Xbox elite controllers are way more expensive, and I've already had one go bad on me.
This sounds like another way to get away from Microslop
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
Huh? Just buy Gamesir. I had an old Steam Controller. That thing sucked. The pads were extremely... Useless.
leonredhorse@reddit
The old Steam controller is irrelevant. This one is basically a controller version of the Deck controls. Having this in this format is perfect for me. Plus you can take advantage of all the custom controller support profiles out there already.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
Why is it perfect for you?
Out of the box, the trackpads were configured terribly — D-pad mode by default, aggressive trackball physics, acceleration, and smoothing layered on top.
A real mouse has weight, a surface, and your whole hand for stability. The trackpads give your thumb nothing to anchor to — no center marker, no texture variation, no resistance. Your thumb constantly drifts off without any tactile feedback telling you where you are, leading to constant overshooting and misclicks.
How many profiles did you use until today? It was two for me (Xbox and Switch), so... Thats no real benefit imo either.
leonredhorse@reddit
It just sounds like you have some personal preferences that don’t seem to be shared by most users. I didn’t find any major issues with how it was configured by default, but the Deck had a lot of flexibility to create a control scheme that works for you.
And I used a fair number of community profiles. It just depends on the game and what I wanted to do. Used them for tweaks to some strategy games, or setting up control schemes for WoW or GW2.
The controller won’t replace mouse and keyboard for most games at my desk, but the real benefit will come from a better living room computer or just replacing the times I use an XBOX controller with using one of these. An additional benefit is I’m on Linux and a Steam controller will be much better supported than some alternatives.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
You got a statistic that proves you right? Just cause I know nobody that actually used it and found it really useful in my peer group.
The Linux driver support is a myth at best, I would say. Most Controller are supported ootb on Linux, even low budget is usually no problem. The only issue that can happen are some propietary Bluetooth modules.
Propietary is a good keyword tho. Valves Hardware tends to loose even more value if you navigate outside of Steam, which is even more a sign its not the right choice if you use free Software. (tried it on CachyOS, Bazzite and Mint)
Its just another try to vendor lock you in even more into their System. Something that is very contradictory to Linux, actually. But thats another layer, beyond the technical.
leonredhorse@reddit
Statistic for what exactly? Default controller layout? Using community profiles?
Either or, no, I don't have a specific statistic. Very few people discussing Steam Deck seem to complain about the default OOTB controller setup so that is the basis of that "assumption." As for community profiles, you asked me a personal question and so I shared a personal answer.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
Yes, all of them. I love statistics. If someone doesn't have them its hard to say stuff like "very few people (...) complain".
In my opinion its a lot. A lot more then people that dont.
But with the Deck as such its a good example how the "Valve Bubble" works. The Deck as such, sold about 4-5 million times. A huge success!! Right?
Well, I also own a PS Vita - on of the biggest failures ever made by Sony. They just sold about three times as much consoles as Valve 😅
Anyways, critics also often enough wrote that the V1 was disappointing in the least. E.g.
https://www.pcgamesn.com/the-steam-controller-is-fascinating-ambitious-and-a-nightmare-to-use
So your opinion is not broader accepted then mine, I would say.
leonredhorse@reddit
Are we getting confused on what we are talking about? I do t care about the first Steam controller at all. It’s irrelevant. I’m talking about Steam Deck controls which this new one is based off of. I don’t k ow why you’re linking me articles about the first controller. That’s like saying the Steam Deck or Steam Machine or SteamOS is bad because of that first Steam Box or whatever. Those weren’t good attempts and now things are better.
nem8@reddit
They cost about the same?
hungarian_notation@reddit
Yeah, the old one was super disappointing. I tried using it once and then put it on a shelf.
FacepalmFullONapalm@reddit
It’s pointless to compare the newer trackpads to the old steam controllers as the changes brought to it are lifted straight from the Steam Deck, which would be more accurate.
random-user-420@reddit
Or just buy an 8bitdo with Hall effect joysticks. This Steam controller is overpriced af
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Does it have four extra buttons on the back that can be reassigned on a per game basis? Nope. Only the steam deck and the steam controller can do that with steam input.
ainen@reddit
The Ultimate 2 has two extra buttons on the back, and two extra buttons up top. It supports gyro and is fully compatible with Steam Input.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Going to be real. As cool as that is, having four extra buttons on the back is a lot more convenient for games where your fingers need to be on the analog sticks constantly. But that is pretty nifty.
ainen@reddit
The two extra buttons on the top are between R1/R2 and L1/L2. In no way do they interfere with your fingers being on the analog sticks.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Oh, ok, weird choice but sounds good.
