1976 should count as a xennial

I think bicentennial babies should be part of the xennials. We have no recollection of the 70s our first 3 to 4 years were in the 70s I was 4 when it turned 1980 and my childhood and teen years was all though the 80s until I became and adult in the late 90s. I share all the same experiences as a xennial and all my memories are rooted in the 80s and 90s
gangofone978@reddit
Good lord, people on the younger or older cusp will always share some cultural touchstones with other generations.
Logical-Cherry9395@reddit
So they key thing about Xennials is their youth years. It was the first group of kids to go to school with computers and the last ones to graduate without Social Media and smart phones. While we were in school, the entire world changed, leaving us with a unique ability to easily navigate both worlds. THAT'S why Xennials are unique from other Cusper Generations.
gangofone978@reddit
Your response does not at all relate to the OP’s original point.
Logical-Cherry9395@reddit
Pretty sure somewhere in the community rules it says there's no hard age ceiling, although I will admit I raise my brow at my sister saying she's Xennial at 1990, and I'd probably raise my brow at anything below 76....75 would be stretching it.

Ultimately it just depends on who you identify with the most. Usually 1976 falls into Gen X territory, and technically I’ve been told so does 1979, but I absolutely do not identify with Gen X at all. On the flipside, I don’t identify completely with millennials either. I’ve always felt like I’ve had 1 foot in each. I was the youngest of three growing up, and both of my older siblings are absolutely Gen X.
Ever noticed how Zen’s tend to be fantastic technical support agents? That’s because they understand the technology, but they know how to translate that understanding to the older generations who don’t get it. For example growing up I was the only one in the house who knew how to set the VCR clock and set the TV settings, so my parents were constantly calling me into the living room to fix something they did on the TV, and it was usually just a matter of pressing one button to undo whatever it was.
Repulsive-Branch-740@reddit
This is an excellent observation. I’ve been surprised at the amount of tech support I’ve had to provide to colleagues in then 20s who seem to have no idea how any tech actually works (and therefore have a hard time troubleshooting problems when they occur). They are too accustomed to everything “just working” so don’t know what to do when something doesn’t.
Exciting-Argument-67@reddit
I think Xennial is a subset of either Millennial or X. You and I are definitely Gen X, but we're the Xennial flavor of Gen X. Others here are definitely still Millennials, but they're Xennial Millennials, to be more specific. Most graphs don't recognize these micro generations, so when the choices are only Boomer, Gen X, Millennial, Gen Z, and so forth, you and I still have to call ourselves X. It's not like we can say, "Well my generation isn't on this list." (Unless, like many graphs, Gen X is left off altogether.)
worksnake@reddit
<Xennial is a subset of either Millennial or X.
I've always felt this way, too. Kind of like a hybrid plant or animal isn't its own thing, it's a subset of the parental taxa. I actually love the metaphor now that I typed it and I have to hold myself back from extending it more and more.
deadmonkeyboy87@reddit (OP)
I feel you the only that hasn't changed for me is I have been able to keep up with today's tech so I don't need my kids to do it for me it more me showing them.

I hang out here but you already said it, we are in our own special category of Bicentennial Baby

I was born at the end of 76 and was in the same grade as my xennial friends

We’re not checking internet ID’s, my dude.
deadmonkeyboy87@reddit (OP)
I'm not saying any one is my whole argument is the intal year for xennials should really start at 76 I think 77 is a year to late and leave those like me shoved into a group we don't belong with.
hamburgler26@reddit
The whole point of Xennial is people that don't identify with X or Millenial, nobody here gives a fuck if you're 76 or 86. Come on in and let's meme and talk about getting old and how fucked we all are!
seriouslysocks@reddit
Don’t even worry about it. I’ve got a new tattoo gun and I’m giving free practice tattoos in my basement. Come on over!
kg51113@reddit
Then 75 people would say it applies to them and 84 people wouldn't want to be left out either. There have to be guidelines just like the regular generations. People born in 1970 are closer to the experiences of those born in the late 60s but they're not 60s babies. There's always going to be people just outside the guidelines who feel like they should be part of the group in question.
As far as this sub, we don't care if you were born in 76.
MutantSquirrel23@reddit
You belong where you say you do. Generational divides are generalizations. Everyone's life experience is different and can't be shoved into a box. You could say you're '72 and a xenial and everyone here would say 'welcome'.
DontEatThePorridge@reddit
I'm 75 and I consider myself a xennial. Mostly because it's more about being on the cusp of analog and digital which we definitely were.

