best way to book hostels in Europe? currently planning a summer rail trip!

I am doing the London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin circuit for the first time (!!!) this summer and I know things are going to get booked up fast. I am trying to figure out the most reliable way to secure my places without the usual hidden fees BS
Whats the best way to book for someone on a budget? Should I book directly per hostel or is there a platform that gives better prices and great places as well?

use hostelworld to find places then book direct, this is the way I've been doing it and it seems to be the safest in terms of if anything goes wrong!

I check both hostelworld and booking. In that order. If you suspect there are plenty of spaces, you can just walk in and ask for a discount (booking fees for online platforms are high), often works. Occasionally the price in person is higher, especially with chains. Then just order on booking on the spot.

Booking.com is the way. Cheap and reliable.
Hostelworld likes to add fees on top, and the price breakdown is super confusing.

You should look at flights instead of rails if you're interested in cheaper, faster travel. Unlike the US, air travel in EU can be super affordable. But also look at luggage restrictions before you book.

Booking ahead will be cheapest as the cheaper 1s go first Then use a booking site to find and check rating of hostel and then check the actual website of that hostel and see if the rates are different or if they offer a discount to sign up to a newsletter etc

Best way is to find where you want to stay via booking.com or Hostelworld and then book direct. It's normally slightly cheaper but not always.

Agreed, although Booking.com can be cheaper sometimes if you are level 3
