What’s the deal with all these ai books on Amazon? Anyone feel it could be the death of their book side?

driving me mad. trying to get books I haven‘t read on Napoleon and France after the revolution and there’s so much dross.
you can tell them because they go for 99p the blurb is ai speak and has an ai cover.
actually going to use local bookshops more - Amazon needs to crack down on it really.

Someone I know had a scheme on there for activity books; not sure how it worked exactly but sounded like some AI produced, drop shipping scheme. They said they were making quite a bit for doing absolutely nothing. On a similar note, I actually received a ‘fake’ book from Amazon that I bought someone for a Christmas present last year. It was a published book from an actual author, but it had clearly been copied and printed unauthorised - the cover was wonky, the paper was see through and the blurb on the back was cut off. I requested a return and sent pictures, Amazon told me to keep it and refunded me no questions asked, so shows how common it must be. I recycled it and went into a proper book shop to buy it as didn’t feel right keeping it and the author not getting money. I never buy books from Amazon now and actually try and avoid them for most things.

Loads of finance bros peddling online the ability to make passive income by creating drop shipping accounts or creating your own book is partially to do with it

An unfortunate downside of AI is that talentless hacks can have AI regurgitate nonsensical slop and these losers somehow think they are an "author", and what's worse is that they can make money off work they didn't do using AI which steals assets from *real* authors.

Amazon's been killing its book side for a while. It used to be a really good deal for used books, but now with post and packaging included it's cheaper to go to a used book shop or even just buy it new.
It's a shame for people in areas where getting to their local bookshop/library might not be easy, but overall I think a little less Amazon and a little more actual bookshops is a good thing.
