Volant (volant aero tech) has just completed a $300 million Series C funding round. The company is developing the VE25-100, a 6-seat, 2.5-ton eVTOL. Publicly disclosed investors include:Stone Venture, Hongshan capital, Fortera-capital. The aircraft has already completed takeoff and landing test flights.

How is this not just a helicopter?

Apparently, high battery density enabled electric propulsion, and electric propulsion enabled multirotor designs (as a tiny DC motors can be placed individually at each rotor, eliminating the need for a heavy, cumbersome transmission).
And multirotor offers numerous advantages: design simplicity (software applying differential thrust to rotors instead of many complex mechanical parts in a helicopter), cheaper maintenance, quieter profile, VTOL operation using wings in level flight further reducing energy/noise, and the ability to survive the loss of a rotor or two. All of this makes it a true improvement for urban transportation.

Seems like helicopter design items reshuffled for an incremental improvement. I like the innovation. I wouldn't invest.

Wings for horizontal flight after Vertical takeoff.. See Osprey.
IM_REFUELING@reddit
Yay, more complexity and failure modes!
Cruel2BEkind12@reddit
Less redundancy it seems lol. An Osprey can lose an engine. This solution just seems to be adding engines so it doesn't matter if a few fail. These vtol electric vehicles are going to be loud as hell.

they're actually quieter but solid try.

In the case of Joby: insanely quiet, allowing for non-disruptive urban operation

Joby seems pretty quiet. a novel way to experience a taxi ride.

I can't wait to see these with a fancy folding mechanism that pulls the vertical props into a wing-bay entirely.
Then just shape it like an ov-10 bronco and take my money.
Recoil42@reddit
You're gonna see a lot of these with solid-state batteries finally coming to the fore.

These kinds of aircraft are waiting for a more powerful battery.