F9-0021@reddit
The vast, vast majority of people don't care about buttons on the back.
oddbin@reddit
That's an opinion for sure.
Mccobsta@reddit
I didn't until I got a deck and now it's kinda hard to not have them
trickman01@reddit
I never use the ones on my Deck.
Standard-Potential-6@reddit
I use the ones on my Deck instead of the face buttons, which are looser.

Whistling innocently in savescum
newsflashjackass@reddit
If you just want a basic controller this is a good no-frills option.
https://gamesir.com/collections/all-products-1/products/gamesir-t7
I have the G7 and I never use the extra buttons on the back so the T7 would have been just as good in my case. The Hall Effect analog sticks are as good as promised. They don't drift and they do not have a dead zone. The d-pad is acceptable for a hat switch but it is inconsistent about entering cardinal directions.
1xltP3mgkiF9@reddit
Also two amazing touchpads.
astronometrics@reddit
This is the selling point for me. I'm more than happy using a plethora of console controllers, eg switch pro or xbox one.
The killer feature for me is the touchpads. If i got one i think i'd end up using it more as a compact convenient mouse on my couch than for gaming. But it also opens the doors for games i wouldn't have considered using a controller to play before.
aesvelgr@reddit
I play all of my games using a combination of both the Steam Deck and the 8bitdo ultimate 2 controller. I can tell you from personal experience that this Steam Controller will likely feel much more premium in the hands and will be of much higher build quality than the 8bitdo.
Whether someone purchases this controller depends on how much they’re willing to spend for build quality and extra features. I would compare this controller to the Xbox Elite Controller moreso than I would with the 8bitdo ultimate.
ImBoredToo@reddit
They've also teamed up with iFixit for replacement parts.
nahman201893@reddit
I was watching the GN review and they stayed as much. I'm excited! Looks pretty well thought out.
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
A 100$ is wild lol. Compared to the other from Game consoles It isn't that high if they include magnetic joysticks and other stuff. But there are way cheaper controllers that already include good quality componentd
CptSpeedydash@reddit
It's a bit high but it's Valve's equivalent to the Xbox elite series, which causes the price to make more sense.
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
Still third party controllers are cheaper than whatever Sony, Xbox and Nintendo offer but with better quality
Even if it's at the same level as Xbox, third parties keep creating better ones, so It makes no sense to buy Valve's one unless you want these specific features (that are cool, don't get me wrong, these mouse like features on controllers are original and sound good) but for anyone else it's a nonsense
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
They suck, believe me. You cant play well with it, didn't use it after trying it out on the old Controller. It sounds a lot better then it is. Miles away from even a 10€ Mouse.
nem8@reddit
Trackpads seem to work fine on deck. And this isn't for people who can use a mouse, its for those who can't. Couchgamers etc.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
Valve even build its own OS so, that you can use it with a controller alone. Not good, but okayish. The pads deliver no real convenience.
nem8@reddit
Maybe not for you. But there is a market for this even if you don't need it.
Im baffled by the response to this from a subset of gamers so narrowminded that they can't even imagine usecases where this is nice to have.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
There is a market for everything, lol. You can literally buy "games" for $100,000 just to get one achievement that tells you that you own a game.
Doesn’t mean it makes a lot of sense.
Just like this feature. The trackpads give your thumb nothing to anchor to — no center marker, no texture variation, no resistance. Your thumb constantly drifts off without any tactile feedback telling you where you are, leading to constant overshooting and misclicks.
Its not about being narrowminded, its about not liking overpriced stuff that sucks in precision and adds no real value.
When games expect a right analogue stick (camera control, 3rd-person games), the trackpad falls apart completely — imprecise, sluggish, requiring constant thumb repositioning every few seconds etc. It just sucks.
Bottom line: for the price and the form factor, a cheap mouse just wins — no amount of Steam Input configuration changes the fundamental physics of thumb-vs-hand precision. And if you have none: Just use an analogue stick as mouse if you really need to, lol.
The thing is basically not even mediocre in everything it tries to be... 😅
nem8@reddit
Its not meant to replace a thumbstick tho. Its meant to replace a mouse in situations where you can't use a mouse. Thats what i mean when I say it seems some people are very narrow minded. You don't seem capable of grasping the fact that some people want to play games without controller support, in situations where a m/kb is not practical.
The pads are used in those specific situation. They are not used instead of sticks.
