As somebody who has purchased 4 new GTIs with manual transmissions over the decades, bring back the manual and I'll come back.
iatekane@reddit
Honestly is possible with the move next year to building all the golf’s back in Mexico. That plant is currently tooled up and producing manual transmission cars, so not unreasonable to thing they can shove them back into the GTI and golf R
KSoMA@reddit
Hope this is the case, the stick is currently only on the GLI but there's also a possibility they make a Mk8 Jetta instead that just has no manual at all.
iatekane@reddit
Yeah I hope so too, I have a GLI it’s been great for the last 7 years, but next car I would upgrade to a golf R, but only if I can get a manual with it.
For what it’s worth VW North America were the ones that pushed for the manual in the MK8 to begin with, so hopefully they can push again for it to come back.
gimpwiz@reddit
I was 50/50 on buying one last year until I found out they were discontinued in manual for 2025. The automatic just ain't it. Local dealer bought all the remaining manuals in the area and stuck a $10k markup on them, but it was pretty damn good other than the price being wrong. Oh well. Ended up buying the civic instead.
TFiPW@reddit
Mk9 R with physical controls would tickle the pickle.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Interesting
If you want to buy petrol Golf, VW will still offer it. ID Golf won’t be current Golf replacement.
Simon_787@reddit
This means the electric model won't be compromised by having to fit an engine, which is good.
Even though selling new fossil cars in Europe around 2030 is not so good.
linknewtab@reddit
They won't. They will just do a second facelift on the Mk8 ICE Golf and call it Golf 9.
Simon_787@reddit
Definitely, but it still costs us in potentially missing emissions targets and puts pressure on the people who buy this thing used later on, which isn't great.
MaybeNext-Monday@reddit
Thing is, sustainable fuel is picking up momentum now. I have a feeling the targets will change accordingly as we approach 2030.
Simon_787@reddit
"Sustainable fuel" is either not scalable, not sustainable or not economical.
It's all bullshit, electric is the only good solution.

You can't beat physics.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
Definitely interesting. The Mk. 4 has always been my favorite looking Golf, specifically the R32.
L3monGr3nade@reddit
Could we get the manual back? Doubt it
quitaskingmetomakean@reddit (OP)
They'll have to find a new manual and didn't want to do that for the number they were selling. Apparently the 8.5 engine has too much torque for the one they were using.
darknecross@reddit
Put the I5 in the Golf you fucking cowards.
epsiblivion@reddit
just make the clubsport available here
aprtur@reddit
Completely agree - have been in a few while visiting friends in Japan, and am dumbfounded that it's not sold here. It's what the diehard VW heads are clamoring for. I can understand why the R Variant isn't sold here, but it's dumb to not slot the CS between the GTI and R in our market.
aprtur@reddit
Been done in the past, at least for the US market, with the Mk5 Rabbit. Not the DAZA beast, but an I5. They're a hoot when boosted.
A_WHALES_VAG@reddit
the Mk5 rabbit wasnt very fast but it sounded great
die-microcrap-die@reddit
I don't care what it's called but give me a R equivalent in EV form.
Ideally with more power than the R and proper physical buttons.
MadUohh@reddit
HertzGenius@reddit
Hava a look at the interiors of ID.3 Neo and ID.Polo. In my eyes, that's quite a good combination of physical buttons and a touch screen. VW definitely hasn't unlearned to design nice interiors.
A_WHALES_VAG@reddit
The new ID3 Neo looks like a very pleasant place to be.
Unfortunately I'm in Canada so i get none of this cool stuff, despite loving hatchbacks.
dinkygoat@reddit
I want an Alltrack EV.
