Men who don't have to wear uniform to their job, what type of clothing do you wear and where do you buy it?

Basically title. I work in an electronics manufacturing role and my uniform only consists of a works hoody/fleece and their company polo shirts.
I've started enjoying wearing Carharrt trousers but god are they expensive. Does anyone have other similar recommendations from similar brands that are easier on the wallet.
Confident_Yak_1411@reddit
If you are in an assembly role, surely a pair of works trousers from screwfix/toolstation with all the pockets/belt attachments makes sense?
When I did a production role back in the day I couldn’t imagine working without them. They’re great for keeping Allen keys/hand drills etc in, and look pretty good with work boots and a polo. Plus it doesn’t matter if they get dirty.

Inb4 uniqlo mass advertising campaign
Lessarocks@reddit
Yes. The covert marketing by them is so obvious.
YarrlieThePirate@reddit
It’s honestly embarrassing and genuinely frustrating
WinkyNurdo@reddit
I used to wear jeans, boots, tshirt, shirt sleeve shirt, overshirt. Basically my everyday wear; I favour a heritage atyle with no synthetic materials. I now work from home … so tshirt and shorts, and comfy woollen slippers.
Orc_face@reddit
Check out an army surplus store, they do Ripstop fabric cargos/combats in a range of colours like Navy, Black, Taupe as well as the obvious camo patterns.
Some are good quality and have the useful pockets
They will also possibly do a range of carpenters trousers
They are usually double stitched, hard wearing and comfortable enough
And for the price of a pair of Carrharts you can get 3-5. Pairs of trousers

