Isn’t this what the next Tesla Roadster “SpaceX Edition” is supposed to be?
atomicskiracer@reddit
Yes, the roadster that will be delivered in 2020
hi_im_bored13@reddit (OP)
It is. Vaporware wars are shaping up well
Low_Succotash5073@reddit
God. China just keeps eating our lunch. I would love to buy a hilariously overpowered, over-engineered Chinese EV for the price of a US mid-trim crossover.
mulletstation@reddit
Do people seriously believe the prices in China automatically stay the same when they move into the US?
Like the minimum wage is $300... a month
Think how that changes cost of goods
Low_Succotash5073@reddit
Is it such a bad thing that I want a better quality product?
mulletstation@reddit
If a Chinese product enters the US without even being impacted by Tariffs, they'll price it where they think it'll sell for maximum profit and still gain an acceptable market share. At no point will they just dump a $100k car into the US at $40k.
zarif2003@reddit
Imagine if they come to market before Tesla
sioux612@reddit
Only need to build like 2 of them and let one drive around, maybe give it to some influencer
And suddenly its a vehicle more real than the Tesla
That would be kinda hilarious to see the reaction to on the tesla forums, but I haven't touched those with a ten foot pole since the Tesla Anschluss happened

I know it sounds too good to be true, & it probably is to some extent, but I will say I know a good few folks working there, I'm a huge vacuum nerd, I absolutely love this company. The money/effort/talent they've put in these past few years has been absolutely incredible
Several billions in r&d every year, largest LIDAR orders of anyone, they make some of the best if not the best robot vacuums, have *some* of the most impressive tech in cordless vacuum, they are now developing their own silicon, tons of cracked ex-tsinghua folks, they've in just a few years done a decent-to-impressive job in like every consumer electronics segment
Which like, the car is just standard concept car marketing bits. I highly doubt that entire concept will make it to market. But I am so excited for whatever car from them does, & they're backed by xiaomi as well who have put out very solid EVs themselves
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
MFs who compare cars to white goods are in shambles, it turns out whitegood aficionados are real
hi_im_bored13@reddit (OP)
There is far more research & development that goes into a vacuum (& especially modern autonomous robot vacuums) than people realize. Not even the motor, just one part of it,
So many ex-aero, ex-f1 etc. fluid engineers working at these firms to optimize the flow path towards that motor, both the mechanical filtration leading up to it as well as everything down to the beater bar that picks the dirt off your carpets
E.x. the Cinetic tips on some old Dysons, near-perfect mechanical cyclonic filtration of particles to the point where it needed zero filter maintenance, or at least attempted to. Or the bin design on the new V16, know the guy who did that up, absolute work of art watching it unclog itself & work out w/o a traditional first-stage cyclone
But when you do get that peak its understandable why these firms would want to try their hand at a car, why Dyson tried a number of years back, its all the same principles, just scaled up a notch. But yes I'm afraid the local Dyson store rep knows me by name now
(& if you do talk to these university students, that younger audience etc, they seem to love EVs in their own way almost out of admiration & respect of the effort that goes into making those cars so versatile rather than purely on raw feel & input, like how we look at f22s at the airshow)
& obviously if you go to top engineering universities in the US & enthusiast forums & whatnot you'll find all the same types. but its not the same scale, from what I saw, as it is there. who knows what they're feeding the kids over in shenzhen
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
Ngl I understand none of this, bar also dearly wanting an Impulse if they ever make a non-battery version. In Australia most homes have their own battery already or will soon, and you can only claim the rebate once, so it's kinda pointless. The cooktop itself is mega cool though
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
For those who don't want to read an entire second article:
Also the AI assistant is called Metis, and while they're insufferable in concept as a mythology nerd that's the kind of deep cut that I really like (goddess of wisdom, Athena's mother).
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Backed by Xiamoi ? If Xiamoi decides to come America market, they would sell their model under their nameplate.
hi_im_bored13@reddit (OP)
Backed as in seed/a/b funding + dreame codeveloped & cobranded early vacuums for xiaomi
Their recent products (since \~2019) have been largely independent. Xiaomi has something they call the Xiaomi Ecological Chain where they invest in these sorts of startups & in return build out a unified ecosystem for themselves w/ some of their technologies
It is slightly similar to e.x. what Huawei is doing w/ their automotive alliance. Slightly
But it is more akin to say vw<->porsche<->audi than mini<->bmw, from what I understand
threeinacorner@reddit
China so dominant right now they're even taking over the ridiculous vapourware hypercar market segment, previously ruled by the Tesla Roadster 2, and the exquisite Devel Sixteen.
Recoil42@reddit
Got to see the Devel Sixteen at an auto show once. Good christ, what an obvious grift that thing is.
cat_prophecy@reddit
Are they that dominant? Or is it just that the market is new and gets a ton of press?
The only major market that Chinese brands are in the top 10 sales is China.
Recoil42@reddit
Dreame seems really serious about this one.
hi_im_bored13@reddit (OP)
Their CEO is absolutely obsessed w/ becoming the Chinese Elon Musk. Goes both ways, I suppose. They're doing silicon & satellites. & top tier Vaporware. At least they're sticking w/ lidar.
whitewalkerbfd@reddit
The Chinese car manufacturers are literally giving us tuned gaming cars to drive in real life! What a time to be a petrol head
Skeeno-TV@reddit
Dreame?the smart robot cleaner company?!
A_Pointy_Rock@reddit
I'm sure a jet engine will have no trouble meeting road car emissions requirements...
FlorydaMan@reddit
Once they give the proper attention to original design, I'll start taking them more seriously. They ruin interesting ideas with slapping some other people designs on top and fuck that.
ferdiazgonzalez@reddit
It comes with upgraded gaskets due to the extreme snake oil pressures developed during launch.
BWFTW@reddit
That's about 3g of acceleration for anyone curious. Doubt it will ever launch in any real sense aha
one_five_one@reddit
I don't care. I'd be impressed by 500 mile range and 10 min charge times.
