I use these shot shells for wasps, carpenter bees, and deer mice. They're just about useless outside of a few feet and I wouldn't trust it to kill even something the size of a squirrel.
I've taken countless raccoons with 1050fps .22LR hollowpoints, but that's about their limit in terms of animal size.
manbruhpig@reddit
Wait, you shoot wasps and bees with .22lr?
pyrimethamine@reddit
22lr shot shells! Why what do you use?
manbruhpig@reddit
Bucket of gas, and a zapper for any stragglers.
Correct-Sail-9642@reddit
Bucket of gas? Mr expendable income over here using buckets of gasoline for pest control, quite the flex these days
pyrimethamine@reddit
I figure shotshells count as training for the coming drone wars
Abundleofstick@reddit
Wait, like you shoot flying wasp with it, or their nest? If you're shooting their nest, does it not damage the side of your house?
pyrimethamine@reddit
Flying wasps if they start something, usually we leave each other alone but there are times when conflict cannot be avoided.
For nests on the house I use Wondercide spray, that stuff is great!
Correct-Sail-9642@reddit
My record shot was with CCI .22lr shotshells, THREE brown rats taken out of an oak tree with ONE shot at about 15'-18' from my Heritage Rough Rider Barkeep 3'' Thought it was just a two-fer until the 3rd one that ran off fell off the next branch dead as a door nail.
AquaPhelps@reddit
I always hunt raccoons with a .22. Gotta get a headshot tho
SandmanS2A@reddit
Is this how you structure a question sentence?
Malbushim@reddit
22LR is enough to take out big pests, question?
GalaxyHunter17@reddit
Depends on your definition of pest, Rocky. Mice and small armies? Yes. Florida gators? No. Astrophage? Too small to shoot, which is why we need the Taumoeba.
WiseDirt@reddit
Ehh, you can take a florida gator with 22lr. Can't use just any standard rounds tho. For that job, you gotta break out them good ol' CCI Stangers... and make sure to place your shots properly.
Kookytoo@reddit
You gotta choot dem alagatos
WiseDirt@reddit
Right at de base o de skull
DumTheGreatish@reddit
They do, actually. But they're professionals shooting mostly restrained gators at unrealistic distances for a common home owner with "big pests". The shot placement and range is similar to executing cattle and domestic pigs with a .22, sub 5 meters and a spot thats between ½" to ¾". For cattle and pigs, there is actually a hammer you load a .22 in and just whack them with it.
Honest_Particular165@reddit
Not with proper shot placement.
Onlyhereforapost@reddit
Gators not pests, gators more like decoration with bad attitude
Th3BaconNation@reddit
Don't they use grappling hooks and single shot 22s to hunt gators?

