I thought the photo was really cool because it shows two maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft from both the American and Soviet sides.

I used to fly in VP-45 back in the 80's . I would have to look at my records but i believe i have actually been on that plane. Yes we used to intercept Bears all the time and they would us. Have some great pics of us up close.

Incident at map grid 36-80
CarbonTugboat@reddit
Why’re we going southwest? Isn’t grid square 36-80 to the east?

I was USN Photographers Mate stationed at NAS Keflavik in the late 70's used to process photos like this, they were usually taken by the Air Force guys from F4's.

Air to air kills:
Tu-142M: 0
P-3: 1
I rest my case

I was on exercise around the time of the incident in an area not far away - some very interesting discussions at the time !
I think the risk of this happening again in the SCS is very high. Wouldn’t want to divert a stricken p-8 though - that said their ability to wipe themselves clean would be much better as a result of that incident…

Admittedly the Tu-142 could in theory increase that number as the early versions at least had guns.

I presume its the Hainan Island incident where a Chinese J8 hit a P3 and crashed?

Dropped a sonibuoy on a bandit?
FMC_Speed@reddit
You see that mean looking stinger at the back of the bear?
You want to poke it?

If you want a bunch of chaff fired at you, sure..?

Tu-95 was much faster, yes ?
Specialist_Reality96@reddit
Yes at altitude the TU was originally had the same role a the B47/52 high altitude strategic bombing, super critical wings not so helpful at 400ft trying to drop a nice tight pattern of sonar buoys around a diesel electric boat, been slow and very very quiet.
Having said that vastly more range than the P3 ever hopped to have.
FMC_Speed@reddit
They have swept wings and absurdly powerful engines, yeah they can comfortably cruise at much higher speed than the P-3

Bring back whitetops to frontline service damn you.

When was this taken around?
Leonid527@reddit (OP)
I'm not sure, but it was possibly in the 80s or early 1980s.
