Sperm whales are the most majestic whales. The way they have been seen sleeping vertically is haunting. The way it looks. I wish I'd be able to see , with my own eyes a sperm whale or a hump back before I die.
Come on now. It's phrases like these that threaten shark populations the world over, and reinforce the stereotype that sharks suffer from. The shark wasn't being aggressive, you'd know if it was by its posture. Yes oceanic white tips are naturally curious and definitely not to be trifled with, but to say the diver would be dead without the help of the whales is hyperbolic at best and downright nonsense at worst.
No, they couldnât. The commonly cited volume level of 236 dB is measurement in water, and is nowhere near as energetic as 236 dB on land. I think the whale might be able to kill you if you sat on its nose for a long time while it continuously clicked at maximum volume, but just being a few meters away would dramatically reduce potential damage.
I wonder if the whale was looking out for a creature they can tell is weak and vulnerable in an environment so clearly not its own...or if it was just screwing with the shark for the love of the game. "Hey douchebag, you thought you were getting to eat? Bitch, you thought."
I fully believe whales are equally as smart and as sentient as humans at this point, possibly even more so. I think they can tell we're just sort of quirky little friendly mammals who are just as socially and emotionally complex as they are and also very vulnerable in water, and I like to think some of them are as fond of us as we are of them.
I honestly would not be surprised to learn that whales have noticed "sharks are dangerous, divers are not" and knew to protect the little diver from the shark lol
can we just stop anthropromorphising non human animals dawg like omg, cetaceans are incredibly smart and im sure over time can bond with caregivers/frequent visitors but a wild sperms whale almost certainly sees you as just some weird lookin thing just swimming about, not as the conscious animals we are. This whale was probably annoying this shark just to do it, maybe it was scanning it, hunting it, idk.
Iâve seen this before and think the conclusion is clickbait. There is no evidence that sperm whales ever try to protect anything other than familiar sperm whales and calves. The sperm whales may have just been swimming around, or perhaps they wanted to eat the shark (which they sometimes do).
Theyâre my favorite shark but easily a shark I wouldnât want to find myself too close to. Itâs not their fault, theyâre the product of their environment. So freaking beautiful though.
Well, a fair few people have swum fairly close, including closer than in the video, to sperm whales and not become deaf. With that said, I've heard that at "max volume", their clicks and other sounds can do some damage to human insides, probably including hearing. I don't know of any cases of this or studies proving it, but I also haven't looked very hard.

Where's the divers in this though?

Pretty shark though. I mean if you were going to get eaten by a shark, a pretty one would make it a little better, right?

Oceanic Whitetip, easily the most handsome shark out there & the most aggressive/tenacious.
What a cool capture!

Given how powerful their sonar can be, they could have just blasted him.

Huh. For some reason I thought they were louder. TIL.

And the diver?
Equality_Executor@reddit
It's directional. Look at the shape of their skulls - the back kinda resembles a satellite dish.

Beautiful.

dont get dramatic. sharks dont kill people.

Can we use AI for cool things like analyzing dolphin and whale sounds to try to find communicative patterns?

They're already doing it, it's been a years-long project.

I like to think it was both - first whale was being altruistic, second whale was love of the game lol.

Curious, would the whaleâs sonar clicks be enough to deafen a person swimming that close to one?
