zardfizzlebeef@reddit
For real? I would never have thought they can make that much. You mean the tech that makes the house calls?
kr1tterz@reddit
yeah, you can get to $35/hr by end of your first year i have a bunch of buddies i’ve got on that have done it. 4 years ago i was struggling to find anything above 20/hr thinking id never get a job where i make more than 60k/yr and this year ill make at least double. i highly suggest it to everyone. you can check my comment history for more details i’ve responded to a bunch of ppl before about it
Electricdragongaming@reddit
Dang... I should learn how to construct elevators...
ElGranQuesoRojo@reddit
It pays well but also has one of the highest death and serious injury rates for jobs in the US.
ReserveFormal3910@reddit
Also, one of the hardest to get aaccepted into.
Sbeast86@reddit
You gotta know somebody to sponsor you in. But anyone can go apply at the union building in Arlington
supavillan@reddit
Not true the only requirements to be an apprentice are $25 , and a highschool diploma or equivalent , and the ability to pass an aptitude test. My last mechanic immigrated to America in 2001 from the Middle East and became a mechanic, my first mechanic was an ex con addict who straighted his life out and joined the union my mechanic after that signed up at 18 first generation Mexican American and was accepted , my father immigrated to this country when he was 5 and joined the union later in his life and when I signed up no one asked me who my sponsor was or who my daddy is
bananabob23@reddit
Na he hit that man right on the head. I applied with a group of friends and we all had near perfect scores on the test and nobody got accepted. Everybody we knew who’s family worked in the field just happened to get in whether they were stupid as hell or not, some of those kids can’t figure out fractions on a tape measure.
It’s all good though, we became computer nerds.
supavillan@reddit
Did you get ranked ?
bananabob23@reddit
Yes. It’s been years since I applied but the process was something like sign up for the recruitment event (I don’t think you can just walk in and apply) take a test whenever the testing ever is and if you pass (I’m not sure what the score criteria is) you are contacted then get interviewed and placed in a pool sort of system where they hire in order of highest to lowest scores (boys club) within that pool of passing applicants and if you aren’t selected in the two years or so between hiring events you repeat the process at the next event.
supavillan@reddit
Boys club is just a cope I've heard it from a bunch of people who didn't get in , I met dudes from the opposite side of the country just applying , when I got in in as with two guys who were at the top of their respective fields who left to be at the bottom of the elevator trade met a guy who's wife was 3 months pregnant who he left in California to join our union for the benefits , maybe y'all didn't want it enough , cuz if immigrants , addicts , ex cons , 1st generation Americans ppl who travel 1200 miles just for an interview and aptitude test can do it any one can do it
bananabob23@reddit
Why would they fly from the other side of the country when NEIEP / IUEC hosts plenty of events nationwide? It may have been that way in 1970 but good luck getting into the club off Baird Farm Rd without daddy knowing somebody.
Although if ex cons felons and uneducated drug addicts are the ones that get in maybe I dodged a bullet, thanks for the heads up.
supavillan@reddit
Cope harder
Sbeast86@reddit
I'm just saying, it helps to have friends
bananabob23@reddit
Yeah connections won’t ever hurt anybody. It’s pretty eye opening at a young age right out of school.
CommanderGoat@reddit
My kid came home a few years ago and told us a boy in his class was gone for the week because his dad died. Found out later the dad was electrocuted repairing an elevator. The boy ended up having behavioral problems and they soon left. Sucks man.
Electricdragongaming@reddit
I mean... Yeah, you're obviously doing some pretty heavy manual labor while extremely high up (height wise). If you fall, shit ain't gonna be pretty. Also, claustrophobia.
JoshS1@reddit
Pays well but the job really has its ups and downs
Cassius_Rex@reddit
Oh man, that means a journeyman elevator guy can afford a TWO bedroom apartment in Dallas! So much space for activities!
😂
BurtWonderstone@reddit
Really expected an elevators pay to be more up and down.
Icuras1701@reddit
Sometimes the pay gets stuck between tiers if the tech sucks at his job.
Pumpnethyl@reddit
Noice!
OkBody9843@reddit
Their companies charge clients $650+/hr on weekends, you’d think it would at least be 10% of that.
DMTryp@reddit
GTFO
bananabob23@reddit
Pipe fitters unions, UAW for bell and IAMAW? For Lockheed pay very well too.
Only downside to a union is old hired make shitloads more than the younger generation with higher productivity.
DogInside5753@reddit
Good information! There is good work out there. So many electrical people at construction sites.
dc5antonio@reddit
LOCAL 20 MENTIONEDDDDDDDD
SleeplessInPlano@reddit
So how many of these trade jobs down here are non-union?
CanNo3497@reddit
found this - https://bandana.com/c-Dallas-Union-Apprenticeships.html
9Line-RH@reddit
Local 100 pipefitter/ welder here. Tons of work in dallss! And tons of data center jobs out here as well. Ive been working in abilene (traveling) for the last year as a 5th year apprentice. Been on 7/12s, average about $5k/ week. Lots of hospital work and TI kicking back off local as well.
T_ReV@reddit
5k a week means a lot of overtime right? So these Union pay rates still apply?
9Line-RH@reddit
Yes I mentioned im working 7/12s. 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. The jobsite is paying above scale, so im making a few $ more an hour then what you see in the description. Those numbers are the minimum the contractor has to pay you. Your wages can always be negotiated higher.
arlenroy@reddit
I had wanted to get into a pipe fitter union, ended up in the International Association of Machinists, local 788 I believe. Don't travel, which I wanted at first, but now I'm happy I don't. I too have been on 7/12's, but on our 7th day its double time, so that's nice. I didn't have to apprentice because of my aptitude test score, so I'm rolling into year 5 as a senior machine mechanic. Been averaging about $8k to $9k a week, depending on if I end up coming in early or having to stay late. A ton of hours, but my daughters car is paid off, her student loans paid off, my truck is paid off. Crank out a half dozen years working a ton of hours and you'll almost be set for life, well not set but pretty comfortable.
Lurcher99@reddit
Save some for when your body gives out.
Sibbour@reddit
Linemen journeymen make almost as much as inside wiremen journeymen? Really?
mrossm@reddit
It's the hourly. They typically put in a lot more hours at odd times so the yearly take home will be more
CensoredUser@reddit
The world really needs more plumbers...
Status-Injury5747@reddit
I don’t think this falls under any of these categories, but we sure did pay our Hobart technician to come out and never fucking fix any of the appliances.
poop_pebbles@reddit
Shit. I gotta see if they got one for maintenance directors. Worked 5 years as an iron worker/sheet metal guy, and last 20 years in building maintenance.
Current_Employer_308@reddit
How difficult are these unions to get in?
sinovesting@reddit
I work for a large power transmission/distribution company in the DFW area and I can tell you that our linemen make a lot more than $40/m.
JoshS1@reddit
Concrete Union is just whatever work pays is in-state prisons?
