Has anyone ever owned both a Miata and Mustang? Help me pick between the two!

I'm currently saving up for a "fun" car. Realistically I will be able to "responsibly" afford it in about a year. I grew up outside of America and have never gotten to test-drive Miatas or Mustangs, but from what I've read about them and my general impressions of them, my pick would be between those two. (Obviously I will test drive before purchasing.)
My understanding based on reading - the Miata is one of the best driving experiences ever engineered. Mustang has more power and a "masculine" feel, while being a more practical vehicle. Both cars are reliable and affordable as far as sporty cars go.
Context so people can get an impression of what I like
I currently own a CX5 and a Toyota Avalon, and I love both cars for different reasons, which is making it harder for me to decide between the Miata and Mustang. I also own a Ram truck (live in a pretty rural area now, hence why I'm able to own so many vehicles) which takes care of all of my serious hauling and towing needs. Unfortunately, I can't sell either of my cars because I let me SO drive whichever one I'm not driving.
The Reddit Mazda Glazers are right - Mazda really does have fantastic driving dynamics and nice interiors - my CX5 drives like a nimble Sedan and you can really "feel" the road. On the other hand, I do love my Avalon's powerful V6 engine, interior comfort and it has fantastic cargo space for a Sedan. I like the fact that it's quieter over bumps than the CX5 (a result of Mazda's tightly geared suspension systems).
Cars I've owned and my impressions:
Lexus CT200h hatchback - good car with super luscious interior but a pretty muted driving experience. Probably wouldn't buy again.
Honda Civic Si and VW Golf GTI - honestly these were both great and fun-to-drive cars and I never had any reliability issues with either.
Kia Optima - was ok until about 100k miles then had all sorts of problems, overall pretty bad, but it was a pretty old model.
Toyota Echo - my first car my parents got for me, small, nimble and reliable, will always hold a special place in my car but not something I'd get today.
Other factors influencing my decision:
I don't really want a soft-top convertible but the hard-top Miata's seem significantly pricier. But for that reason I'd probably steer clear of the Mustang convertibles too.
I'm open to both manuals and automatics. I really prefer manual gear shifts on motorcycles and side-by-sides, and when I drive my relative's stick-shift cars I like them, but I'm not as experienced or as skillful driving stick shift cars as they are and could see it being a problem on difficult roads and high-traffic areas on road trips. If I owned a stick shift I'm sure my skills would improve, so also open to suggestions there. For enthusiasts: Does the "fun" factor make owning a stick shift worth it?
I really prefer to buy used with cash and I hate making car payments, just a me-thing. So whichever car has a more customer-friendly used market as a plus. Based on my impressions, that seems to favor the Mustang.
I'm not the most handy guy and dislike doing lots of maintenance, so reliability is very important to me. I also don't really enjoy putting time and money into modding. Because of that reason I'd like a car that has good stock speakers and components, but I'm fine with buying used cars with mods as long as they're good.
I'm not a huge speed demon and don't care too much about top-end performance. Power and speed are nice to have, but I don't need turbochargers at the expense of reliability and simplicity and in the Mustang's case, V6 would be plenty for me, especially if it saves me money. As long as the car is generally fun to drive and has a "cool aura", and importantly, a nice-sounding engine with a somewhat quiet cabin, that's fine with me.
I value the superior practicality of the Mustang, but also I think that cargo space is pretty overrated. I drive to and from work with basically zero cargo and no other passengers most days, and have other vehicles with cargo space, so in that sense I think the Miata would be fine?
I love feeling the wind in my face, but nearly half the year is not convertible friendly and I also enjoy driving with the windows up, and listening to audiobooks, podcasts and music on long drives. For this, the Avalon is better than my CX5 with its quieter cabin and superior speaker system, and I could see that being a problem with the Miata. I also have side-by-sides and motorcycles for the full wind experience.
Although Miata and Mustang are at the top of my list, nothing is set in stone so if based on my preferences someone can suggest something better geared towards my indecisive wants and needs (Chargers/Challengers, Camaros, European convertibles etc.) I'm all ears!
NYCPatsFan71@reddit
The Miata is much more reliable and your insurance will be much much less.
Hash-82@reddit
>> Miata is one of the best driving experiences ever engineered
I've had two Miatas, one set up for autocross.
I though they were horrible.
They car I had that was (hands down) the most fun to drive was the S2000 that replaced the Miatas.
Creative_Antelope_69@reddit
If you’ve never driven a Miata you need to decide if you are ok with how small it is. My wife had one, we both did not like how unsubstantial it felt next to normal cars better yet lifted trucks. Those things would literally ramp over you instead of rear ending you.
lumpiawrappers@reddit
the exact reasons that scare you are the same reasons that excite me when I drive my NA especially in Texas lol.
uselessartist@reddit
It was too much excitement for me (once I had a newborn)!
dlc0027@reddit
I’ve got a manual Miata and previously had a 6 speed Mustang GT. I’m partial to the Miata for how much fun it is each and every drive, but the Mustang was also lots of fun. I think you’re fine with a Miata or a V6 or V8 Mustang-just go for a manual transmission.
Q_res@reddit
So I actually just switched from a '19 Miata RF with the GT-S package (a Grand Touring with an LSD, Bilstein shocks and a strut tower brace from the factory) to a brand new '25 Mustang GT Premium. I've also previously owned a '15 Mustang GT Premium and an '07 Civic Si. All manuals. I loved all of them for different reasons. Miata vs Mustang, I switched because of comfort, I'm a bigger guy (6'3" 245lbs) and it got to be too much squeezing myself into the Miata. That said it wasn't uncomfortable to be in, just to get in and out of. The Miata is more raw fun, ironically because it has less power. It's the slow car fast thing, you can push it harder without being outright stupid. If you know how to drive manuals, I'd suggest going that route with either car, they both have light and easy clutches. The shifter in the Miata is maybe the nicest one I've ever used, only the Si really compares. With the V8 Mustang, if you're worried about constant shifting in heavy traffic, especially stop-and-go they make adequate torque that you can just ignore 1st gear and start off in 2nd, maybe even 3rd.