Band t shirt and jeans. Baseball cap in summer.
I'm a software developer
nfurnoh@reddit
Yep, I’m a tester so wear jeans and t-shirts too. Bands or sci-fi related.
NotAProperAccount3@reddit
I might even whip out the shorts in the summer. Jeans the rest of the year though.
Legitimate-Soil7109@reddit
Oh I absolutely whip out the shorts too! Got to show off these pasty legs at every opportunity
SmugglersParadise@reddit
Office worker, I'll wear T-shirts and jeans, with a quarter zip in winter. Just jeans and a T-shirt in summer
Just after COVID I got a 10 pack of T-shirts from asos for about £70, which I thought was an absolute bargain! Sadly those T-shirts now need replacing. And I can't find anything which compares value wise. I'll probably end up going M&S
nick_gadget@reddit
I bought a pack of 5 T-shirts last week to replace some I got just after Covid too. They were from m and m direct for £35. They’re French Connection but they only have a tiny crest that’s not obvious and the quality’s great - a bit thicker than normal t-shirts. Would recommend
SmugglersParadise@reddit
Oh fair enough, I'll check them out
Always forget about M&M
hyper-casual@reddit
90% of my wardrobe is from vinted now.
I just wear whatever plain black shorts I like the of, ideally with zip pockets.
For T-shirts I usually just search dickies, carhartt, Adidas, and vans and just pick up ones that look fairly plain.
Occasionally get a hoody or jumper from the same brands but I'm too hot 90% of the time.
Amositey@reddit
Scruffs and Primark
dbltax@reddit
I generally just stick with jeans and t-shirt / overshirt in my workshop.
crsj@reddit
Dockers chinos, Carharrt polos
datguysadz@reddit
(Outdoors worker) In 2020 or 2021, Dickies were shutting down their workwear section (bizarrely) and had everything available at a knockdown price. I bought four pairs of their trousers for what one pair should've cost. They're incredibly well made and are still good as new 5/ 6 years on.
I switch to Dickies shorts in the summer, which are not as high quality, but still good.
For tops I usually just get plain black t-shirts from somewhere like primark or Amazon. Cost about £2 each or something.
vipros42@reddit
Dickies shutdown their UK operation. My BIL was pretty much responsible for disposing of the last of the stock and the warehouses and stuff.
datguysadz@reddit
Get his hands on anything good? I regret not buying more.
vipros42@reddit
A bit of stuff. He's very utilitarian so didn't want much. We've got a few branded wooden crates out of it which is weird. He's had to fire people for nicking stock or samples and ebaying it from there and other jobs though, so not quite as simple as just taking what was hanging about.
Roofless_@reddit
Smart casual Mon-Thus, Friday is a bit more relaxed.
Avenger1324@reddit
During an interview I asked about dress code and was told Mon-Thurs is suit and tie, but Fri is dress down day. You could remove your tie. Really letting themselves go!
BillyJoeDubuluw@reddit
I wouldn’t quite say I don’t have a uniform, but because I work for myself I suppose I’ve chosen my own…
One brand that is markedly cheaper might be Portwest… it’s not trying to make a fashion statement and, to be honest, depending on exactly how physical your job is there’s not going to be much difference in how quickly they disintegrate… I’ve bought a few bits and pieces and had no issues…
Just one thing though, if you’re employed by them and not contracting for them why aren’t they buying you a pair of work pants? It seems a bit tight…
SunShineKid93@reddit (OP)
Because we can wear jeans and whatever we want. I'm just choosing to wear those. Some days I wear jeans, some days I wear shorts.
BillyJoeDubuluw@reddit
Do you have to wear safety boots?
SunShineKid93@reddit (OP)
Nah no safety boots. Can wear what we want on our feet (within reason).
Western-Caregiver897@reddit
What are work pants?
BillyJoeDubuluw@reddit
These things you wear in case people don’t particularly want to see your arse and your balls while you’re moving and handling.
Hope this helps 👍
Western-Caregiver897@reddit
Underwear? I don’t agree that your employer should be buying your underwear. Perhaps I’ve led a sheltered life.
Interesting take.
Lopsided_Snower@reddit
having to wear a company t shirt / hoody, sounds like a uniform to me
chronicbint@reddit
Jeans, t-shirt/hoodie
Kvark33@reddit
shirt and tie, chinos, blazer/jacket
rockdecasba@reddit
I actually quite like the parkside Lidl trousers. Good quality used jeans off vinted like wrangler, Lee and Levi's. Mountain warehouse and Trespass are good. Regatta work wear good as well
DrH1983@reddit
I work in an office, in recruitment for a large corporation. I don't have any specific clothes for work.
I just wear jeans and t shirt. If I need to dress smarter still just wear a casual shirt.
Frequently wear shorts in the summer, hoodies in winter, and often have graphic and band t-shirts.
Popular-Tap5549@reddit
Suit - Roderick Charles
No_Preference9093@reddit
I used to dress well for the office but I’ve got increasingly lazy and now it’s basically jeans and a a tshirt and trainers. If I had important meetings I’d put on a shirt and lose the trainers.
Big_Cheese16@reddit
I work in a warehouse - I got mine from Amazon - no special brand and they are great. Stretchy too to save the classic ball rip. They are less than £20 to iirc.
gaspoweredcat@reddit
easier on the wallet? sorry no but if you ever want some options thatll make carharrt feel cheap by comparison give me a yell
RevellRider@reddit
The extent of my uniform is a branded t shirt.
I work in retail, and this time of the year it is usually and outdoorsy brand of shorts (Rab/Patagonia/North Face) and trail running trainers
TheNotSpecialOne@reddit
Work from home so wearing whatever i want. The office is relaxed too. I seen people wear shorts. But most wear smart casual. I work in IT
jayphelps57@reddit
Bespoke suit, grey sharkskin, white shirt, polished black oxfords made in England. A selection of narrow club style ties. I wear pants under my trousers….
michalakos@reddit
M&S cargo trousers, T-shirt, hoodie.
The M&S cargos are amazing but they only come in 2-3 colours which I personally don’t mind since I can wear bright t shirts and hoodies to throw some colour in.
Adventurous-Dog-3786@reddit
I buy Tesco’s cargo trousers for work. £20 a pair , comfortable and seem to last a reasonable time.
Obvious-Water569@reddit
My current job is really relaxed.
In previous roles I've worn chinos and an open collar shirt. Usually from Next or M&S.
These days I wear jeans (Levi 501), a t-shirt and Vans.
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
Canvas trousers, white t-shirt with a small pattern/logo on it (usially from Piute). And a hoodie if its not warm. I have 10+ white shirts and 3 of the same pairs of trousers (and 2 of the same shoes and 3 of the same hat for if I lose one etc...). So I do have a uniform really.
Terry__Tibbs@reddit
Work in an office and wear Natalino clothes mostly. Or if I'm at home I'm in Roots joggers and a t shirt
YOF626@reddit
I buy Chinos from Next
Rich6-0-6@reddit
Work polos and sweatshirt, Site trousers from B&Q. I am allegedly a manager and am supposed to dress like one but I can make anything I wear look scruffy. Scruffy smart clothes look worse than scruffy scruffy clothes
oldkstand@reddit
Uniqlo. Jeans and sweater.
notouttolunch@reddit
Arco. They do combats for about £15.
I'm actually a software engineer, I just find these appropriate for work sometimes. I'm not vain and don't care about brands.
Lordaucklandx@reddit
I work in an office and I just wear my normal clothes, even a cap most days. Work in insurance, so not even a creative job.
Targettio@reddit
Chinos and a shirt (smarter, even a tie of needed)or polo shirt (for more casual).
rezonansmagnetyczny@reddit
Work in the NHS.
I don't have a uniform but can choose to buy their polo shirts but don't because I don't like the colour.
Usually just buy 3/4 pairs of chinos from primark and 2 packs of shirts from next once a year.
Milam1996@reddit
Fun little tax info for you but if you get a branded uniform you can claim back tax on the laundry of it forever. Just make sure you absolutely definitely yes absolutely wear it yes of course yes.
A_Chicken_Called_Kip@reddit
Plain black polo shirt and tan chinos from M&S. Looks smart-ish but still comfortable. I could wear a formal shirt but I’m an engineer and I would ruin them pretty quickly.
Dartzap@reddit
Smart casual. Today I am wearing smart trousers and a t-shirt.
And I buy them from wherever has my size available.
ModernMorbidProphecy@reddit
Dickies trousers, vinted.
