I love seeing older folks still rocking

I went to see Bruce Springsteen last night, and I noticed this lady towards the bottom of the picture in a red, disco ball-looking jacket. I would guess she was around 70 years old.
While she needed a walker to steady herself, she was on her feet for almost all of the three-hour show - dancing and having a great time.
I'm 56 and love going to concerts. It was inspiring to see her having a blast. The future is bright.
MamaMidgePidge@reddit
We saw the Violent Femmes last fall. I sang and danced like I was 15 again but did comment to my husband "There sure are a lot of old people in this audience" lol
NtMagpie@reddit
Saw The Thomson Twin (only one member there) the B52s and Boy George a few years ago and thought the exact same thing.
gg0422@reddit
What are we supposed to suddenly listen to country when we grew up in the age of metal?
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
I was just sharing a pic of a lady that is a Boomer or Silent Generation who is still out there having fun at a show.
gg0422@reddit
Sorry X’er defending the tribe. Maybe got a little rambunctious. Kinda goes with brand. Still working on it.
Quick_Grapefruit2826@reddit
I'm 63 and I have always loved rock music. I love Metallica, ACDC, Seether; the louder the better. I think that I just have a personality that is well suited to rock music and that's not going to change with age.
PlantMystic@reddit
I can honestly say that we Xers are going to be really different in our "old age". We will break the mold that the oldsters used before.
ApprehensiveArt2813@reddit
We just saw Journey 2 weeks ago (photo, we stood at the rail for the show)and going to see Gene Simmons this weekend. I always stand and dance. I’ll be 60 next month, my hubby is 64. Concerts keep us young😎😎😎
crashin70@reddit
Wait....you are 60??? Never would have guessed that
ApprehensiveArt2813@reddit
Thank you! It’s part good genes and part refusing to get old🤘
atompierre@reddit
Well rock is older folks music now, so it makes sense.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
Always new rock bands coming along. Stadium acts in any genre are pretty rare now.
atompierre@reddit
I like a lot of newer rock bands (which means within the last ten years in this context) like Hello Mary, Coral Grief, Faetooth... Yeah there are always revivals and some kids get into it. Still rock is for older folks now. Percentage of youth into rock is way less than when today's old people were young. Which is great and the way it should be. Interesting note on the stadium acts. I haven't noticed or seen any data on that.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
I don’t have any data on stadium shows, but I went to a lot in the 80s and 90s at RFK Stadium in DC, as well as some in Philly and NY/NJ and it is wild to remember when big acts would basically have residencies - so many weeklong stretches of shows then from Springsteen, Grateful Dead, U2, Stones, etc.
martej@reddit
I think big rock concerts are going to be a thing of the past. They belong to Gen Y and older and will fade away over time. Most of the big arena shows are older bands playing their classic hits.
SunshynePower@reddit
Wow OP, did you know you were going to open up a can of worms over Springsteen and older rockers? Geez, bunch of whiners!!
I love this woman and I'm so happy to know that we all can show up for our fave bands. If they can put on a show then I can show up. I don't care who the band is, if you are a fan and can afford the tickets then GO!!!! 3 of the 4 members of my fave band are now dead. I saw the last 2 put on a show about 2 months before the 3rd one passed. I mean, we can't let these opportunities pass us by. I saw Paul McCartney last year. Is his voice the same? No. But was it good enough? Yes! Was it a great show? HELL YES!! I saw Cher and Barry Manilow several years ago and they were amazing! Those 2 aren't my fave artists but they are amazing and influenced so much of our music in the 70s and 80s. I'm currently planning a VERY short trip to Glasgow to see my 2nd fave band because the lead singer is probably not going to be able to tour much longer due to his health. Thank God for red eye flights so I can get some sleep LOL
ROCK ON GEN X!!
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
I figured this was just a happy story, it reddit always delivers some contrarians.
I love seeing any live music, and I have been making it a point to catch any legends I can, as well as going to cool venues.
SmokeyOSU@reddit
God, Springsteen sucks. Easily the most overrated "entertainer" ever
nosnevenaes@reddit
I'm not really into his type of music
..but I can definitely appreciate him. He has written a lot of songs. Good hard working performer. But most importantly he tries to be a normal every day people person type guy. Which is saying a lot for one of the biggest musical artists in pop music history.
And aside from all that - he does seem to promote a compassionate narrative out there. I'm sure that has resonated with a lot of people over the years.
Not into his music but I think he seems cool.
Anybody ever met him and he was a dick?
robandkel6200@reddit
What other generation can afford his ticket prices?