No_Tomato_2106@reddit
Look man, if you're going for a fun car and a mustang is an option, always get the V8. Getting the 4cyl/V6 is like paying for a high class escort, going to dinner, and then walking her home and leaving at the end of the night - you're paying, might as well play.
Normally I'm not a mustang advocate, but from what you've driven before, a miata would be more familiar to you - so go crazy and get a V8 RWD iconic muscle car. It'll be much easier to find, and even if you go with an older one, the V8s are pretty damn reliable and fun. Even if the modern V6 makes more power than the older V8s, the 8 cylinders are part of the experience.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the advice. I will keep that in mind, hopefully test drive both V8 and V6 and see if I really appreciate the difference.
demonduster72@reddit
Notice how you got downvoted? These dudes are obsessive purists who believe anything other than a v8 in the mustang is an abomination. They will try to persuade you that you can’t have fun in the ecoboost or the cyclone, but that’s simply not true. From first hand experience, the ecoboost is an economical way to have the same amount of fun. There’s never been a day that I’ve driven it and felt like I needed the GT or higher to truly enjoy myself. I have the convertible, so it adds to the overall experience, but it rips all the same. This isn’t to say there isn’t room for improvement, but relatively inexpensive FBO mods can liven it up a little more if you feel that it’s necessary.
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
I don't think you're representing the down voters accurately.
I down voted the comment, but I'll defend my 3.5 EcoBoost F-150 all day long since it has a hundred foot pounds of torque more than the 5.0 counterpart, but there are dudes that'll say I don't have a real truck because it's not a V8. The thing is, guys that actually use their truck for truck stuff need torque and a truck is - at the end of the day - a tool for towing an hauling. A V8 isn't required and doesn't even matter.
A muscle car is different. The rumble of a V8 is such a huge part of the aura. And the noise when you stomp on it can be symphonic. I believe you that you're getting much of the driving experience in your EcoBoost Mustang the guy in the GT is getting, but you're too quick to hand wave away the sound, vibration, presence and sense of occasion that comes with the 5.0. It's great you like your car and you should, but not everyone shits on the EcoBoost because they're knuckle draggers...some of us genuinely believe not getting the GT is accepting a compromised experience.
OP: get the GT all the way.
demonduster72@reddit
I mean your comment exhibited exactly what I was referring to. You downvoted based upon exactly what I mentioned. I don’t see how it’s not an accurate representation. The point that I’m making isn’t that the V8 trims aren’t better for power and exhaust notes, but rather they are not the only way to experience the car, and you can still have fun without them. If that’s a compromise to you, that’s okay. Not being able to let the top down when cruising on Route 66 from the Grand Canyon to Kingman, AZ would’ve been a compromise for me.
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
Of course that's a compromise. Accepting worse power and worse exhaust notes is a compromise. Convertibles are available in GTs, so that's a nonsense point. You can always just go one year older to get the GT in convertible versus one year newer with the EcoBoost for the same price.
It's not like it's subjective that the GT is superior to the EB; it's just a fact. Glad you're happy with yours, but don't pretend it's just a different way of enjoying the same car; the EB is a worse car by every measure except price on a year-to-year comparo.
demonduster72@reddit
Cool. I want a 2026 GT Premium convertible with 401A, GT performance package, Torsen limited slip, and active valve exhaust. This is already a $70k sticker. Since there aren’t many of these on the road, especially with these options, dealers are gonna mark this shit up into orbit. You got this for me? You got $75-80k to drop on a daily driver? Because I sure as shit don’t, boss. The budget was up to a base GT and I went with the convertible EB because it’s what I wanted. Why that bothers you so much, I’m not sure, but unless you’re gonna hand me a fat wad of cash to buy the car you think is superior, you need to get a fucking grip and move on.
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
I'm not bothered in the least. I'm informing you that the EB is a compromise versus the GT. There's no emotion in this; just stating basic facts. I would buy a slightly used 2025 GT for the price of a brand new EB. You chose a different route, which is fine. My only point has been the EB is worse than the GT because it is. In every single way.
You sure you understand the definition of compromise? You seem to take issue with that and assume it's an emotionally charged word; however, you compromised on performance in your car in favour of price. I would have chosen to buy a slightly older GT for the exact same price as the EB, so my compromise would have been opting for used to stay within budget in order to get the better car.
You seem very sensitive about your decision to buy an EB lol. Don't worry, dude. Enjoy your car 😉.
demonduster72@reddit
That’s all you had to do. Obsessing over someone’s personal choice is weird af. I did what suits me. You did what suits you. Great. Now move on.
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
Nobody is obsessing over your car, guy. We're having a car discussion. If you don't want to talk about cars and the pros and cons of various models/trims in a discussion about this particular car and the choices between two trims maybe this isn't the subreddit for you?
demonduster72@reddit
OP specifically stated “does not care about top end power and is not looking for anything more than a v6”
JizzyMcKnobGobbler@reddit
Correct, but you aren't in some private message interaction with the OP. You posted publicly on a discussion forum. You said this: "These dudes are obsessive purists who believe anything other than a v8 in the mustang is an abomination. They will try to persuade you that you can’t have fun in the ecoboost or the cyclone, but that’s simply not true" and I responded to you. That's how conversations work, particularly on forums like Reddit. People converse and the topics kind of meander while staying generally in the guardrails of the original post and the subreddit. That's all we're doing here.
