MisterDoctor___@reddit
So is basically any other turbo engine.
LemonCurdd@reddit
Except for Mazdas 2.5T
sendme_your_cats@reddit
My brother in christ. You would be the expert in this.
Did you spend the 8 grand gor a pure trans upgrade? Or did you and your tuner limit torque up to a certain part of the rev range to prevent slipping?
Asking for a friend who wants to get a pure 800
obeytheturtles@reddit
$8k for full transition doesn't seem that outrageous depending on which surgeries you opt for.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
$10k for the 1200 hp one. There’s no limiting torque for this much power on the trans lol. My stock one one started slipping at like 600wtq. Torque does come on more gradually and later for the stock engine though.
sendme_your_cats@reddit
Nice. I'm thinking of getting stage 1 since I don't really want to go above 1000hp in the future.
How was the removal and install like? I'd likely go diy, but the logistics of removing and shipping the trans isn't something I've had to ever do.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
Oh I didn’t DIY the tranny lol. Turbo yes. I don’t have the tools to pull a transmission. AFAIK it’s pretty painless for someone with experience though. I left my car overnight and it was ready by afternoon the next day. Paid 6 hours of labor.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
With a lift and enough socket extensions, anything is possible!
ColoradoCyclist@reddit
Basically what they’re saying is if you change all the internals and improve the cooling as well as change the oil every 17 miles it can handle 900hp no problem. Something very special to the VR30. /s
Fearless_Neat_6654@reddit
All talk Nissan is at it again
Promising something exciting, delivering something mid
BentleySpeed@reddit
Says the moron with the shitbox
Fearless_Neat_6654@reddit
lmao
and what do you drive? In the real world not GTAonline
TwentyHourPharmacy@reddit
How is it mid? Do you own the car?
genuinecarrot@reddit
I hear turbo and I go, “Just another extra piece to manage.” Wish they’d give it the ol’ v8 tbh
Jamaican_Dynamite@reddit
The VR30's definitely been tortured tested by plenty of people on the street to confirm that.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit
I’m building a couple of them right now! People blow em all the time so it’s easy to get your hands on.
Intelligent_Method32@reddit
I can confirm after having 2 Infinitis with the VR30 and going through 4 engines. They all blow up, just a matter of when. Turbos are straight trash too. It's the main reason I'll never own a new Z.
Witness95@reddit
Do you know why they blew up? I was considering getting a new Z. I thought the VR30 was supposed to be reliable since it's been in the Infiniti for so long.
Intelligent_Method32@reddit
They were all warranty repairs so the dealer wouldn't disclose too much but I've heard the blocks are defective and just end up cracking.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit
Well, that’s exactly why I’m building them better! Brand new updated turbos, race bearings, rings, and updated cooling.
People are hard on these motors and forget to switch to 5w30 + 5000 miles or less changes.
Jamaican_Dynamite@reddit
What twins did you go with? Per the previous comments, the OEM Infiniti ones really left a bad taste with some people.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit
Just the new OEM updated Garrett turbos. Free under warranty.
herefortime@reddit
Rebuilding them to sell?
ColoradoCyclist@reddit
One to sell one for me.
herefortime@reddit
Very cool
roman_maverik@reddit
The turbos in the Z are different from the Infiniti models
flapsmcgee@reddit
But the Z and Q50 Red sport both have 40p hp...

Because of your flair and my love of the Geo brand I had to go see about this Tracker.