Look, I'm not ruling one way or another on how comfortable/good the controller is. It gets some praise from tech reviewers but it remains to be seen how good it really is. And the price point isn't really in hurting territory if the gamepad is good.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
I just very much dislike low quality stuff and in terms of usability it was the worst quality I literally ever experienced.
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
I mean, the features is optional. Maybe some would like It, plus looks worse than standars controllers for some games developed for mouse
dimspace@reddit
What controller has four back buttons, hall effect+, touchpads, and 30 hours battery life for $100?
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
I have the gamesir cyclone 2 which is cheaper and comes with gyro. Doesn't have touchpads but, again, you get a gyro instead and compatibility with Nintendo and it's not 65$. And there are cheaper controllers with hall effect, I found at least once at less than 40$
dimspace@reddit
So it doesn't have four back buttons and doesn't have the touchpads.
I asked what controller had those
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
It has 2 back buttons. First of all, a button on the back doesn't cost 20$
And second, the touchpads means no d-pad. Which is an issue for fighting games, which are the only ones that are adaptes for controllers for PC. Most other genres (except platforming games) have no Support for controllers or at least good Support. And this controllers ignores these games
dimspace@reddit
uh?
2eedling@reddit
And they are trash most good third party controllers cost well over $100
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
You didn't tried any of them I see...
2eedling@reddit
I have lol bought a cheap knock off $25 wired Xbox controller died in a week
OliM9696@reddit
Okay, sure if you buy shit you get shit but a control from 8bitdo will be high quality and work for years.
I just don't see trackpads much much of a value add.
nem8@reddit
Pads are for playing m/kb games, think civ etc. They replace a mouse much better than what a thumbstick does.
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
Lets delete a feature for games build for controller to put instead an alternative for games without controller support
ainen@reddit
They’re also great for custom menus which essentially gives you a lot more buttons
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
Brother you said that if you want a quality controller you need 100% and then you justify your answer on a shitty 25$ controller
There are things in between around 50$ that are high quality buddy
F9-0021@reddit
That is not how Valve pitched it though. It was supposed to be the controller for the Steam Machine, implying that it would be their standard controller and a response to the other consoles' standard controllers. Xbox doesn't just make the Elite controller. The reason that people like myself were interested in it in the first place was because we assumed it would be around the price of a Dualsense, maybe a little bit more. If they said that "hey guys, this is our Pro level controller for rich sweats", then it would have been much less disappointing but also much less exciting.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
I'm sure the controller can work with other programs, especially if they use input plumber. Which apparently even steam uses now.
nem8@reddit
You make it sound like its expensive as fuck. It isn't. Its 25-30% more than a standard Xbox controller, or about 50-80% of an elite controller (depending on where you buy).
Its not cheap, I get that, but its not insanely expensive either. It has more features than ie the elite, that's not free.
There are other options if you find it to be too much tho, but you will need to drop some features.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
Valve is the devil incarnate. The fanboys are delusional as fuck. 😅
dimspace@reddit
Show me a controller with four back buttons at less than $100
Ok-Winner-6589@reddit
Bro you really think 2 buttons increase the prices a 100%?
You have controllers with hall effect on both sticks and triggers, 2 back buttons and gyro for 50$
eugay@reddit
They're not good enough for a TV pc. a mouse is needed
OliM9696@reddit
It is really much better than an 8bitdo 2c ultimate?
I just can't see spending that much for trackpads which I hardly use on the steam deck.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Don't forget the four extra buttons on the back that can be reassigned on a per game basis. Only the Xbox Elite controller can do that and it's garbage from what I hear.
OliM9696@reddit
Inst the 8bitdo supported by steam input natively?
And anygame can be remapped per game with steam input. It's one of the primary benefits of using a controller on PC.
dimspace@reddit
Did you miss where they asked if it has four extra back buttons?
russjr08@reddit
Yes, it has two back paddle buttons.
dimspace@reddit
Two is four? Good to know
russjr08@reddit
Don't be coy. Where did I say that?
I was clarifying that it does still have back paddle buttons in general. The root comment wasn't really about the number of buttons, it was about the presence of any and whether they were steam input compatible. Which it checks both of those boxes.