I think you need to reflect on how incredibly sensitive you are when people compare GTs to the rental specs. Relax ma man. It's just a car. I don't even live in the same country as you lol. Just mooove on. haha
demonduster72@reddit
So basically you’re admitting that you got butthurt because I said you don’t need the V8 to have fun in the Mustang? Copy that.
ZephyrStudios686@reddit
a v6/ecoboost mustang is a perfectly fine car if you want a mustang but cant afford the V8 costs. But for a 4th vehicle that's dedicated to enjoyment? You should spec it to perfection. The V8 really is a must, you're not getting the best part of the car without it.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
The fact that it's my fourth vehicle is exactly why I don't want to go overboard with costs lol. But I am open to the V8 depending on the deals that are out there. Can you tell me why you think the V8 is so essential beyond raw power?
Opening-Ad8300@reddit
Sound, that’s all.
Brother, I totally recommend a V6 if you’re just looking for a fun enough cool looking car. You obviously don’t really care about raw power numbers, so don’t sweat it.
Ecoboost won’t sound as good as a V6 because it’s an I4, but you do get the turbo noises, and could always use an aftermarket BOV if you want more of that.
Opening-Ad8300@reddit
It’s not a must. He already has a V8 truck for that kind’ve power if he’s looking for it. If he just wants a cool looking car that’s cheap, a V6 or Ecoboost will do him completely fine.
Go back to your YouTube shorts of annoying car guys rant about dumb shit like how anything less than 450HP is not worth it.
demonduster72@reddit
Budget was definitely the biggest factor for me, but not the only. I could’ve gotten a base GT, but ultimately I decided to spend a little more on a EB premium convertible for obvious reasons
yodas_sidekick@reddit
Don’t get a v6 mustang.
Empty-Village-4445@reddit
Eh, the sound/noise of a IC engine does very little for me. I’d rather have less weight on the front axle. YMMV.
No_Tomato_2106@reddit
Be gone EV nerd!
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
I do love the sound and feeling of my Ram's V8, I will give you that.
JNR481@reddit
The Miata is fun af though. The mustang is great. Gas is expensive. Do the math
whiskey_piker@reddit
It should be obvious by the low number of people that switched FROM a Miata TO a Mustang.
Hutwe@reddit
Take both for a test drive and go with the one you like the best. Mustangs can be awesome, and so can Miatas. There’s a reason both are iconic and have a significant following.
Agent-Kid@reddit
I own a 1966 Mustang and a 1990 Miata.
Mustang is a great hot-rod fun car to drive around town and occasionally annoy the neighbors with. Straight line speed and acceleration is fun.
Miata is like surfing on asphalt, and for a first "fun car" would be what I recommend.
I guess the follow up question is what this car would be used for? Track? AutoX? Summer/Spirited driving? Do you primarily live in the country or city and what is your normal commute like if relevant?
speedystein@reddit
I've not owned a Miata, but I've driven a bunch of them. I've owned a Mustang, and driven a bunch of them too.
You can't really go wrong with either car, TBH. Just depends on what you are looking for. Plenty of people buy both cars to just cruise back roads, and plenty of people race both cars, both drag and road course. I'd probably avoid anything Stellantis (Dodge, Alfa, Fiat, and others...) because they are junk, and I'd avoid Chevy because meh.
I've always liked how comfortable a stock Mustang is, especially if looking at base model/GT level cars. Comfortable ride, plush seats, not super low, and generally easy to live with. Mustangs make great weekend cars for this reason, plus they have a reasonably large trunk, which makes for a great road trip car. In modern cars, the base is the Ecoboost 4 cyl, which is an excellent engine that makes a lot of power low in the rev range - it is faster than most people credit it to be.
Miatas are definitely more "sport" oriented. Stiffer suspension, firmer seats for more support while aggressively cornering, more upright driving position. Not uncomfortable, but probably not a place I'd want to spend more than about 2-3 hours. That said, super fun to drive, carves corners like no other car out there, and they love to live near the redline.
I'm gonna be that guy and say it - BMW is always an option too. Used BMWs can be had for cheap, but if you don't know how to maintain/repair yourself, they can be very expensive. But, if doing it yourself, parts/tools aren't really much more than other brands, until you start looking at M cars. 2/3/4 Series cars are a good mix of powerful and nimble - they accelerate well and go around corners almost as deftly as the Miata. The more "mundane" BMWs are pretty reliable, and can be had easily with a manual transmission. B58 is the hot engine in smaller BMWs right now, but N55, B48, and a few others can be awesome too - just depends on how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go. I have an older F30 and love it. It's value is low enough now that I'm just gonna keep driving it until it dies, but it's given me almost 10 years of mostly trouble free miles.
My next car is gonna depend on what's available in my budget, of course, but I'm leaning towards either a 4 Series or a Mustang. 2 doors, manual transmission, RWD.
speedystein@reddit
Also, just as a side note, don't buy a used car with mods. Find a bone stock car - mods are a clear indication someone beat the crap out of it.
No_Tomato_2106@reddit
I've always hated that take. A cheaply modded car should be avoided - one that has quality and money put in it should be considered.
speedystein@reddit
Eh, everyone has different risk tolerances. Plus, I'm not gonna pay a premium for someone else's mods. I'd rather make the mods I wanna make, and know definitively that I put good parts in.
lumpiawrappers@reddit
Eh, if your plan is to build out a car and the parts are high quality and installed properly, save yourself the hassle and buy a modded car. Seen many friends who’ve done that, most recently my friend with a DC5 Type S.
speedystein@reddit
I mean, if you want to accept the liability from the previous owner, that's on you.
Modded cars tend to be driven by irresponsible people and attract the wrong kind of attention. Ever notice that you don't see many modded cars with more than about 150k miles on them? Because they tend to blow up, get crashed, or get impounded.
