half from a fall injury..stairs...(it's been healed for nearly a year now) and currently am nursing a shoulder injury (L) from a fall 5 months ago where it dislocated and I popped it back in place. It has since subluxed repeatedly. Since I have a doctor aversion (that is an entirely different story) I didn't get it looked at until last week. Ligaments and tendons are stretched out from all the subluxing. So it's in a sling now. I have become super clumsy since I hit 45. I'm 53 ftr.

I have a large body pillow I hug but I also made sure my neck is supported and I don't curl around my pillow. I deliberately pull my head up and back so I don't get any neck pain. Either I hug my pillow or my arms are straight down my side or at an angle in front of me but nowhere near my head. It's important to pay attention to this because you can hurt your elbows and wrists. I do weight training and I realized when I tuck my hand under my head it strains my elbow so then I experience pain from lifting. Another thing I recommend is learning stretches for your shoulders and neck. We're all starting to hunch over XD.

Pull your bottom arm down, so you don't sleep with your shoulder up near your ear. Made a huge difference for me. And I sleep hugging a pillow to support the top arm. Without a pillow, I'll sometimes put my hand between my knees to keep the shoulder down.

I just got one of those and have been using it for just short of a month. I have been a side sleeper forever but have developed a problem in my neck that makes it so that I have to learn to sleep on my back. My C6 and C7 vertebrae are trying to fuse because the disc in between is trash. I wake up with numb hands/fingers if I sleep on my side with my neck at a weird angle. This pillow seems to be helping even on the nights I end up on my side. Also seems to be better for my shoulder too. It’s not as big length wise as my previous one but that hasn’t been an issue. Little bolster pillow (it’s actually a lumbar roll) to support my top arm / shoulder. Also a lacrosse ball is a great way to work out the knots in your shoulder, back, hips, etc. You can do this in bed (or on a yoga mat, against a wall, on vacation, etc)…indispensable massage tool.
Newb48@reddit
I was always a side sleeper. Physically unable to sleep on my back. Would immediately panic if i laid flat. So I suffered through sore shoulders and numb hands and what the hell do i do with my spare arm??? Then my husband and I bought a split king bed where you can adjust the head and feet independently. It has a setting for zero gravity, which basically raises your head a bit and puts your feet above your heart. Best decision we ever made. Such a comfortable way to sleep and my back doesn't hurt, my shoulders don't hurt and my hands aren't numb. I still sleep on my side for a lot of the evening but having the option for zero G when i need it has changed my sleep.
SnooChipmunks2079@reddit

I spent almost $200 on a goddamn TempurPedic pillow.
It was worth every penny. I’ve had it probably 15 years now. I tried every pillow I could find and finally my massage therapist recommended them. Satin pillowcases keep my hair from getting all tangled so I do t wake up with a dreadloc.
But you might also play around with the angle of your bottom arm.
Several_Bass2436@reddit
My $200 TempurPedic pillow is 25 years old and still going strong. Unfortunately I am not, and am having right shoulder issues from sleeping mostly on my right side. Time for a second pillow I guess.

Tall-Yard-407@reddit
Oh jeez. Right?. My left shoulder is higher than my right when I look at myself in the mirror. There are exercises and stretches I can do to mitigate that but it just seems to snap back out of whack.
One thing I have noticed is that ever since I started using a cpap machine I’ve been waking up on my back. I don’t know if it’s because I think I’m sleeping better or if it’s because that damn hose leading to my face is keeping me from rolling over on my side.

Firm mattress for back support. Three-inch memory foam pad on top for cushioning. My shoulders and hips are so much happier now.

I did add a topper recently. I figured out that the firm mattress was not allowing enough give for the natural body shape. It helped a lot!
BG4Life1970@reddit
I actually prefer sleeping on my back, but due to acid reflux issues I started sleeping on my left side. That eventually caused severe neck and shoulder pain, so I now put a pillow behind me and lay with my right side on it so I'm sort of half way on my side. That has solved a LOT of my shoulder issues and still also helps with the acid reflux.
RW_McRae@reddit
I sleep on my stomach and side. Having a Purple pillow helps for on the stomach, and a square pillow that's the same thickness as my shoulder-to-head. I also spent a shit-ton of money on my bed and mattress topper.
As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate the value of spending money on good beds and good shoes
Terrible-Mind-5414@reddit
I stack 2-3 pillows to raise up my head and create some space for the shoulder. Especially after tearing one rotator cuff, I notice the pressure. I switch sides at least once every night too.
uptownglitterbomb@reddit
The coop adjustable pillow (it has a cut out area for your arm) worth every penny
thirtyone-charlie@reddit
I have to turn every once in a while. Acid reflux plays a role quite often. Both of my rotator cuffs were ruptured in accident back in 2013 and reconstructed over the next few years so that always plays a role. Recent total knee replacement put a big kink in it. Sleeping on my back makes my legs go numb Back and knee injuries are from the same accident. I used a medium pillow and fluff it up for my head and another pillow to keep my top shoulder from rolling over.

