7800x3d or 9800x3d?

Hi All,
I'm currently in the middle of gathering parts of a build. I've got a 5080 but am unsure which cpu to pair with it. I'm aiming for 1440p gaming but do want the option to have 4k in case I decide to upgrade my monitor.
Any advice welcome!

What kind of fps are you aiming for and what games do you play?

Around 144fps and I play all sorts.

Go with the 9800x3d. At most stores, it’s less than a 100$ difference. I got mine off a slick deal for 379.99 and I feel lucky.

9800 but the difference is minimal

5080 and 7800x3d works very well with 1440p Source: trust me bro (i have the same setup but wotj 64 gb ram)

I use 7800X3D + 4090 with 1440p UW monitor and besides competitive titles, I wouldn't see a difference in performance, if I upgraded to 9800X3D. If 9800X3D fits in your budget and you don't have to compromise on any other parts, then get 9800X3D. But if the price difference can get you, for example a better display, then I'd say 7800X3D.

Depends on price if the 7800x3d is way cheaper pick that if not 9800x3d,i personally have 5080 with 7800x3d and its really good majority or games are gpu bound anyway in 4k

Either will pair well with the 5080. The 9800X3D has a 5-10% performance advantage. That said no game can really max out the 7800X3D. So basically it is down to budget and price differences.

9800x3d
it runs cooler
better for emulation (esp ps4)

7800x3d and then upgrade it for whatever last gaming x3d on AM5 later

I only have the 9800x3d because it costed me 40USD to upgrade from 7800x3d and I actually play CPU botlenecked simulators. Otherwise the 7800x3d has better value.

Performance difference is around 10%, but only in a scenario where the graphics card isn't maxed out. If you're thinking about playing 4K then the CPU will barely matter. Entirely depends on the difference in price between the two.

what the price gaps?

I vote for 9800x3d

If you just want the fastest gaming CPU and you don't mind spending more, then the 9800x3d. If you want the best price/performance and still very powerful and more power efficient, then the 7800x3d. Also at 1440p and 4k they'll perform mostly the same.