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
There are millennials in their 40s.
SalmonJordan@reddit
Loved that the last Stones tour was sponsored by AARP... they keep growing their fan base without losing any of us. Most people that are decades younger can't move like Mick. Inspiration, just like Bruce who wields his guitar like a natural appendage. Keep rockin'!
mom2ajs5@reddit
I saw David Byrne this weekend. He was so good! Still sounds the same!
enginerdsean@reddit
Geriatric rockers should just retire............it is embarrassing and cringeworthy. Have you heard Geddy Lee's voice lately all mono-tone and forced (my favorite band of all time!!)?..........have you seen Angus Young performances lately?............there are just so many that we just need to move on despite your nostalgia clinginess.
Oh, and Bruce Springsteen is the most overrated artist, ever.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
He still sounded good, so I am happy I went. Cool that you don't like him. I can't stand Rush, so we're even. I saw Sammy Hagar when he was 72, and his voice was still sharp. If the performers still sound alright and they are having fun, I'm all for them sticking around.
Ok-Cranberry-5582@reddit
Hard agree with Rush. Saw AC/DC last summer. I was a little older when Rush came out and never did think they were hard rock.
Ok-Cranberry-5582@reddit
Saw AC/DC last summer. I will admit Brian Johnson's voice wasn't as sharp but Angus kicked ASS!
bibdrums@reddit
I’m going to see Foo Fighters tomorrow night. I haven’t seen them before and I’m pretty excited.
enginerdsean@reddit
They put on a fantastic show. My son (27) and I (57) are going to Vegas in September to see them and QOTSA..........two of my favorite live bands in recent years.
biglinuxfan@reddit
They're great live. Enjoy!
Fight_Tyrnny@reddit
ya? Well... I went to FOREIGNER a month ago and most people were boomers and the entire audience were sitting down until the lead singer basically threatened to not play a song.
After that, at least the first half of the front sections stood up.
I was in the 8th row and the old boomer behind me had the balls to ask me to sit down during some of Foreigners hardest hitting ROCK songs...
Insanity.
doctor_machinegun@reddit
he probably had trouble standing and paid $275 for tix and wanted to see 😂
Fight_Tyrnny@reddit
Well, they were VIP tickets so they were more like $400. But no, when the lead singer asked the crowd to stand (5th song), he ate crow and was standing for the rest of the concert.
doctor_machinegun@reddit
sounds like a dickhead lead singer then 😂 if people want to sit, let them sit. especially when they are geriatric
Fight_Tyrnny@reddit
Nobody said people can’t sit. The point is that a hard rock front row sitting there like it’s bingo night kills the entire room. If the lead singer has to beg the front section for signs of life, that’s not “dickhead singer” energy — that’s a dead crowd getting called out for being dead.
... stop embarrassing yourself... jebus man... how old are you?
doctor_machinegun@reddit
if i pay for a ticket, i sit if i want to sit. anyone sitting has quite literally never “killed the room” you fool, lol
i mean sir, you went and saw Foreigner. anyone born after 1995 has heard “juke box hero” and “hot blooded” enough times to stab themselves in the ear. you must be a world class dildo to get mad at someone for not standing up to songs that were over played 30+ years ago 😂😂
Fight_Tyrnny@reddit
You paid for a ticket, not the right to drain the energy out of the front of a rock show and then act like everyone else is the problem.
And the “Foreigner is old” line is cute, but it also proves the point. Those songs are still packing rooms decades later while your big contribution to the night was sitting there like venue furniture and policing people who actually came to enjoy themselves.
Nobody said you can’t sit. Sit if you want. But don’t pretend the front of a hard rock show is improved by people folding into lawn-chair mode and acting smug about it. That’s not some brave personal choice. That’s just low-energy behavior with a receipt.
Also, calling someone a “world class dildo” because they expected a pulse at a rock concert is hilarious. You sound like the kind of person who goes to a fireworks show and complains it’s loud.
doctor_machinegun@reddit
never said the front row is improved by sitters, nor does it ruin the show either. and you have to, again, be a world class dildo to even care in the first place. anyone who believes that people sitting or standing ruins the show are dimwitted dipshits.
and Foreigner isnt packing out anywhere, sir. im not saying they suck, but to act like youre at some wicked hard rock show in the 70s is laughable. if you want to see a rock show with a “pulse”, that has ZERO to do with people standing or sitting and everything to do with the fact youre seeing a band where the only remaining member is a 80 LOL
Adventurous-Fee-8158@reddit
Had a lady tell me to sit down once at a Maiden show and I declined and rocked out even harder. The young kids and teens with their parents were awesome to see, and huge fans themselves. I will never not rock out.

