Fine dining recommendations

Hello!
my boyfriend and I are coming up on our one year in 3 months 🥰🥰 i’m so excited and I want to take us to a fancy restaurant. we’re average income so the nicest dinner we’ve had was cheesecake factory.
i’d like to find somewhere that’s maybe $150 per person? preferably not seafood because he doesn’t like that. a dress code is also a bonus. nothing INSANE but i know him and i both want to pretend that we’re high class for a night
I’m not 100% sure what i’m looking for aside from that other than that! maybe a nice view.
what do you guys think?
GrandRefrigerator263@reddit
I’ve seen a few posts recommending Al Biernat’s and Monarch, and I’ve gotta disagree.
Al Biernat’s felt classy in the early 2000s. My dad used to take us every time we visited Dallas (about once a year) so he could rub shoulders with his Highland Park business associates. These days? It feels like a cruise ship steakhouse. Mostly old guys in shorts and Hey Dudes demolishing comically large swordfish platters.
Monarch has a decent food program, but the food is pretty mid relative to the experience. It’s faux luxury while the view is the real product they’re selling. And to be fair, the view is incredible!! But it doesn’t feel like true fine dining. It feels more like a place you go before prom. And note, we are in the thick of Prom season in Dallas right now. So a lot of the upper middle and lower fine dining around Dallas gets taken over by folks who are out on one of their first fancy dates ever. And while the service industry should respect them because they will become the next clientele. I tend to avoid the flashier spots from March to May every year.
That said, I’ve got three recommendations of varying degree depending on what you’re looking for.
The Knox Henderson staples. Go with Mr. Charles, Georgie, or Le Bilboquet. You can dress up and feel like you’re actually in the right setting. Start the night with some shopping up and down the street or a stroll on the Katie Trail. Then move into cocktails at Knox Bistro (their cocktail program is Michelin recommended and phenomenal) then head to dinner for a genuinely luxurious night out.
My go-to Dallas recommendationDrinks at Balcony Club, then dinner at Mot Hai Ba. Balcony Club isn’t exactly “old Dallas,” but it feels like it should be. It’s a classy jazz club with a fun mix of regulars and visitors. The atmosphere is welcoming and there’s a pretty fun mix of formality while being a truly classy experience. Then move to dinner at Mot Hai Bai. Of all the Dallas Michelin experiences it is the most recognizable as something you expect of a traditional Michelin star fine dining experience. It’s classy and the food is truly magical.
The wildcard date-night pick, Delta Charlie’s. The first time my wife took me there, we were pretty broke. We actually used Groupon back then (which might still be an option). When we first walked in, I genuinely thought she had taken me to the tackiest most white trash place on earth. I was at a little Baptist Bible college back then and he she grew up on a calving operation in the boonies. And I was convinced I had been brought to this place to be murdered. And honestly? It became one of our most nostalgic date nights.
The dinner is mid at best, but after dinner, you take a little Cessna flight over Dallas at night. And that experience is legitimately magical. It’s not a “dress up” kind of night, but if you want something memorable and experiential, it’s hard to beat. I think I would pick it over some of the places that sell luxury as a commodity is because Delta Charlie’s doesn’t pretend to be fine dining. You know you’re getting a Cheesecake Factory level meal with an experience attached. And I would take that over the Prom-ier spots in Dallas.
Final Dallas tip. Dallas has a surprisingly strong tourism/service/hospitality scene. Take advantage of it!! There are some great corporate hotels and some genuinely magical boutique hotels. Sometimes just getting out of your normal environment for a night can turn an average date night into something unforgettable.

These opinions are factually accurate. Co-sign.
street593@reddit
Your criticism of Al Bernait's is just of the crowd. You didn't say anything about the quality of the food.
GrandRefrigerator263@reddit
Culinarily it is mid and the vibe is weird. From the moment you walk in there is weird lighting. The cocktail program is neither classic or trendy. Almost as if it stopped developing when every suburban home had to choose between the rooster kitchen or the Tuscan kitchen in the early 2000s. The cocktail program features overly sweet drinks, and little balance. I have never personally had wine there, so I couldn’t speak to the list of the strength of their sommelier. The food is decent but uninteresting. Theres a fine steak menu and a nice seafood menu. But there is nothing distinctive or fresh. The last time I was there I had an off menu daily special of a Frenched rack of lamb and I think I would have rather spent a little less money for a better product at Toulouse which is literally just down the street. I think as Al Biernat started marketing to a wider more general audience and the HP people started using some of the better steakhouse in the area, Al Biernat remained relevant only because it’s an old Dallas institution. The food the cocktails and the vibe is 20 years behind.
street593@reddit
That makes sense. Personally I just go and get a steak that's 5x better than the chain restaurants like Saltgrass or Texas Roadhouse. It's not unique or reinventing the wheel for sure but it's consistent when I'm too lazy to cook my own wagyu steak.