Haha thanks, she’s gonna be a winner!
MembershipNo2077@reddit
Sometimes you see them exploded on the side of the road. Few engines experience suffering quite like those.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit
Customer with a blown motor, forgot to change the oil for 34k miles. I couldn’t even believe it lasted that long.
strangway@reddit
The Z’s VR30DDTT is just a de-tuned/downsized version of the GT-R’s VR38DETT.
potato/POTATO
FrankReynoldsCPA@reddit
No it isn't LMAO.
strangway@reddit
You’re right. The VR30 is actually more advanced, using a modern direct injection system. The VR38 used port injection.
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
This is well known. Theyre making over 600hp with downpipes, injectors, and a tune.
Das-Wauto@reddit
Pretty much every turbo engine is capable of a lot more power. The question is for how long it is capable of producing more power than it originally had.
Ok_Two_2604@reddit
And whether it will pass emissions.
f8Negative@reddit
What are emissions lol
Midgetsdontfloat@reddit
And whether or not everything downstream of that turbo engine is capable of taking the added power.
WUT_productions@reddit
That and emissions.
drfsrich@reddit
And how much the dealers will mark it up.
buffinator2@reddit
And... emissions?
_Nick_2711_@reddit
Yes, but also the emissions.
the_humeister@reddit
But what about emissions?
Linton_M@reddit
We forgot about the emissions
RealSprooseMoose@reddit
Don't forget the emissions.
PEEWUN@reddit
And my emissions!
nolongerbanned99@reddit
Nocturnal or otherwise?
obeytheturtles@reddit
And if the fuel pump can keep up
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Right, in general with most turbo motors the limiting factor is the turbo and/or heat soak. For the VR engines the stock turbos aren't capable of doing much more than around 500whp and that's really pushing them to the limit.
In most of these cases the turbos are intentionally smaller to prioritize response torque across the rev range over a max hp figure. The stock VR block can probably do 800hp or so.
Users5252@reddit
It's impressive how much power you can produce out of some newer turbo engines stock, even the ones from economy cars. I think that you can tune the VW 1.8t on the Golf Alltrack to almost match the GTI's power
jca_ftw@reddit
It apparently needs “a lot more power” just to hit the current states power! It’s so slow compared to other 400hp sports cars according to many online sources.
cargarfar@reddit
This car in Nismo and manual transmission trims in the new green would make me consider a new one. I like that they’re still relatively rare to see in the wild and if they can command common tuning capabilities as well as long term sustainability of the Nissan brand, those would be selling points. Interesting to see the demographic buying these is older, which makes sense considering the 240Z and 300ZX design cues. A lot of Gen X approach me about my 300ZX TT as it was their HS poster car.
WorldClassPianist@reddit
The older demo is just because of price. What used to be somewhat affordable new is out of reach for any average youngin. The Nisssan dude just spins it as nostalgia or whatever BS to make it sound good.
cargarfar@reddit
The average age of a new Mustang is in their 50s. Pretty universal new car (and by the same extension, home buyers) are skewing older. This isn’t an article put out by Nissan but anecdotally makes sense why the buyers are older than by comparison the Supra.
WorldClassPianist@reddit
The supra is even more expensive than a Z. I don't see how Z buyers are older than Supra buyers though I don't have statistics.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
Supra’s been out for a while and was pretty cheap to get into. $52k got you into the i6 turbo. The extra $6k for the Premium only got you (necessary IMO) driver assist and technology stuff like blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise lmao. That was the same price as the Performance Z when it came out, and way cheaper than the NISMO.
WorldClassPianist@reddit
Your comparison is all over the place. 2020 Supra was 51k base. First year 2023 Nissan Z base was 42k. Performance was 52k. Nismo came in '24 at 65k. '23 Supra was 55k base. The base and performance Z were always cheaper than the Supra given the same year. Nismo is more expensive unless you compare the final edition Supra which is a fair bit more expensive than even the Nismo.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
It’s not all over the place. You just weren’t reading.
I said the 6-cylinder Supra base was the same price as the Performance Z.
The Premium Supra was $58k, which is less than the NISMO at $65k.
You could get the Supra for under MSRP for the first 2 years.
You couldn’t get the Z for under 15-30k markup for the first 3 years.
Thus, the Z was more expensive for most buyers and the Supra was being bought for the same price as a Type R. Thus, younger buyers could afford it for a while.
WorldClassPianist@reddit
Why are you comparing nismo to the premium? Why are you not comparing base to base? Oh that's right, the base Z is 12-13k cheaper than the base Supra so it doesn't match your narrative. The premium supra is more akin to the performance Z. If anything the Nismo should be compared to the FE.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
Because the base is trash and the NISMO is literally still worse than the Supra despite the price.
AdjustDeezNutz@reddit
They need to develop a new chassis to handle more power.
granolaraisin@reddit
IIRC the going was never a problem. It's the stopping that they had an issue with.
OvernightExpert@reddit
Sell. it. in. Europe. you. dense. ****.
DarkMatterM4@reddit
Blame Europe's regulations, not Nissan. They'd definitely sell it in Europe if they could.
OvernightExpert@reddit
Trust me I already do, but theres also no appetite from Nissan which bothers me to no end. They completely fumbled the bag with the Leaf which could have been a leading EV today thanks to its headstart, and allow Nissan's fleet average emissions to be ok. They could also offer a very detuned version (which a savvy tuner can unlock :)) and lower the car's emissions.
Seeker80@reddit
I was thinking they could've offered the Z with the 300hp VR30 to start. With the torque improvement, it likely would've been a step past the 370Z. It would get the entry price down, too. Then offer the 400hp version optional.
It's a bummer they didn't want to sell it in Europe. The Z is loved over there, almost like the value proposition. We had the Mustang/Camaro/Challenger to undercut the BMW/Audi/MB offerings, and the Z was doing that for you guys. The increased volume would've helped pricing as well. Everyone wins on that front.
BWFTW@reddit
Can it make that extra power while meeting emissions though?
jca_ftw@reddit
Emissions are multi-fold. Each car has a govt mandated limit of certain emissions and then there is the whole problem of CAFE standards on the fleet as a whole. Nissan doesn’t have any notable presence in hybrid or EV so they can’t really afford to do much. We need to get rid of CAFE and carbon credit sales. All it does is to put extra BILLIONS of dollars into Tesla pockets
PastPalpitationCry@reddit
I wish they would just put the emmision stuff behind an easy to break software lock.
Slideways@reddit
They do, it’s called a tune.
zarif2003@reddit
how much of it can you extract without blowing up the engine though.
ColoradoCyclist@reddit
Depends on how far you upgrade but like 3 breathing upgrades nets you 500hp and if you do cooling upgrades and bearings you can do 600hp. If you throw money at it some guys are getting close to 1000hp.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
VR30s are generally known to be good to 800whp on stock internals. The turbos run out of breath well before the engine runs out of strength, as is the case for almost every modern turbo engine.
Lower_Kick268@reddit
On a VR30 quite a bit, at least another 100hp without a massive impact to durability
DocPhilMcGraw@reddit
I'm just surprised that Infiniti doesn't adopt the VR30DDTT in the QX65. I feel like we need to go back to the early 2000s where Infiniti basically said "we're going to take the Nissan 350Z and make it a crossover." And thus the original FX35/45 was born.
Gas_Grass_Ass_Class@reddit
That vehicle got me fired from a job, but it was worth it.
k_dubious@reddit
That would require Infiniti to be interested in making a SUV that wasn’t a badge-engineered Nissan, so I’m not holding my breath.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
FX/QX70 never sell well in before, I don’t think Nissan would try that again.
Seeker80@reddit
That's the problem with the platform. The QX65 is a 'coupe' version of the QX60 aka the Pathfinder, which has been a transverse/fwd-oriented crossover since 2010. It can't use the longitudinal/rwd-oriented VR engine.
Nissan probably could've done the same for the FX/QX70 as they did for the current Z. Keep the chassis but do a new exterior/interior and switch to the VR30 engine. It was a game-changer for the Z, and I'm sure it would've worked for the QX70 too. It was like a 'budget Cayenne' for a lot of people, and the VR engines would've been very helpful in maintaining that image.