keltsbeard@reddit
Hell, as much as I roll around in my sleep, any morning I'm still in the bed and not on the floor is a win.
Fulghn@reddit
Decades ago I bought a 14" thick memory foam mattress. (At the time because it was compressed into a box that fit in my convertible with the top down so I could avoid delivery charges!) I even have a couple inch foam topper over that (again more out of convenience of more regularly cleaning that vs the mattress)
That mattress, solid memory foam pillows(I hate those ripped up foam pieces pillows!) and a full body pillow that I can wrap my legs around helps me sleep longer continuous periods. (For me that about 3 to 4 hours at a time)
I bought a ultalightweight cot for when I go backpacking so I can sleep on my side. I use the sleeping bag more as a body pillow and just use a light sheet over me. So much better and less painful in the morning than sleeping on a ground sleep system.

DataWeaver47@reddit
Yes, exactly this. Now is the time to take very good care of your body, so the elder years aren’t a morass of inability and disability that could have been mitigated or prevented.
Physically, my mother is my guide to what not to do, and her sister - my aunt - is my guide on what to do.
Emotionally and intellectually it’s exactly the opposite: my mom has kept her intellect intact and continues to expand her knowledge and keep her social and emotional connections despite her physical limitations. My aunt stopped reading years ago, watches tv for information, has almost no social interaction and is slipping into dementia and depressed.
So, while we must tend to our bodies, we need to be sure to tend to our minds and our emotional and social lives.

teenbean12@reddit
Originally when I slept on my side I had no issues. Once I hit my 40’s the bending of my elbow caused cubital tunnel (like carpel tunnel in your wrist, but your elbow instead). I still lay on my side, but now I keep my arm straight and above my head when I sleep. That was disrupted when I got frozen shoulder from perimenopause and I ended up being forced to learn how to sleep on my back. All is better now and I am back to sleeping on my side.
I also have a sleep number bed and sleep at somewhat low number so there is not a lot of firmness.
Fishyprediction@reddit

Just let your arm straighten out while sleeping on it, it relives the pressure. dont bend it inward. simple solution. im a chronic side sleeper.

A fine, aged pillow with a lump at one end that I like to rest my head on, a standard sized pillow to put between my legs that supports my feet, all the way to my knees. I use 2 Squishimals under my top arm when looking at my phone (I know, I know but solitaire is my pacifier to get me to sleep). Once I’m ready to actually sleep, I put one Squishima in front of my hips tp support my top forearm but I position that arm so that my elbow extends backwards past my back. Doing this eliminates the hunching of my shoulders and supports better posture.
TLDR:
- Favorite lumpy pillow under my head
- Standard pillow supporting lower leg from ankle to knee
- 2 15” Squishimals to support upper arm while scrolling
- Change upper arm position to pull elbow past the back of your waist to straighten your upper back.
Good luck!