Even your other in a separate comment chain that I also answered merely only asked whether it has back paddles.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
8-bitdo controllers only have two extra buttons
Eskavy@reddit
My 8BitDo Ultimate 2 can do that, too. Just need to set it to D-Input.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
Dang, last night checked, third party controllers couldn't do that. That's awesome!
dimspace@reddit
You can also get controller mods. All my dual sense have four back paddles. But granted. That involves opening the controller and some light soldering 🤣
teinimon@reddit
If you don't need it, don't get it
OliM9696@reddit
I mean, duh but if I'm getting it as a gift for someone is it worth the £50 extra if all they play are single player open worlds.
dimspace@reddit
Does the 8bit do have back paddles?
Honestly, as someone who plays 90% single player open worlds getting sprint off of L3 and onto a back paddle is worth it 🤣
russjr08@reddit
The 8bitdo ultimate 2 that I have does (one on each side), which supports steam input and can be mapped like the deck's can.
There's also an extra button between the trigger and shoulder button on each side that can also be mapped.
OliM9696@reddit
It has 2 back paddles and 2 extra buttons by the triggers and bumpers.
Using the back paddles/grip buttons for jump and sprint is useful.
The extra button by the bumper I use as the grenade type switch in Halo.
Resource_account@reddit
You answered your question. It comes down to how much you value the trackpads.
Indolent_Bard@reddit
And four extra buttons on the back that can be remapped on a per game basis. Only the Xbox Elite controller can do that.
Toorero6@reddit
Please let them provide firmware updates via LVFS.
FoxTrotte@reddit
Holy shit that's expensive
MelioraXI@reddit
Most gamepads are pretty expensive these days. IIRC PS5 dualsense is still around 80.
FoxTrotte@reddit
My 30€ 8BitDo would not agree
Decimit-@reddit
Very different things.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
What justifies the extra cost? Spoiler: It certainly isn’t the poor mouse emulation
2eedling@reddit
How do you know the mouse emulation is poor have you used it lol the steam deck is pretty good and this should have similar tech
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
Yes, I did cause I had a Steam Deck... And it was gruesome. "pretty good" is a 10€ Mouse... That is still more precise then the pads were, lol.
ainen@reddit
The trackpads can do far more than just mouse emulation
FoxTrotte@reddit
Yeha I get that it's very different from the Steam Controller but 99$ is just way too much even for what it offers
IbeatHalo2Legendary@reddit
I'm guessing you're talking about the 8bitdo ultimate 2c, right? I think the steam controller has more things going on inside of it than even the ultimate 2 wireless.
It's got a gyro, two trackpads, capacitive touch sensors in the handles, and backpaddles. Also consider the parts market is fucked rn.
Granted most people don't care about most of these, but to those who are interested it might be worth it.
2eedling@reddit
That’s a low end controller meant for someone who uses it from time to time and doesn’t want something good
ChuuniSaysHi@reddit
And the switch 2 pro controller is like $90
joestradamus_one@reddit
Not really.
RonWeez@reddit
Do we know if it will only be sold via Valve? I have some bestbuy reward certificates Id like to use

You would have to pay me $99 to use this lol
tulpyvow@reddit
won't be getting it immediately (have a perfectly serviceable switch pro controller atm) but i very much like the look of it.
plus, $100 USD is honestly lower than i expected, given how fucked component pricing is atm.
half_true@reddit
Does the switch pro controller work natively with linux?
Godninja@reddit
It works natively with Steam Input and through Bluetooth. Used it on my Steam Deck with no issues. I haven’t had a chance to use it on my Linux Desktop, however.
tulpyvow@reddit
I've actually never gotten it to work via bluetooth, it would go haywire and send a boat load of inputs every second. I just use it wired on my steam deck using the dock (since I only play docked)
Global__Meaning@reddit
would drive me insane when a button prompt in game says “press x” and you’re pressing y.
biteableniles@reddit
There's a setting for that in the controller config, to swap the buttons around.
Global__Meaning@reddit
not in most games that default to show xbox layout
acdcfanbill@reddit
From the Gamers Nexus coverage, you should probably use the included puck for wireless use instead of bluetooth for latency reasons.
ainen@reddit
They’re talking about the Switch Pro controller.
please_respect_hats@reddit
It doesn’t have analog triggers, which is very limiting, especially for emulation.
Mds03@reddit
It works with Steam Input. Not sure it’s playable with non steam Linux games, but I wouldn’t expect the steam controller 2 to do that either. With steam controller 1 I can not play games on say, epic game store or Xbox game pass without third party software for remapping
BronzeLogic@reddit
Yes it does. And not just with steam, but also emulators.
echosofverture@reddit
I have used it with Steam and geforce now on Debian and it works well enough. Dont think I had to do much to get it going.
