Wish the 300 win mag version was the price of 308.

Got my first elk with a Weatherby .308, they make great rifles. I’m VERY tempted to get this. Great price!
Trope360@reddit
These are essentially Howa 1500's correct? My brother got one in 6.5cm with fluted barrel and bolt, threaded, it looked nice and felt solid but I haven't gotten to shoot it.
LafayetteShooters@reddit (OP)
I’d say they are not far off from each other. The vanguard is a great entry level “do it all” kind of rifle. Nothing fancy, but functions as intended.
Trope360@reddit
Yeah I guess I worded that poorly, it's not exactly a 1500 but the receiver / action is made by Howa in Japan correct? I know the Vanguard was but not sure when your inventory dates from as I also thought they had fluted bolts standard (the howa made ones at least)
LafayetteShooters@reddit (OP)
Yes they are made in Japan by Howa. As far as the fluting goes, I can only attest to what I have on hand and the information that weatherbys website provides, with that said I do not believe the “obsidian” sub-model of the vanguard series is fluted. This inventory was purchased last year so things may changed since then.
Trope360@reddit
Fluting wise, I think maybe it's an interpretation of what they list on their website - the Vanguard they say [different from spiral fluting or showy fluting that we're used to] "A fluted bolt body similar to the Mark V creates smoother operation when the rigors of the hunt leave the rifle dusty and dirty." so I think there are lines cut into the bolt bottom so it slides better, and they call that fluting which isn't wrong. Like a sandcutter AR bolt, people are used to the KAK / Centurion design but others are way more subtle but still have a little notch for a similar function. This has a function more than "pretty spiral fluting" we're used to.
These are threaded too right? I believe this model is. Good value at this price.
LafayetteShooters@reddit (OP)
Yep, you are exactly right. The “fluting” feels like it’s barely .010, just able to scratch it with your nail, so definitely not the traditional fluting our minds think about. Standard 1/2x28 thread, great gun that you can treat like a tool.
Trope360@reddit
1/2x28 for 308? Are you sure? Standard for 308 is generally 5/8x24 :) I'm not in the market but love a responsive vendor and getting these details on there so people can see some more value here - they're well thought out for what they are (nobody complains about buying a rebranded Howa 1500 with threaded barrel at this price, basically).
daffydubs@reddit
Not to hijack this thread anymore, but the 1/2x28 is correct. These barrels are slimmer than most so there’s not enough “meat” to put a 5/8x24. There are a few manufacturers that still do this in addition to weatherby, but it helps keep the gun light. Would need an adapter though if your mounts are all 5/8x24
Trope360@reddit
That's what I was thinking, thin barrel more than "I doubt it" and "double checking" - my Tikka with the fluted pencil barrel in 6.5CM is 1/2x28 (I had it custom threaded by a gunsmith) so that's the only reason I was clarifying, I'm just used to when it comes standard from factory it's 5/8x24 - Rearden (plan b) does a 1/2x28 in 7.62 for those looking at cans.
LafayetteShooters@reddit (OP)
Hey guys sorry just seeing this, weatherby makes a #2 contour which is 1/2 and #3 contour which is 5/8. Barrel adapters are tricky, we always recommend locktite+checking alignment/concentricity. Back to the barrel, I’ve seen a lot of 30 cal 1/28 threads from Christensen Arms as well, which creates a pain since 99% of suppressor manufacturers only include 5/8 in the box or on the can for 30cal products.
Trope360@reddit
Man thanks for this info, super insightful. You're an awesome dealer here to go this in depth! I wouldn't hesitate from buying from you.
The one note, is that on muzzle brakes you generally do not want to use loctite as the normal flavors are not temperature rated to the heat especially a brake with a can will experience. Rocksett (or Vibra-Tite Hot-Lock is the cheaper alternative) is better because both are very heat tolerant (like 2000°F) as that's not the way you "break it free" like loctite - but instead it breaks free by putting it in boiling water, so you can still remove it if needed.
DugnutttBobson@reddit
What kind of range do you think it can do? I know nothing about long range shooting but a friend of my brother wants to get into it and might appreciate this gun
daffydubs@reddit
Are you looking for plinking or killing? It’s not unheard of to plink a 308 out to 1000 yds, but if you’re using it for hunting, IMO, 400 yds would be at stretch for hunting. But they can go farther - just have goo glass and understand your dynamics
DugnutttBobson@reddit
I think they're distance limited by their range choice to 400 or 600 yards. They'd be target shooting.
daffydubs@reddit
308 is a fine round to plink with at that range. But there are better options
Honest_Knee_6510@reddit
This is not a good rifle for long range target shooting. It's a hunting rifle through and through.
Tell your buddy to get a Howa (heavy) barreled action from Brownells and put it in an MDT or KRG stock. 6.5 Creedmoor is a vastly superior target caliber over .308. A competent shooter can take a 6.5 Creedmoor to a mile without a while lot of effort.
DugnutttBobson@reddit
Thanks! Not my world but I love helping a friend out with guns. I'll forward the advice
LafayetteShooters@reddit (OP)
It’s really going to be dependent on caliber/ammunition. If you are looking for something flat shooting that you can reach out with and also have extremely obtainable ammunition, 6.5cdmr and 308 are you go to. Just for an example, 308 24” using Hornady 168gr match ammunition will have almost 4ft of drop at 500yds. 6.5cdmr 24” using Hornady 140gr match will have about 44” of drop at 500yds.
richiecotite@reddit
They’re rebranded howa 1500’s, made in the same factory
ginge111@reddit
Been hunting with a Weatherby Vanguard in 30.06 since I was a kid. Great rifle. I had the barrel cut down two inches and threaded so I could suppress it. It still shoots great and takes a deer / multiple pigs every year.
onlybanana@reddit
Anyone have experience on how these compare to Tikka/Bergara?
LafayetteShooters@reddit (OP)
You will not find a smoother bolt for the price point like a tikka. Both bergara and tikka offer a sub moa guarantee out of the box as well. I would put the vanguard in more of howa 1500 category like the user above mentioned. It’s an affordable nothing fancy “do it all” kind of rifle that functions as intended.
daffydubs@reddit
Weatherby also offers sub MOA for two years
clicktoseemyfetishes@reddit
I had a heavy varmint howa 6.5 that shot great for the price but was solidly 1.2-1.3 moa. I would not expect sub moa performance from a hunting profile vanguard
Sonic_Is_Real@reddit
I learned long range shooting on a weatherby. For the price, its very good. Fair trigger, good grouping on shitty ammo. Bolt is stiff when new. A broken in weatherby bolt feels like a brand new bergaras.
daffydubs@reddit
All their weatherbys are on sale right now. I bought the Mark V Backcountry Guide in 7mm BC this weekend for around $800 off. Looking forward to running it some this deer season
