a lot of protestant sects in USA are descendants of radical protestant groups that were hated in Europe and left to settle in the british colonies, so they can be obnoxious about their believes somewhere else, unbothered.

Europe wasn't sending their best smh, needed better border security
C_umputer@reddit
Duh, they literally sent prostitutes and criminals to populate some colonies.
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
the prostitutes and criminals were still better than the fundies
goombanati@reddit
Except for the irish. Those lads were alright.
TomatoSpecialist6879@reddit
Nobody is sending their best to bumfuck nowhere with risk of dying to unknown diseases or locals who'd scalp alive
No_Oddjob@reddit
This is a wild summation of people who - fled government mandated religion - sought local congressional control instead of centralized control over religion - fled forced military conscription because of their pacifism - thought people should be allowed to read their own religious texts.
The VAST majority of US protestantism is based on Puritan, Anglican, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Mennonite groups fleeing persecution predominantly for the reasons above.
Seriously, read something other than Coffee Shop Philosopher's Quarterly before posting somewhere like... oh, right, Reddit.
My bad. Carry on.
puff_of_fluff@reddit
You just said the same thing in four different ways basically lol
HippoRun23@reddit
Fucking wild how that can pass down for generations.
Also the Christian media machine growing over the last 40 years is probably a part of it too.
Sbotkin@reddit
It's kinda wild how religious USA is. It's the most religious Christian country on Earth after Vatican, and it's mindblowing to my European mind.
WoolooOfWallStreet@reddit
Yep
What’s most surprising is how religious the US is when its founding documents try to be secular. Meanwhile, countries like Norway, have their own church (Church of Norway) but nowadays try their best to be non-religious
How they act vs what’s on paper is completely reversed
Sbotkin@reddit
Monarchies are way more secular than a country that was built around hatred for kings.
gettinguud@reddit
The religious rejects and fanatics of Great Britain were sent here to practice their religion freely. I'm not surprised we have the religious nuts we do in America.
Yellowdog727@reddit
Except the religious fanatics were the ones who settled in New England, which is now the most progressive part of the country.
The south was originally colonized for cash crops
Ironically the first and second great awakening movements that spread much stronger in the south flourished because of a void left by the wealthy Anglican church. People that were left in the dust on cash cropping (poor whites, enslaved people + descendants) felt they needed somewhere to turn and new congregations flourished.
gettinguud@reddit
That's still a lot of words to say that belief system spread like a virus because the extremist had to keep moving elsewhere in order to be extreme.
Neomataza@reddit
Didn't the mormons pick up and leave to live in the desert twice, or more?
Diezelbub@reddit
Their founder kept getting run out of town for telling his neighbors God said he needs to fuck their wives and children, lol
wordjedi@reddit
finally, out of ideas with nowhere left to run, they had to invent Utah
SyntheticDuckFlavour@reddit
And then the settlers in New England had enough of their bullshit, so the crazies when to the bible belt.
BoredCapy@reddit
There are 2 kinds of Christians in the US:
Liberation Theology Latin Catholics, which are trad and fine and chill, and
Literal Devil Worshipers. Motherfuckers so evil the CIA weaponized them against Latin America. Godless heathens that sin for fun and go against every teaching of Jesus Christ.
Saliiim@reddit
I'm a Christian and occasionally go to church, but like many things the Americans take it way too far. If it makes them happy I suppose
GreatGigInTheSky855@reddit
Happened to me, but in my teens. I said no, and after being grounded enough times, they realized it wasn’t gonna change my mind. And then I came out as bisexual, and that was the last nail in the coffin lmao
I have no regrets, because my older brother is now a religious nut. So much so that he tried to get my parents not to go to our gay cousin’s wedding because “supporting that is a sin”. I wish I knew where he got that idea because even the local priest was like “nah you’re good you can go”
Hallien@reddit
I'm not American but one time I asked our local priest (evangelical) if I need to visit church every Sunday to be a good Christian and she said I don't even have to come once. She said that relationship with faith and God is a very personal thing and you shouldn't believe in things other people want you to say or do. To me as a laveyan satanist, it sounded pretty damn reasonable. Maybe if more priests were like that, people wouldn't hate the church so much.
papaya_yamama@reddit
For the vast majority of history Protestant off shoots have been the progressive branch of Christianity- historically supporting gay international, abortion and arguably kicking off the liberal democracy movement. It wasn't like catholics were massively regressive either they just had stricter doctrine.
Its a much more recent phenomenon of protestants being whacky conservatives with backwards views.

American Christians act like cult members, because NEWFLASH it's a fucking cult.
MrYougan@reddit
'cause in the end, a religion is mearly a cult that had success.

Evangelicals annoy a man so much he leaves Christianity.
Many such cases.
MenopauseMedicine@reddit
Simple, American Christian's act like cult members because they are in a cult
ElectricSnowBunny@reddit
Eh, it's not like being Mennonite, you just stop going to church, nbd.
Pyrimo@reddit
Why do they act like cult members?
Well anon, you just answered your own question.

Do you have any idea, how hard I work to cultivate this stank?
I have to tell my mom NO like 8 times a day, telling me to shower. She's even got my sister and dad in on it now.
I handpicked this aroma for pheromonemaxxing, but I don't think they've kicked in yet as I was just banned from the couch...