Like I said in my initial post - its all about risk tolerance. I'd rather buy a car from someone who maintained it well and drove it responsibly.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Thanks I am always unsure when I see mods I know they either beat the crap out of them or they're really good at maintaining them (when they list out all the mods neatly and seem to know their stuff).
In response to BMW, I recently rented an X1 while traveling which was my first taste of BMW - definitely a great driving experienced and this was with a Diesel-powered SUV. Surprised to hear that parts/tools aren't much more expensive even in America. I guess I could learn to become a "car guy" but I'm not sure how long that would take.
Temporary-Chest-3111@reddit
A BMW Z4 can be a decent option in your situation TBH. Reasonably nimble and can be had with more power than a Miata; the older E85/E86s are all naturally aspirated and straight sixes offer smooth power delivery. If you’re not a soft top guy there are coupes for the first gen and the later gen E89 comes with hardtops.
speedystein@reddit
FCP Euro and ECS Tuning both have OEM spec parts for most modern BMW and other European cars. RockAuto also has some stuff too, but quality is hit or miss. I order oil change stuff from Amazon - usually costs me ~$50 every 5k miles, for LiquiMoly oil and Mann (OEM) filter.
Nothing drives quite like a BMW, but they can break your heart and your wallet - just something to keep in mind. As with any car, do your research before buying.
R_Soul_@reddit
I disagree about the handling. Miatas have soft suspension and lots of body roll, unlike the Mustang GT.
speedystein@reddit
It's been a while, but all the GT and base Mustangs I've been in were pretty comfortable. I will also admit I haven't been in ND Miata - only NC and older. They are definitely different cars though, so maybe it's the fit/seating position/etc that felt that way to me.
Necessary-Carrot2839@reddit
I’ve got a 2012 Mustang GT so my opinion is based on that generation.
My car is 412 hp so it’s a powerful car and not for the faint of heart. You can easily get into trouble especially since it’s RWD. And RWD is different handing in snow than a FWD. The V6 has less hp but it’s still a powerful car.
It has a good size trunk by the backseat is useless for full sized humans.
The latest gen has IRS but the older ones have a sold rear axle which means bumpy roads are harsh. Also the suspension is tuned pretty harsh as well.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Surprised to hear that the suspension is tuned harsh. So your Mustang has solid rear axle? Did you managed to get used to it?
UncleSlayton77@reddit
I've never found any regular stock Mustang's suspension harsh. Is it a Lincoln? No. It's sporty so it can handle better.
speedystein@reddit
Agreed. Mustangs are pretty comfortable compared to a lot of other cars, especially when looking at performance/sporty cars.
Necessary-Carrot2839@reddit
Yes that may be so BUT it is harsh compared to regular cars. I’m getting older and it’s not as fun anymore either
speedystein@reddit
What size wheels/tires are you on, and has the suspension been modified?
My Mustang actually had a more comfortable ride than most of the other cars I've owned. Jetta, Mazda 6, BMW 3 Series, among others. But, that car had bone stock suspension, with fresh shocks/struts, and 16" wheels with meaty tires.
Necessary-Carrot2839@reddit
18” tires and no mods to the suspension.
speedystein@reddit
Yeah, roads are probably part of it. 18" wheels aren't helping either, not a lot of sidewall there. Combine those two and I can see how that could make for a rough ride. Does your car have the Handling pack or track pack? Those both include stiffer springs as well.
Necessary-Carrot2839@reddit
No to the handling pack or track pack. Maybe the wife and I are just getting soft in our old age! 😁
It’s still a very very fun car though. It’s a great feeling smoking some dude who’s tailgating me or thinking he can go faster.
speedystein@reddit
Haha, yeah, that happens too! At least you still enjoy it - that's really what it's all about!
Necessary-Carrot2839@reddit
Yep. I am thinking of selling it out though for an Audi. I feel like I’m entering luxury era 😁
UncleSlayton77@reddit
Just a Teraflex leveling lift (\~2.25" front, 1" rear), 1.25" body lift, and 285/75R17 Toyo AT3s (\~33.5"). So no stiff spring lifts. The Teraflex coils feel about like stock.
speedystein@reddit
Haha, I was asking about their Mustang that rides poorly! But truck is cool too! I feel ya with the truck ride - I've been around a LOT of Ford diesels, for both work and play - they can be pretty stiff. Currently own a 2018 F150 and love it!
UncleSlayton77@reddit
Oh, that was the Jeep Wrangler I was talking about. Truck is basically stock. I've had 5 Mustangs: 1966, 1986 SVO, 1987 LX hatch 2.3, 1989 Notch 2.3, and a 1998 GT. None of them were rough. The SVO COULD be if I adjusted the shocks to it (SVOs came with Koni adjustable shocks).
speedystein@reddit
Ah, that makes more sense, was wondering why you needed a lift to fit 33s on a one ton, haha.
I've only owned 1 Mustang, a 1998 GT, but have driven many. There are definitely some things that I miss about the Mustang - really seriously considering an Ecoboost Mustang for my next commuter.
Koni shocks are awesome - I have Koni yellow adjustable shocks on my BMW. They can get very stiff if I dial them all the way, but I keep them around 25% or so - my preferred balance of responsive and comfortable. This car absolutely rips around corners!
UncleSlayton77@reddit
To me a having another Mustang WOULD be like having a Lincoln. I have a F-350 dually and the SO a Jeep Wrangler, LOL. We got new, hydraulic shocks (Skyjacker Black Max) and load range C tires and it's definitely helped. With gas-charged shocks and E-rated tires a washboard road would rattle your teeth out! My truck had a better ride.
Necessary-Carrot2839@reddit
Yeh I am but my wife isn’t
jrileyy229@reddit
The thing with Miatas is that you can go all the way back to 1990 and get the same experience more or less... So you have a whole lot of cars to look at.
You do not want a 1990 mustang.
No_Tomato_2106@reddit
Considering how popular Fox bodies are, id have to disagree with you.
jrileyy229@reddit
That's mostly nostalgia though.
No_Tomato_2106@reddit
No, they're pretty great platforms for modding.
jrileyy229@reddit
Don't dispute that... But also not relevant here. OP isn't going to go buy a 5.0 Fox and start modding it.
When speed and power don't matter, which is basically what OP said, I can't imagine anyone would recommend a 1990 mustang over Miata when it comes to driving pleasure
Opening-Ad8300@reddit
Totally agree.
