spent 3 months researching macbook m5, bought a thinkpad p14s (32gb/1tb/ryzen 7) for ₹75k in 40 minutes because i texted one random vendor. my entire life is a lie.

okay i need to tell this story because my brain is still buffering
been on linux for 6-7 years now. started with this absolutely cursed i5 3rd gen desktop with 32gb ram (don't ask). then moved to an hp zbook firefly 15 g8 with 16gb ram 512 ssd about 5 years ago (later upgraded to 32gb ram and 1tb ssd). absolute workhorse. loved that machine.
until it started dying. battery's completely dead. thermals are fucked - hits 95°c opening chrome. hinges loose. keys sticky. fans sound like a jet engine. it's over.
so naturally i started looking for a replacement. and like every other tech person having a mid-life crisis, i convinced myself i needed a macbook air m5.
i went DEEP. i'm talking full psychopath mode.
watched every youtube review. mkbhd, dave2d, even random 2k subscriber channels. read every reddit thread comparing m4 vs m5. made a notion document titled "macbook decision final". built a google sheet with pricing breakdowns. had 20+ chrome tabs permanently open with comparisons, calculated education discount vs regular pricing. knew which shade of macbook i wanted.
spent three entire months doing this.
i knew 8gb base model was a trap. needed 16gb minimum, probably 24gb for headroom. and 512gb storage because 256gb is a joke. so my target config was air m5 15 inch with 24gb/1tb which comes to ₹1.89L.
i'd convinced myself it was worth it. "it's an investment" i said. "battery life alone justifies it" i lied to myself.
was literally going to order it this week. had my card ready. just waiting for the right moment.
then yesterday this happened.
i have this IT vendor contact saved in my phone. not a retail store, these guys do bulk corporate sales. laptops, desktops, networking equipment for companies. bought a monitor from them once like a year ago. kept the number saved. that's it.
so yesterday i'm sitting at home, probably procrastinating the macbook purchase for the 50th time, and i randomly think "wait do these guys even sell thinkpads?"
i've always liked thinkpads, used T480s and T14 before, loved the keyboards, loved the build quality. just never considered buying one personally because i was in full macbook mode.
so i text him. super casual.
"hey man, you guys have any thinkpads in stock or just dells and hps?"
10 minutes later he replies.
"yeah we have some models. what specs are you looking for?"
"idk, 16gb ram, ryzen 7 or i7 maybe? something decent, nothing crazy"
"let me check inventory, i'll send you what we have"
cool whatever. not expecting much. probably overpriced or old gen stuff.
15 minutes pass. phone buzzes.
he sends me an actual inventory spreadsheet. model numbers, specs, quantities, prices.
i'm scrolling through it half-interested.
dell latitude something - meh
hp elitebook whatever - pass
thinkpad T14 gen 3 - okay but old
thinkpad E16 - too big
then i see it.
buried in the middle of the list like it's nothing:
Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 (AMD)
Ryzen 7 PRO 8840HS (8C/16T)
32GB DDR5 RAM
1TB NVMe SSD
Qty: 3 unit
Price: ₹75,000
i stare at my screen.
read it again.
₹75,000.
seventy five thousand rupees.
for 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, ryzen 7.
i immediately google the model. this exact config goes for ₹1.4-1.6L new on lenovo's website. even refurbished units are ₹1.1-1.2L minimum.
my hands are literally shaking.
i call him immediately.
"bro what's the deal with this P14s? is something wrong with it? why is it this cheap?"
he laughs. "nothing wrong yaar. it's excess inventory. we had a bulk deal with a company, they took most of the order but didn't need all the variants. we're sitting on a few P14s models they didn't want. just trying to move them, they've been taking up space."
"so it works fine? like completely normal?"
"yeah completely fine. still sealed actually. we just need to clear warehouse space."
i'm having an out of body experience at this point.
i have 20+ tabs open about macbook specs.
i have a notion document titled "macbook decision final".
i've spent 90 DAYS researching every detail.
and this man just casually sent me a spreadsheet with a laptop that has:
4x the ram of base macbook (32gb vs 8gb)
4x the storage of base macbook (1tb vs 256gb)
comparable performance (8840HS trades blows with M3, definitely beats M2)
for HALF the price of my target macbook config (₹75k vs ₹1.89L)
my brain is completely frozen.
because here's the thing that's really fucking with me: i'm a linux guy.
i've been using linux for 6-7 years. i know apt-get in my sleep. my .bashrc is a work of art, i've refined over years. my muscle memory is built around i3wm keybindings.
why the FUCK was i even looking at macs???
i think i got caught up in the hype, the marketing, the "ecosystem". the "it just works" narrative. the battery life reviews. the build quality praise.
i would've spent ₹1.89L to fight the OS into feeling like my ₹75k thinkpad with linux out of the box.
so i said it.
"bhaiii book kar de. i'm taking it."
"sure, you can pick it up from our office whenever you want"
"i'll come this weekend"
transferred ₹25k advance. got confirmation.
sat back.
looked at my 20 macbook tabs.
closed them all.
deleted the notion doc.
closed the google sheet.
and just... laughed.
the specs for anyone wondering:
CPU: Ryzen 7 PRO 8840HS (8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.1ghz)
GPU: Radeon 780M integrated (actually decent)
RAM: 32GB DDR5-5600
Storage: 1TB NVMe Gen 4 SSD
Display: 14" WUXGA (1920x1200) IPS, 400 nits
Weight: \~1.4kg
Ports: 2x USB-C (40gbps), 2x USB-A, HDMI 2.1, ethernet, audio jack
Battery: 52.5Wh (realistically 6-7hrs)
Keyboard: classic thinkpad with trackpoint
pros:
32gb ram means i can run docker + VMs + local LLMs without babysitting htop
1tb storage (no external drive juggling)
saved ₹1.14L (that's insane money)
ryzen 7 8840HS is genuinely fast for multicore work
native linux support (debian goes on immediately)
thinkpad keyboard (if you know you know)
actual ports (no dongle hell)
can upgrade SSD later if needed
cons:
battery won't match macbook (6-7hrs vs 15hrs)
not as "premium feeling" (but after 5 years with a zbook honestly i don't care anymore)
slightly thicker/heavier than macbook air
no macos ecosystem (but i don't have iphone/ipad anyway so...)
My wife is definitely going to ask why I have another black slab of plastic on my desk!
i threw away 3 months of research in 40 minutes
so now i need you guys to tell me:
did i just hit the enterprise liquidation jackpot or am i missing something obvious?
is the P14s Gen 5 AMD variant actually good? i know regular thinkpads but never used P series specifically
am i coping or did i genuinely make a better decision than the macbook?
why did i spend 3 months researching macs when i'm literally a linux user? like genuinely i need therapy for this
is having random vendor contacts saved in your phone the actual life pro tip here?
picking it up this Saturday. will take photos, run benchmarks, install debian, and report back.
if this turns out to be some elaborate scam i'll update this post and accept my public humiliation.
if not, i accidentally discovered that the secret to good laptop deals is:
use linux for 7 years
almost buy a macbook
text one (1) random vendor you bought a monitor from once
profit???
i'm aware i sound completely insane. i'm having a full crisis about my decision-making process. but also: 32gb ram for ₹75k.
debian with gnome is going on it the second i get home. boring and stable. i'm too old for arch.
Anyway, just wanted to vent because my brain is still fried. Wish me luck for Saturday