Also all hail the glory of Mk 7.
durrtyurr@reddit
I just test drove a new Mercedes GLB35 (to replace my apr stage 1 Tiguan) and I didn't even leave the parking lot of the dealership because of how much I was annoyed by the UI. Who on earth thought that it was a good idea to allow capacitive buttons on the steering wheel in the exact place that you rest your thumbs?
alien_believer_42@reddit
This is what I want to. It'd be an absolute riot.
bandi53@reddit
The thought of the Mk8 being replaced excites me. What a steaming pile of a once wonderful car.
I’m a VW tech, I’m allowed to say this.
PolarWater@reddit
Downvoted by haptic button lickers.
bandi53@reddit
Legitimately laughed at that. Nice.
DaBanninator@reddit
Nobody outside of a tiny niche market wants a combustion golf anymore.
jse000@reddit
Europe is a tiny niche market I guess
Simon_787@reddit
The market where EV sales are surging due to fuel prices?
Fossil car sales would drop like a rock if CO2 prices properly reflected the amount of damage we are dealing to ourselves, and emissions trading hopes to achieve decarbonization through exactly this mechanism.
Ecks83@reddit
I guess Canada could be considered niche compared to other markets but the GTI and R still sell very well here (around half the US sales but with a tenth of the US population).
Psychedelic_Doge@reddit
How about a mid range model in Canada? GTI and R are nice but I’d like a more affordable trim
iatekane@reddit
Well, when golf production moves back to Mexico next year that might happen as they could sell them at a price point people would pay.
That’s opposed to the current situation of building them in Germany and being imported, which is $$$
bandi53@reddit
No, no… we want more soulless crossovers with awful build quality! (apparently)
LheelaSP@reddit
I'll remain sceptical, VW hasn't put out a single really good looking car in recent years, and the Mk4 is an insanely high bar to clear.
Blackraider700@reddit
Put a 1.9tdi in it
drags_@reddit
Wish they would bring back the 2 door for the golf R, that would be a day one order for me.
aprtur@reddit
Very interesting (and promising) to hear it's going to be inspired by the Mk4, but I can't help but feel like it's a bit of a missed opportunity. Giugiaro is getting old, and this would've possibly been the last chance at bringing the Golf full circle and asking him to do a modern design for them. How wild would that have been??
RiftHunter4@reddit
In my eyes, every Golf since has been generically based on the mk4 design.
QazGod@reddit
True, I mean manufacturers constantly say designs draw inspiration from past vehicles but I generally find that they really don't besides a few small details? Only a few actually go all the way with it imo like the new Z. That being said all the golfs definitely have followed a similar formula since the mk4 but I wouldn't get my hopes up that it actually really looks like it.
Hustletron@reddit
The mk4 and mk7 are gorgeous
MK 5 and mk6 were distinctively different
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I thiunk the MK8 was a very solid design as well, but yeah the 5 & 6 definitely suffer from that whole mid 00s-10s era of generically boring looking cars.
I'm excited, the 4 is a fantastic design - update that to modern sizing and you might have a great looking car. I've considered a GTI as a daily a few times over the years, too bad they got rid of the stick.
bullyXLdisrespector@reddit
The mk5 and mk6 at least look they aren't hiding their true shape, the mk7 has the excessive post-2010 surfacing that makes it look like if you flattened out all the body panels, you'd get a car that actually looks much fatter and disproportionate. Which you would.
Low-Umpire236@reddit
Long live Mk7.
bikedork5000@reddit
The Mk8 Golf R is sooo close to being just about perfect. I hope they do a nice styling refresh but otherwise just address the shortcomings in the interior and some mild tweaking of the hardware.
SnowDucks1985@reddit
Interesting, I wonder what this means for the GTI and the Golf R. Is the performance/range is there, I’d be interested in an electric golf ngl
imped4now@reddit
A modernized Mk4 has the potential to look amazing. The Mk4 is still my favorite Golf gen, aesthetically.
Too bad the Mk9 will be auto-only, though.
Dangerous-Sock-3688@reddit
Heck yeah! The MK4 is a nice, timeless design. I think they still look great nearly 30 years later.