SojuSeed@reddit
I’ll be 47 here right quick. Always been a side sleeper. Haven’t had a problem yet, but I train with heavy clubs and kettlebells, which has my shoulders in excellent shape. Dunno if that’s a reason I’m not feeling anything, but this is the first time I’ve heard that this is an issue for some.
Pielacine@reddit
Interesting. M50, I’ve been getting shoulder pain from running (how I hold myself I think); playing guitar and maybe how I sleep - lifting seems to help but I need to watch how I move the rest of the day - I haven’t explored kettlebell or club (not sure what those are?) movement stuff, just standard dumbbells, barbells, pushups etc.
SojuSeed@reddit
Well, without knowing what ails you, I can’t tell you if it it would fix your problem. I started doing kettlebell training when Covid shut all the gyms down and that is like 90% of my training now. I’m not trying to get jacked anymore, I leave that to the 23-yr old looks maxxers in the gym that can’t stop doing delt raises and posing.
Kettlebells give what is sometimes called functional strength, but that’s a bit of a misnomer. All strength is functional. But they do provide some phenomenal results when it comes to endurance, and, when done properly, give you a rock-solid core. I have a kind of thing with this girl half my age and I have no trouble keeping up with her in the bedroom.
Kettlebells make you strong in how you move day to day, and reset your posture, as well. I used to throw my back out 2-3 times a year doing the bending down to pick up a sock thing, and I can honestly say now that I don’t remember the last time I had back pain.
I started heavy club training when I got frozen shoulder a few years back. I’m an educator and the better part of two decades writing and erasing on white boards had started to cause problems. A few months into heavy club training, and now almost four years on, and I have full mobility and no pain there either.
Check out a guy named Mark Wildman on YouTube. Spend some time digging through his stuff and you might fix whatever is causing you problems.

BandOfBroskis@reddit
I went through this, with incredible shoulder pain from side sleeping, about a year ago. Here's what I figured out and I'm pretty much okay now:
DO NOT SLEEP WITH YOUR LOWER ARM TUCKED UNDER YOUR PILLOW! This puts a lot of strain on your shoulder because it's impinged at a weird angle. Now I just have my arms kinda loosely crossed/folded in front of me when I lie to sleep. IMO, this one change fixed most of my problem.
Instead of sleeping on the point of your shoulder, I roll my torso so I'm sleeping more on my shoulder blade.
Yep, that's about it and with those two I've been much better lately. A little hard to explain but I hope I was clear enough.
Whole-Zucchini-5635@reddit
Dosaze pillow. From the first time using it I woke up with no arm pain.

The trick is to have a pillow that is more vertical behind the pillow your head is on. Instead of having your arm and hand bent under your head in a forced external rotation, let your hand rest on the vertical pillow behind your head.

We buy the right mattress, number one rule. I am a side sleeper with broad shoulders, but I’m not very heavy, especially on top. My mattress was too firm so when I would sleep on my side, my shoulder would curl under me because I wasn’t heavy enough to sink into the mattress. No pillow is going to fix that problem.
Once I found the correct mattress, which was a softer memory foam one that allowed my shoulders to sink in I then found the right loft pillow, which is I need about 5 inches of loft. I use the Coop- Eden pillow. The regular shaped pillow I don’t get the cut out and I don’t get the crescent shape because I have a long neck also and if I get that cut out, it’s like having my head between two butt cheeks.

If you don't have some sort of pathology causing the hip pain (like if you don't need a hip replacement or whatever), clamshells build the muscles supporting and cushioning the hip joints. They're a lifesaver! Start with 10 on each side if you're out of shape and move up to 20 per side per day. It helps so much.

I am ashamed to admit I bought a $200 pillow but as a former 2-pillow person with a herniated disk at the base of my neck, I can honestly say it was worth every penny and I would do it again.

I just wrote how I spent $200 on a pillow. Is it the Purple or is there another brand I need to look into?

I paid - and I can’t believe I’m saying this - $200 for a side sleeper pillow from Purple. But it’s so good. It fixed so much once I got used to it after a week or so.
MamaPajamaMama@reddit
I have a side sleeper pillow too, I don't remember how much I paid for it but it was worth every penny. It has a cooling side which is a must for this perimenopausal body.

I have a purple bed. It really is that good for a side sleeper. I get my regular pillow how I want it between my shoulder, neck and bed and have no aches. It’s the single best investment in my life I’ve made.

I started doing "plank" on the floor for 1 minute every night before bed, followed by a few little stretches. It isn't much, but it has ended the neck, back, hip, and shoulder issues I started getting in my early 40s.
If I skip for a few nights, the pain comes crashing back.

I have two bad shoulders and side sleep with the help of a very firm, supportive, bulky pillow that keeps everything aligned properly.

