So this happens now on phone browser

I have the app but I like scrolling better on the phone browser. Well, I used to.
zf420@reddit
I use Relay. It's 100000x better than the reddit app
_haha_oh_wow_@reddit
"Cool, guess I'll stop visiting. Piefed is looking pretty great these days anyways..."
Luna259@reddit
I briefly tried the website. It says sign in with Google but I can close that prompt and keep browsing. I’m using Safari on iOS
nateh1212@reddit
Ruining your product to get people to use our app which is a clone of your website
ElectronicStock3590@reddit
Just in case it isn’t clear to people—because I know what subreddit this is—the reason that companies force us onto their app even when it’s just some sort of frame of their website is because they are collecting our data and the web browser can still prevent this to some extent.
FactoryProgram@reddit
Don't forget constant notifications to keep bringing you back to look at their ads
nateh1212@reddit
Well of course they want you on their app because they control that eco system whether it is data collection, advertisement, or making you a daily user by having the app at your fingertips.
The Web is an open platform which means less control for the corporation.
HotTakes4HotCakes@reddit
Not even a clone. The app is actually worse in many ways.
Atillion@reddit
You can block ads with a browser, but not the app. An ad every 6 posts.. At the top of every comments and 4-5 comments at a time. It fucking sucks.
vincenzo_vegano@reddit
I use a third party app (Relay) without ads. It costs around 1€/$ if you use reddit moderately, can be higher for "power users". But imo it is worth it to not have to worry about ads. And the design is really minimalistic like old reddit.
HotTakes4HotCakes@reddit
Relay charges because they started paying the exorbitant rate for API access that Reddit implemented.
When you pay them, you are directly paying reddit for the very thing that destroyed the 3rd party apps. It's giving them exactly what they wanted.
Just use Firefox Mobile on Android with these add-ons: uBlock origins, old.reddit redirect, and Oldlander. It's not perfect but its passable.
jakeyounglol2@reddit
on iOS you can use apollo, and take the API key from an app that reddit exempted from the outrageous api prices for accessibility reasons
Aurelar@reddit
Technically you can, if you patch the app
hiddengirl1992@reddit
There's ways to block ads on the app. Revanced, Morphe...
freylaverse@reddit
Not to mention I can take a scrolling screenshot on the website...
ivanbin@reddit
Still using boost and loving it.
MrWeirdoFace@reddit
I still use old.reddit.com
deekbit@reddit
I use Firefox with uBlock origin extension ad blocker Or Brave and block elements using integrated ad blocker.
UBlock blocks it by default. Brave took a few taps to remove that.
yurigoul@reddit
What if you choose to load the desktop version?
BTW - in the EU and on old reddit in firefox this does n ot seem to happen
Acrobatic-Permit4263@reddit
happens to me. germany firefox mobile
LennyNero@reddit
I was pissed as hell when I discovered a week ago that the private app keys were all killed too.
spriguy21@reddit
You can get around it on iOS real easy. I was getting it and no longer on safari. 1. Click the hamburger / puzzle icon 2. Click hide distracting items 3. Click the banner then hide 4. Click the fade then hide
Voila. iOS will remember it going forward on Reddit. F’ers trying to force me to use their app
lunaligned@reddit
Ah no, that's is not a good sign.
BlastermyFinger0921@reddit
Use dystopia. 1000x better
Koraboros@reddit
Wait what. After the Apollo debacle I switched to web version because the Reddit app is atrocious.
rchiwawa@reddit
Same. When Ublock stops working or they enshittify the UI bad enough I will simply move on
ihatefuckingwork@reddit
It’s harder than you think to move on.
Source: been subbed to this for years, and I’m still fucking here.
lunk@reddit
I have been here 20 years. I was one of the first 5000 reddit users. I don't post here anymore (this will be deleted shortly), and I agree. There is just no replacement.
It was an easy choice to move here when Digg tanked themselves the first time. No easy fix right now, just a bunch of ai-slop-programmed "alternatives".
rchiwawa@reddit
Much like my move off of Windows to linux, I started years ago and spend at least as much time on my alts (some forums, some general reddit-esque places). I am ready but I agree it will be a pita whenever they cross my lines.
H_G_Bells@reddit
I have to switch out of the app and use it in browser just to select "don't get reply notifications" when I post something. It's annoying as hell.
tepall14@reddit (OP)
Thanks everyone for comments! Doing desktop version does seem to remedy it. Just gotta get used to the format.
Significant-Act-3872@reddit
Try https://sh.reddit.com and Firefox
aVarangian@reddit
I guess that's only on sh.reddit, not on old.reddit
StruggleThese75@reddit
I'm using Reddit on the browser on my phone right now. You have to change your user agent and click the desktop mode on your menu.
x21in2010x@reddit
By "user agent" could you also mean browser options? Sorry, I use old.reddit so I may be ignorant of some of Reddit's newer features.
Pamasich@reddit
The user agent is some text your browser uses to identify itself to websites. It's how the website knows whether you're on a phone and which browser you use, so it can tailor the experience accordingly.
There are extensions which let you change the user agent your browser sends, so you can pretend to be on a device or browser you're not. And I think I've seen mobile browsers that had the functionality built in.
x21in2010x@reddit
This is the exact thing that made me switch to Opera like 20 years ago for awhile (I happen to frequent two different webpages that effectively required exclusively different browsers to display properly). Thanks for the explanation XD
ElectronicStock3590@reddit
It should be illegal to block access to a public website like this.
marioncrepes@reddit
I hate them so bad I keep saying this but I used to burn money on this website now haven't spent in over 2 years the product is so ass
DentinQuarantino@reddit
I use Continuum on Android and it's brilliant. Ad free and doesn't require a paid subscription or even cost to download. Thank me later.
alabasterskim@reddit
Cool, I'll use a mobile browser with extensions that can block elements and block that whole popup & continue about my day. That, or finally wean myself off Reddit except on PC at home for short bouts.
If the aim is fewer users, promise you, we aim to please.
IEatDaFeesh@reddit
Use Brave
BrangJa@reddit
Reddit is shooting its own foot
zmesnjavca@reddit
If you have Brave you can tap on the lion icon next to the url > Advanced controls > Block element and tap on the pop-up. I had to do it twice to block the text box and then to block the background.
okamagsxr@reddit
I believe I switched the browser to "request desktop site" to get rid of this.
CertifiedYapper57@reddit
I use brave I think there is a feature to block "better in our app" messages like this