This comment section doesn’t seem to understand that OP isn’t looking for a fucking 400HP beast that can be modded into an almost completely different vehicle.
I think a Miata or a newer V6 Mustang will do him fine, but probably a Miata.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
I do like the look of some of the old Miatas especially because they're more affordable but I worry about reliability and safety for some of those NAs? Baseless?
jrileyy229@reddit
Safety is a business decision you make for yourself. Any small old car lacking modern safety technology is going to be less safe.
Reliability is outstanding for what it is... When you're talking about 30 year old cars, there isn't anything from the 90s that is more reliable than a Miata. It's still 30 years old though, and rubber seals and gaskets and whatnot dont last forever.
LensRebel@reddit
The Mustang is basically a rolling V8 meltdown—big, noisy, and clearly not built with corners in mind. It doesn’t so much carve through turns as wrestle with them, and you just hang on and pretend that’s part of the charm.
Meanwhile, the Miata glides through bends like it actually understands what driving is supposed to feel like. No excess, no showing off—just clean, precise fun. It doesn’t rely on brute force because it doesn’t need to.
Mustang owners: “Yeah, but it’s got 480 horsepower.”
Miata owners: “Nice. I can actually use all of mine.”
Choosing the Mustang is basically saying, “I wanted something fun to drive, but I got sidetracked by noise and forgot what that meant.”
Lordofpineapples@reddit
I don’t think you’ve driven a Mustang in the last decade
Opening-Ad8300@reddit
You can tell he used AI for the description lmao, dude has zero clue what he’s talking about.
Opening-Ad8300@reddit
Get this ChatGPT garbage out of here, dawg.
Jmauld@reddit
This feels like you have driven a mustang since 2002?
LensRebel@reddit
It feels like you haven't driven a MX-5 since 2002 either ;)
Jmauld@reddit
I’ve owned both modern MX-5 and Mustang.
You’re describing shit from 1990.
R_Soul_@reddit
The 2015 and newer Mustangs moved to independent rear suspension and corner better and faster than a stock ND Miata.
LensRebel@reddit
You don't say ;)
R_Soul_@reddit
Did you edit your comment or am I crazy?
bigstinkygoblin@reddit
It really depends on what year mustang vs what year miata in order to start considering this
jaquatics@reddit
Easy, an LS swapped Miata!
Lordofpineapples@reddit
Miata’s are fun. But there’s too many giant lifted trucks on the road and people don’t see them. I was almost ran over several times when I had mine.
I’d go with the Mustang for power and practicality. The backseat is nice in a pinch and the new ones handle great. Get a manual. Get the V8.
The Miata will get better mpg and handle better on curvier roads. But I wouldn’t want to drive it around town with how terrible people are nowadays. The GT is much more fun in a straight line and sounds amazing revving up and rowing through gears from light to light.
railman04@reddit
Mustang
Schmurtzy@reddit
Miatas drive like go-carts, in all of the good ways. Comparatively, the Mustang will feel like an aircraft carrier.
Creative_Antelope_69@reddit
While the Mustang will feel and be bigger and heavier, the Miata does not feel like a go-cart, at least not the latest version. Miatas lean and have big weight shifts. Go-carts and more expensive cars like Porsches sit flat in the corners.
R_Soul_@reddit
Yes. My Mustang GT Performance/Luxury Pack cornered flat and shook violently with every bump. My Miata GT rolls in the corners and soaks up the bumps. The Mustang was much more comfortable to SIT in but the Miata is much more comfortable to DRIVE in.
Creative_Antelope_69@reddit
I’m not going to disagree with any of this.
I’m just saying if you want that go-cart feeling you’re going to want something like an older m2, Boxster, or Lotus. The Miata does not feel that way. A GTI won’t be as fun as a Miata, but it does feel closer to a go-cart.
CastorX@reddit
You need to put at least mid tier coilovers under the miata and a good alignment. Problem solved for not too much money. I did it and there is a night and day difference (and it improved the steering feel). However i would NOT recommend this approach if the road surface is really bad in your region.
InconsistentTherapy@reddit
Mustangs are really that stiff? I haven’t had a chance to test drive one yet, but an S550 Mustang GT had been on my short list for potential “grand tourers” to replace my Civic Si. I want better seats but similar chassis control.
R_Soul_@reddit
I owned a 2015 GT for almost 10 years. My previous car was a BMW 135i M. The ride on both sucked on washboard-surfaced roads and potholes. However, between the suspension and good tires, they put down power well snd were pretty planted in the corners.
PurpleSausage77@reddit
Yeah you have to upgrade the Miata. I’ve only had a 1st gen NA, but they flopped around in typical convertible fashion. They needed upgraded suspension and lots of bracing to feel go-karty. Maybe if coming from a boat/SUV/pick up truck and then driving the Miata it would feel like a gokart by comparison.
I prefer my fixed roof 86, no sunroof either.
Mustangs with IRS (so S550 and newer) feel gokarty as well but in scaled up fashion with an additional 800lbs (3300 vs ND Miata 2500) and that’s in barebones base Mustang form.
ScaryfatkidGT@reddit
My issue is Mustangs keep getting bigger and heavier… and the new ones are like $50-75 grand…
The only issue I have with the Miata is they are SMALL, like tiny… no glove box, trunk the size of a sterelite tub…
imachiknsamich@reddit
I had a transam before I had the miata
While I must say, I did enjoy the 300 plus horsepower V8. It was not daily driver material since it got between 16 and 25 MP. G. It wasn't really suitable to drive to and from work Every Day. Maybe on a road trip here and there, but not as a daily car.
The other issue is. I really only had fun with it. When I was driving at triple-digit speeds I find it almost mandatory to hit 100 every time I turn the key which is Frowned upon by the local law enforcement.
I ended up wrecking it, in a drunken rage and bought the miata a couple weeks later
Now I have the NB miata. I have driven it almost every day for months, even in the rain. And I must say, overall, it's the best of both worlds. It gets decent gas mileage even when I beat on her. She's a lot more fun in the corners. And I don't have to go a 100 just to have a good time i love that car so much.
I would pick the miata over the trans am any day, and this is coming from someone who had his dream car already. The miata consistently makes me happier on a daily basis. Then, the trans am ever did. It's safer and more fun to drive in more circumstances