Interesting. I saw Foregner last year and everyone was standing and singing along. It was a great show. I was a large mix of age groups though.

Same_Lack_1775@reddit
I went to see Phil Collins and he came out with a walker and sat do free n the d tire show
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
Was he able to play drums?
Same_Lack_1775@reddit
No. He didn’t even play/sing half the songs. He had his son on stage with him. It was a very disappointing experience overall
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
That sounds sad, sort of like Frankie Valli being sent on stage to lip sync and looking like he doesn’t know where he is.
Same_Lack_1775@reddit
It honestly was.
uptnogd@reddit
Saw the Eagles at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Fantastic sound and show.
Same_Lack_1775@reddit

beef-hed@reddit
It’s Springsteen, not Slayer. I like Bruce, but it’s not exactly a raucous mosh pit there.
REDDITSHITLORD@reddit
I watched DEVO last summer. They were AMAZING!
PissedCaucasian@reddit
Hate to break it to you OP but this is a Boomer band. I’d expect to see 65 year olds and up. You were the baby.
notevenapro@reddit
Meh. Born in the USA came out when some of us were in high school. Lots of bridge bands that appealed to both generations.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
I know, but I got into him with "Born in the U.S.A." and then liked the earlier stuff even more. There were a lot of 20-somethings there, too.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
You and I are on different planets. I cannot appreciate anything of this music. It’s okay though. Music is subjective. The bands I Listened to as a kid are now in their 60’s. It’s just the audience is still middle aged at least.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
Most of my favorites are in their 50s and 60s, but I like to see the classic stuff, too. One of my favorite local bands (Madam Radar), which I've seen three times in the last year, is all in their 20s, I think.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
This is the planet I’m on.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
I like about a third of those - saw Fugazi in the 80s in DC.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
I saw Fugazi in the 90s. My dream would’ve been to see Minor Threat. Like more than any band I can think of. Unfortunately I just missed them being 10 when they broke up and thinking music only existed on MTV at that age anyways. Biggest band I got to check off my list was Nirvana in 93.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
I grew up outside of DC and went there a lot for shows, but was a couple years too late for Minor Threat - I started going to shows around 85 or 86.
I saw Nirvana in fall 93 - at the time I figured I’d be seeing them many years into the future.
PissedCaucasian@reddit
Being from DC and not being into hardcore is crazy. It’s one of, if not the best Hardcore city. Discord Records put out legendary music. I’m in Chicago. It’s kinda become a hotbed for sludge. Try Bongripper and Russian Circles if you’re into it. Both huge here. Bongripper played last night but I couldn’t go.😭
JJQuantum@reddit
Unfortunately he’s not coming near me.
lordehumo@reddit

shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
Yeah, it is a pretty limited tour. Austin is the only TX stop and o met some people who came from Dallas and a guy who drove by himself from Kansas City.
denverbroncoharpman@reddit
Is Bruce really rocking out?
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
Nonstop for three hours, except a couple of times he would relax and chat with the crowd. Every time I thought he was going to take a breather, it was 1-2-3-4 and he was rocking again.
AlfaNovember@reddit
And tossing his guitar to the waiting roadie, so he doesn’t need to pause and walk the ten feet to the back of the stage. That Telecaster is about 8 pounds, he tosses it like nothing.
Bruce out-rocks guys less than half his age.
StOnEy333@reddit
There is nobody rocking harder than Bruce, and he’s 76. 3 fucking hours the guy plays. Nobody does that. It’s crazy.

We're going to see Joe Satriani and Steve Vai in a couple of weeks, and saw Shinedown back in August. We only do 1 or 2 a year just because it's become so expensive. We have the money, we just don't want to spend the money.
Apprehensive_Put4319@reddit
18 Springsteen shows since 1988…all of them Amazing.
U2 on another level from everyone in the late 80s/90s/early 2000s. Joshua Tree 2017 was impressive, The Sphere residence beyond incredible.
wyohman@reddit
If only people could put their phones away and enjoy the concert.
marshallkrich@reddit
I was surprised at how many people aren't filming.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
I was paying attention to that, and I think this show had the fewest people with phones out of any show I've seen in a long time. I just pulled mine out for a second for that pic.
marshallkrich@reddit
A pic is one thing, but people just record the whole show. I guess I'm just live the moment and not record the whole moment

I saw Judas Priest last year, and man, did they kick ass. A nice mix of old and young in the crowd as well. I'm 57, and I took my 18 and 21 year old sons with me.

Thanks, I got to see him at the ACL Festival in 2018 or 19 and that was really cool.
Opposite-Mushroom940@reddit
I can’t imagine paying hundreds to see an ancient Springsteen.
Chad_Hooper@reddit
I mean, these guys (and us) are getting to an age where the next opportunity you get to see them live may be the last one.
So we did spring for $300+ tickets apiece for Judas Priest in Fall 2024. Rob’s about 70 now and I think Ian is older than him. And Glenn’s been sidelined with Parkinson’s related health issues.
Just saying that I didn’t want to miss the opportunity because I might not have another one.
Opposite-Mushroom940@reddit
Could you even get any seats to Springsteen for 300?
Chad_Hooper@reddit
I’m not really interested in seeing him, so I don’t really know what the tickets for his shows cost beyond what’s been said in this thread.
There are very few bands left that I am willing to pay current ticket prices for, and Priest is probably at the top of my list.
MelodicGoatHerd@reddit
Agreed. Are you a kindred spirit who prefers to remember (and hear!) bands from your youth as they were rather than wheeling up in a chair?
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
Definitely a better voice when I saw him in the 80s but still fun seeing him and the E Street Band. And he was very active on stage - definitely not a chair guy.

UndrwhelmingGenitals@reddit
I hit the jamband scene these days, but my kid runs the gamut of everything else. In the past 4 years we've seen Iron Maiden, RATM, DK and earlier this month, Subhumans. All of them still pumping out insane energy.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
I was supposed to see RATM in Toronto in 2020 and then Covid. But last night Tom Morello was playing with Springsteen, so I got to see him play.
UndrwhelmingGenitals@reddit
Around 2018 we got back into live music a little bit, and we're actually going to see Weezer in Scotland (because why not!) when COVID shut everything down. That's when I really went all in on live shows because you never know when it will all be taken away from you. Saw Dead and Co on their final touring run, made the pilgrimage to Red Rocks, been to festivals and club shows... If I wasn't saving up to get my kid off to college I would be hitting up way more shows this summer. Looked up Weird Al last night, tickets start at $165, but maybe.....Like we always said - I'm here for a good time, not a long time! Enjoy life while you can.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
Red Rocks is a place I still need to go - I have wanted to see a show there since U2 did Under a Blood Red Sky.
I saw Dave Matthews at the Gorge nearly two years ago - that is a cool venue.