Belle3901@reddit
I agree the food is great and the crowd isn’t quite as described. But what turned me off was repeatedly seeing a patron bring their dog in with them. I love dogs but the inside of a restaurant isn’t the place.
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
thank you so much!!! this is a really good list.
fruityrootytooty@reddit
I was a longtime Monarch hater and still won’t eat there for an à la carte meal, but the tasting menu is good and costs $125 per person. I recommend it. That leaves this couple $25 each for drinks.
chinky_cutie@reddit
Went to Al Biernat’s because a lot of people I knew raved about it and was pretty disappointing. Definitely won’t be back
Manafont-@reddit
This screams Monarch. The food/drinks are solid enough, but the view is very nice and it’s an experience.
TwoColorsInMyHead_@reddit
Personally I don’t like the food, but the view and vibes are excellent
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
what’s wrong with the food?
Little_Touch_3733@reddit
Yes you can get a window seat for $250 food and bev minimum so after tax and tip, a little over $300. If you don’t drink a lot, I think that’s achievable as the food is higher priced
Temporary-Answer8973@reddit
Another plus one for quarter acre. Went for our anniversary and looking forward to going back again
noble_land_mermaid@reddit
St. Martin's Wine Bistro! Order the champagne brie soup!
Keep-it-simple@reddit
I came to suggest this one. Totally agree.Â
VelociTopher@reddit
This ^
SBTHorn@reddit
You can NOT go wrong with St. Martins. Agree on the brie soup, but I haven't had anything that wasn't exceptional there.
TwoColorsInMyHead_@reddit
I’d spend my money at Mister Charles
JBeezy@reddit
Or the Charles (sister restaurant) a little less expensive. Great bartenders even for mocktails. Fun vibe.
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
just looked at their menu and that all looks SO DELICIOUS! thanks for this recommendation!!
chinky_cutie@reddit
Just went there this past weekend for our first wedding anniversary and it was one of the best restaurants we’ve been to in awhile
zaptorque@reddit
Original Bob's on Lemmon, or Nick and Sam's.
ItchyNScratchy_16@reddit
If you can venture out of Dallas proper, try Chama Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse in Grapevine. Amazing food and service.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
Del Frisco’s is a good steak house with white tablecloths, a dress code, they pamper you. The food’s really good too. Without alcohol, it would be around $150/person. The wine and absinthe is what gets expensive. Their chiffon cakes are really airy.
too-fun-sidekick@reddit
Mamani
fruityrootytooty@reddit
This will easily run over their budget.
too-fun-sidekick@reddit
I had dinner there for two recently and without wine it was less than $150 per person.
TwoColorsInMyHead_@reddit
lol just don’t get the duck
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
thanks for caring about that!
jumpbump@reddit
It won’t be over budget. Look at the menu online.
I’d suggest this place too though. Food and service is good. Park in the underground garage here instead of valet, and get your parking validated as you leave.
Alloutofideas6789@reddit
Going have to put in another vote for St. Martin's Wine Bistro for the food and atmosphere... The Champagne Brie Soup. It's been years since I've been there but I remember it being dark and cozy with live piano music. Went there for Valentine's Day and it definitely fit the holiday. It's on Greenville so there's not much of a view though. I'll have to think a bit on the view.
I saw someone mention Dakota's, which is really cool. It's a downtown high-end steakhouse with a great vibe. Even though it's underground, it's very cool and it looks up at the bustle of the downtown streets with fountains streaming down the walls. Something to think about.
andysb16@reddit
If either of you like pasta, I highly recommend La Stella in downtown or the addison location (steakhouse). It’s absolutely delicious and prices are reasonable.
Max_Powers1331@reddit
Quarter acre
Edauardio@reddit
Georgie is a great pick if you want that elegant, dress-up feel without it being too stiff, and the food is actually really good.
Also check out Catbird at The Thompson, the rooftop vibes and skyline views make it feel like a whole experience.
too-fun-sidekick@reddit
God no on catbird
bemvee@reddit
Lucia. You have to book a month out online, and if you don’t hop on at 9a that day you will miss preferred reservation times.
Best meal I’ve ever had.
too-fun-sidekick@reddit
You can show up and often walk in
cheeseboyhalpert@reddit
This is the one. Only been there once but want to go again. And we are a shit load of food.
mudokipo@reddit
The chefs there are fantastic people too!