How tall are you and are you of average weight for your height if you are 6 foot plus and anything much past just slightly over weight unless miatas have grown the answer between those 2 is the mustang. Cause the miata aint for folks that are tall and much larger than average.

Yeah your good but if you were a sasquatch sized American who is both tall and wide like me i could not gun to my head even ride in the passenger seat of the miata. Little on drove it the top of the wind shield woulda hit me at about the chin if i coulda sat in it.

It depends on what you want. If you want to accelerate off the line at a stop light, Mustang. Miata is a momentum car, in the twisties it is going to perform much better.
A Miata makes if fun to go to the grocery store. You have a pickup for Home Depot runs, get the MX-5.

Test drive both of them, then go drive a manual Porsche Boxster. I have a 2000 Boxster with 100K miles on it and she’s hugs turns way better than my Mustang ever did. She’s never skipped through a corner, no matter how hot I enter it. I ride motorcycles too and am all about the twisty turnies. Plus you get 2 trunks for storage, which is great for road trips.

Mustang, end of story. Half of the people in here have no idea what the fuck they're talking about nor have they driven either.
HeyWV132@reddit
My dad retired from Ford which provided us a great life, so I’ve been loyal most of my life. And I love Mustangs from the very first ones to the current generation.
Having said that, I had the opportunity to pick up a 2012 GT Miata with soft top a few years ago with only 18,000 miles. It had been modded in all the right performance areas. I can’t even begins to tell you what a joy it has been to own and drive. Anytime I contemplate getting rid of it Al I need to do is drive it. The sheer joy it brings is unmatched.
If you can’t tell, I absolutely recommend an older model convertible. It will astound you and bring you unrivaled joy and satisfaction!

MountainMan300@reddit
These comments are insane and clearly written with a heavy Miata bias.
I daily a 1998 Mustang, V8, 5 speed convertible. I’m biased in its favor, but I’m going to share an uncomfortable truth:
The SN95 platform is the best value on the “fun”used car market today. You can get a running and driving V8 manual SN95 for sub-5k if you look for any length of time. I bought mine for 3k in February 2025.
It doesn’t have the go-kart feel of a Miata. The Miata corners better. But Miata’s have kind of come full circle, and people know they’re desirable and either hold onto them or want (comparatively) big money for them. SN95’s aren’t super desirable outside of Cobra variants.
The Miata is an excellent car, debatably better than the Mustang. But the SN95 represent better value right now in this market.
Radiant-Triumph@reddit
I would generally recommend Mustang as I tend to favor rolling burnouts and maximum acceleration, but specifically a V8 with a manual. In your case the Miata sounds like a better choice, if you aren't replacing a more practical vehicle but instead adding a more enjoyable addition the Miata makes perfect sense for that role.
Jmauld@reddit

willmaineskier@reddit
Drive a Mustang GT and a Miata. They are wildly different. I did in 2008 and while the rush of getting on the interstate with more than 400 hp was fun, I liked the Miata more in just about any way. Would highly recommend the Miata. If all the roads are straight where you live then get the Mustang. I ended up getting a WRX STI instead because it fit my wife and our dog…

Interesting comparison, but don't limit yourself to people who've owned both, there are plenty of drivers who have driven both extensively without owning one or the other (or either, like me!).

I drove a Miata for 11 years and now drive a v6 Mustang, 11 years currently. My legs are giving out so getting in and out of a Miata is out of the question. The v6 Mustang is nice but to me not really a sports car. I’ve been looking at the Mustang with 5.0 coyote. I’d like to have one but right now the budget will not cooperate. I dream about my Miata wishing I was still driving it.