Brother, the problem is you were 20 in 1996.
ResponsibilityIcy187@reddit
a very strong, gen x leaning xennial but sure. come on in…
ColoradoAfa@reddit
I’m ‘77, and I more identify with things said on the GenX Reddit (but there are occasionally things said that are before me); however, about 30% of the Xennial posts here really hit home and I’m enjoying this Reddit too (just arrived a few days ago) - maybe there should be a mini-mini generation that is in between X and Xennials?
absentlyric@reddit
You were out of highschool for 5 years after Columbine, you had access to affordable college before predatory student loans, you had access to a job market and were able to establish yourself before the Great Recession. You'd have been 30 when Myspace peaked in 2006.
You would've been out of the military and going to Iraq before 9/11.
You grew up and became an adult and graduated college in a time before Millennials even started high school.
Im not trying to discount your experiences, but your experiences are more shared with Gen X than Millennials by far, Xennials fall in the middle with blurred lines.
jar36@reddit
some start it at 1975. I know that I've always fit in best with those a few years younger than me. Oldest child, held back a bit by first time parents
kg51113@reddit
Who starts it at 1975? People in general or some official type of publication? Every definition I've seen is 1977-1983.

You specifically talk about being a bicentennial baby. It took me a while to figure out what you meant by that. But then I'm not American so my experience is different from yours. And that's kind of the point here, you're not within the "definition" of Xennials but who cares? Your experience growing up is so much more important and will be vastly different than other 1976'ers. So welcome, you are officially a Xennial if that's where you feel the most at home!
worksnake@reddit
You’re proposing that the sub sidebar be changed? Or that anyone reading this alters their internal idea of xennial birth years? I don’t understand posts like this. There’s no government ID requirement to post. You don’t have to prove your birth date to share a relevant anecdote or memory. Just be here, and do the thing, and nobody will say anything. The weird part is asking people to discuss it.
deadmonkeyboy87@reddit (OP)
No I'm saying the start year really need to be moved back to 76 seriously how is someone who is 3 in 79 really a gen x I don't relate to them at all and honestly I'm sick of being grouped into a group where I feel like the odd man out with a label ech generation uses to identify with and here I am with all the memories of a xennial but forced into a group I do not relate with at all.
queenofcaffeine76@reddit
Bicentennial baby here too and I agree. I have zero memory of the 70s. My childhood was 80s and 90s. When most Gen Xers talk about their days of partying/traveling/graduating, I was in like second grade. I literally never saw a smoking section in a school. Vinyl went by the wayside for cassettes by the time I was 5. I'm honestly a little surprised by some of the comments here, because most members here aren't so gatekeep-y.
Qurrah-Tun@reddit
At the time of me doing this reply, your comment is 22 mins old, and I looked at every other comment on this post before replying.
There is/was ZERO gatekeeping going on! Not one single person said anything about 76ers not being able to belong here. Most replies are along the lines of "It's all made up anyway. We don't care, so why do you?"
The only gatekeeping happening here exists solely in yours and OPs heads.
worksnake@reddit
Gatekeeping is one of those terms that’s almost entirely lost its meaning. People want the emotional oomph of feeling righteously indignant they were wronged, but don’t want to wait until something actually bad happens.
Elegant_Tie_3036@reddit
I think they’re surprised it’s a question perhaps. I see your point. While I can’t change everyone’s mind, if you want to call yourself one, by all means! The group basically made itself up anyway. 😆
kg51113@reddit
We didn't create the guidelines so we can't change the definition. If you want to chill here because you feel like you fit, nobody cares that you were born in 1976.
Exciting-Argument-67@reddit
I think they're just riffing, or "making conversation." It's not that serious.
theMightBoop@reddit
I was born Dec 76 so I am counting myself as Xillenial.
I think it has to do with the cartoons and toys growing up and being in High School in the 90s that give us the shared experience.
The GenXers had turned into boomers and I just don’t identify with their attitudes.
kg51113@reddit
*Xennial not to be confused with Zillennial which is Millennial/Gen Z cusp.
59apache01@reddit
It's all relative. The way I grew up in southeastern KY, I almost feel like I should be part of the Silent Generation even though it ended about 32 years before I was born!

Why do you have to remember anything from the 70s to be GenX? You were still raised in the zeitgeist of the 70s fir the first 4 years of your life. You're GenX, buts it's cool... you can still hang out with us
Exciting-Argument-67@reddit

FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Xennial is not a generation but a state of mind
Kade7596@reddit
imo the only real requirement is an unabashed, and in fact proud, attachment to an excellent childhood
OneHumanBill@reddit
Gen Jones had it pretty good too, mind you. Just differently than us.
taleofbenji@reddit
Definitely can qualify depending on your childhood.

Got to have a cut off somewhere, unfortunately 76 didn’t make the cut. But you can pretend I guess.