Leader_Bud@reddit
This has been a challenge to think about, really. I’m thinking what the next steps after Cheesecake Factory are that you would dress up and go to. In that price range, my thoughts are…
Safe bet chains as a step up from CF:
Cooler local options:
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
what do you think about mister charles?
Leader_Bud@reddit
I think it’s one of those places in Dallas that is really good, but I look at the menu, can’t find anything that I really want to eat, the portions would leave me hungry and just feel like I would walk away with less money and letdown. There are a lot of those places in town. All just my palate and opinion, I just like simple things done well.
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
thanks for your input! do you like monarch? i just looked at it and it seem so so so perfect but a lot of people here are saying the food is really mediocre
Leader_Bud@reddit
It’s a restaurant built for the view, social media clout but the food is such a letdown for the price. Those places come and go in Dallas…their time is probably limited. I’m sure it’s a very talented staff.
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
thought so! thanks for letting me know :( i’m gonna look into your list now. 🥰
Leader_Bud@reddit
Ok! Bowen is my go-to kinda date spot for relaxed, elevated new American. Il Bracco is handmade pasta and breads. Both are truly ridiculous and worth all the monies.
Leader_Bud@reddit
I just saw your tagline “Caesar salad yum”, so the only place you need to go for that is Louie’s…maybe not on this occasion, but maybe! Best Caesar in town, pizza in town, one of the best steaks…a lot of things.
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
oooh i’ll definitely save this! my bf and i love pizza and caesar salad with a side of french fries is my favorite food LOL. maybe for a birthday or something
Leader_Bud@reddit
Louie’s is going to melt your brain I think. If you like Chicago tavern style thin crust.
Beautiful-View-8670@reddit
Eddie Vs Dallas has closed.
Leader_Bud@reddit
Oh that’s true…Truluck’s could be in there somewhere.
ImmediateAside5862@reddit
Been delivering to some fancy spots around town and there's this steakhouse in downtown that always has people dressed up nice - might be perfect for your budget and they definitely have that classy vibe you're looking for
Version_Popular@reddit
Dakota's??
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
do you recommend dakotas? i was looking at it last night and it looked super nice
Corgisarethebest123@reddit
Not gonna mention the name?
fruityrootytooty@reddit
Wait, I want to hear why a fine dining restaurant having a dress code is a bonus? Honestly curious.
evilwizard5000@reddit (OP)
its fun and it’s part of the experience we’re going for. there’s a spectrum of what “fine dining” means to a person and a dress code tells the sub where on the spectrum i’d like to eat. 🥰
funkpanda@reddit
Mot Hai Ba is a great fancy place in Dallas. Vietnamese/French but you need to reserve a couple months in advance for best times
OptimistPrimeBarista@reddit
I’m going against the grain here, but one of my favorite spots my boyfriend has taken me to is Sister off lower Greenville. Unless you’re looking specifically for steak. But we had a wonderful experience and I still talk about it three years later. That and The Charles, owned by the same group, and not the same as Mister Charles (which is also delicious btw).
Jay_LV@reddit
You can do Mamani for \~$150pp and it's the best meal in Dallas.
Bets4Real@reddit
Maybe Steakyard which is nice and good food that’s not going to break the bank.
Little_Touch_3733@reddit
Nick and Sam’s - just have to watch the prices depending on what you get to keep it under $150 pp.
Dakotas is solid and more affordable.
mike_lowrey214@reddit
Quarter Acre on Greenville, Nuri in Uptown, or The Saint in the Design District.
Personally I would skip the pretentiousness and try and get a reservation at Lucia in Bishop Arts.
Version_Popular@reddit
Dakota's??
Feeling-Depth5912@reddit
You should checkout Perry's Steakhouse
w6750@reddit
Town Hearth is king
TwoColorsInMyHead_@reddit
I feel like Town Hearth is all about rushing people out the door. Especially if you’re not a huge spender
Manafont-@reddit
Town Hearth is fantastic, but it’s not really a “fancy anniversary/dress up/view” spot (although the food is better at TH than most of those places).
w6750@reddit
Fair. Maybe Monarch or Nick & Sam’s in that case
CougarCub86@reddit
Bonnelles
Reasonable-Star-9103@reddit
Crown Block, Al Biernats, Monarch, il Braco
This is in Denton and a little hard to get reservations for Osteria il Muro; scratch Italian kitchen, 20ish tables
Reaper930@reddit
Give Delilah Dallas a google, it’s worth your time.
Degenerate1993@reddit
al biernat's