One_Evil_Monkey@reddit
Between the two... and it's not going to be your only vehicle...
I'd go for the Miata. Personally I can't stand convertibles so it'd be a hardtop with a manual for me. If I want the no top "wind in my hair" feeling, I have my motorcycles for that.
The Mustangs I've owned were a '65, '67, and an '86. The '65 and '67 were 200ci inline 6s, one with an automatic and one with a 3spd manual. The '86 was a street/strip with a 425hp 347ci and a 4spd manual. For a week I swapped my '97 Firebird 3800 V6 5spd with a friend for her '96 Mustang 3.8 V6 5spd. Between those two the Mustang was slightly more "practical" but I didn't like it enough over my Firebird to make the trade. The Pontiac was just a more fun car to drive and looked better.
My aunt had an NA Miata, convertible 5spd. Drove it quite a bit, never bothered putting the top down, but it was a blast to zip around with. Such a fun, nimble little car.
If you decide on the Mustang, you're not going to get anything relatively new that has the V6. 2017 was the last year. Reliability wise, the Duratec 37 was pretty reliable as it was non turbo. 305hp. But really, if you're going Mustang, just go for the V8. I know you said you're not great a gear changing and the auto is "okay" but just go for the manual transmission. Might as well.
But honestly, I'd still go for an NA or NB Miata manual with a hardtop. You can get a full carbon fiber top for $2k that weighs like 13lbs if you want.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
I didn't actually know you could get Carbon hardtop add-ons for Miatas. That's great to know. Very cool you owned all of those old cars!
One_Evil_Monkey@reddit
Sure can. https://www.carbonmiata.com/shop/hardtop-oem-replica-for-miata-na-nb-1109
Yeah, pretty cool I guess. I fully restored the '67 Mustang from just a body shell and boxes and boxes and boxes of NOS FoMoCo parts. That was 30yrs ago. That car was one of my two daily drivers (other was a 1980 Chevy LUV) starting my senior year of high school.
TerribleShape1740@reddit
I’ve had both. I’d say it depends what your local roads look like. If you have lots of twisty roads, Miata all day. If it’s pretty straight and flat the mustang will be more fun
ShatterProofDick@reddit
How tall are you. I absolutely don't fit in a miata. I daily a mustang convertible.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Not tall so I'd probably fit into a Miata fine. What's your experience like with the Mustang convertible?
ShatterProofDick@reddit
It fucks hard. I found a special order ecoboost that has the Focus RS engine and a bigger factory turbo. Also has 3 pedals. Not quite as nimble as my old miata or boxster but it would still post faster times in an auto x course based on my experience with all 3 of those.
And I don't wear it like a T-shirt because I'm 6 foot 4.
EventHorizonHotel@reddit
I have both a Miata and a Camaro. If you were only going to own one car, I’d say get a Mustang. It’s going to be more practical and comfortable while still being relatively fun to drive. It’s a good looking car as well.
That said, if I want straight up fun, I take the Miata. I’d get a convertible with a manual though. It’s an easy manual to drive, second nature really, you won’t even think about it. Top down, rowing through the gears is a lot of the appeal though. You’ll miss out on a lot with an auto hardtop imo. If you’re going to do that, just get the Mustang.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the advice. I do imagine shifting in the Miata would be easier than my Dad's Tacoma lol.
Mind if I ask why you chose to get a Camaro over a Mustang? (if that was even a consideration)
KingChuffy@reddit
Can't speak for him, but I went Camaro for the better performance specs, IMO better looks, and after test driving both the Canaro feels better. (2016 SS, pre ugly ass face-lift).
Bonus that the LT1 is easy as fuck to mod, and the TR6060 is LEAGUES better than the MT82, in feel and reliability.
BassWingerC-137@reddit
Best I’ve got… I dailied a 5.0 Miata in my 20’s.
gotcha640@reddit
Realistic budget and market/region?
We can recommend Mustangs, talking about the IRS ones with <80k miles, when your budget is for an SN95 with the bumper hanging off.
Either car has an enthusiast following. Shop the seller as much as the car - you want an engineer who changed the oil every 3k miles and followed a maintenance schedule and offers you their spreadsheet when you show up. They still hit corners at speed and spun the clutch a few times, but they already drove stick when they bought it.
At a certain budget ($8-12k?), I’d rather the cleanest 2005 than the rattiest 2019.
windmill09@reddit
Completely different cars. I don't subscribe to the "Miata is always the answer." mantra. IMO, the Miata is only good in tight canyons. The Mustang is good everywhere else and not as good in tight canyons. Road noise is much worse in the Miata, it's less practical with just 2 seats and little to no storage, and it doesn't have enough power for you to power slide the car if you like to be a hooligan every once in awhile. However, it will handle like its on rails after you add some anti-sway bars in the car. Stock, the Miata handles like a small boat. Extremely slow to settle between corners, however it's probably the best handling and lightest car you can reasonable buy after you do some basic suspension mods. A Mustang RIPS going onto the freeway and on long sweeping corners. It's one of the best engines to modify for more power.
I'd throw a wildcard in there. A Nissan 370z will split the difference between the two. It just needs some basic suspension mods from stock as well, such as anti-sway bars. Once those are done they handle dam close to a modified Miata in the canyons but with enough power to drift. They can grip or drift.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
370z looks interesting. I've always kind of disregarded Nissans because I don't like their cars or SUVs and have heard the horror stories about their CVTs but this looks really nice!
windmill09@reddit
Haha. Nissan Zs and GTRs have nothing to do with their normal cars. The normal cars are essentially Renaults. Nissan sports cars are incredibly reliable and don't have CVTs. They use normal autos or manuals. I had an auto 350z and Infiniti G37 IPL. The 350z had 245k miles when I sold it. The only repairs it needed was a serpentine belt and gallery gaskets. The G37 had 179k miles when I sold it and it only needed gallery gaskets.
I have a Lexus RCF now, but I'm considering getting a 370z since I missed my 350z so much when I sold it to move on to Porsches. I had a 987 Boxster and a 991 Carrera S. IMO, front engine RWD is way more fun.
PanzerKittenWildcard@reddit
You didnt really specify cost/years you are looking at and there's a lot of variability just among the same cars there year over year so cant truly answer this, but here's my own experience. I had a 1990 miata back in like 2013/14 ish that I had for about a year and currently own a 22 Mustang GT (premium, Manual, pp1 package) and they are both very fun in their own very different ways.
Youll hear the go kart description about miatas a lot. Theyre small, light, nimble to move around and just a lot of fun just from a driving engagement perspective. They are not fast, they arent exactly world class handling cars in stock form. Its just a fun time to drive it, and the plus is you can use all 90hp to the limit and not really get in trouble. Pretty simple to work on and lots of mods.
Whereas at least a newer mustang drives like a big GT car. More comfort and space, but doesnt have that nimble feeling even if the spec sheet has way more measured performance. Dont get me wrong though the S550's can definitely go around a turn but it wont feel like a go kart, itll feel like a big car even if its more than capable of doing so. However, a coyote will make you feel like youre driving a moon rocket when you punch it so you get a lot more of the smiles from that. However, all that power also means its way harder to control if you do something stupid. You generally wont have a problem as long as you dont turn off Traction control and drive reasonably for conditions (dont floor it mid corner, in the rain, etc). I would also add that youd lose a lot of the fun going with the V6 options or an ecoboost. They arent unreliable at all, Ford uses that 2.3L in a lot of cars but thats also why I say that it wouldnt be fun. We have a 20 explorer with the 2.3L and granted, its in an explorer, not a sports car. While its more than adequate power wise, nothing about it seems to me like its a fun engine to rev out or anything, so its not what id go out of my way for. so if you arent gonna get a V8 mustang since this is a fun car, id lean Miata. However, if youre leaning ecoboost mustang, go rent one from one of the big rental companies amd see how you like it.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the insights. I am planning to rent both from a rental company or Turo. My budget is probably going to be in the 10-15k range but I'm willing to go even cheaper if I find deals lol. Like I said I'm not picky about top-end performance, not interested in revving it, don't even mind minor cosmetic defects. And I don't mind high miles/rebuilt titles as long as it's a provenly reliable model/year of a car and has good maintenance history.