SomnambulicSojourner@reddit
I haven't tried pairing it with my laptop which runs PopOS! with the Cosmic DE, but I pair my switch pro controller with my steam deck all the time and never had to do anything extra to get it to work properly. So I think if you are using it with Steam in linux it should be just fine.
Slow_Pay_7171@reddit
Buy Gamesir, for example. This thing is massively overpriced.
jazzy663@reddit
I'd imagine Valve cut their margins as razor-thin ass they could, like they did with the Deck.
yawara25@reddit
Why did they give it the same exact name as the one that came out in 2015?
nhaines@reddit
Because nobody remembers that one.
I have two or three that I never use (I bought two more when they were $4) and they're fantastic, but for most games I prefer to just use my Switch 2 Pro Controller. (Or my Switch 2, for that matter.)
Fantastic controller. I've only held a Steam Deck twice in my life, so I assume they have great inputs and I wouldn't mind a new Steam Controller but again... never really use the one I have or the Xbox controller.
Cold_Soft_4823@reddit
yes they absolutely do, what a stupid thing to say
MirLivesAgain@reddit
I was surprised when I went to sell mine a few years ago. I got paid over retail for it. I think there's a dedicate group of people who really like them.
nhaines@reddit
It was the kind of innovation I only really expect from Nintendo. Even text input was shockingly efficient. And while I never did catch on to using it for Age of Empires 2, but Portal 2 and Borderlands 2 were just as good with the Steam Controller as with keyboard and mouse. And while it eventually failed, the Steam input customization makes console controllers super versatile as well, and I always sort of admired Valve pulling all that work forward for other controllers instead of just being bitter that their own controllers didn't sell.
Irverter@reddit
Same with the Steam Machine
MonkAndCanatella@reddit
A little high price for sure, but seems like a great controller. Just wish it had adaptive triggers. For that price they definitely could've added the feature. Then PC devs would have more reason to actually support it.
Cautiousdream71@reddit
That ain't worth 99$ I'm sorry I'll keep using my PS1 controller
noAnimalsWereHarmed@reddit
Pre analog sticks I hope
Cautiousdream71@reddit
no, the PSX one
aew-superfan@reddit
Plan to order as soon as it's available!
Berny23@reddit
Price is reasonable for a high-end controller.
I'll buy it just to have it available. I doubt it replaces my Gulikit KK3 Max or all the Nintendo Online Controllers, but you never know.
The Gyro is something nice that's missing from Gulikit in Xbox mode, so that's nice. Also, my only controller with a touchpad is the PS5 thing. Very rarely use it though.
Dry_Potato1293@reddit
Ok I dont really care about the price but is it just me or does this controller look really uncomfortable? If I want to reach the ABXY buttons I would have to strech my thumb up or curl it in an odd shape. On my Switch Pro controller those buttons are much further left
stogie-bear@reddit
$99? I guess if you really love the steam deck trackpads...
Indolent_Bard@reddit
And 4 extra remappable buttons on a per game basis. Outside of the seam deck, only the Xbox Elite controller can do that currently.
non-existing-person@reddit
I'm not sure about left analog and d-pad placement. I've been playing on xbox style controller my whole life, and ps style just feels wrong for me now. I wonder how's that gonna feel.

2eedling@reddit
They made it more like the Xbox controller cause it’s just a better shape even the manufacturer realized that lmao you just have a preference

Yes, everyone has a preference. Things like "better shape" and "more ergonomic" are just subjective preference.

After tax, $170cad is toooooooo steep. It's unfortunate.
StarTroop@reddit
It's high, but as a fan of the first Steam Controller, and who has long awaited for anything better with the same level of flexibility and freedom, there is literally no competition. For years I've regularly looked at other controller options, both expensive and economical, yet I've found nothing that meets my requirements, so even $170 for the one controller that seems to be almost pulled from my dreams, I'll just have to find a way to justify it. To be honest, for the amount of use I've gotten out of the first controller, I feel like I underpaid for it, so paying a little extra for a big upgrade isn't that bad.

It’s so fucking awesome, I really like it. I’ve already seen some reviews, and they all mention the price, saying it’s more expensive than a basic Xbox or PlayStation controller. But honestly, those aren’t the real competitors. Both the feature set and the build quality are way above those. It’s more in the same league as the Elite and Edge controllers, the premium lines from PlayStation and Xbox. And I can confidently say it’s way better and cheaper than the overpriced garbage that Razer sells.
MrWeirdoFace@reddit
Waiting for that 60% off sale.
