Anyone else noticed that it's taking longer to recover your lost sleep?

Had a terrible sleep maybe a week ago and got a total of four hours. I'm still struggling to catch up! Went to bed early Friday just gone and slept in Saturday and got 10 hours, early last night and got 7.5......still woke up this morning feeling like the world could end and I couldn't care. I've had this before and even went to the extent of seeing my dr for bloods etc- all for nought. If this is my life moving forward (one bad night equating to weeks of exhaustion) then I'm not going to enjoy getting older at-all!

Yeah it’s common because your hormones change as you get older and lifestyle choices inhibit sleep quality . It might be good to examine what you do before you go to sleep. If you eat too close to bedtime your body will struggle to digest while you sleep and burn sugar as well as elevate cortisol. Stressors before bed will also affect sleep quality. If you take an hour with no phone or tv before you go to bed and wind down you’ll probably sleep better. Also cut off any caffiene early in the day like before noon. At night magnesium glycinate complex with l-theanjne and apigenin really helps with sleep quality. Lastly, for the recovery from lack of sleep I recommend creatine . It is definitely a supplement for workouts but also helps with mental clarity especially with little sleep. I’m not a doctor and only letting you know what worked for me . Lastly, one thing I learned this year is that none of us have to give into the notion that getting older produces inherent health issues that can’t be corrected. If you are determined and follow a plan you can have the same vitality and energy as when in your 20s.

AFAIK You don’t “catch up” with sleep. And you don’t need to. One night sleep and you should be back to normal. I worked nights for years :)

Still no issues sleeping. 5 seconds and I am out. Waking up 15 minutes before my alarm.

Omg yes!!
I remember the days I could be out until 5 in the am, sleep an hour or two, work a full day and do it all again.
I had three busy late nights this past week. 3 nights in a row. It was all super important things to me and I had a ton of fun but 4 days later I still feel a bit out of it. Like I can’t quite shake the groggy feeling even though I’ve had 3 good night sleeps since…I won’t be doing that again.
I also notice I get dehydrated really quickly when I’m not getting quality sleep which doesn’t help things.

I work in tech and semi-regularly have to work during the night to do maintenances etc. I used to be able to do it with zero fallout. Now I feel fine the next day but I feel like absolute dogshit the day after and will not be 100% for a few days.

Yes - this last time change was brutal. Took me about a month to get used to it

That's one of the many great things about retirement. It doesn't matter what time I go to bed or get up.

Dude, I hate to break this to you but the reality is, you NEVER "make up" for lost sleep.
It's gone. In the past.
You don't get time back on the old sleep clock to "make up" for it. You just sleep more or longer and lose more awake time. Fact.
There's plenty of time for sleep in the grave.

I take Xanax. Otherwise, if I get tired at 50/m my memory starting go to shit.
Better living through chemicals.

I was struggling with my sleep, i did a sleep study and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Now that its been treated i get great deep solid REM sleep. 5 or 6 hours of sleep and I’m good to go with plenty of energy to carry my through the whole day.

Yes—I’ve had to call out and work from home (lucky I can do that) bc I didn’t get enough sleep. Like the way I feel reminds me of a hangover. And I quit drinking years ago. I’m in bed by 10 or 10:30 most nights. Bad sleep can wreck me. This started after I turned 50. I imagine it’s not going to get better. 🤦♀️

I can only sleep around 4 hours, when I work nights and I've worked nights every other week for the last 24 years.

I used to go to bed at 11pm and be up at 5. And have no issues. Now? If I stay up to 11 I’m getting out of bed at 8. And I’m dragging all day

I started HGH 2 weeks ago and I sleep like a baby now. 49m.

Sleep study. Also are you a fan of creatine? I'm in deep deep peri so my sleep has gone to fuck. (And I'm on HRT, doing all the things) Creatine helps me the next when I've been up at night from being hot/having to pee. Bc yes, shit sleep takes like half a week for recovery for me.
North-Bit-7411@reddit
I find it fucked up that I require like half of the sleep I needed 5 years ago.
MaximumJones@reddit
What is this "sleep" you speak of?

I read somewhere that for every hour of lost sleep requires 8 more to make up. At this rate, it’ll take me about two years before I’m there
Malarkey5150@reddit
Have your doc test you for sleep apnea.
Ok_Command_9808@reddit
Have you done a sleep study? That shit changed my life for the better.