CPAP stopped my side sleeping. Tore my rotator cuff 15 years ago and in a remarkable unintended consequence the CPAP helped it immensely.
inna_soho_doorway@reddit
I sleep on my side with the mask on, most nights it’s not a problem until it is… For the life of me I can’t get used to sleeping on my back.
JellyfishAngel73@reddit
Been a side sleeper most of my life. Three years ago my (52f) SC joint spontaneously dislocated in the night & doctors told me 'it just happens sometimes'
Besides your back and knee pain, your neck muscles can shorten from side sleeping with your shoulder rolling forward. Mine got so bad that I got the zingers when moving my head back and two of my fingers went numb.
After MRIs and 3 doctors, I found one who thought it was muscular and told me to stretch it every morning and use a foam roller for some PT.
I did this at home at least 2x a day, everyday and it made a world of difference. It took two months of agressive PT at home but it worked. If anyone has tight neck muscles that cause pain in the upper back or neck, make sure you are also stretching the occipital muscles and the sternocleidomastoid.

Cervical neck pillow, rectangular travel pillow between my arms, regular flat pillow between my knees/lower legs. The cervical pillow took several nights to get used to but now it's the only way I wake up without a screaming headache (I have cervical stenosis and a herniated disc C6-7). Some nights I have to move to the recliner we just moved into our bedroom because my neck can't tolerate lying flat anymore.

Proper density pillow for your head and preference. Physio also gave me awesome common sense advice that works; have another pillow against your chest, like hugging it. That pillow keeps your other shoulder from caving in.

It’s been life changing and I haven’t had a frozen shoulder or neck pain since I started using it. Just blissful sleep.
Edit: I know this exact pillow isn’t available but there are many that look the same on Amazon. I did buy the Sidney pillowcase because I couldn’t find that shape anywhere else.

I had a shoulder replacement in 2024, on the side I’m used to sleeping on. Sometimes it’s hard to sleep on that side, and I have to sleep on the other side or on my stomach (the way I preferred to sleep as a child). Immediately before the surgery, it was impossible to sleep on that side.
Seguefare@reddit
A really, really nice down pillow, a soft mattress, and a pillow for my knees.
-Ancalagon-@reddit
Upside down "U" of pillows.
A pillow on each side of me running lengthwise. Double stack of pillows running widthwise for my head.
This lets me tuck my hand/arm between the 2 head pillows and not torque my shoulder.
I use to get cortisone shots for my right shoulder every year or so. Since using the pillow fort things have been fine.
jlselby@reddit
I use a water pillow.
doloresgrrrl@reddit
I had one of those for a while and really loved it, EXCEPT it would heat up from body heat. If I filled it with 3 gallons of water it weighed over 25 lb, so flipping it over to a cooler side was not happening.
Trolkarlen@reddit
I used to stomach sleep but switched to side sleeping. It requires a lot of pillows to properly support your neck. I also hug a pillow to keep from rolling over on my stomach. I also have a small neck pillow to keep from cramping my neck.

Pillow arrangement is key. Tween the knees. Supporting the head to keep the spine straight. Arms wrapped around another one.
Then I freebase melatonin.
Barbarella_ella@reddit
Pillow between my knees and stacked pillows under my head. My face rests on a silk pillow case, but underneath that pillow is another one where the pillow case is cotton, so the silk one doesn't slip around too much. Also, another silk-covered pillow to throw my arm over/around. I switch sides during the night. More than once.
carlcrossgrove@reddit
So glad to hear all this from my cohort. The knee soreness has got me, but also a couple muscle spasms from the leg bones compressing the other leg muscles for too long. Now I know how NOT to arrange my legs. One thing that could just be my flexibility: A hand support pillow: the lower arm can’t be left perfectly flat or it feels hyper-extended (pain & shoulder pressure). So a dedicated pillow holds up my hand & forearm.
Dr_Overundereducated@reddit

PT helped, as did the right pillow. I auditioned a bunch. Has to be just the right height, and fluffy. No solid foam.
mldyfox@reddit
I had rotator cuff surgery in 2007 on my right shoulder, so I rarely sleep with that shoulder down, but otherwise I sleep okay on my side.
When I wake in the morning, though, I'm on my stomach. It's tough to sleep on my back.
I toss and turn a lot, too. Some days I wake up with hip pain, most I don't.
I don't think I've slept well for more than, say, 3 nights in a row, since childhood, if I'm being honest. But it's mostly I've got one of those brains that just won't shut off.