Question: 22lr take big enough pest out?
Enioff@reddit
English might not be their first language, for instance his structure would be correct in portuguese.
DrZedex@reddit
It is, yes? Lol
DumTheGreatish@reddit
Define "big". Raccoon, cat, smaller dog, etc, sure. Just for the sake of being humane, I wouldnt use a .22 on anything over 30 or 40lbs. Sure, with decent shot placement it could pretty reliably take down a 100lb animal, but most likely you're not getting a kill shot on a pest like that, especially if its dark and the pest is moving.
I would go with something that has more energy, so either heavier projectile or more velocity. .22 magnum, 17hmr, 9mm(from a carbine), .223/5.56, 5.7x28, etc.
.22lr and .22 short are really only consistent humane kills on varmints like cats and raccoons. Something the size of a medium dog will probably make a break for it and go die in pretty nasty agony unless youre willing to track it.
manbruhpig@reddit
If you have perfect shot placement opportunity, for example if you are shooting something in the head from a foot away, I have seen it take down large cows.
DumTheGreatish@reddit
Again, youre talking about shot placement that has minor room for deviation thats about the size od a quarter. .22lr from a rifle will not penetrate bovine skulls, no matter the placement, at 25 meters and actually becomes unreliable at 15 meters, again, requiring that quarter sized shot placement.
He didn't ask if this was a good caliber for a professional crack shot killing pests, or for a farmer putting down cattle. The fact that he had to ask about the ballistic performance of the most common, readily available round tells me hes probably not an amazing marksman (good, yeah probably). So to err on the side of caution and to give advice to the average gun owner shooting pests larger than a raccoon at ranges you would generally do so, the most reasonable answer is no instead of trying to praise the little cartridge that maybe'd. Speaking from the experience of growing up on a chicken farm and having to track a bleeding wild dog for a mile at 3 a.m. to put it out of the misery I exposed it to with my .22.
DANPARTSMAN44@reddit
I love 22 magnum round so versatile and fun
DumTheGreatish@reddit
Agreed. I had a Keltec pmr that was an absolute blast. 30+1 .22 mag. I discovered it didnt like to cycle with most lubricants though. I got some shooters lube off a Facebook add after skimming the 5k+ positive comments about it and was happily shocked that it cycled flawlessly afterwards. Ended up trading it for a really big 3 axis cnc, but I do miss it.
DaveyAllenCountry@reddit
22lr to the head will kill power much anything except a rhino or an alligator. You just have to be really good worry the placement and work some creatures a little lucky. It can even take down a brown bear. However i will stick with my 44 😂
cruzwie@reddit
usually use 37mm salt rounds

When I was young maybe 8 my father gave me a Steven crackshot 26 if memory serves me right on the number. A rolling block single shot his brother gave him, father was born in 1927, I’d bet it’s close to 100 years old. I still got it in the back of the safe. It was like my own lil mini shotgun for hunting small birds around the property. Using that exact cartridge, seeing the cartridge brought back memories. Last ones I saw were like CCI gel capsules. I didn’t think they made those anymore.
Unhappy_Voter@reddit
According to Ilhan Omar: "The last time the .22 LR was used, it was used to disarm and destroy German, Japanese, Italian imsurgents during World War 11".

Federal 22LR bird shot. Just had to check my own box.
bzdelta@reddit
Balutshot! Have you taken any game with it?
Tim_Riggins07@reddit
They will knock a pigeon down from the rafters in a bard, I will say that.
ilikeyou69@reddit
So will a tennis ball lol
Got_Sig@reddit
And more humanly.
DumTheGreatish@reddit
This is likely incorrect. The bird shot will pepper it with enough projectiles at enough velocity to almost certainly kill the bird. If it you hit the bird, and its hollow bones, with a tennis ball, it will be irreparably injured, and then you have to kill it anyways.
If I had to choose between get shot, or get hit by a car then get shot, I'd just prefer to skip the car.
Got_Sig@reddit
It’s seems that I’m underestimating the power of “bird shot” from a .22lr. I just wouldn’t trust it to get the job done. Get the pigeon from the rafters down, maybe, but I doubt it would kill it coming out of a handgun if you shot a bird center mass. I’m ok with being wrong, I just don’t see this round being fired from a handgun killing a bird.
Tim_Riggins07@reddit
They have to be like close close to kill them with bird shot out of a .22 pistol. But as far as suffering goes with shooting them with a rifle, is very short. The bird can be dispatched the second it hits the ground so it’s not super relevant whether they die instantly or not. I aim at the base of the neck and they do often times die instantly.
Got_Sig@reddit
Thanks for the clarity, I admittedly have no hands on exp w .22 bird shot. My experience w .22lr is just leaving me little faith in the birdshot counterpart. Now the 22LR is the only caliber that I’ve ever seen perform magic, when it comes to entry and exit wounds. It can be like the bullet went on a road trip from your shoulder to your leg. With what I know about 22LR, I would probably rather be shot by a .380 round nose.
Je_in_BC@reddit
Literally hundreds of rats. It does them fibre at close range and doesn’t put a hole in the chicken coup.
KikisGamingService@reddit

testprimate@reddit
Federal 22LR shot looks just like OP's round. It uses the same size shot as CCI (with the plastic shell) but holds a little bit less of it.
TOKING-TONZ@reddit
For the more recent ones yes otherwise it was cheaper and easier to use a cartridge crimp and do it this way as well for the older cartridges
Happy_Garand@reddit
Those are cci ratshots. Remington's are like this
CPTherptyderp@reddit