I'll save you the google search. 75000 indian rupees is 800 dollars.
Savings-Key8533@reddit
₹1.89L
And what is this? Not necessarily in dollars, just in... numbers.
okktoplol@reddit
I don't know
debackerl@reddit
Wow, that was a nice story, you got me hooked until the end 😂
cla_ydoh@reddit
tl;dr.
rursache@reddit
OP got another laptop that initially wanted
a mbp m5 would have been better but weak hands got the nipple laptop
Avaqen@reddit (OP)
Weak hands...maybe, but my wallet is heavy like rather have 32 gb ram and the 'nipple' for 75k inr (800 usd) than pay double for a Macbook Air
PVT_Huds0n@reddit
What are the chances OP actually needs a laptop with these impressive specs?
apt-get, lol

You’re making the typical mistake of comparing apple devices to their competitors on paper. This is also case wiegt any iPhone vs Android as well, maybe even moreso.
My M3 Pro MacBook with 24GB RAM will easily keep up or even beat my Ryzen with more cores and threads, 64GB DDR5, 4090 Desktop PC, depending on the task I need to do. The only exception being situations where I actually need to load 32GB of data into RAM and keep it there.
Not saying it’s a bad purchase, but you can’t really compare them the way you did.

good read. has my brain rotted enough to fully understand this?

Please convert to an actually understandable currency.

lol, if you even want a macbook - think again