Honestly get the mazda.
You aren't a a muscle car guy. The only reason to get a charger, challenger or mustang is to light the tires once in a while. So V8 or pass.
You keep mentioning 4 seaters so you might also consider bmw 3 or 5.
The mustang is awesome. The miata is a hairstylists sports car. But I am a muscle car guy.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Thing is personality wise I think I am more of a muscle car guy. I just like Mazda and have heard such good things about the Miata driving experience. But if you asked most that know me they'd think of me as a muscle car guy.
I really like the look, sound and feel of the Mustang, but as I said I don't really care about top end performance and lighting the tires to such an aggressive degree. That's why I think the V6 would suffice.
Bulocoo@reddit
Then be careful what you pay. Selling it will be cheaper and harder.
You can buy a late 60s 6 cyl Mustang for $15k. Double it for V8 Mustangs.
No replacement for displacement.

If you’re set on the v6 version of the mustang, I’d opt for the Miata. If the v8 is on the table, that would be my pick of the two.
Yummydain@reddit
I’ve owned both! I had a 1992 Miata, as well as a 2014 mustang GT! I loved both cars and miss them dearly. If I were given the option to have either one of them again I would absolutely choose the mustang.
The Miata was a really fun car to drive down winding mountain passes with the top down in beautiful weather. It feels simple and easy and as though the car wants to work with you. It wasn’t very practical though. When I’d have a passenger there really wasn’t somewhere to put their purse other than the floorboard between their feet. Yall decide to go out to eat and have leftovers? Well… sorry passenger but you’re gonna have to hold onto the food the whole time because there’s nowhere else to put it (unless you have room in your trunk). Day-to-day it was a very fun car, but the times you do need a little extra space in your car gets very annoying.
The Mustang was incredible. It suffered from an issue the Miata had as well, where the cup holders were directly behind the shifter so if you had a drink or two in them you’d have to either shift with your finger tips or contort in an awkward way to shift lol. I had a roush axle back exhaust which sounded beautiful. Nothing beats the sound of opening up your V8. It was equally as fun on winding roads with the added benefit of a beautiful exhaust note bouncing off the nearby mountain walls. Much more difficult to handle though, you can very much feel the weight of the engine up front in every maneuver you do. The car feels like it does not want to do anything but go straight but once you learn how to handle the car it’s a great experience. Plenty of space inside for book bags, left overs, jackets, etc. while you and your passenger also have room to yourselves to relax. The best part of having the V8 was being able to pass people on the highway without any worry, because it’s much quicker than 90% of the cars you come across daily. Where I lived there were a lot of one lane roads, and when I needed to get around someone I could drop it into third gear and pass them in seconds. The Miata feels geriatric in comparison at highway speeds.
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the in depth analysis this is exactly what I was looking for. The exhaust note of the Mustang is definitely a huge appeal to me. I have no doubt the Miata is probably more fun to drive in a vaccuum but I am wondering if it'll really be more fun than driving my 4 wheeler, side by side or motorcycle? Meanwhile, the Mustang would give me something pretty new to experience.

Check out the Suburu BRZ / Toyota GR86. Arguably better handling than a miata, with more horse power, and IMO better looks. It doesn't come in a convertible, but otherwise is a great "driver's car".
young_frogger@reddit (OP)
Do you have thoughts on the WRX?
preparetosigh@reddit
I haven't driven a WRX. They look good and can come in manual, but they're sports sedans and not a coupe, like the miata or mustang you mention. If you're looking for a "sports car" the brz is a better fit. If you want a more pratical sporty sedan, the WRX is the better choice. But choosing a wrx means your should be comparing to things like an Elantra N, GR Corolla, Civic Si / Type-R, etc. Just a different style of car.

Nelgski@reddit
Mustangs corner pretty decent these days, but they still are more about the growl and straight acceleration.
Miata has always been about wind in your hair and cornering grins.
Cornering grins and reasonable speeds in between is less likely to generate tickets. And everyone needs to own a convertible at least once in their lives
DogblackMichigan@reddit
Mustang Mach E had a lower center of gravity. It also has way more torque so the acceleration is way faster. If you like noise then turn up the radio.
OlYeller01@reddit
A big part of this relates to your size. I’m 6’4” and fit decent to good in most Mustang generations (though I do have seat track extenders in my ‘03 Mach). I do NOT fit in older Miatas.
Another part relates to budget and how old you’re looking at going. If you DID want a convertible, you can often find low mileage older generation Mustang convertibles for good prices.
As for sound, Mustangs with the Shaker 1000 option don’t need a lot of modification. I’m not sure about Miatas. Older Mustangs with the “Mach 460” sound system will almost certainly require modifications.
And if you can afford it, definitely go for a V8 Mustang.