They’re good for groundhogs
ShoemakerMicah@reddit
The highest scoring “kid” in my rural area takes down a hundreds of feral hogs yearly, with a .17 MHR and thermal optic. His scope records video of each shot. Shot placement matters more than anything. Yes, I do know .17 MHR is actually a fairly wicked rimfire cartridge.
He’s graduated from doing it for fun, to it being his second job. Oh to be young again. He literally gets contracted by local ranching operations now.
VladStark@reddit
I remember laughing when I saw .17 HMR on the ammo shelf... Like wow look at this baby cartridge! But apparently it has pretty good ballistics. I had no idea it could take out hogs even with proper placement though.
ShoemakerMicah@reddit
If I hadn’t seen probably a hundred videos he showed me I definitely wouldn’t have believed it. I mean this now young man, has $5000+ optic on a $400 bolt action with a suppressor. Blew my mind.
Malbushim@reddit

erifnogarddloc@reddit

maltedLecas@reddit
as others have pointed out , that's 22 ratshot.
years ago I had a friend who had a winchester model 61 pump action 22(s,l,lr) that he told me had been used to decimate a starling infestation in the ivy on the side of his house in Kansas(i think). what he told me is they had fired several hundred or thousand (he varied the story from time to time) rat shot through it over the course of several years. what i can say for certain is that the barrel had little or no rifling visible and it was still as accurate as any 22 rifle i've ever shot.
Muricanmoose@reddit
I use it against angry cheese. Stops them cold.
LilJonny2cookies@reddit
Well I think that is a blank or snake shot. Not my choice for SD but I’ve read more than a few stories where grandma smoked a bad guy breaking in to their pad.
BlueOrb07@reddit
Depends. 22LR, as a lead bullet instead of the rat shot I assume that is, will take down pidgeons, squirrels, rabbits, racoons, possum, skunk, moles, ground hogs, and more around that size, but you need to aim for the vitals and with something like a big racoons it needs to be a good shot in the brain. Anything larger and it needs to be an incredibly well aimed shot and you must have a lot of luck too. It can and has killed people (plenty of them), but there are far better calibers for that in case you meant for defense. I personally would suggest anything under 32acp for those purposes and 32acp is a minimum.
As a general rule, if it weights at or under about 8 pounds, a 22LR will reliably kill it if you are precise in your shot placement. Above that you’re probably gonna wanna step it up a little. 410 or 20 gauge works too.
5.56 is good for coyotes, bobcat, and other game animals not quite medium game sized. Plus 5.56 doesn’t damage the pelts.
For medium game such as deer, hogs, etc you’re going to want a full powered round. 308, 44 magnum, 30-30, generally 30 cal or larger. 12 gauge works too if it’s buck shot or slugs.
corey5188@reddit
For the record, more people are killed by .22LR than any other caliber bullet. Thats based on the actual lead slug, not bird shot rounds. Not being argumentative, just an interesting tidbit!
theFirehawker@reddit
Tbf 5.56 has killed a whole lot of hogs, nice when you can easily place follow up shots especially when you dont care about the condition of the animal after.
C4PTNK0R34@reddit
With a well-placed shot it, it can take down a bear. I honestly wouldn't trust it reliably against something that size though, but people do hunt coyotes with 22LR, just not that particular birdshot round you have there.

"Big pests"? Like rats? Sure. Squirrels? Yes. Foxes and raccoons? If you're a good shot, you definitely want some better .22lr rounds but they will do it.
Tballz9@reddit
On 1953 the then world record size grizzly bear was killed with a single shot from a 22 rifle to the head. So, the round can certainly kill even large animals. The fact that people still talk about this event suggests it is a rare thing. I think everyone would rather have a larger caliber to provide some more margin for error.
