People here say how they pay like 100 dollars at dealer with their 5 liters truck. And me in europe with cheap kia rio 1.2 engine paying like 300 euro for oil change with filters. Are services in europe just scams ? Xd i need to do it for waranty xd.

šŗšø goes to Jiffy Lube where theyāre allocated 5 minutes labor, thereās a chance they destroy your car / strip the sump plug, and use any oil that may or may not be right. In šŗšø dealer service is expensive too.
I was quoted $800 in š¦šŗ for a dealer oil change. Dealer service is expensive everywhere. Book service is almost 2 hours including multipoint inspections. Itās going to cost to do properly.
engadge@reddit
What car you have that you were quoted $800 š
TheWhogg@reddit
That was on a 740i
Bulocoo@reddit
There are 2000 Jiffy Lube locations. They do 40 oil changes a day X 365 days a year. That's 30 million oil changes a year. And that's just jiffy lube.
Probably 100s of millions of oil changes a year. Once in a rare moon we hear a horror story.
There is a red light that comes on. That light means "STOP IMMEDIATELY!"
It's like one plane crash means flying is unsafe. No flying is the safest for of travel.
As long as there are humans there will be mistakes.
TheWhogg@reddit
Iām sure dealers and even owners make mistakes. What about the systemic issues like over tightening sump plugs, using generic oils that may well not meat specification?
Bulocoo@reddit
I'm a car guy. I used to do my own oil. I use take 5 now.
They bulk buy oil. I can choose Castrol or Mobile 1 at my local. I use their bulk synthetic. It definitely meets spec.
If they tighten the sump plug they have to loosen it so not an issue for me. If I do decide to do a change I know how to remove a tight sump plug.

It depends completely on WHAT KIND OF CAR youāre talking about.
Some cars have cabin air filters, so when you mention āoil and filtersā maybe you mean those things also, and some of them are expensive and hard to reach.
Some cars use expensive oil filters and expensive oil and lots of it.
Middle-Gas-6532@reddit
Yeah. For me here in Europe, a yearly or 10k km service means oil and oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and cabin filter. Fortunately I don't use a dealership or OEM parts, only AM
YeahIGotNuthin@reddit
You are replacing a fuel filter and an air filter and a cabin filter every 6,200 miles? Thatās absolutely insane.
SkiyeBlueFox@reddit
Wait til you hear abt my boss and his lawnmowers. 250hr manufacturer stated service intervals. Oil changes every 50hrs is what does happen.
To be fair he has the oldest lawnmowers in the best condition so clearly it works
Middle-Gas-6532@reddit
I have a diesel engine, they are finicky. It's recommended to change the fuel filter often, and for my car it's cheap.
288bpsmodem@reddit
How many cars nowadays have an easily replaceable fuel filter tho?
Middle-Gas-6532@reddit
I don't know. My car is 12 years old almost, and it's specific model came out in 2010.
jrileyy229@reddit
It's not a scam if you got the service promised at the agreed upon price. If you are just blindly agreeing to whatever number the dealership spits out without understanding what is involved, that's on youĀ
True_now@reddit (OP)
i know its just i am midle of europe people here make like 1000 ⬠month as retail worker.
So dealerships pay so so much less money for their employers etc. You would have thought they would be forced to lower price because competition would rise.
jrileyy229@reddit
So go to a small independent shop that is probably going to be half the price... It's not rocket science here
Infinite-Past7640@reddit
Is your Kia diesel? Diesel service isnāt cheap in North America either.
CertainCertainties@reddit
Doing an oil change is part of maintaining an ICE car. With all the electronics and software, it's an increasingly small part compared to the 1980s.
A cheap oil change doesn't mean that your car is being properly maintained. A professional you trust will do the other 20 things that keep it running far past the warranty period. And that costs money.
Many prefer to just do oil changes then blame the manufacturer when they kill their car.

From an American perspective, it seems that European regulators are very keen on limiting engine displacement on spec. The accepted maximum seems to be about half a liter per cylinder bank, engines that exceed this size or subject to significant penalty.
And they do this while leaving open a massive loophole for just about everyone to get around the displacement threshold via forced induction.

Oil changes in the US don't really make money, they get you into the dealer to look at other cars and potentially upsell you on more profitable services(Wipers, air filters, etc)

sendme_your_cats@reddit
I mean it depends on the type of oil, the capacity, and where we get our oil changed.
I haven't taken mine to get changed in years since I do it myself but my bmw dealership sends me emails advertising 30 dollar oil changes + filter.
I'd figure the regular is roughly 100?
Fuck that man, go DIY and get a fumoto valve for hassle free oil changes.
Joe_B_Likes_Tacos@reddit
In this case this BMW dealer is just offering a deal to get the customer into the shop so that they can find other things to fix on the vehicle at much higher rates.
For the OP, the Cadillac dealers around me charges $300 per hour for labor in affluent areas. The lower tier Japanese brands near me charge significantly less. My friend with a Porsche 911 GT3 pays prices that I can't comprehend.
I just do my own oil changes. It's cheaper, quicker it better quality work when I do it myself.
4n4rk40t1c0@reddit
My understanding is that in the US, oil changes are done more frequently due to higher mileage, so the costs are more āspread outā over time. Also, what people usually refer to there is often just an oil and oil filter change (and nothing else). In Europe, an oil change is typically part of the scheduled annual service (every 1ā2 years), so the price also includes additional labor, inspections, and other parts beyond just oil and filter. Thatās why it can look much more expensive at first glance.
Ponklemoose@reddit
In the US your oil change also includes inspection, itās an opportunity to sell you on the additional service and reduce the chance you break down some.
But yes something like a 30k mile service would cost extra everywhere.
sharkdingo@reddit
I dunno, i spend like $50/month doing my oil changes. But i drive 50k miles a year minimum.
Marlowe_Eldridge@reddit
We pay 200 less for oil changes, you have universal healthcare.
Temporary-Chest-3111@reddit
You own a Kia in Europe, so some parts have to be imported from South Korea with the added cost passed to you regardless of whether itās a cheap car or not. And warranty services should be free regardless of where you areā¦