Tool 10 seconds of searching on autotrader to find quite a few being advertised well below msrp (pnw)
WorldClassPianist@reddit
You missed your chance. You could get Z's for 10k+ off few months ago pretty easily.
SKNABCD@reddit
I've seen a fair few at or below
Vhozite@reddit
Who cares? Thats meaningless in 2026 where cars with big power from turbos are everywhere and EVs have made speed more accessible than ever.
Can it make that power while managing heat and longevity? Can it be made to an accessible price point for something like the upcoming Skyline? Can it not sound terrible?
These CEO sound bites are annoying as hell
lumpialarry@reddit
Any engine is capable of more power...once.
costafilh0@reddit
The real question is, how much the chassi can handle.
Seeker80@reddit
Even if Nissan decided that the VR30 wasn't up for the job, they could still use the VR35 for some extra headroom.
The VR isn't just for GT-Rs anymore. These mass-produced versions are still plenty potent as well.
wolvesreign88@reddit
Too bad it will still sound like a vacuum cleaner.
Morbidly_Off_Piste@reddit
more power solves 0% of the problems of the Z
PowerSpool@reddit
I get they're probably building up to then throw it into the new GTR but the R35 was already ridiculous enough with the power it could handle. You hear 1000hp GTR and you go "eh thats not that fast for those cars" lol its wild. I guess they're hoping the new one will logically handle 2000hp
WUT_productions@reddit
Engineering is about balancing requirements, people dont want to do an oil change every 5000 km, spark plugs every 20,000 km, etc.
Vehicle also needs to pass emissions. The EPA is more careful with testing and inspections after Dieselgate.
VariationAgreeable29@reddit
For the 7 people currently shopping a new Z

Can you first not make the engine look like spaghetti so every repair doesn't require at least 10 hours.

The Z1 600R makes 600hp with just bolt-on's and a tune, so yeah.