i have a wedge pillow, plus i shift periodically because of my hips. i've found it helps, too, to adjust how my shoulder is situated under me.
Key-Contest-2879@reddit
Yeah, lots of pillows to start on my side. Then I migrate to my back, because of the hips. Then I roll to the other side, because my mouth dries out from snoring. Then back to the first side, because that’s how I sleep best.
ToraFromTheNorth@reddit
Yeah, me too. For me this is muscular. I wake up with really stiff muscles in my shoulders and neck. But I have found relief. When I wake up I spend some time pinching my neck and shoulder muscles. Like this: A firm, but not hard, grip on the muscle between my fingers. Hold for 30 seconds, then let go. I do this with every muscle that hurts. It gives instant relief.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
A soft mattress. For me, firm mattresses hurt my hips.
ceeece@reddit
Pillow top mattress
MovieSock@reddit
I got an ultra-firm high-density foam slab as my mattress in my 30s, and it's still going strong. (Other people have commented that it's one of the more comfortable beds they've been in.) That helps my back, but over time it's been a little too firm for my shoulder.
A year ago or so I added a softer foam mattress topper - and that seems to do the trick. The topper is only a couple inches thick, and has enough "give" for my shoulder - while the thicker ultra-firm slab still has enough support for my back and hips. It's kind of a win-win.

I made my mom a thin pillow specifically for this issue when she visits. I move too much to keep it in place so I was considering making one that has elastic that keeps it attached to me.

Upper-Shoe-81@reddit
Knee pillow. Amazon. I literally had bruises on the inside of my knees and finally got a proper knee pillow — SO nice.

Body pillow or knee “wedge” was a game changer for me. Knees & hips used to hurt, but a body pillow solved the issues.
earinsound@reddit
i am probably 100% a side sleeper, mostly on my right side. i use a fairly flat pillow, but have yet to have any discomfort other than having to wake up and go to work
md_gal@reddit
I can’t. I sleep on my left side until the pain wakes me up and then try to sleep on my right side. I have to sleep on my side to keep from snoring. 😣😣😣
KatieMay0101@reddit
Just like most everyone else, pillows, pillows, and more pillows. I've been putting rotor cuff surgery off for a while now (stubborn Gen-Xer), and have figured out the perfect way for my sleep position. I make a U shape out of 2 body pillows and my 2 regular pillows go under my head. It puts my head in alignment with my shoulder but also allows me to prop one knee up in hopes of combating the hip pains I get.
Now, if someone could tell me how to avoid the sciatic pain after 2 hour road trips I would be forever in your debt!
icedyoga@reddit

Shoulders are fine, its my knees.
I put compression pillow between my knees when laying on my side.
Possibly get a higher pillow to support your head higher and take some stress off your shoulders.
Correct-Doctor8329@reddit
I didn't know side sleeping was supposed to hurt your shoulder. Side sleeper for my entire life, never the slightest issue. Nor do I have issues when I sleep on my stomach. Also I am not in shape in the slightest, maybe my pudge gives extra cushioning?
NotAnotherThing@reddit
I have bo issue with my shoulders. I have a supportive pillow.
NJ2SD@reddit
I hug a pillow and make sure that I tuck my lower arm underneath so that the pressure is on the deltoid rather than the rotator cuff. Years ago, I injured my shoulder weightlifting, and the surgeon told me that it was years of sleeping wrong that caused it to weaken.
ShawnShev@reddit

Same here. Physical therapy has significantly reduced the pain. Getting a smart watch that reminds me to stand and move has also been a game changer.

I can't. Both rotator cuffs have too much damage to allow side sleeping any more
Anonymo123@reddit
laying on my side with pillow between my legs has worked for me. I can't sleep on my back or stomach.. so its side forever. I did tweak my rotator cuff in the gym and that took 6 months to heal.. shoulder problems suck.

Not a shoulder for me really (that only acts up from lifting heavy objects). More my side gets a bit sore after a few mins. I’m a bit of a princess and the pea though as the wife says. Just holding onto a pillow helps me. Plus get something under your feet, like part of the duvet. Helps me

3 pillows. And then flex your lat it will create a small shelf for your side.
HotRush5798@reddit
Pillow to maintain the space between my shoulder and head is the bare minimum. I try not to sleep with my lower arm over my head. Best set up for me was a body pillow (or doubled up pillow) between my knees up to my head, so the spine is neutral and there’s space for my shoulder. Sounds more involved than it is lol.