I recently saw Hells Belles, a Ladies AD/DC tribute band. The "Angus" gal...damn man, I wish I had her energy. She was perfect! I've heard of them for years in the pacific northwest, first show. They ROCKED IT!! I was sitting with my hubs (yeah, I don't do the standing anymore lol) and looked around at all the grey haired folks, us included.
We've clearly all aged a bit but dang, even if getting old sucks, we still JAM!!

Springsteen’s version of “War” hit No. 8 on the Billboard chart in 1986. Dude has been talking politics a long fucking time.
In 2026, 20,000 people a night show up to hear him talk about politics.
GreatOne1969@reddit
Of course he is entitled to his own opinions, but to use your platform to make bold comments risks alienating some fans. His choice. I feel the same about athletes, actors or writers.

I'm 51 and go to all kinds of shows with my 20 year old son. Mostly metal. I would have liked to check out the boss but I can't stand the Moody Center.
Lightningstruckagain@reddit
Moody Center is better than the Erwin Center was, which ain’t a high bar. But for the BiG Giant Acts, it’s either Moody or COTA and after the Stones debacle a years ago, I won’t ever go to a show there again.
Tinyberzerker@reddit
The other Moody venues are better. The theatre is fantastic. Saw Slayer there a while back. Went to COTA last year and it wasn't too bad. Saw Alice 2x and Priest. We had great seats.
Lightningstruckagain@reddit
The amphitheater at COTA is fine ( a bit far for me). I was at that Priest show, too. Im talking about the shows inside the race track area. Freakin’ nightmare.
Tinyberzerker@reddit
Oh. I haven't been inside the race track area. I did hear about the Stones traffic debacle. We live pretty close and I can see how a huge act could fubar the roads/traffic.

Yeah, I am not crazy about Moody Center, but I liked the place I sat last night - it was section 112 on the aisle (opposite end of the arena from the stage) and a quick walk up for bathrooms and food/drinks.

51 here. Just went to Slomosa last night, and few weeks back was lucky enough to see Puscifer.
Live music is where it's at. Always has been.

Gen-X baby. We hit 30 at age 9 and never left. Rock on (but only until like 10 pm. You know, it's almost bedtime.)

I don’t do concerts but I’m there in spirit. I would love to see Tool, David Gilmour, Metallica just one time

Nice list - I try to see the older bands and singers before they are gone. I saw the current versions of The Who, Robert Plant, and Dead & Company in the last few years.
The Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival is coming to Austin in September, and I'd love to get to that one, since I've never seen Clapton and he has an insane roster of guitarists joining him. I've seen some, like Gary Clark, Jr, John Mayer, and Pete Townshend, but the idea of seeing all of these guys together on stage looks awesome.

Saw him in Florida last week he put on a fantastic show

Glad to see fellow olds going to concerts. I’m 51 and I’d like to go to more but can’t bring myself to deal with crowds and cities and parking anymore. Oh I’m in good health, just trifling.

I don't like the crowds, but I live near downtown Austin, and it's a cheap Uber, so that makes it a lot easier.

Just, you know, avoid mosh pits.

I should have listened to that in 2019 when I went to see the Dead Milkmen. I quickly realized it's different than when I was 16.

The future of rocking out is bright if you can afford the tickets in retirement.
shawncollins512@reddit (OP)
Yeah, those Springsteen tickets were crazy expensive. Not something I would do regularly, but for acts I don't know if I will have a chance to see again, I'll do it. Otherwise, I mostly go to see local bands.

I saw Alice Cooper in Toledo last week. I am 48. Daughter is 13 and wife is 35. They were the youngest and everyone else was older than me. Older folks are definitely getting out there.

I was at the show in Portland, and it was identical to your experience. Lots of older people giving it their best. And the audience too.

I went to the Bruce concert in SF two weeks ago, and it was so heartening to see folks across generations. In my mid-50s, and I was middle of the age range there -- lots of folks older than me, and lots younger too! I loved seeing families there together, the parents clearly having passed on their love for Bruce to the next generation.
