Microsoft Presents "TRELLIS.2": An Open-Source, 4b-Parameter, Image-To-3D Model Producing Up To 1536³ PBR Textured Assets, Built On Native 3D VAES With 16× Spatial Compression, Delivering Efficient, Scalable, High-Fidelity Asset Generation.
Posted by 44th--Hokage@reddit | LocalLLaMA | View on Reddit | 75 comments
TRELLIS.2 is a state-of-the-art large 3D generative model (4B parameters) designed for high-fidelity image-to-3D generation. It leverages a novel "field-free" sparse voxel structure termed O-Voxel to reconstruct and generate arbitrary 3D assets with complex topologies, sharp features, and full PBR materials.

I am going nuts
Relative_Bit_7250@reddit
Model was released four months ago.
michaelsoft__binbows@reddit
Has it been this good for this long? Wow
Relative_Bit_7250@reddit
Yeah, it's pretty much the best when talking about 3D generative models. The only problem is that it's a real pain in the ass to install, at least on Linux, don't know about Windows. I'm still managing to make it work inside a comfyui environment to this day.
EbbNorth7735@reddit
I've been working on getting it working for the last two days on Windows with Qwen3.6 27B. I keep whipping harder and harder but Qwen just can't seem to get it right
Relative_Bit_7250@reddit
Eh, good luck. Tried the same thing with Gemini 3 pro, deepseek, Claude... Nothing. Gemini kept giving me the old "you're perfectly right" or "I understand your frustration". No, Gemini, you don't. You really don't.
OptimizeLLM@reddit
It was a couple months ago now, but Opus 4.6 one-shot the Trellis.2 install as part of an experiment making a VR interface for Trellis using Godot. Worked fine on Ubuntu
Exciting_Variation56@reddit
Please tell me more this is my whole shiz I’m tryna use Godot for game dev ad AI can help reduce the time to working model but I want to be conscious of impact on the power grid and be a responsible local hosted
MINIMAN10001@reddit
I mean isn't it usually more energy efficient to outsource due to horizontal scaling increasing relative throughput? I always assumed that's why they can do it cheaper. Just be aware of how much money you're spending and you should more or less have a general understanding of your electrical cost.
Exciting_Variation56@reddit
Cheaper yes absolutely
But not better for people. The servers hosting these are repeatedly shown to be detrimental to the surrounding environments and communities
mirror_truth@reddit
Data centers are more efficient than anything you can run at home, just like generating electricity at a power station then transmitting it to millions of homes is more efficient than everyone running a generator in their backyard.
Exciting_Variation56@reddit
I agree again
And yet supporting those data centers pollutes their nearby waters, hurts the surrounding communities, and supports financially companies I don’t agree with
More-Curious816@reddit
Since you got it working, how was the quality of the outputs? Also how much vram it ate
EbbNorth7735@reddit
The models just started loading on my HW. I don't know if the model server was successful yet but I'd like to pretend it got there.
MedicalScore3474@reddit
Looks like someone else already did it, but the repository authors haven't reviewed/merged it yet: https://github.com/microsoft/TRELLIS.2/pull/100
EbbNorth7735@reddit
I need to not rely on AI so much. This looks necessary. I'll look into pulling it into my docker file
michaelsoft__binbows@reddit
the 27B are smart but not smart enough to be worth the time trying to build bleeding edge software like this with...
EbbNorth7735@reddit
Haha what? I've built a few pretty good apps
michaelsoft__binbows@reddit
i'm not saying it's impossible but it's kinda like mowing a football field with a push mower. Go ahead and knock yourself out if that's what you really wanna do.
EbbNorth7735@reddit
If 6 minths ago we thought Opus 4.5 was amazing I'm not sure why we wouldn't think the latest models are unusable
eugene20@reddit
That's brilliant news. The last version I tried the other day was a comfy install but it needed python 3.12 because of open3D, this talks specifically of 3.13 when compiling so I have high hopes.
(There is a comfy easy-install version but I would like to avoid having two comfy installs)
44th--Hokage@reddit (OP)
You can one-shot the install on Opus 4.6 on the API.
KURD_1_STAN@reddit
I had many many issues with it but it was fixed with getting an older comfyui with python 3.12 because some wheels or something didnt exist for something, i dont remember correctly. Altho the quality is mehh, it isnt bad but nothing to be praised for( i haven't used others so idk how good something is compared to others). Also connecting it to ultrashape fixes a lot of stuff but man does it need vram and is so fing slow
eposnix@reddit
This guy's comfyui installer got me 90% there. I had a few errors that i called in GPT-5.5 to fix.

LetsGoBrandon4256@reddit
holy kek
TheRealMasonMac@reddit
Damn. Those subreddits look like they belong to nutjobs who smoke too much weed.
LetsGoBrandon4256@reddit
I was about to suggest OP try /r/singularity then I saw the sidebar of the sub he moderates.
lmao even
44th--Hokage@reddit (OP)
People like it. There's a lot of animosity towards AI online and r/accelerate is space created to be a reprieve from the toxicity where people who are excited about the technology can be excited about the technology together.
TheRealMasonMac@reddit
There is an important difference between excitement and zealotry. When I go to that subreddit and sort by the top posts this month, I see an egregious amount of misinformation, ungrounded speculation, and deification of tech CEOs. This comes across as practically a cult.
LetsGoBrandon4256@reddit
lmao the replies you are getting.
OP's buddies are here.
Xilors@reddit
We are gonna need some examples of misinformation/deification, because for now it seems your the one misinforming peoples.
Hubbardia@reddit
Can you point to some examples? Blatant misinformation? Deification of CEOs?
44th--Hokage@reddit (OP)
This is what I see when I organize by top of the month:
https://i.imgur.com/30Qelz2.jpeg
It doesn't seem much different than any other tech sub on reddit.
quinn50@reddit
for one this is a LLM focused reddit, /r/StableDiffusion would be better
TurpentineEnjoyer@reddit
I didn't know about it, I thought Hunyuan3D 2.1 was the best available option because I just go off what ComfyUI has a template for ordered by newest.
So thanks for bringing it to my attention. I swear to god people on this subreddit can get utterly miserable sometimes. God forbid a model could get discussed more than once.
luckyj@reddit
Sure, but "Microsoft presents" is a bit misleading
Relative_Bit_7250@reddit
Would have preferred you didn't use the "New Model" tag.
Appropriate-Bar-8932@reddit
I tested this out last year. Why is this post upvoted? I checked the repo now and it's not updated. I expect they are working on Trellis.3 ?

Why?
Timely-Coffee-6408@reddit
My friend is doing projects to convert speech to image to 3d model to unit game
44th--Hokage@reddit (OP)
Honestly, keep me posted, too. That sounds imminently useful.
Borkato@reddit
Incredible!
05032-MendicantBias@reddit
I couldn't run it with torch/ROCm
Monkeylashes@reddit
yeah I'm confused, hasn't this been out for months now?
FORLLM@reddit
For a lot of us, when models are first released they're nigh unusable. Limited instructions, discussion, howtos, integrations, low vram workarounds, etc. I wish all announcements were months late after there was some ecosystem development already done.
Innomen@reddit
Plus the demo works nice and fast. (once, before tapping out on usage)
FinBenton@reddit
Idk, I remember when this was launched, I got it working on comfyUI right away on linux with some random workflow someone on youtube posted first try, played with it a bit but I wasnt super happy with the quality back then, maybe the implementation is better now. It was decent on simple stuff but complicated characters were kinda messy.
DinoAmino@reddit
Yeah, I searched and saw posts here asking about it but no real announcement type of thing. Seems to have slipped by.
FineClassroom2085@reddit
Are people finding this much better than Hunyuan 3d?
_raydeStar@reddit
from what is open sourced -- it's pretty comparable. Closed source hunyuan I believe is better, but I haven't played with it too much.
mouseofcatofschrodi@reddit
isn't there any way to run it on mac?
xrvz@reddit
where phi 5 tho
DeepBlue96@reddit
you live better without it, all the phi were extremely low Q.
rm-rf-rm@reddit
This is an old model. But based on the community reaction, it is news to most people. So leaving the post up.
DeepBlue96@reddit
Thanks I thought i was crazy to feel like it came out along time ago. Still the texture it generates are atrocious.
JohnSnowHenry@reddit
Hy-3d 3.1 is far superior to trellis 2
EmuMammoth6627@reddit
I was never able to get close to the model quality shown in that video, even when using something like ultrasharp on top.
_Iggy_Lux@reddit
Same even the image used and examples look way lower quality when I try to recreate their stock assets.
Agent-Vigilence@reddit
Can run on gpus with as low as 8gb - https://www.reddit.com/r/StableDiffusion/comments/1ssx9wg/i_optimized_trellis2_to_fit_inside_8gb_gpus_even/
DeedleDumbDee@reddit
Are they going to support ROCm because right now all I’m seeing is CUDA in the docs
kkessler64@reddit
I got Claude to get it to run in ROCm in comfyui https://github.com/kevinkessler/ComfyUI-TRELLIS2 . It was my first experience with Claude Code, and I'll be damned, it works. I running it on a Strix Halo device using this toolbox: https://github.com/kyuz0/amd-strix-halo-comfyui-toolboxes .
